  • Samsung Patents New S Pen With Built-In Camera And Optical Zoom

Samsung Patents New S Pen With Built-In Camera And Optical Zoom

Unarguably, Samsung has been trying to be the leader of innovation in technology especially in the smartphone region. With huge success from devices such as the Galaxy S9, S9+ and the Galaxy Note 9,  Samsung is now adding bluetooth functionality to its signature S Pen. This has more implications than we can think of.

    Note 9

    Expected Features

Enabling bluetooth in the Stylus previously enabled users to use it as a selfie remote, a feature that was usually availed by purchasing add-ons. This was perfect to take selfies and group pictures from a distance. It now appears that the Samsung is taking this a step further. With the inclusion of a built-in camera, taking pictures will become a whole lot easier. Samsung has now been officially granted a patent for the same by the US Patent And Trademark Office.

    About The Patent

The patent was first filed in February 2017. The patent included an “electric pen device”, with “an optical system that had a lens & an image sensor”. This allowed the camera to be controlled from an external device. This means that the bluetooth functionality will be obviously retained in the new S Pen.

You can clearly see in the patent image that the optical camera lens is set in the upper chamber of the new S Pen. It also has a control key that will control the zoom-in & zoom-out feature. Its been some time since the patent was filed, so we can expect it to be implemented in the next big Samsung device. Not anytime soon though, because the optical zoom would make the new S Pen thicker than its predecessors. Guess we’ll just have to wait for Samsung to make their move then.

  • Samsung Smart Clothing With Health Diagnosing Features

Samsung Smart Clothing With Health Diagnosing Features

Samsung is a huge company. It also is one of the market leaders in innovation. There have been many industry firsts by Samsung which is what we have for you today. Samsung in 2017 applied for a patent at the World Intellectual Property Office or WIPO for short; for an ‘Electronic apparatus and method of controlling the same’. And it was of Samsung Smart Shirts with Health Diagnosing Features.

The patent was approved on January 24, 2019. The patent shows a Samsung Smart Shirt with sensors. These sensors help in diagnosing a person’s physical condition.

What this means is, that the shirt will also be able to scan the person’s lungs for any respiratory problems. The patents show sensors inside the shirt which can measure the breathing patterns of the users. The shirt will also be connected to a smartphone. The Smartphone will receive diagnostics and advices based on your condition.

This is not the first time Samsung has used or showcased smart wearable technology. In 2018 winter Olympics, Samsung showed off the Smartsuit. It was a wearable which skaters could wear to practice and train. The application for smart wearable is increasing every year; as more and more respiratory problems come to light.

    Application of Such Technologies

The images were uploaded by Samsung on WIPO’s official site. These Images show the tech in action.  Also, each side of the lung has 3 sensors which take the reading. Any irregularity in the breathing pattern or sounds from the lungs is notified. It seems like that Samsung is serious about user’s health. Most noteworthy use for this may be in training and sports.

There is also a patent for infants and kids which could be useful. One possible way to do it is to make the fabric comfortable to wear. The sensors also will have to be big enough to fit. It is not known if Samsung will release the product. Maybe they will only bring it out for the athletes. Or maybe they would bring a consumer version of it.

Finally, It seems like an interesting technology by Samsung. But it is yet to be seen if this makes it to the shelves.

  • Apple Will Launch Over-Ear Style Headphones In The Second Half Of 2019

Apple Will Launch Over-Ear Style Headphones In The Second Half Of 2019

Apple launched the iPod in the year 2001 which revolutionized the music industry.  Apple also introduced the earbuds which were a key driver for the success of the portable music player. Over the years, the company has launched several versions of the earbuds which were succeeded by EarPods in the year 2012. In late 2016, Apple unveiled the AirPods which have become the de-facto standard for wireless earphones.

Except for its own range of audio accessories, Apple also owns the Beats by Dre audio accessory brand which it acquired in the year 2014. After acquiring Beats, Apple added a few products to the brand but that has slowed down after 2015. Last year, Ming-Chi Kuo, a reputed Apple analyst claimed in that Apple will launch a pair of over-ear style headphones which unfortunately did not happen. A fresh report published by Bloomberg suggests that the headphones are likely to launch soon.

