    Smartphones in today’s day and age have become accessible to everyone because of their cheap price tag without compromising a lot on features. A few years ago what was only available on a premium smartphone has now made its way into the ‘budget category’. As Xiaomi launched the Redmi Y1 at a starting price of Rs 8999, it entered that segment of the market which is already overflowing with different phones from different companies. Let’s stack up four of the best offerings, Redmi Y1, Moto G5, Lenovo K8 Plus and Micromax Infinity from this price range and see which one comes out on top:

    Xiaomi Redmi Y1

    The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 was launched in India as a part of a new lineup that focuses on selfies. The Redmi Y1 has a 5.5 inch IPS LCD display with a 1280 x 720 px resolution. In a lot of ways, it is an updated variant of the Redmi 4, which is also priced at Rs 8999 with the same chipset and RAM/storage configuration.
    Where the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 supposedly excels is the camera department and specifically, the front camera. On the front of the phone is a 16MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture. Xiaomi claims that the software processing and beautify mode will result “in your best selfie ever.” The rear-mounted 13MP camera with PDAF and LED flash.

    Moto G5

    Lenovo-owned Motorola launched the Moto G5 along with the Moto G5 Plus in India in February 2017. Even though in August, Moto G5s and Moto G5s Plus were launched as an incremental upgrade, the Moto G5 at a price of Rs 10500 is a great option. With stock Android OS, and a more than capable Snapdragon 425 chipset, the Moto G5 fits the bill for a lot of consumers.

    For the Moto G5 as well, the camera has been the highlight. The Moto G5 has a 13MP f/2.0 camera with phase detect autofocus with a 5 MP front camera.

    Micromax Infinity

    A phone made for people who prefer design over everything else, the Micromax Infinity offers a display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The Micromax Infinity has a 5.7 inch IPS LCD display with a 1440 x 720 px display. Similar to the Moto G5, the Micromax Infinity also has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset, 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage which can be expanded via microSD card.

    It has a 16MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera with auto scene detection, bokeh effect, super pixel and panorama.

    Lenovo K8 Plus

    The Lenovo K8 Plus is the only phone in this list that has a dual-camera setup at the back. It has a 5.2 inch IPS LCD display with a 1920 x 1080 px resolution. The Lenovo K8 Plus runs stock Android 7.1 Nougat and Lenovo has promised an update to Android 8.0 Oreo by early 2018.

    The Lenovo K8 Plus sports a vertically placed dual-camera setup at the back. It has a primary 13MP Pure cell sensor mated with a 5MP Samsung BSI sensor dual camera with an f/2.0 aperture and dual LED flash. The smartphone is capable of depth effect shots, bokeh effect shots, and dual ISP images. On the front is an 8MP wide angle lens with an f/2.0 and an LED flash.

    Micromax Ties Up With BSNL To Launch A JioPhone Competitor Feature Phone

    Micromax is readying to launch a 4G feature phone which will compete with the new JioPhone. The feature phone will be called BharatOne and will be launched in the first week of October for a price of Rs 2000. BharatOne will be launched in collaboration with state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam.

    The free voice and data offers will be provoded by BSNL and Micromax will take care of the manufacturing. The BharatOne is said to have a better camera, larger screen and more battery life than any other feature phone available in the market right now, including the JioPhone.

    The date of launch has been intelligently decided to take advantage of the festive season. There is enough proof that Indian consumers like to shop for mobile phones during this season. Recently, Xiaomi announced that it sold over 1 million handsets during the Amazon and Flipkart sales. To believe that people will be eyeing an even more affordable phone during the season is not far fetched.

    Reliance JioPhone took the industry by storm when it received over 6 million pre-orders within two days of being announced. So much so that Reliance had to close the pre-orders only a day and a half after it announced the JioPhone. The first phase of the delivery of pre-orders began on September 25th. The consumers can track their orders via the MyJio app but, as of now, the status shows ‘Created’. The tracking of delivery seems pointless right now but, the status should be clearer in the days to come.

    There were reports of Airtel also launching a Rs 2500 feature phone in collaboration with one of the homegrown smartphone manufacturers like Lava or Karbonn.

    The JioPhone’s popularity has forced other telcos to sit up and take notice of the vast potential in the feature phone market, especially after concentrating on the smartphone market for so long.

    Micromax Launches Canvas Infinity With A Bezel-Less Display For Rs 9,999

    Micromax in an event on 22 August has launched the Canvas Infinity with a bezel-less display for Rs 9,999.

    The Canvas Infinity features an all-metal design with plastic top and bottom ends and a brushed metal finish to accommodate the antennas. The device sports a 5.7-inch 1440 x 720 px IPS LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 2.5 curved glass on top. Interestingly, LG recently launched the Q6, which also sports an 18:9 display and is priced at Rs 14,990. The Canvas Infinity is powered by a 2,900 mAh battery and runs Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box, the company has promised an update to newly launched Android 8.0 Oreo in the coming months. The smartphone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset with a quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, Adreno 308 GPU, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. The internal storage is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card.  The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back below the camera.

