WhatsApp Is Rolling Out Four New Long Awaited Features

WhatsApp has a user count of over 1.5 billion across the world. It is one of the most popular applications on both the Apple App Store and Google’s Play Store; and has millions of active users at any given moment. In India alone, the application has over 400 million users. The company behind the popular chat app is starting to roll out four long awaited new features with its latest builds.

WhatsApp Inc, owned by Facebook, is rolling out the latest build in a staggered manner so most users may not immediately get the feature.

    WhatsApp

    Fingerprint Lock Feature

The features is not exactly a brand new addition to WhatsApp security functions. Earlier this year, iOS devices have already received the update that enabled this particular feature. Now, a whole seven months after, the feature is finally available on Android devices. In February 2019, iPhones had the ability to safeguard their app with biometric security either with FaceID or TouchID. The feature is cuurrently live with WhatsApp beta version for Android that are on the latest version 2.19.3 for those that wish to try it. A live build iteration is expected to arrive soon.

    WhatsApp From Facebook

Previously, we had reported that Facebook the parent company behind WhatsApp and Instagram, wants to integrate the three social media platforms. It means that the company wants the user experience to be almost seamless with transitions in between any of its social networking services.  Users can find the “WhatsApp from Facebook” tag in the apps Settings section.

    Frequently Forwarded

Ill natured users on WhatsApp have been accused on multiple occassions of facilitating the spread of fake and false news in India. Hence, it has been a considerable effort from the company’s part to fix the issue. One of the moves employed to curb the forest fire nature of false information was identifying such texts and labelling them with the “Frequently Forwarded” tag. It would allow indentification of how many times the message has been forwarded by alerting the user.

One of the latest features being introduced is a real quality of life improvement in the user experience. In simpler words, Users can now automatically play voice notes one after another seamlessly. Additionally, the chat app notifies the user with a sound after finishing one audio message before starting another.

WhatsApp, Instagram And Facebook Face Major Outage

The trio of social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have suffered from a massive outage that affected its users. These platforms have a combined user base that easily crosses over a billion. The latest outage marks the third major issue that has yet been faced by Facebook Inc. which owns the other two platforms.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp had started experiencing outages and issues in its service about 12 hours ago. The services are reportedly struggling across the globe, with the problem being severe in the East Coast and in Europe. Many WhatsApp users were either unable to send photos, videos and voice messages or were unable to receive them. However, text messages were unaffected and went through. Hashtags such as Instagram down have already trended on Twitter.

    Instagram

Instagram had issues regarding its stories and its cycle of post refreshes and preview. Users were either unable to open stories of their followers or see recent posts on their feeds. The problem made it seem like a loss of internet connectivity even if that was not the case. It is still unclear as to what seems to be causing these massive outages. The leading explanation points at a change in the server configuration. Facebook had experienced a massive outage in March, while Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp experienced another in the following month.

Facebook has since acknowledged the latest issue plaguing its services. The company has stated that it is currently working to resolve the issues being faced by its large number of users on Instagram and WhatsApp. The services now appear to be almost completely restored for Facebook and WhatsApp, declared via a post shared on Twitter.

Outages on social media platform such as Facebook showcase just how strongly it can impact the daily routine of a person.

  • Indian Government May Launch It Own Chat App Like WhatsApp

Indian Government May Launch It Own Chat App Like WhatsApp

The increased hostility between the US and China have sent the rippling waves of cause and effect to the entire world. Trade tensions between the two highly influential regions have already seen victims. Huawei was one of the most notable to be caught in the crossfire. The Chinese company had been dealt a major blow to its business. To combat a similar fate, the Indian Government is considering the development of an indigenous application for chat and emails.

    Indian Government

The US has shown that it is capable of pressurising or enforcing restrictions which have heavy implications on any organisation or country. Senior Government officials in India were in a state of alert following the US sanctioned bans on Huawei. This was due to companies like Intel, ARM, Google and Qualcomm severing ties with the company after the ban. These large MNCs important due to their technology or services that are utilized by virtually every nation. Furthermore, if for some reason the US places any country on such a blacklist, it can lead to severe complications.

India, to tackle this, is planning to develop its own proprietary chat app similar to WhatsApp with other homegrown secure communications network. The apps would generally be made available for the various Indian Government agencies, to protect the country from possible vulnerabilities. This will be a counter to any rising geopolitical tensions with other nations. The US Commerce Department banning Huawei incited strong discussions within India’s top brass. The discussion encompassed plans for developing a secure platform for exchanging strategically important information.

