Boeing 787s to have Android tablets for in-flight entertainment

Whats beter than a mass of Android tablets being put to good use by the big folks at Boeing. The aerospace company has exclusively selected Google’s mobile OS as the might behind its new class of 787 Dreamliners’ in-flight entertainment.

Fitted with 10-17inch Panasonic screens, more than 800 of these aircrafts are currently in production, and the company is exploring alternative ways for users to interact with the devices. The touchscreen input may not be feasible since the screens may be too far for a traveller to constantly tap. Boeing is currently playing with the idea of a gesture controlled tablet device.

BUILD Conference attendees and developers get first access to new operating system.

LOS ANGELES – Sept. 13, 2011 – Today at its developer-focused BUILD conference, Microsoft Corp. showcased a detailed preview of the next major release of Windows, code-named “Windows 8.” The company also detailed new tools for developers to help write applications for more than 1 billion people around the world who use Windows every day.
“We reimagined Windows,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, in his keynote address to the thousands of developers in attendance. “From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise.”

The company also highlighted a variety of new features in Windows 8, including the following:

    Touch-First User Interface
    • Metro style. Windows 8 introduces a new Metro style interface built for touch, which shows information important to you, embodies simplicity and gives you control.
    • Touch-first browsing, not just browsing on a touch device. Providing a fast and fluid touch-browsing experience, Internet Explorer 10 puts sites at the center on new Windows 8 devices.
More Ways to Engage With Powerful, Connected Apps
    • Powered by apps. Metro style apps built for Windows 8 are the focal point of your experience, filling your entire screen so there are no distractions.
    • Apps can work together. Apps communicate with each other in Windows 8. For example, you can easily select and email photos from different places, such as Facebook, Flickr or on your hard drive.
    • The content you create syncs across your devices. Live roams all the content from the cloud services you use most – photos, email, calendar and contacts – keeping them up-to-date on your devices. With Windows SkyDrive, you can access content anywhere with your Microsoft account.
    Enhanced Fundamentals
    • The best of Windows 7, only better. Windows 8 is built on the rock-solid foundation of Windows 7, delivering improvements in performance, security, privacy and system reliability.
    • Preserving power-user favorites and making them better. For those who push the limits of their PC, Windows 8 features an enhanced Task Manager and Windows Explorer and new, flexible options for multimonitor setups.
    New Developer Opportunities
    • Windows Store. The Windows Store will allow developers to sell their apps anywhere Windows is sold worldwide, whether they’re creating new games or familiar productivity tools.
    • Build using more languages. Windows 8 lets you leverage your existing skills and code assets to create great experiences using the programming language you prefer.
    • Rich hardware integration leads to richer experiences – particularly for games. DirectX 11 gaming power underlies Windows 8, allowing the easy creation of full-screen games with smooth, flicker-free action.
    New Generation of Hardware
    • One Windows – many shapes and sizes. Support for ARM-based chipsets, x86 devices, touch and sensors means Windows 8 works beautifully across a spectrum of devices, from 10-inch tablets and laptops to all-in-ones with 27-inch high-definition screens.
    • Always connected. With Windows 8, new ultrathin PCs and tablets turn on instantly, run all day on a single charge and stay connected to the Internet so your PC is ready when you are.
    • Tap the full power of your PC. Windows 8 runs on PCs and is compatible with the devices and programs you use today on Windows 7, without compromise, to deliver the performance you expect of a PC.

Developers will be able to download the Windows Developer Preview via the new Windows Dev Center later this week. Webcasts of sessions will be posted on the BUILD site as well.

Its the classic case of “we want you to buy new devices” Wave 2.0 is said to be considerably heavier than the existing version. As in the case of iOS 4 for iPhone 3G , You basically get half the features of higher end phones, a lot of lag and crashing and a chunk load of disappointment all around. Lets hope that this is not the case with BADA 2.0 as SAMSUNGBADA twitter account has updated saying that all existing bada devices get Bada 2.0, but not all get all the features.

Empower Mobile Information Workers With First Enterprise HLS Webcasting Solution for iPads

LOS ANGELES, CA, Sep 08, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — MediaPlatform, the enterprise video software company, today announced that its WebCaster software is the first to deliver live webcasts on the Apple iPad(R) using HTTP live streaming (HLS). WebCaster enables iPad users to view and interact with live presentations that integrate video streaming from Abode(R) Flash(R) Media Enterprise Server 4.5 and PowerPoint(R) slides. Enterprises adopting this technology benefit from giving their information workers greater mobility and remote participation in events, while leveraging the powerful network efficiencies and universal nature of Flash.

“Getting Flash video on to the iPad is an absolute ‘must have’ for so many of our large enterprise clients,” said Andrew Irving, director of Webcasting at Mediaco, one of Canada’s largest event production companies. “The MediaPlatform iPad solution is an important innovation that fits with our mobile webcasting vision.”

Tablet computing is growing rapidly in corporations. Estimates of iPad adoption by large enterprises range between 65 and 80 percent. On those tablets, video is seen as a boon to mobile information workers and their managers. A recent survey by Interactive Media Strategies revealed that 51 percent of corporate users would “view business video more frequently” if they had access to it on a tablet. By adding iPad support, MediaPlatform is fulfilling its commitment to live webcasting on a full range of tablets. The company has offered webcasting to Android devices since earlier this year.

In Adobe Flash Media Enterprise Server 4.5, which became generally available today, Adobe added support for HLS, a protocol developed to stream live and recorded video using standard HTTP connections. HLS is the only streaming format compatible with the iPad, where Flash is not supported. MediaPlatform has worked closely with Adobe over the past 18 months, developing the only enterprise video tool that enables enterprises to take advantage of multicast fusion on the Flash Platform — and using the beta version of Flash Media Enterprise Server 4.5 to make WebCaster compatible with iPads.

“Enterprises need their employees to be able to access webcasts and other corporate video from whatever device, browser and platform they’re using,” said Greg Pulier, president, MediaPlatform. “Our introduction of interactive, live HLS webcasting to the iPad satisfies this enterprise need while delivering all the technological and network benefits of the Adobe Flash Platform to the corporate IT department.”

MediaPlatform’s WebCaster — available in cloud-based and on-premises versions — enables enterprises and digital media producers to produce, broadly distribute and monitor interactive live and on-demand webcasts that feature streaming video, PowerPoint(R) slides, audio, surveys, polls and screen demoing.

About MediaPlatform, Inc. MediaPlatform, Inc. delivers best-in-class webcasting and media management technology to global enterprises and digital media producers.
