This Super Thin LED Based Screen Gives Your Skin a Display

In the near future wearable tech, not watches and glasses, but the tech that you wear right on your skin may become something that we take for granted. However, we might be headed in that direction sooner than expected. University of Tokyo researchers have developed an optoelectronic skin whose polymer LEDs and organic photodetectors are thin enough to directly slap onto your skin. This 3 Micrometer thin display at the moment doesn’t do much more than tell your blood oxygen concentration levels.

This 3 Micrometer thin display at the moment doesn’t do much more than tell your blood oxygen concentration levels. The current prototype is a little rough and requires a lot of refinement, however it the display can be crumpled and stretches without affecting output result and may make for a great first step in finding a true wearable display skin in the near future.

Thin-film electronics intimately laminated onto the skin imperceptibly equip the human body with electronic components for health-monitoring and information technologies. When electronic devices are worn, the mechanical flexibility and/or stretchability of thin-film devices helps to minimize the stress and discomfort associated with wear because of their conformability and softness. For industrial applications, it is important to fabricate wearable devices using processing methods that maximize throughput and minimize cost. We demonstrate ultraflexible and conformable three-color, highly efficient polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) and organic photodetectors (OPDs) to realize optoelectronic skins (oe-skins) that introduce multiple electronic functionalities such as sensing and displays on the surface of human skin. The total thickness of the devices, including the substrate and encapsulation layer, is only 3 ?m, which is one order of magnitude thinner than the epidermal layer of human skin. By integrating green and red PLEDs with OPDs, we fabricate an ultraflexible reflective pulse oximeter. The device unobtrusively measures the oxygen concentration of blood when laminated on a finger. On-skin seven-segment digital displays and color indicators can visualize data directly on the body.

Samsung to Launch Ultra-Wide 144Hz Monitors

Samsung, a leading name from the panel manufacturing industry has revealed its plans to launch two new ultra-wide (3440×1440) displays in the coming months. Both these panels will support a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz and will be one of the first monitors in the world to support Display Port 1.3 tech.

    Samsung wide

The new DisplayPort standard will be able to take monitors beyond 4k and into the realm of ultra high 5K resolutions with just a single cable. Additionally, the new video cable standard could allow 2016 graphics cards to drive HDR-enabled 4K monitors at high-frame rates of 144Hz.

Current generation graphic cards do not support DisplayPort 1.3, but it’s expected to be a standard for high-end cards in the coming months.

Samsung’s new monitors will be available in 30- and 35-inch variants, and use VA panels for their work. According to reports, Samsung, which is known to prefer IPS panels tried their luck with the technology for these ultra-wide high refresh rate monitors but settled for VA due to constraints of the current generation of iPS panel tech.

The smaller 30-inch model is expected to be made available to markets sometime during Q3 of this year, and the 35-inch model is expected to hit stores during Q2. No pricing details have been released but considering the high-end tech used in these panels expect these to be anything but affordable when they finally hit stores later this year.

Samsung’s Latest Monitor Can Wirelessly Charge Your Phone – iGyaan

It happens to the best of us. You are working, you realise your phone’s battery is dying and you connect your phone to the charger located across the monitor or you charge your phone by plugging it to a USB port on your laptop/desktop. Soon your workstation becomes a wired mess. Samsung has found an elegant, if not unique, way to solve this problem – by building a wireless charging station into the monitor.

    vlcsnap-2015-07-27-12h44m33s612

Can’t you just buy a wireless charger, you might ask. You can, but wireless charger is like your ordinary charger, as it will be located away from your desk and will involve a wire anyway. Thanks to smartphones, we are more prone to multi-tasking and as people prefer to keep their smartphones close to their workstation, it probably makes sense to work on a monitor that has a built-in wireless charger. After all, the aim is to reduce the amount of wires in any way possible.

It is to be noted that the wireless charger will only work with smartphones which have built-in wireless charging capability, like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The monitor comes in two sizes – 24 inches and 27 inches – and AMD’s anti-gaming flicker tech with a 178 degree viewing angle.

Samsung has not released any launch date or region for now, but is expected to announce more at IFA 2015 in September.

  • Samsung Might Introduce Foldable Displays By 2016

Samsung Might Introduce Foldable Displays By 2016

Display technologies have witnessed immense evolution over the years. We now can find displays in all shapes and sizes, and they are now an integral parts of our lives. There have also been efforts to create innovative display which has led to the arrival of various curved and manipulable displays in the market. Samsung wants to take it a step ahead and introduce flexible, foldable displays by next year.

The Korean electronics giant had previously initiated a competition where it offered cash prizes ranging between $2,500 and $10,000 to get entrepreneurs excited about creating startups around flexible display technologies. That initiative was called Samsung Create: Flexible Future Business Plan Competition.