    In terms of optics, the smartphone sports a 13MP rear-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, Super Pixel Mode, and an LED flash. The Super Pixel mode allows you to take multiple pictures and stitch them together for finer details in the final image. On the front is a superior 16MP camera with real time bokeh effect and Auto Scene Detection. This feature smartly detects the lighting conditions and changes camera settings before you click a picture. Micromax has taken advantage of the tall display and added “preview on the go” feature which allows you to preview pictures that you click without leaving the camera app, much like what LG does with the camera app.

    Micromax has clearly tipped this phone to ride on its “bezel-less” display and a competitive price. The Micromax Canvas Infinity will be available on Amazon India exclusively for Rs 9,999 with registrations starting today and sales beginning from September 1. The company has also announced that the smartphone will retail offline later on.

    On a pure specification to price ratio the Micromax Dual 5 stands at a winning position and while despite being launched only for the Online market the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro is the most expensive out of the lot. Those looking for modularity and a fantastic battery experience can choose the Moto Z play. While the Micromax Dual 5 also does offer up additional security features, dual cameras and a whopping 128 GB of Storage despite the dedicated microSD slot. Purely on the basis of  features + Price advantage the Dual 5 turns out to be the best for the offline market.

    While primarily designed for the the offline market the Micromax Dual 5 will be sold online as well, and the Moto Z Play is available both online and offline. While considering the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro the OnePlus 3, available for the same price offers a better Android experience and best specifications for the price.

    However, a lot of people may want to buy a Samsung device, simply for the the way images are processed and the good service and support.

    Unboxing the new Micromax Dual 5, Launched in India With Military Grade Security

    Micromax has launched the Dual 5 in India as a part of a new series of phones in the “Dual” brand. The Micromax Dual 5 gets it’s name from the dual camera setup at the back. The phones sports two 13 MP Sony sensors. Of the sensors one is a colour and one a monochrome sensor, you also get F / 1.8 aperture and a Pixel size of 1.12u. The camera setup also has  PDAF and a Corning glass lens surface with a 6 lens type structure and a dedicated color temperature sensor which allows for accurate colour in the images.

     

     

    The dual camera setup has features like a night shot that uses both sensors to get shots without the need of a flash. The front also has a 13 MP sensor and a soft flash which will illuminate your selfies. You also get features like beauty mode and quick capture.

    The Micromax Dual 5 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chipset and has the Adreno 510 GPU. The phone has 4 GB of RAM and a Massive 128 GB storage. The front has a 5.5 AMOLED display with a 1920 x 1080p resolution along with a2.5D curve glass and which is the Corning Gorilla Glass 3.     In a long conversation with Micromax CEO Rahul Sharma, we found out a lot about why the company went silent for a long time. A conversation that was long overdue and why the company needed to rework their backend to comeback to the market.

    Micromax still is one of the largest smartphone vendors in the country, while their premium and flagships did not do so well in 2016, the company sold a large number of entry level smartphones and feature phones. However, once a big advertising giant, Micromax seems to be losing pace to Chinese competition like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo who target the market by bombarding it with budget phones.

    Rahul Sharma, was keen to let us know a few thing about the phone. The fact that the Dual 5 is a Dual camera phone, and with the pictures he showed off from his recent skiing trip the camera setup seems impressive. He also spoke about a new button that sits on the left side of the phone which serves a purpose he said which he will reveal at launch. For Micromax the Dual 5 will be first of a series of “Dual” phones, possibly all with dual cameras.

    The Dual 5 is made out of metal and has a 5.5 inch form factor and a design which is quite identical to the HTC 10 in look and feel. Rahul also mentioned that the phone is “the most secure phone in India” which are bold claims, considering that the market is struggling with whether or not to use phone banking and store vital information on their phones.

    Micromax Plans a Big Comeback – Will Launch Several Phones This Month

    India’s homegrown brand Micromax may not have seen good days in the past few year, but, it appears that the company is planning a comeback to the market. The company which had become popular thanks to their budget alternatives to big brands like Samsung and HTC back at a time where players like Xiaomi and OnePlus were nonexistent, now is challenged by many big smartphone players offering budget smartphones.

    The smartphone market has become extremely aggressive and competitive, forcing big players like Samsung, Sony and Moto to launch products that compete with the budget alternatives of Chinese brands. While for India’s brands, especially those who depend on Chinese OEM manufacturers to manufacture their products, the margins continue to shrink.

    This made it difficult for Micromax to tackle the current market, and while the company was plagued by bad market reputation, and poor after sales service, there were issues within the organizational structure.

