Google officially launched the next generation of its Android OS, 8.0 Oreo during the first Solar Eclipse in the USA since 1917. Developers have had access to a preview version of Google’s latest mobile operating system since mid-March, with updated versions releasing in May, June, and July. Rumours of the new version being named Oatmeal Cookie were put to rest when Google launched Android 8.0 Oreo through a live stream.
So, what has changed from Android 7.0 Nougat to 8.0 Oreo? Let’s take a lookUser Interface
Users can now organise notifications into custom channels and modify the alerts for the entire channel. This can be specifying the sounds if [...]
2017 has so far been the year of the “bezel-less” smartphone, starting early with the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ then the likes of the iPhone 8 and the Essential phone. These smartphones however, also usually come with a hefty price tag. There are a lot of smartphones that sport a “bezel-less” display and won’t cost you a fortune.LG Q6
The LG Q6 was recently launched in India for a price of Rs 14,990. It sports a 5.5 inch 2160 x 1080 px IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 442ppi and a 78% screen-to-body ratio. The device is powered by a 3,000mAh non-removable battery and runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat with LG’s custom [...]
After a lot of speculation surrounding the official name for the next Android OS, it seems that Google itself may have just spilled the (jelly) beans on the name of Android O, and it’s not Oatmeal Cookie, it’s Oreo.
Google put out a teaser on Google+ to promote the August 21 event where the Android O and its official name will be unveiled. The teaser video for the launch reveal was named ‘GoogleOreo_Teaser_0817_noDroids (1).mp4‘. If that doesn’t confirm the name, we don’t know what will.
But, in an attempt to right the wrong, Google took down the teaser and uploaded it again with the name ‘OctopusTeaser.mp4′, which just [...]
The official name of Google’s latest version of Android OS may be unveiled on 21 August. Android O was announced during Google I/O 2017 and the developer’s preview started rolling out after that. According to a series of tweets by David Ruddock from Android Police, Android O will receive its official name on the day of the Solar Eclipse. Last year, Google officially announced Android 7.0 Nougat on August 22, so based on continuity alone, the August 21 date seems quite likely.
According to one source whose information I cannot verify, Android O will receive a name on the day of the solar eclipse (August 21st).

OnePlus burst onto the scene in 2014 by claiming that its device, the OnePlus One had flagship specifications on a budget price. OnePlus further delivered on the promise with its OnePlus 2, 3 and 3T. After the success of its first four devices, the OnePlus 5 was heavily anticipated.
Despite the controversies and design plagiarism claims, OnePlus 5 was well-received for its premium user experience and snappy performance. OnePlus has finally started rolling out an OxygenOS update that brings in EIS for 4K videos.
The company had removed optical image stabilisation (OIS) from the OnePlus 5 and capped EIS to only 1080P videos. The decision to discontinue OIS in OnePlus 5 [...]
Lenovo is gearing up for the launch of the K8 Note on August 9. The successor to the K6 Note will now run on stock Android as per Lenovo’s announcement. In addition to that, Lenovo will drop their custom skin Vibe Pure UI entirely and all future devices will feature stock Android OS. Lenovo has struggled to hit the ground running with its Vibe Pure UI in the past because of the inhibitions of a custom skin.
Lenovo’s decision to move from Vibe Pure UI to stock Android OS is an attempt to remove bloatware and also push software updates quicker. The removal of bloatware is a welcome news for customers as nobody likes to have the pre-installed applications with no use [...]
Honor, the sub-brand of Huawei has recently launched the Honor 9 in China and is expected to hit other markets like India soon. Amidst that, leaks of the Honor Note 9 has surfaced. The successor to the Honor Note 8 is expected to go on sale in September.
The Honor Note 9 will house a massive 4,600 mAh battery, which is an upgrade, albeit a small one over the Honor Note 8’s 4,500mAh battery. As far as the chipset is concerned, it is expected to run on HiSilicon Kirin 965 along with 6GB of RAM and 64GB onboard storage. The device will sport a 12MP dual-camera setup at the back, just like many other flagships of 2017. Whether it will be a telephoto lens setup like the one [...]
Google’s first Android smartphone – Pixel was launched on 20 October, 2016. Confirming the rumors, Osterloh announced last year that Pixel will pave way for its successors, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL. He said, “There is an annual rhythm in the industry. So, you can count on us to follow it. You can (also) count on a successor this year, even if you don’t hear a date from me now”.
Google is expected to launch the two Pixel successors later this year – Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Though no release dates have been announced yet, the rumors offer a hint at what Google has in store for us.
Recent render leaks from one of the case makers show that the [...]
Motorola has been keeping up appearances in the smartphone world. With the recent launches of Moto Z2 Play, Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus , Motorola has another event lined up. The rumored launch event on 25 July 2017 is reported to unveil the next lineup of Motorola smart phones.
While there have been many rumors about the yet to be launched Moto G5S Plus, a newly leaked case image reveals that the Moto G5S Plus is more likely to sport a dual rear camera setup. According to reports, the camera setup features two 13 MP sensors — one color and one monochromatic. Whereas the earlier model Moto G5 Plus had a single 12 MP rear camera. Reports suggest, the dual camera arrangement will [...]
Oneplus has confirmed that the OnePlus 2 will not officially get the Android Nougat 7.0 update. This will leave a lot of bitter taste in the mouths of OnePlus 2 owners. The device which was supposed to get software updates for at least 24 months only received one incremental update before it was abandoned by the company.
OnePlus has reportedly confirmed that Android Nougat isn’t new, and the company is happy with what they are doing with software, so it won’t be pushing official Nougat update to the OnePlus 2.
“When we built the OnePlus 2 we didn’t have the software infrastructure team in place we do now.” said OnePlus in an interview.
This is becoming a usual [...]
Samsung has ended its Beta program and skipped the Android 7.0 update to directly seed the Android 7.1.1 to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge starting January. Samsung has traditionally been the slowest to roll over to the latest version of Android, and usually the next S series launch makes the update available. However, this time it seems that the company will start pushing the update on Jan 17th in a phased manner. Meaning, not all devices will get the update at the same time.
Android Nougat 7.1.1 was made dev friendly in November and the Google Pixel devices were the first phones to run this build of Android. The new update will bring some new changes to the user [...]
In a post issued on 24th December the the CyanogenMod team announced in a blog post that they will be shutting down the 8 year old custom ROM community that CyanogenMod was known for. The name that made custom ROMs and modding of Android phones safe and mainstream now shuts down as Cyanogen Inc (Cyngn) and Kondik the name behind the CyanogenMod shuts down the infrastructure backing the community.
The post labelled “A Fork in the Road” explains how some recent changes made the whole team expect an outcome similar to this and that in no way will the development of Custom ROMs stop. The debs involved will move on to make ROMs under [...]
