Top 5 Alternatives To The Micromax Canvas 4

Micromax announced their latest flagship device this week, the Micromax Canvas 4. While they talked about how they received an enormous amount of pre-bookings, we can’t help but feel that most of the pre-bookers would’ve changed their minds after the launch itself.

The Micromax Canvas 4 only boasts of a camera update and a few software tricks over the previous flagship device, the Canvas A116 HD.

Below, we mention 5 devices (in no particular ranking) as alternatives to the Canvas 4, which cost about the same or less than the Micromax.

1. Micromax Canvas A116 HD

micromax canvas 4

We’ll start with one from Micromax’s stable itself. The Canvas HD has the same 5-inch 720p display, the same quad-core MediaTek processor and Dual SIM capability. The only drawback? It has a 8MP rear camera as opposed to the Canvas 4’s 13, and a 2MP front as compared to the Canvas 4’s 5. And the Canvas HD is about Rs. 4500 cheaper than the Micromax Canvas 4.

So if you can live with the lower resolution camera, then you would be better off choosing the Canvas A116.

2. Xolo Q1000

Xolo recently stepped up their device portfolio in India with multiple launches and aggressive marketing. One device that stood out was the Xolo Q1000.

Xolo Q1000 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad core processor. It features a 5-inch IPS display that has a resolution of 720×1280 pixels with a pixel density of 295ppi. The screen is made of scratch resistant Dragon Trail glass. The dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) phone runs on the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

It has 1GB of RAM and PowerVR SGX544 graphics processor. The phone sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and BSI sensor and a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera.

The Xolo Q1000 offers 4GB of internal storage expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The phone features 3G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options. It has a 2,100mAh battery.

The Lava Iris 504Q has a 5 inch 1280 x 720p screen, 1.2 GHz quad core MediaTek MT6589 (same as that on the Canvas 4) processor, a mix of 8 MP and 2 MP cameras, 1 Gig of RAM and a 4 GB storage. Lava has added various software tweaks to appeal to the market like gestures for the image gallery and clicking pictures. It is essentially a Dual-SIM GSM + CDMA smartphone.

You also get a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3G, and 2000 mAh battery.

We were really impressed by this device in our review and feel that it is a really capable alternative to the Canvas 4.

Price : Rs. 13,499

xperia l 12

One from the big brand now. The Xperia L is undoubtedly better than the rest as far as the software aspect is concerned. On the specs front the Sony Xperia L sports a 4.3-inch display with 480×854 pixel resolution and is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core processor. It runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system and packs 1GB RAM along with 8GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 32GB via microSD card.

u can expend it till 32gb externaly

  • dahiya

that is not a healthy way of doing that, but as Mr. rahul ( co-founder of mmx) said that it will happand on an air, means on a n active call. You will dail the # to talk to a forginer and he will listen to you in there local language and you will hear him in either in English or Hindi as per your choice.

  • dahiya

Yes you are absolutely right, i saw the interview, and he said that…and i am sure he will do that.

worth buy it, but before buying it, just wait till 20yh of august, bcoz till the time the phone will be in the markete, and you will have all the pros and cons in front of you, then it will be easy to decide, but yes if u have to decide it right now, can not wait, then offcource this is best phone right now, except ” xolo play” that is also gud, decide out of both.

  • AnkitSingh1

    no xolo play O.o ?

  • sandeep Guha

Seriously, where is Xolo Play in this? With its specs and current reviews it should easily feature in this list.

  • Josap

can u help me on these phones…i am confused, which one to choose
    1. Xolo Play
    2. iBerry Auxus Nuclea N1
    3. Lava Iris 504Q
    or 4. Micromax Canvas HD
in Gaming, Screen, Battery & Camera which is better??

    • sandeep Guha

Josap I’d say go for Xolo Play. I got mine a week back, and I’m happy to tell you that it is nothing short of amazing. If you’re a gamer, and not necessarily a hardcore gamer, I’d say go for it.

  • Vivek_Khadse

You have not included Intex Aqua i5 which has most of the features as that of Canvas 4 except internal memory. It has 4gb internal memory.

  • VikhyathKamath

You missed the GIONEE ELIFE E3. Its  a brilliant phone.

