Samsung Star Duos 3G dual sim Phone Reviewed with video
Samsung has struck the Indian market hard with a whole new range of dual sim phones. We today got our hands on the Samsung Star Duos Phone, its the company’s latest offering in the series of dual sim phones.
But, why is it so special? Well, it has what most chinese phones lack- a good OS and network options such as 3G and WiFi b/g.
On the outset the phone is nicely built and has a nice 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen. It has Dual Sim and Dual standby, wifi works well and the phone is nice, light and pocketable.
What We Like
- 3.2 Inch Screen (high contrast great screen)
- Nice built quality
- Dual Sim Dual Standby
- 5mp autofocus camera works great and captures excellent video
- 3g on one sim and Edge on other
- Free 2gb Memory Card
- Great bundled earphones
- Expandable Memory
- Excellent Loudspeaker and Headphones
- Sound clarity is also very good
- MRP – 12,300 (You can get it for, much cheaper at the Distributer)
What we were hoping for
- Since Samsung has many capacitive phones for a much cheaper price, they could have included a better capacitive screen in this phone.
- Android could have been a better choice as the OS
- Browser is slow and Laggy and could have been Improved
- Price seems a bit high, but dual sim technology of other companies leaves a lot to be desired which Samsung fulfills.

Total Bakwass Handset ... Total Waste of Money ... How ? 1. Properitory OS - We canot install games or other programs like Nokia or Motorola. 2. Reception - Outside city , Reception is zero. 3. Media - Divx , Xvid, MP4 videos are NOT Supported. 4. Fonts - We cannot install extra fonts. 5. KIES - Does not run on Windows XP. 6. Bckground -> we cannot change background color. 7. Rotation -> only Photo and SMS are rotated. Motorola's Ex128 or any Nokia phones are million times beter than this useless and worthless Samsung Phones.
This phone is 'Jack of all trades, master of none.' When I bought this phone thinking that it has WiFi and other cool features along with the Dual SIM, I didn't even remotely think that this phone will lead to a worse experience. First was the speed of the browser. As soon as you will open the browser of the phone and open even Google, it will take minutes to load (if you say that GPRS speed was bad, then let me tell you that I have Nokia N73 also and with the same settings and with same SIM, I got a faster speed). Same thing happens with various websites. This phone will test your patience if you want to use it for internet. Then comes WiFi. My friends have Sony Xperia X8 and iPhone 3GS and I proudly got Samsung Star Duos. I thought that okay, let's start browsing net through WiFi, and to my disappointment, I was not able to browse. It always gave the error that 'Your ADSL is down...' My friends also used the same WiFi and they also entered the same network code that we had set up for WiFi. However, I was unable to browse internet through WiFi. After fiddling with the WiFi for some time (restarting the phone included) and changing the options like providing DNS Server Name, IP Address and other things, the problem was not solved. It has been more than three days now and I have not opened a single page through WiFi. Making matters worse, if you do some change here and there in the WiFi settings, WiFi icon stops working. I clicked on it multiple times, but it was not opening the WiFi window. The only option you have now is to restart the phone. You phone will show greyed out WiFi icon at the top which means it is on but active and you can do nothing. You will have to restart the phone again to make it work. Then came the Messages section. Message UI is not uniform. For messages which come from your service providers (like banks, network provider and other numbers which show as TA-CL or something like that) will have Delete option as the first option. While normal messages from your friends will have Delete option as the second option. So, if you are deleting the messages, you will have to be careful that you don't hit the reply or forward option when you switch from Network message to Friend's message. Last but not the least, if you are looking forward to play Youtube videos on your mobile, then there is no point in getting this phone. I was able to play the videos for the first two days and that too the videos of mobile youtube and that too low quality. If you switch to HQ option in m.youtube.com, then they will not be played properly. Everything will go for the toss. If this was a little bearable, you will be helpless with the size of the video. Video will be displayed in the centre of the screen with only 25% of the area occupied. So, whatever option you try, you can't view the video in full screen. And if you go to main youtube site, then videos won't play because they are not compatible with phone since flash is not supported to that extent. My friends with X8 and 3GS were able to play youtube videos without any problem and their handsets displayed the videos in full screen. And as I told you that I was able to browse videos for the first two days, after that, I get "DNS Failed" error which has not been resolved till now. Now, it is your discretion after reading this whether to go for this phone or not.. If you want peace of mind and not want to blow your mind to pieces, then stay away from this phone. There are very good phones in this price range, though they are not dual SIM. So, you can wait for sometime before other mobiles are launched which offer better capabilities in Dual SIM. Hope you find this review useful in making your decision to buy SAMSUNG STAR DUOS.
1. What is the OS? 2. Can Google Contacts & Calendar be synchronized with the phone apps ? 3. Does Dual Standby mean that I will receive "Call Waiting" while I am talking on the other sim? (What is the difference between Dual Active & Dual Standby)?