    Expectations & Launch Date

Except for the rumour that Apple is readying a pair of wireless headphones, any detail about its features and specifications is unavailable. The Bloomberg report mainly talks about Sonos launching a new lineup of high-end headphones. But it also states that Apple will launch a pair of Over-ear headphones in the second half of 2019. Following are the expected features of high-end headphones from Apple

    • Siri Integration- Like the Apple AirPods, the anticipated headphones are expected to have Siri integration which will allow users to wirelessly control features on their iPhone.
    • W1 Chip- The Apple W1 is a SoC from Apple which is used in the AirPods and several Beats headphones. It is used for a streamlined and seamless wireless connection between Apple products. Therefore the high-end over-ear headphones are assumed to feature this chipset.
    • Wireless Charging- Reports in the past have claimed that Apple is developing AirPods with wireless charging support and a similar feature is also expected from the over-ear Apple headphones.

  • Xiaomi Launches Retro- Styled Elvis Radio

Xiaomi Launches Retro- Styled Elvis Radio

A retro styled  LP player was launched by Xiaomi last august which was very well received. The speaker is a smart radio and it comes with a retro design which looks like old radios from the 1960s. The LP Player comes in a moon rock white color. The player is coated in three layers just like car paints. It also has a chrome-plated dual-purpose metal handle as well. It can be folded over the bottom for use as a stand for the player as well. The Xiaomi player is fitted with a 52mm large-diameter NdFeB full-range speaker which supposedly provides great sound.

Very little is known about the new version but the old speaker was very well received by the community. It featured a built-in 400mAh battery, which is capable of providing up to 7 hours of battery life when used normally. The speaker had rounded corners, a round switch and even an imitation plate with a needle in which the radio speaker is hidden. The height of the earlier version of speakers was just 6.3cm and it could fit in your palm easily. It was built from a full-metal case and weighed just 130g.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkIs7752Igc

The older speaker also supported Bluetooth fast connection, which could realize wireless control of mainstream music apps including Apple Music, QQ Music and Netease Cloud Music. The new speaker however has 12 preset channels that are freely customisable.

  • Apple Might Be Developing 7th Gen iPod Touch Claim Apple Suppliers

Apple Might Be Developing 7th Gen iPod Touch Claim Apple Suppliers

Apple first launched the iPod Touch in the year 2007 along with the first-gen iPhone. Essentially, the iPod Touch is an iPhone without phone call capabilities and a low-resolution camera. The company has periodically updated the iPod Touch with the latest models of the iPhones. The current 6th generation device was launched in the year 2016 alongside the iPhone 6.

Rumours in the past claimed that Apple will phase out the iPod Touch but a latest report suggests otherwise. Several suppliers at CES 2019 reportedly told a Japanese site, Mac Otakara that a 7th Generation iPod Touch might be in development. It is possible that the suppliers were restrained to reveal confidential information of the unlaunched product. In the year 2017, Apple officially killed the two other available iPods, the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle. Therefore, to keep the rich heritage of the revolutionary iPod alive, Apple might launch a 7th-Generation iPod Touch.

    iPod 7th-Gen Expectations

Even though Apple suppliers did not provide any information about the specs and features of the 7th-Generation iPod Touch, consumers would surely appreciate the following features on a future device

    Larger Display & Battery

The current iPod Touch sports a 4-inch retina display and a 1043 mAh battery. The battery capacity on the current iPod surely seems small but the highly-optimised iOS allows the device to provide decent battery backup. A larger 5.8 inch display like the iPhone X and XS would surely be appreciated. In terms of battery, anything upwards of the current 1043 mAh battery capacity would be a nice addition.

    Faster Chipset

The iPod Touch 6th Generation packs the Apple A8 chipset and since 2016 Apple has launched several iPhones with faster SoC’s. Therefore the iPod Touch 7th gen can have the faster A10 or A12 chipset.

    Notch Display & FaceID

notchFirst seen on the iPhone X, the notch display created a lot of buzz in the industry. However, it has become a common sighting even on Android smartphones. With the iPhone X, Apple did away with a fingerprint sensor and introduced the revolutionary FaceID which again has become very popular. Hence, iPod Touch 7th-generation can adopt both these features from its elder siblings.

