Airtel, Today announced that it will be launching 3G services in Karnataka, while the remaining 13 circles will get the 3G service in March. Vodafone was supposed to launch its service in January, but, currently there is no information available from them. Looks like Airtel will be the first private operator to have properly launch its services in its respective circles.

Announcing this, Sanjay Kapoor, CEO – Bharti airtel Ltd (India & South Asia) said,

“It is indeed the start of a new era when 3G services in India roll out on Airtel’s network. World over ‘Data traffic’ on the back of high speed internet and use of social networking has already exceeded the ‘Voice traffic’. India is ushering in the domain — though later than most of the world — but no doubt we will catch up at a much faster speed.”

Even if they launch the services now, it’ll be years before the service stabilizes. So, best not to jump the 3G bandwagon just yet. Save your money and wait for a couple of years.

Airtel claims to have launched 3G services in Bangalore. But in reality it works only a couple of locations in Bangalore. The connection is intermittent and after the so called “3G launch” , the edge network has gone down. People like me who are dependent on the mobile data services are without data services for almost a week now. If the services are not restored very soon, I am gonna switch to some other operator. Hope number portability teaches them a good lesson.

hmm… when other countries are already testing 4G and 4G phones have arrived in the market,
We are getting 3G now.. wow..