The southeast Asian country is considering the implementation of this system for Government communications at the very least. This will ensure a degree of autonomy and self-dependence that would not have been achievable otherwise. Indian Government officials have already begun calling for the insulation of communications with reduced reliance on private solutions. The plan details a chat app which will keep and store all important related data within the country and not on some remote servers.

    Indian Government

The US is currently pressuring India to bar Huawei from 5G in India. This arrives after plans for the first wave of 5G trials. Huawei has asked the Indian Government to take an independent stance on this, with no “back door entry” offered. India has yet to give a response to this. The tech giant received a ban from the US on 21s May, barring Huawei’s products and also barring US companies to supply software or hardware components. A company cannot ever be completely self-reliant. It is a regular phenomenon where technology and services are exchanged within the industries. The same as how Huawei suffered from the ban, any nation could also technically be crippled by strategic nations like the US.

According to Government reports, the US Trade Representatives have already red-flagged India’s data privacy bill and intermediary guidelines. Basically, American companies like Facebook are resisting efforts of data localisation within the Indian subcontinent. The ban on Huawei only points at the possibility of any country being banned whenever they desire to do so. The localisation efforts by the Government could prevent such reliance and save the nation from a crippling state in a worst-case scenario with the “Sarkari” app.

  • WhatsApp Tests Feature That Allows Sharing Status To Facebook

WhatsApp Tests Feature That Allows Sharing Status To Facebook

WhatsApp is one of the largest social media platforms in the world. Indians are reportedly the highest users (estimated 200 million) of the chatting app that is owned by Facebook Inc. The company is now testing a new feature, which would allow users to seamlessly share their WhatsApp status on Facebook. The move will bridge the gap between both these massively popular standalone social media applications.

    WhatsApp

WhatsApp’s status is essentially the same feature as ‘stories’ from Snapchat and Instagram. It allows users to share instances from their lives or any other creative messages intended for a broader audience. The new feature would allow such status to be directly portable to Stories on the parent company’s Facebook app. Furthermore, the status can also be shared to Instagram, Gmail and Google Photos.

    WhatsApp

According to the report, WhatsApp will not require the linking of its users’ accounts to their separate Facebook profiles to share stories. The trade, however, is made via the data-sharing API used by Android and iOS platforms. This will allow the content being shared on either platform without a direct link being established on the accounts. The feature is not activated by default and users will have to manually share their status. WhatsApp’s new status sharing feature is claimed not to share any additional user data with the Facebook app.

    WhatsApp

The link between the two social media apps has always been a serious subject. Facebook had initially acquired WhatsApp back in 2014 for a sum of US$ 19.3 billion (approx. Rs. 1,33,600 crores). The parent company has been a target of numerous allegations and scandals regarding user privacy and data tracking. Hence, the implications also affect WhatsApp’s business practices. Additionally, Facebook has already hinted at a single streamlined messaging app that combines the Messenger app, Instagram DMs and Whatsapp.

WhatsApp status was originally introduced back in 2017 and is actively used by an estimated 500 million users. The number is a large chunk of the total user base (1.5 billion) and in 2020 will become the largest platform to generate ad revenue for the company. The new feature is a welcome change that eases the transition between the two apps but the heavy implications do warrant caution. It is currently available for interested users under Whatsapp’s beta program.

  • India Asks WhatsApp To Digitally Fingerprint Every Message For Traceability

India Asks WhatsApp To Digitally Fingerprint Every Message For Traceability

WhatsApp Messenger, owned by the American social media giant Facebook is one of the most popular messaging services in the world. And the largest market for the application in India, with over 200 million active users in the country. Lately, the platform has been plagued with malicious activities, some of which are criminal in nature. To counter that, the Indian government has asked WhatsApp to digitally fingerprint every message sent on the app for easy traceability.

    About the move

    WhatsApp

A report claims that WhatsApp has been asked by the Indian government to make it easy to trace the origins of a message on its platform. This may be achieved by placing a digital fingerprint of the sender on the message. Notably, the messaging app boasts of a secure, end to end encryption on its platform since the year 2016. This according to the company, does not let even its employees view what has been sent or received on its platform. Two government officials have said that it should be able to identify where a message has originated and how many people have interacted with it; that is either have read it or have forwarded it. Interestingly, this is not the first time demand from the Indian government similar to the one mentioned above has been shared with WhatsApp.

While the Indian government has claimed the request to trace the messages on WhatsApp will be limited; it goes against the company’s privacy policies. The company claims it cannot go forward with the demands as it would change the architecture of the product and make it a different application altogether. So, the introduction of a digital fingerprint to track the origins of a message on WhatsApp might be seen as a breach of privacy.