    Our sources tell us that Micromax has prepared and is ready to hit the market with mid-rangers phones priced around the Rs. 15,000 price bracket. These phones will offer up not only a few interesting features and specifications but will also include impressive warranties. The first series of smartphones from Micromax should start appearing end of March or early April.

    Micromax’s Online brand YU will also see a revamp and major launches in the coming months. Micromax appears to have re-organized the company’s structure and is planning more products for the mobile accessories market as well.

    Micromax’s twitter handle also recently became active with some news of an upcoming smartphone.

    Recent leaks have shown that the next Micromax smartphone will come with dual cameras, which may make the tweet above more make more sense.

    Lenovo Overtakes Micromax to Become No.2 Smartphone Manufacturer in the Country

    Lenovo has overthrown homegrown Micromax and become the number two smartphone manufacturer in the country just behind Samsung, who don’t seem to be having a good time either. Xiaomi has also climbed up to the fourth spot behind Micromax thanks to their new offline sales models.

    While the Smartphone market in India has grown 25%  many hown-grown brands have suffered market share losses due to lack of innovation and high yield costs. Both Lenovo and Xiaomi have focused on offline this year and the results have shown. Micromax’s market share reduced to 9.8% in September from 14.1% last quarter. Intex market share also came down from 8.4% to 6.4%.. While Xiaomi, Lenovo, Oppo, and Vivo have gained market share with focus on the mid-ranged smartphone segment.

    Samsung has also suffered huge losses not only in market share but also market goodwill dropping for a 26% to a 21% in one quarter. Although all companies have focused strongly on the festive season returns seem to be poor, with a lot of interest going towards launches from Apple, Google, Moto, Lenovo and Xiaomi. Lenovo also recently launched the Z2 plus which offers great specs for Price ratio.

    Micromax has launched the Micromax Canvas Spark 2 Plus, a ultra budget android phone with Android Marshmallow out of the box.

    Specs wise Micromax has thrown in a 5-inch display, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 3G connectivity, 8GB Storage, a 5 MP rear camera and 1 GB RAM. The Canvas Spark 2 Plus comes loaded with Indus which supports 10 regional languages. The phone also has a 2000 mAh battery and a 2 MP front camera .

    Micromax’s flagship Canvas 5 is a marked improvement from its predecessors, bumping up specs where it needed to most. The newest flagship tries to step out of Canvas 4’s shadow which saw some negativity regarding build quality and camera performance. With impressive design, performance, specs and a smooth UI for a budget device, the Canvas 5 is a solid device in the sub-Rs. 15,000 price range and gives a stiff competition to the Moto G (3rd Gen) and the OnePlus X. The Canvas 5, however, still has issues that will be familiar to long time Micromax users.

This year, Micromax has decided to forget about its past Canvas devices for something users will truly appreciate. Many OEMs like Micromax, Motorola and OnePlus want to prove that it is possible for a budget device to look and feel premium. The Canvas 5 seems to have found the right balance of hardware, design and build that is likely to attract consumers.

    Build Quality and Design

    The Canvas 5 has an impressive build and sleek design. The front sports a Gorilla Glass 3 with a 2.5D Curve Touch panel that melts along the edges, which is pleasing to the eyes and also makes the display look bigger than it actually is when switched off. The glass leaves no smudges and keeps the screen clean. All this along with a metal side and rounded edge gives the device a premium look.

    Performance

    The device, with an octa-core 1.3 GHz processor and 3GB RAM, gives one of the smoothest performance that we have seen from any Micromax phone. The hardware allows you to multi-task with greater ease and also improves gaming performance, though the device starts to heat up when the cores start kicking in.

    Swiping through the phone is snappy and fluid and you will love the ease of it all within 5 minutes of usage. The phone will respond quickly to all your basic day-to-day needs and with no app drawer, you can access your apps a lot faster, though . Talking about the apps, the Canvas 5 has a lot of bloatware like SwiftKey, Quikr and Snapdeal, all of which can be uninstalled this time around.

    Games like Marvel’s Contest of Champions and Asphalt 8 work smoothly without and lags. However, playing for long periods at a stretch will heat up the smartphone.

    Benchmark

    The phone scored over 32000 on AnTuTu Benchmark and has been found to be 95% better than devices in the range, while it scores a 4931 on AndEBench Benchmark. We compared the Canvas 5’s results with that of the slightly higher OnePlus X, Yu Yureka and Moto G (3rd Gen) and this is what we found.

    As you can see, the Micromax Canvas 5 scores better than the Yu Yureka and the Moto G (3rd Gen), and also performs better than the OnePlus X in the multicore test.

    Camera and Multimedia

    The Canvas 5 actually has a great camera app with loads of modes and pro features like those found on flagship Samsung Galaxy phones. You also get an app that lets you retouch images and give the desired makeup that it needs.