  • parthnagpal

Great list. But I’m surprised that Xolo Play T1000 is not in the list. Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor and a 12-core Nvidia GeForce GPU is going to give a gaming experience that will blow your mind!

    • NaveenGavara

BhanuAgarwal yes it has dual sim slot

  • BhanuAgarwal

iBerry Auxus Nuclea N1 I love the specifications but its a new company no service center in Jaipur Rajasthan , if some problem comes where will i go. So its now worth buying.
Futher the only reason i think buying “4” will be its internal memory being 8 GB, so i can install big games in it.
What do you think guys reply.

    • MukVars

BhanuAgarwal iBerry going to open 400 service centers. Jaipur could be one of them.

  • Jaysh

abhi2013 There are third party apps like Tango which can be used for Video calls. It will make sure that video quality is lowered down according to ur network or wifi speed. I know it cause I am using it.

  • vikasrohit

    Hi All,
Can any body let me know what are the alternatives for S-Pen with these or other devices suggested by other members? I need a device in which I can write notes using something similar to s-pen but don’t want to loose 30k for that. :)

    • vikasrohit

@shivaankrana, Can you please resolve my query?

  • SamirMaric

What about Lemon Aspire A4 its is better then Micromax Canvas 4

  • harishchengaiah

all the mmx fans over here, a good
news for you, the co-founder of micromax Mr.Rahul officially said that: our
company’s main aim in future will be on software and innovation and he gave a
clue to us that, what type of innovation they might bring, he said like, if you
are calling a foreign friend of yours, for example a chinese, you can speak to
him in hindi and he hears it as chinese and when he replies you back in chinese
you hear it in hindi, simply wow and Mr.Rahul even said what he expects on
foreign market and becoming a MNC, he said there were many sooftware based
indian MNC abroad but none in hardware category and we aspire to become one

    • MukVars

harishchengaiah whats the big deal in this. use srini kind of software to covert speech to text.. then convert the text using google translator to which ever language and then again use software to convert text to speech at receiver side

      • MukVars

harishchengaiah moreover, software(i.e. apps) you can download and use anytime while hardware you have limitations. So pay for hardware rather than software.

      • harishchengaiah

MukVars harishchengaiah it’s a technical and complex method you are telling over here these includes many apps to do one work, ask anyone, people prefer an in-built app which can do the work perfectly rather than buying an app and testing it, moreover what i said in my first comment was just a clue given to us by micromax it can have lot more under secrecy, more awesome features and yeah i forgot to mention the co-founder said the translation is done in real-time, not post processing, so you get it, at the time of speech you get the result you want

  • Sumit Srivastava

y not Grand Quattro in the list ?

  • Doc Tirtha

I hope AUXUS brings few more pleasant surprises after launch. It has 4GB internal memory(my biggest worry)……..

    • MukVars

@Doc Tirtha yes 4 GB seems very less as most will taken up by Android OS itself. but still you have an option to upgrade using SD card

  • MayankPatel1

Missed a big player: Xolo Play (T1000).
Nvidia Tegra 3 processor at 1.5GHz Q-core and GPU is clocked at 400+ MHz

  • Pratik Ghosalkar

    g8 i like it

  • Amogh Wagh

hmm acutally no.. the display will be cheap :/ i would still go for canvas 4 even though they didnt make a huge difference but still i would go for the pricing :/ its kinda worth the money -_-

    • NaveenGavara

@Amogh Wagh nuclea n1 is more better than canvas 4
      1ce see d specs

    • MukVars

@Amogh Wagh its good. i prefer paying for hardware as per my need. I don’t want to pay for software. By the way Canvas 4 has Gorilla Glass 2. this is not talked much about. none of its competitor has this. 16 GB memory too

  • Tushi Joy

It is going to be full HD display with lot more interesting specs :)

  • George Wilson

Its screen may not be gud.