  • Whatsapp To Take Legal Action Against Users Who Send Too Many Messages

Whatsapp To Take Legal Action Against Users Who Send Too Many Messages

Whatsapp is widely regarded as one of the most widely used Instant messaging applications in the world. Launched in the year 2009, the application was later acquired by social media giant, Facebook in the year 2014. As per latest reports, Whatsapp will start taking legal action against users who have a habit of sending way too many messages. This step is being taken to curb the amount of fake news that is being spread via the application.

    WhatsApp Samsung

Previously, the company owned rights to ban users if the terms and condition policy was violated in any manner. However, incidents in the past have indicated that people tend to act instinctively upon receiving news via the application. In a survey, it was discovered that almost 52 percent of respondents received news and stories via WhatsApp. The content shared via the application has supposedly led to murders, extortions and even unwanted uprisings amongst the inhabitants of the country.

The company had previously introduced a “forwarded” tag to messages which had been forwarded multiple times. However, 7 December 2019 onwards, any user who indulges in “bulk or automated WhatsApp messaging” can be sued, the company states. Whatsapp states that the sole motive of the application was to act as a direct link between people and organizations (via the Business app), hence any kind of spam will not be tolerated. This step will enable the organization to assert direct control over its users, even if it concerns data that is solely accessible by the company itself.

The update can be seen on Whatsapp’s page under “unauthorised usage of WhatsApp”, which clearly states that the Facebook-owned instant messaging application is committed to developing its structure around the private nature of data transmission. Especially during elections, a rogue message forwarded by a group of people can spark controversies and biased opinions. This decision by the American company will serve as an effective check on people who tend to forward/send messages in bulk amounts.

WhatsApp To Take Legal Action Against Businesses Abusing Its Platform

WhatsApp Messenger is one of the most popular smartphone applications in the world. It has millions of users all around the globe who rely on the platform to communicate. However, as the number of users goes up, the number of people wanting to exploit WhatsApp against its policies also increases. To counter such people or businesses, the company has announced that it will start taking legal actions against the business’; who are found sending bulk messages using the regular application.

    About the decision

    WhatsApp

As mentioned above, WhatsApp has threatened strict legal action against the entity who has been found abusing its messaging platform. This action is being taken after countless companies were found to use third-party applications and services to spam users of the platform. Notably, WhatsApp also has a separate platform for business owners to advertise and manage their companies called WhatsApp for Business. The entities abusing the platform were found to spam using the regular messaging app, which violates the user policy of the company. The company has announced the new policy will arrive into effect starting December 7.

It was previously reported that WhatsApp was being exploited with the help of clones and third-party tools. These were used to help digital marketers and political leaders in India spam the users of the messaging platform at the time of general elections in the country last month. One quirk about the plan by the Facebook-owned application is that it claims of an end to end encryption in the messages sent on its platforms. With the level of security, not even the company should be able to read the messages sent on WhatsApp Messenger. The company claims it has a plan in place to identify the spammers from outside the platform.

  • WhatsApp Profile Photos Now Can’ Be Saved, New Album Features

WhatsApp Profile Photos Now Can’ Be Saved, New Album Features

The popular instant messaging platform, WhatsApp, is planning on removing the functionality that allowed users from saving someone else’s profile photo. This change was first noticed in the beta version of the application for iOS devices but now seems to be rolling out for Android users too. The latest update also adds new album features; such as providing more information about the files that need to be downloaded. These changes were spotted by a renowned WhatsApp leaker.

    WhatsApp for iOS: What’s New?

    WhatsApp

The latest update from WhatsApp brings about many changes in the beta version on iOS. As mentioned above, the messaging app has stopped allowing to save someone else profile picture. While it is not confirmed wy this feature was provided in the first place, the removal of it seems to be related to privacy concerns. Apart from this, album improvements have also been added to the beta update. With this, whenever a user receives multiple images in a chat, the app will now tell the total size and number of images to be downloaded. All the aforementioned features were spotted in the beta version 2.19.60.26 of WhatsApp for iPhone.

Another change that is reported soon to arrive on WhatsApp is the use of a new media format. The current voice messages and audio filed use a format known as opus. This offers low latency and subpar quality of audio, which will now be replaced with the M4A audio coding format. The new format is reported to offer better quality and support in third-party apps. This feature is only available on iOS as of now. With the latest update, a new pop up prompting users to change their number when they try to delete their account. These features may make their way to the stable update soon.

