Nikon : “Must Change The Concept Of Cameras” As Sales Of Compact Cameras Drop

Nikon will broaden its market beyond cameras as it looks to fend off the growing threat of smartphone photography.

Nikon president Makoto Kimura has expressed a desire to develop products specifically designed to counter and capitalize on the rise of smartphone photography.

“Rapid expansion of mobile devices is a change in business environment given to us,” Kimura said in an interview with Bloomberg. “Our task going forward is to find an answer to that change.”

Apparently Nikon is looking for alternative ways to generate growth – they have assembled a new Nikon Imaging team that is working on secret products that will be available in less than 5 years:

“We want to create a product that will change the concept of cameras. It could be a non-camera consumer product.”

Although Nikon has been slow to innovate in some areas, the company was the first manufacturer of note to develop an Android-based camera; the Coolpix S800c disappointed upon release with slow performance and unimpressive image quality. Kimura’s comments suggest that the company has learned from that experience and plans to make a more pronounced effort in the future.

Cameras and compact cameras are increasingly merging. Samsung has announced its own hybrid camera, the Galaxy NX. The camera runs on Android and offers 4G support and interchangeable lenses.

The president Makoto Kimura did not comment on whether Nikon is working on a smart phone.

Nikon D5200 Launched
If the Nikon D600 is a bit much for you , then you might want to look at Nikon D5200 a new entry level DSLR. Replacing the D5100, the new Nikon D5200 comes with several upgrades such as a new 24.1-megapixel sensor, Expeed 3 image processor and a new 39-point AF system.

Nikon launches cheaper Full Frame D600 DSLR with 24-megapixel Sensor (PR)

Nikon has jiust unleashed another Full Frame DSLR into the market the D600, Priced at US $ 2100 (or IN Rs 1,14,000 approx) the camera is relatively cheaper than its 36 MP elder sibling the D800. What’s more its also cheaper than Sony’s full frame SLT A99 launched yesterday.

The new camera has a weather-sealed magnesium alloy build, fast Exspeed III processor, and AF that works down to f/8, its also 15 % lighter than the D800 and slightly smaller in size.

The D600 handles wireless transfers and triggers using the new WU-1b widget accessory, that plugs into the mini USB port, so now you can remotely control your camera. You can even control the camera using a proprietary android app.

Nikon Full Frame D600 may launch in September for half price of D800

Nikons current gen D800 is doing really well, with its full frame 24.7 MP sensor. Apparently Nikon is stuffing the same in the body of the D600 and launching it on 13th of September at photokina. Nikon is said to be kitting out the D600 with a 24.7-megapixel FX format sensor capable of shooting from ISO 100-6400, and a 3.2-inch, 921k-dot LCD display complete with ambient sensor control.

The Nikon D600 is also said to be able to record video in Full HD (1920×1080) at 30p, 25p and 24p as well as standard HD (1280×720) at 60p, 50p, 30p and 25p. The camera weighs 850g including battery and memory cards loaded (760g without). The Nikon D800 weighs approximately 1kg and costs US $ 3000 or about INR 1.75 lac , whereas the D600 is expected to retail for half around US$ 1500 or INR 75,00o.