    The device features a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front with flash. The images taken by the primary camera are fairly decent and is quick at capturing images. The added professional modes like ISO, exposure compensations and white balance help you take that perfect shot. So, for a mid-range device, the Canvas 5 gives you a lot to play around with.

    The primary camera holds well under low light conditions and comes with standard Face Beauty and Smile Shutter features as well as Picture-in-Picture. The display of the device is a 1920x1080p panel with 480ppi which gives bright and vivid colours. So much so that it makes you want to switch on the phone even if you have nothing in particular to do. Outdoor visibility is decent, however, reflections on the screen can make it hard to see at certain angles.

    Phone Network and Battery

    The Canvas 5 joins the list of 4G network-ready Android phones this year along with the Moto G (Gen 3) and the OnePlus X.

    A 2,900mAh battery lets you use the device for a whole day. Heavy usage will let the Canvas 5 serve you till the evening before requiring another round of charging. Charging the Canvas 5 takes a while, and if you happen to use a different cable for charging, you’ll get a notification telling you the charging is slow asking you to use an original charger.

    Some neat features like ‘Smart Awake’ lets you access some apps like music player and camera without having to switch on your device. Simply make a pattern of C on the screen when on standby mode and the camera app will open. Similarly, drawing M will open up the music player. This is a neat way to save some juice.

    The Canvas 5 gives up to 9 hours of talktime (3G) and around 6-7 hours of internet surfing on a single charge.

    Conclusion

    The Canvas 5 has a lot going for it and a lot that needs improvements still. A superb design and build quality along with great display and good performance makes this device worth every penny. Few things that could hold the device back, though, are the bloatware, the occasional heating issues, and most importantly, the poor after-sales service. The Canvas 5 is a pretty solid smartphone in its range and should definitely be an option if you’re in the market for budget devices.

    Micromax has just launched a new 4G-enabled smartphone in India. The Canvas Pulse 4G is the newest budget device from the company and is priced at Rs. 9,999. The device goes on sale on Flipkart starting today. The Canvas Pulse 4G is the company’s third launch following Canvas Mega and Canvas Sega 4G priced at Rs. 7,999 and Rs. 10,999, respectively.

    Commenting on the launch, Mr. Vineet Taneja, CEO, Micromax Informatics Ltd said, “India is currently at the cusp of 4G evolution, and Micromax is fully prepared to lead this march with a range of 4G devices from value to premium segments, which deliver best-in-class performance and design across price points for the diverse Indian consumers.     In terms of specs, the Canvas Pulse 4G sports a 5-inch HD IPS screen and is powered by a 1.3 GHz octal-core processor with MediaTek (MT 6753) chipset, with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal storage expandable up to 32 GB via Micro SD card slot.

    On the camera front the device features a 13MP rear with f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP front with f/2.4 aperture. The phone is fitted with a 2100mAh battery and comes with the usual set of connectivity features that includes 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Micro-USB, and Bluetooth options. The Canvas Pulse 4G runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

    We did a quick unboxing and hands-on of the device. The handset feels light in your hand and the size is just right for one-handed tasks. The back plastic panel is smooth and feels great in your hand, though a lack of a firm grip may dissuade some buyers. The metallic sides and rectangular frame adds to the overall aesthetics of device and gives a premium feel to it, which is not a common sight for a device in the price bracket.

    The 5MP front camera also comes with LED flash as well a Gesture Shot which clicks a picture by simply creating a ‘V’ on the screen with your hand.

    The UI is pretty fluid and snappy as one would expect from a budget device these days. The app tray leaves the main screen clear, though the device does come with a bunch of bloatware, which you can uninstall. The device runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop and there is no word yet on whether it will get a Marshmallow update.

    A 2,100mAh battery isn’t much to brag about here but but basic usage with the device will get you through the day.

    Micromax Takes on Samsung ON Phones Launches Canvas Mega

    Micromax is taking on Samsung’s budget On series by launching its own Canvas Mega series – the Canvas Mega E353 and the Canvas Mega 4G. The first phone in the series – the Canvas Mega E353 comes with a 5.5 inch vivid HD IPS display, powered by a 1.4GHz Octa Core processor, has a 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. On the camera front it has a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP FF front camera, to top it off, the entire device runs on a 2,820mAh battery.

    The second device is called the canvas Mega 4G and comes with a 5.5. inch vivid HD IPS display, powered by the 1.3GHz quad core processor. On the storage front it comes with a 3 GB RAM and a 16GB ROM. It has a 13MP rear camera and 5MP FF front camera and comes with 4G LTE connection compatibility. The 4G handset is powered by a 2,500mAh battery.

    The Canvas Mega E353 will be priced at Rs.7,999 while the Canvas Mega 4G will be priced at Rs.10,999.
