Apple and Google Will Now Reject Games With ‘Flappy’ As a Tittle

Ever since the demise of Flappy Birds, App store and Play store are fully loaded with look a-likes of this game. However, it seems that Apple and Google are avoiding this to happen.

After the extinction of Flappy Bird, we can see numerous games playing around the same name. Like Flappy Tappy, Flappy Pig, Flappy Bird and alot more, we even did a video showing top 5 alternatives to Flappy Birds. Ken Carpenter, from studio Mind Juice Media, tweeted that his game Flappy Dragon was rejected by Apple, with the company telling him “we found your app name attempts to leverage a popular app.” Here is what showed up:

22.2: Apps that contain false, fraudulent or misleading representations will be rejected
    22.2
We found that your app, and/or its metadata, contains content that could be misleading to users, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.
We found your app name attempts to leverage a popular app.

It seems that Apple and Google are a little too late trying to get rid of the clones for Flappy Birds. However, Not only Ken but many other game publishers have gone through this issue.

Qualcomm Will Not Make Snapdragon 802(4k TV) Processor

Qualcomm showcased Snapdragon 802, a new chip for televisions at the CES 2014. However, this new chip will not be used in televisions as the company feels the demand of these chips are less then they planned of.

In a blog from Jon Carvill, who is the Sr. Director, Public Relations for Qualcomm it notes:

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has decided not to commercialize the recently announced Snapdragon 802 processor as the overall demand for processors uniquely designed for smart TVs has proven to be smaller than anticipated.

The company also notes this will not affect the production of any other product. However, with the non availability of technology like the Snapdragon 802 chips, it somehow feels that we have restricted ourselves with the technology we move around on daily basis. What do you think ?

  • Ericsson and Samsung Reach Agreement on Patent War

Ericsson and Samsung Reach Agreement on Patent War

Companies getting sued by other companies, this is something we hear almost everyday. Developing new technology these days brings up some or the other lawsuit. We are sure none of us like this dispute among the companies, and it seems Samsung also wants that.

Ericsson and Samsung have reached an agreement on global patent licenses between the two companies. The cross license agreement covers patents relating to GSM, UMTS, and LTE standards for both networks and handsets. This agreement has placed with a huge payment of 650 Million USD, which is also said to be followed by some regular payments.

“We are pleased that we could reach a mutually fair and reasonable agreement with Samsung. We always viewed litigation as a last resort,” said Kasim Alfalahi, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson. “This agreement allows us to continue to focus on bringing new technology to the global market and provides an incentive to other innovators to share their own ideas.”

This agreement ends complaints made by both companies against each other before the International Trade Commission (ITC) as well as the lawsuits before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. This agreement has put end to this patent issue and we hope now these companies will concentrate on innovation as they did earlier. Peace!

  • Samsung and Google Sign Global Patent License Agreement

Samsung and Google Sign Global Patent License Agreement

Samsung Electronics and Google Inc. further extended their partnership with a global patent cross-license agreement covering a broad range of technologies and business areas.

“This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry,” said Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center. “Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.”

This new agreement covers Samsung’s and Google’s existing patents as well as the ones that will be filed over the next 10 years. This agreement allows Samsung and Google to get access to each other’s patents portfolios, which might lead to focus more on product innovations than on filing lawsuits.

“We’re pleased to enter into a cross-license with our partner Samsung,” said Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google. “By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation.”

  • RBI Cautions Users of Virtual Currencies(Bitcoin) against Risks

RBI Cautions Users of Virtual Currencies(Bitcoin) against Risks

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, they are digital coins that can be sent through the internet. The company claims that Bitcoins has number of advantages over the other alternatives. Using Bitcoins money is directly transferred from a person to another, which means no bank is involved in between. This further means lower cost of transfer and Bitcoins can be used in any country, user’s account cannot be frozen, there are no prerequisites or arbitrary limits.

However, authorities of India does not like this concept at all. Several Indian Bitcoin exchanges have suspended operations following a warning from the Reserve Bank of India, which is concerned on digital currencies. The Reserve Bank of India has today cautioned the users, holders and traders of Virtual currencies, including Bitcoins, about the potential financial, operational, legal, customer protection and security related risks that they are exposing themselves to.

RBI says, the creation, trading or usage of VCs including Bitcoins, as a medium for payment are not authorized by any central bank or monetary authority. No regulatory approvals, registration or authorization is stated to have been obtained by the entities concerned for carrying on such activities. As such, they may pose several risks to their users, including the following:

    • VCs being in digital form are stored in digital/electronic media that are called electronic wallets. Therefore, they are prone to losses arising out of hacking, loss of password, compromise of access credentials, malware attack etc. Since they are not created by or traded through any authorised central registry or agency, the loss of the e-wallet could result in the permanent loss of the VCs held in them.

    • Payments by VCs, such as Bitcoins, take place on a peer-to-peer basis without an authorised central agency which regulates such payments. As such, there is no established framework for recourse to customer problems / disputes / charge backs etc.

    • There is no underlying or backing of any asset for VCs. As such, their value seems to be a matter of speculation. Huge volatility in the value of VCs has been noticed in the recent past. Thus, the users are exposed to potential losses on account of such volatility in value.

    • It is reported that VCs, such as Bitcoins, are being traded on exchange platforms set up in various jurisdictions whose legal status is also unclear. Hence, the traders of VCs on such platforms are exposed to legal as well as financial risks.

    • There have been several media reports of the usage of VCs, including Bitcoins, for illicit and illegal activities in several jurisdictions. The absence of information of counter-parties in such peer-to-peer anonymous/ pseudonymous systems could subject the users to unintentional breaches of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) laws.

Bitcoin came into existence in 2009, and the current number of Bitcoin units generated so far is about 12 million. However, India is not the only country to suspend the use of Bitcoins, as Thailand and China did the same. RBI is examining the issues on the usage of the virtual currency under the extant legal and regulatory framework of the country.

Chrome Updates the Web Store Policy Keeping Chrome Extensions Simple

Google has updated its Chrome Web Store policy to keep Chrome fast enough by restricting the extensions on the web browser.

This new policy from Google will start implementing today. With this update, Google is aiming towards extensions that have a single purpose, which is narrow and easy-to-understand. The multi-purpose extensions can crowd the browser UI and slow down the web browsing experience.

    chrome-internet

The blog from Erik Kay (Engineering Director) notes, a simple and speedy browsing experience has been part of the core principle of Chrome since the beginning. It further notes that Chrome will not use any toolbars as more toolbars reduces the capabilities of the browser. Users would have more control over features they add to their browser. • Winter Solstice: First Day Of Winter in the Todays Doodle

Winter Solstice: First Day Of Winter in the Todays Doodle

Google has always been creative with the doodles, we have seen a variety of them on different occasion. For today, Google has released a new Doodle on its homepage to celebrate the First Day of Winter, also known as Winter Solstice.

December 21 is the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This is called the winter solstice, which usually occurs on either December 21 or December 22. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year as the sun reaches its southernmost point in the sky. Further, the sun begins moving northward, making the days longer for those in the northern hemisphere.

Countries like America will only see the daylight for 9 hours 32 minutes. Whereas, in Iceland the sun rises at 10 am and the sun sets at 4:49 pm and in countries like Alaska there is not sunrise.

The animated Doodle, created by German illustrator Christoph Niemann, shows a scarf being knitted into the shape of Google’s logo.
