Samsung Announces A New Gear VR with Controller
Samsung has announced a new Gear VR virtual reality headset, and this time it is teamed with a physical controller accessory. The physical controller, Samsung claims, will “provide quicker selection and interaction”.
The VR headset has a 101-degree field of view and it boasts of compatibility with both USB-C and MicroUSB Samsung devices, which would include the Galaxy Note5, S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, S7 and S7 edge and the upcoming S8 phones. Samsung’s primary focus with this release is on the controller, which is explicitly designed for convenient one-hand use. Oculus claims that the controller features a touch-pad which comes in handy for in-app gestures, and comes with a trigger that allows you to “select, grab, take aim and fire”.
Oculus also said that all the existing content the VR will work normally and now, more than 70 titles are being developed, which will be optimized for the new Gear VR. The controller can be kept in a strap attached to the headset, when the VR is not in use. An SDK will be made available to users for the app and for game makers in a few weeks’ time.
The Gear VR experience will surely go up a notch, given the addition of physical controllers to the set. The new Gear VR, which is mobile-centric, does not feature camera tracking. Samsung has not revealed the price or availability of the Gear VR with Controller.
