Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 For Smartwatches Announced
On Monday, Qualcomm Technologies launched the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 for smartwatches. Before this Qualcomm had launched the Snapdragon Wear 2100 in 2016. During the official launch event in San Francisco, Qualcomm revealed that companies like the Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton, and Montblanc are the first customers to use the platform. According to the company, Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 is their next generation smartwatch platform based on a new ultra-low power hierarchical system architecture. This results in better battery life and personalised experiences.
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 features 32-bit quad-core A7 processors, integrated DSP, and an ultra-low power co-processor. The company claims that all these features work in tandem with each other to enable extended battery life. The new model can sustain the battery life from 4 to 12 hours. And when put in traditional watch mode, the battery of the smartwatch can even sustain up to a week-long.
The new co-processor, QCC1110, is a bit on the smaller side. The chipset is responsible for providing better audio, display, and sensor experiences. The co-processor consists of a deep learning engine which paves way for features like keyword detection.
Juxtaposed to premier brands like Apple, this upgrade sounds like a basic step. In fact, both the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 and its predecessor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 have the same main processor. This means that we cannot expect much difference when it comes to the speed of the smartwatch.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform has three variants. The smartwatch is available in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi tethered version, GPS-based tethered version, and 4G LTE connected version. The company has revealed that the chip is in the process of mass production and will be soon ready for shipment. There’s no update about the price as of yet. However, Montblanc has announced that a smartwatch featuring the Snapdragon Wear 3100 should be available in October. The smartphone is expected to be priced at $900.