  • WhatsApp To Prevent Users From Taking Chat Screenshots

WhatsApp To Prevent Users From Taking Chat Screenshots

Popular instant messaging platform, Whatsapp is planning to take things to the next level. After introducing some major security overhauls to its application, the company is testing out a new feature which is similar to Snapchat’s messaging platform in some ways. Previously, the application was reported to receive an update which will curb unnecessary fake news chains. As per recent news, the application is now rumoured to get a feature which will prevent users from capturing screenshot chat screens.

    About The “No-Screenshot” Feature

In another popular media sharing app, Snapchat, users are not necessarily prohibited from taking screenshots. Instead, any screenshots taken on one end are reported on the other end. As per reports, Whatsapp will twist this feature in order to prevent all screenshots within the application. The Facebook owned messaging app is expected to follow on the lines of Netflix and Amazon Prime applications, which do not allow screen recording or screenshotting within the premises of the app.

WhatsAppThis may not be the most welcomed feature for a lot of users who like to capture screenshots of their chats and share them with their friends. What a lot of people don’t realize is the fact that sharing screenshots is a violation of the privacy policy, which prohibits users from sharing personal information with a third party. Even though the fingerprint authentication feature is not yet available on Android, the presence of such a feature combined with the “No-screenshot” feature may be a decent security detail for the application.

Additionally, Whatsapp will be updated with two separate tabs: one for emojis and one for stickers. The sticker section will be further divided into two tabs: party stickers and content stickers. This will make the emoji and sticker search much simpler than before. In light of Facebook’s recent data breaches (which have raised concerns amongst users), the company is trying every possible method to step-up the security detail in its applications. It is possible that the company may introduce a toggle feature to control whether you want other users to screenshot your chats or not.

  • Facebook, Whatsapp, And Instagram Restore Services After Widespread Outage

Facebook, Whatsapp, And Instagram Restore Services After Widespread Outage

On April 14 2019, a multitude of users faced issues while connecting to popular social media website, Facebook. The connection issues were not limited to Facebook, however, because Instagram and Whatsapp users were confronted with similar problems. This is not the first case when Facebook services have been down for a long time. Previously, in the month of March 2019, Instagram and Facebook faced a global outage that lasted for a long period of time (more than 24 hours). This time, the outage lasted for a shorter duration, but questions were still raised regarding Facebook’s vulnerability to external attacks.

Facebook InstagramFacebook’s spokesman stated that the company is acknowledging the issue faced by users and that all steps are being taken to resolve the issue. Apologizing for the inconvenience, the spokesman refused to divulge the cause of the outage. Rumours are floating around, which state that the reason for the outage of Facebook services was most likely a DDoS (Denial of Service) Attack. In a Denial of Service attack, multiple network nodes try to disrupt the server by accessing it at the same time.

    Downdetector Reports

Downdetector.com indicated that at the peak time, over 12,000 users reported issues with Facebook connectivity throughout the world. Regarding other applications, Instagram had an outage count of over 7,000 users, whereas Whatsapp peaked at 3,000 user reports. The live outage map on the website clearly exhibited that the majority of issues arose from the Asian and European continental regions.

Considering the popularity of the social media website, a downtime of even a few minutes is a cause of issue amongst its users, and when this happens on a regular basis, it turns into a matter of concern. A lot of people in the US did not face a similar issue, which hints towards the fact that maybe the Asian and European data centres for the company were attacked or disrupted because of some reason. Users may still face outages in the future, but as of now, the issue has been resolved as per the company.

WhatsApp For Android Finally Gets A Dark Mode

After countless speculations and leaks, popular instant messaging application WhatsApp has started testing out the highly anticipated dark mode for Android. This feature has limited availability and was spotted in the Beta build of the software. Leaked screenshots reveal how the alleged dark mode will look like in WhatsApp.

    WhatsApp Dark Mode

The leaked screenshot of the WhatsApp dark mode feature has been claimed to be of the version 2.19.82 of the software. Even though the feature is live, many Beta users have claimed that the feature is not available on their devices. A few weeks ago, it was reported WhatsApp is redesigning the settings page of the Android app. It has since been insinuated it was done to ensure compatibility with the new feature.

The dark mode feature that has been leaked on WhatsApp for Android is currently only available in the settings menu. There have been reports that the chat window will retain its signature green accent colour for the foreseeable future. It is been speculated that the developers are trying to incorporate a better, darker version of the already existing chat window. The dark mode feature is expected to be rolled out in the following weeks in the stable version of the software.

