Way back in March 1959, the world was introduced to the era of Barbie dolls. Mattel,Inc. the American toy-company, made Barbie an essential object in every little girl’s (and some boy’s) play-time. After ruling the toys and accessories genre for more than 50 years, it is back, and this time as a Hologram.

The Hello Barbie Hologram was unveiled at the Toy Industry Association’s Toy Fair at New York. It is a 4-day event which is underway and will end on 21st February, 2017.

The holographic Barbie is designed in accordance to how a child would interact with it. It can answer simple questions (like queries about the weather), keep a calendar, dance and also change its looks! By looks, we mean – clothes, hair as well as her skin color.

It works on voice recognition. It responds to voice commands. The Barbie appears to float in mid-air. The top of the box has a screen that projects an image of Barbie onto a translucent block, which reflects it. The box consists of a 2D projection of a 3D animation of the Barbie. Hence, you cannot see it if you try looking from the side or back of the box. The voice modulation that powers Barbie’s vocal chords is a 256-bit encryption, which transports voice queries to a cloud. Barbie’s responses to the queries are protected by guidelines set by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule, which should prove to be a relief for parents. The Hello Barbie Hologram also gives parents some control over their child’s interaction. For example, parents can set up a bed time, so that the child does not end up chatting with the Barbie all-night long.

It is a friend and an equivalent of “Siri” or “Alexa” for the young minds. While technology has taken the whole world by a storm and now, everything has a technological alternative, it will be interesting to see how the tech-driven toys fare. The Hello Barbie Hologram will be up for sale by the end of this year and will be priced at US$ 300. Christmas might come just a tad bit earlier for some this time!