BusinessKorea reports that they have insider info on the future of Samsung’s foldable display endeavour. They say that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016. They cite a Samsung Display official for the quote.

Foldable displays isn’t that new a concept. Most of us have come across random design renderings before the launch of every new iPhone. Flexible displays have also found their place in science fiction based films and TV shows. We have also seen some prototypes like the Kyocera Proteus, but there hasn’t yet been a foldable display in real life that matches up to its fictional silver screen counterpart. A fully developed flexible display might look something like this, except for the holograms of course:

The first foldable displays are expected to be featured in smartphones. So we might start to get some interesting revelations by the time the Galaxy S7 gets ready for launch. The technology is still in developmental stage, and it will be a major challenge to bring a new species of displays for the mass market in a year. But we will still be optimistic here and let Samsung work hard on our future flexible smartphones. Don’t disappoint us now Samsung, we finally started liking you again after the Galaxy S6.

  • Micromax Brings Two New 4K TV’s Starting at Rs. 39,000

Micromax Brings Two New 4K TV’s Starting at Rs. 39,000

4K TV or UHD TVs have been around for a while, but their heavy price tag made sure potential customers steered clear from them. But in the recent past, some minor brands such as Vu have brought low-cost UHD TVs in India but their price tag was double than that of an HD TV. Micromax is breaking that price gap with the introduction of two UHD TVs which will challenge the conventional HD TV market.

Micromax is offering a 42-inch variant that will cost Rs 39,990 and a 49-inch version priced at Rs. 49,990. These are some of the lowest figures ever quoted for 4K TVs in India.

These TVs run Android OS that earns them the tag of Smart TVs. The 42-inch variant will run on Android 4.2 whereas the 49-inch variant runs Android 4.4. The TVs come preloaded with apps like Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and other prominent apps and buyers will also have access to Google Play store so they can download their preferred apps.

Both these TVs have a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The TV’s are powered by a dual-core processor along with 1GB of RAM. Micromax will be selling these TVs exclusively on Flipkart from March 13th. With these prices, the company won’t have to convince a lot of folks to part away with their money.

  • Foldable Smartphones Might Be a Reality Soon

Foldable Smartphones Might Be a Reality Soon

Smartphones come in all shapes and sizes. Now researchers are making headway in creating smartphones that are even easier to carry around and flexible enough to fold and keep in your pocket.

We have heard talks of bendable displays for a long while. Japanese phone maker Kyocera had even showcased prototypes of the device with bendable display called Proteus. It could be used as a bar screen, and the could be wrapped around a wrist or a handlebar. Last year even Apple too patented a design for a flexible device. Later last year Nokia joined in and showcased its foldable displays at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2014 conference.

The researchers used Bismuth Ferrite to enhance electrical capabilities of the flexible displays.
The researchers used Bismuth Ferrite to enhance electrical capabilities of the flexible displays.

A team of South Korean researchers have been experimenting with bismuth ferrite to bring flexible display to the world. Bismuth Ferrite has electric properties that can be controlled using a magnet. It is being used to create energy efficient electronics. The researchers mixed the material with a polymer solution and the final result impressed them. They found that the electrical and magnetic properties were enhanced. The properties remained stable even when the display was folded into a cylindrical shape.

One major reason flexible devices are hard to manufacture is that the important electronic components are not flexible themselves. As a workaround, the researchers have been using tiny bits of silicon and similar materials and embedding them in flexible plastic displays.

They still need to figure out bits like battery life, storage and more. The 3.5 mm jack that might also become obsolete with flexible displays. These displays would make wearables obsolete as they can be given added features like health sensor. So imagine a display in a near future smartphone that sits on your wrist, and you can unwrap it and use it as a regular phone. Now that sounds fantastic as well as convenient.

  • Corning is Working on a Tough and Sapphire-Like Scratch Resistant Glass

Corning is Working on a Tough and Sapphire-Like Scratch Resistant Glass

Corning, a name known from producing one of the toughest glasses for mobiles, has fastened its belt to come up with a scratch resistant glass. The Gorilla Glass producer is working on a new project that will combine the toughness of a Gorilla and at the same time add the scratch-resistance property close to sapphire.

The upcoming product dubbed as Project Phire is under development, as announced yesterday by Corning Executive James Clappin. He added that the product will start selling in the market later this year. He further said –

We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire

Corning gets a major part of its revenue from TV displays and fiber-optics. Gorilla Glass, a product of Corning, has gained reputation of the most durable glass in terms of breakage and the company doesn’t want to slip this achievement to sapphire. Meanwhile, Samsung and Apple are the biggest customers of Gorilla Glass and lot many high-end phones like Galaxy Note Edge, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus use Corning glass. So Corning is planning on an ideal glass that has qualities of both.

The company is pushing its boundaries to come up with a perfect product. This new innovation is expected to be received with the same enthusiasm as its previous offerings.