The dark mode feature has been included by many developers and manufacturers in their software lately. This is because it supposedly helps in saving battery life on OLED displays because the darker areas of the screen require little to no pixels to light up. It also helps in reducing the strain on the user’s eyes in dark environments. However, instead of a solid black colour, the dark mode of WhatsApp on Android is more of greyscale in nature. This will help in reducing the eye strain but might not be of much help in increasing the battery life of the smartphone.

WhatsApp Updated ‘Forwarded’ message feature Will Keep A Check On Fake News

WhatsApp is constantly testing out new features to improve the user experience on the application. The app was reported to be testing out features like Reverse Image Search and in-app web browsing. As per reports, the instant messaging service is testing out a new feature which will allow users to see the number of times a particular message has been forwarded. This will help users to reduce the amount of fake news spreading across the web since the user can figure out if a message is a part of long forwarding chain or an authentically drafted message.

    About The Feature

The new update being tested out will consist of two different features, called “Forwarding Info” and “Frequently Forwarded“. As the name suggests, the “Frequently Forwarded” label will be seen on top of those messages which have been forwarded more than 4 times, ensuring that fake news does not spread like wildfire via the application.

WhatsAppAs per the source, if the message is forwarded more than 4 times in a single chain, the “Forwarding info” label will be removed from the message and will be replaced by the “Frequently Forwarded” label. This means that users will not be able to see the complete chain of forwarding in such a case. Instead, users will have to rely on their instincts to judge whether the message is legitimate or not.

Many Indian businesses like redBus and MakeMyTrip have already become an integral part of the platform. It was previously launched for just Android in the month of January 2018. Now, an iOS version of the same has been launched by the company.

    About WhatsApp Business

As per sources, the first instance of the app was seen on the Mexican App Store. Shortly thereafter, the app was also spotted in France, Brazil and Panama. As mentioned before, the app provides direct connectivity between clients and businesses. WhatsApp business offers companies the option to create a tailored profile which can exhibit information regarding the business, like store hours, website link and a short “info” section that helps the user know more about the company.

Companies can even program some quick replies that will automatically be sent to customers when they message the business via the application. A greeting message can be created for clients to give the impression that the service is actively performing. Moreover, companies will be able to categorize their “WhatsApp customers” and label them as per their agenda. Also, the statistics option lets the business keep a check on how many messages it is receiving and how many sent messages have been read.

Global availability for the application hasn’t been achieved yet, although just like Android, WhatsApp Business will be available worldwide soon enough.

While speaking at a panel in the University, he explained his reasons for selling the hugely-popular Instant messaging app to Mark Zuckerberg for a whopping sum of US$ 19 billion in 2014.

    His Statement

Brian Acton accused Facebook users of giving power and control over to the company. Reportedly, he also involved a former Facebook software engineer in his comments, stating that he still held strong differences with the Social Media company. He also stated that he left the company at the end of 2017 because Facebook was planning to add advertisements to the Instant Messaging Platform, thus integrating a business viewpoint directly with the users of the app.

The 47-year-old Stanford alumni previously tweeted “It is time. #deletefacebook” in March 2018. At Stanford, he further pinpointed that Facebook’s current reach is outrageously high because it owns Instagram and Messenger as well. The total number of users across all these platforms are well over a billion, although the popularity of the social media app itself has reduced drastically in recent months. Facebook and Instagram suffered major outages worldwide on March 13. A lot of users were hinting at a DDoS attack, however, Facebook clarified to its users that the issue was not related to any form of DDoS attack.

Popular social networking website Facebook and its sub-services including WhatsApp and Instagram have been facing a service outage for a few hours in several regions. Hashtags labelled #WhatsAppDown, #InstagramDown and #FacebookDown have been trending on the microblogging website Twitter.

    The Social Media Outage

While the cause of the outage hasn’t been revealed, it was speculated to be a DDoS style attack. The aforementioned attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt normal traffic to a web property where multiple compromised systems, which are often infected with a Trojan computer virus, are used to target a single computer system. However, a post shared on Facebook’s official Twitter account dismissed the claims. The outage mainly affected parts of New England; the US; parts of Latin America; the UK; India; and the Philippines. Some cases of it were also reported in from Canada and Turkey.

Facebook’s advertisement section was also reported to be not functioning, and it prompted an error message when users tried to buy an advertisement set on the platform. It was also suggested that the website is weighing in on the option to return the advertiser’s money because of the issue, but no official statement on the matter has been released yet. With the desktop website of Facebook down, people also reported posts on the Instagram application not loading. The Stories function of the service also was reported to be down, as was the button to post new media.