    • harishchengaiah

@George Wilson no, even though the display of canvas 4 has the same resolution of canvas HD, the screen contrast ratio is better in canvas 4, which means, deeper black and white levels, which means more natural and crisp colors, in short the display in canvas 4 is better than it was in canvas HD

  • AdilHusain

xolo q800 is also v gud at 10k , and also u forgot xolo play this one costs 16k and comes with nvedia tegra 3 quad core+1 processor and 12 core gpu

  • RohithIyer

you forgot Gionee ELife E5 and Spice Pinnacle FHD

  • KshitizSajwan

    you forgot XOLO PLAY (T 1000) :)

  • SahilGoel

i think you missed wammy passion z..and if u adding dual core devices to the list then also check xolo a1000..

  • Tushi Joy

I am toh desperately waiting for Auxus now :)

  • Kalyan Chalamcharla

    Wammy Passion Z

  • Droidfreak

Stock look sucks. Many peaople like samsung or xperia handsets bcoz of their ui. Although I’m a micromax user I will tell mmx to customize UI. Thats major drawback

    • SapnaMulani

      Droidfreak True that..

    • shishirmukherjee017

M a sumsung users and I hate the touchwiz cuz its too heavy and laggy.
Stock experience is the best experience clean and simple. .

    • harishchengaiah

Droidfreak dude almost all the big mobile companies like samsung, HTC etc are launching google edition (stock android versions) for their flagship devices, do you think they are doing it for nothing, the liking and interest for stock android is in demand these days

  • SapnaMulani

Most of them (almost No one) would be ready to spend more than 15k for “Micromax”.. Their after sales service is damn irritating.. They made me come 6-7 times for the canvas Hd update ..and they did it in just 5min.. one should think about this atleast before going for Micromax.

    • shishirmukherjee017

I think micromax isn’t official certified by google for updates. I maybe wrong but most of the Indian and Chinese companies are not certified.

      • AbhishekBanerjee

shishirmukherjee017 I dont think so it was not just the OTA feature was not integrated in the previous version but 4.2 does have,so lets see when the another update would be rolled out it will prove ur statement.

        • shishirmukherjee017

I have never used mmx devices before so I dont know. My statement was made on the bases of general views. Its good that OTA is available now on mmx devices now, I hope the consumers get the benefit out of their devixe.

        • shishirmukherjee017

          sorry about errors…

        • SapnaMulani

AbhishekBanerjee shishirmukherjee017 True.. It had a major change in camera.. The best part was colour reproduction.. People who didn’t believe the HD in it..this update made them believe ….

  • PrashanthKumar

I think micromax is becoming a bit over ambitious. They should have held on to the below 15k price bracket.

    • AdilHusain

PrashanthKumar yeah ur right…. its a piece of shit at this price, i think almost every one must have cancelled their orders by now

  • Abhi Balani

Canvas HD? It shows warning like “Phone is overheated, please turn off the phone and remove battery” while surfing on Facebook or watching pictures in gallery.

  • Vivek Raje

any service center for Auxus in Maharastra?

  • PranavAmbre

bro!!! u had missed xolo play T1000

    • AshishKamat

PranavAmbre Nvidia gpu has tie ups with major game developers,so some effects are only rendered by nvidia not by others.Specs are super if only Xolo would have increased internal memory and provided better design i would have paid even 18k on that.

  • Prince Breeze

Where’s Spice pinnacle Full HD with turbo chipset launched at 16999?

  • SunnySaini

yeah…they have to low down the price of canvas 4 to 14500 to 15500…
    nothn more than this..

    • wittyabhishek

SunnySaini they will eventually do it … they are using the current hype to sell as many as they CAN  !

      • SapnaMulani

wittyabhishek SunnySaini But this strategy would bounce back at them .. there has to be something different in it to create a HYPE.. “Blow to unlock” is obviously not the reason of hype.. I couldn’t find a single feature justifying such “so called live streaming craze, and dont know what”. Basically they must have thought that their canvas2 and canvas HD blew the market without even doing anything…So canvas4 may blow double the amount by doing all this…”Greediness would land them nowhere” . I feel proud to ALREADY own canvas HD.. A flagship should make its predecessor feel “Nothing like Anything” .. lol.. Micromax should first feel its tag line before doing all this.. :D

        • MukVars

SapnaMulani wittyabhishek SunnySaini Price of Canvas 4 will not come down below 17K.
13000 is for Canvas HD.. over that they have added camera + memory + Gorilla Glass 2. So I seriously doubt it will be below 17000 in next 6 months