    USB Type-C Connector

The current iPod has the lightning connector at the bottom for charging and data transfer. While Apple launched the iPad Pro with a USB Type-C port and reports claim future iPhones will have this type of connector. It is highly likely that the expected iPod Touch 7G also gets this type of port.

Whether these features make it to the final device or not is yet unknown. However, the device will surely attract attention.

  • Xiaomi Launches Mi Home Projector Lite

Xiaomi Launches Mi Home Projector Lite

Xiaomi has a vast array of products from home electronics, smart home, kitchen appliances, smartphones, televisions, computer appliances – almost everything imaginable. Xiaomi also has had launched projectors in the past, one of which had also won Japan’s 2017 Good Design Award! Now, the company has launched a small portable projector called the Mi Home Projector Lite that can be a perfect fit if you are a movie buff or like to consume your entertainment larger than life. This will be the company’s second projector after the Mi Laser Projector 150 which was released in early 2017.

    Specifications

The projector is a compact long-throw projector which is perfect for smaller houses with relatively smaller rooms. However, the small size does not mean that it is less powerful. The projector can project 1080p images between 40 and 200 inches in size with a native aspect ratio of 1.2:1. It also features 500 ANSI LED lamp that has a life of 30,000 hours. The projector supports HDR10 which is great for viewing quality videos.

The projector also features a built-in speaker, along with Dolby Atmos and DTS support which are all handy features to have. But the most impressive feature is it’s built-in Mi TV functionality along with voice control. The projector supports different kinds of wired input connections and has HDMI, USB and aux inputs. It is quite understandable from the name of the product that Xiaomi is aiming to sell these projectors for homes and not necessarily for workplaces.

The projector however will be only available only in White colour and will be sold in China for the moment. It will be amazing to see this sold in India, but there is no news of that yet. The projector is currently up for crowdfunding and will be available for CNY2199 ($320) which will later increase to CNY2499 ($364).

  • DJI Announces A $650 Smart Controller At CES

DJI Announces A $650 Smart Controller At CES

DJI has been making new and innovative products in the drone and videography business for a long time now. This year, at CES they showcased a smart controller with a screen that can see what your drone sees, in realtime!

    Features

The controller supports its Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro drones and it features a screen with which you can see the visuals captured by the drone in realtime. The said screen is a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen that runs Android. DJI knows the problems that drone pilots face and thus, has included features to prevent those issues. It has protection from harsh temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius which allows the pilot to fly drones in extreme temperatures. The smart controller also has a bright 1,000 cd/m2 screen thus allowing for a clear viewing experience even in harsh and direct sunlight.

It has Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, and DJI’s own OcuSync 2.0 video transmission technology. This technology for video transmission automatically switches between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz to reduce interference. This allows the pilot assurance of a reliable long-range transmission. The Android loaded on the controller is a customised version with apps for sharing and editing. This includes DJI’s own Go Share app as well.

Additionally, it has a microphone and a speaker if anyone wishes to livestream the drone flight as well! If you want to playback your video directly on a bigger screen in 4K you can do that using the HDMI port on the controller. The in- built storage on it however, is just 16GB. The controller does however support a maximum of 128GB UHS-1 Speed Grade 3 card. Even at lower temperatures, the 5,000mAh battery with support for fast charging ensures that the controller lasts long enough for a flight. It can be fully charged in just 2 hours using a 12V/2A adapter and it lasts up to 2.5 hours on a single full charge.

The controller is priced at a hefty $650 and is available on the company’s website.

  • Sony Has Reportedly Shipped Over 90 Million PlayStation 4 Units

Sony Has Reportedly Shipped Over 90 Million PlayStation 4 Units

PlayStation has not been known to release sales figures. But occasionally we do get to know details of PlayStation sales. This time around, the source is The Hunter, who serves as a senior gaming, tech and media editor for Walmart Canada. According to his statement in a popular micro-blogging website, PlayStation 4 crossed 90 Million units in sales.

This is no easy feat since Sony had confirmed in late October, that the company has shipped over 86 million shipments worldwide. Given the holiday season where everyone gave gifts has just passed, another 4 or 5 million in sales is not surprising. However, what is disconcerting is that Sony is said to be not participating in E3 this year. The PlayStation 5 has ben long anticipated. Specially since it has been almost 5 years since the playStation 4’s launch.

    Sony’s Statement

In a statement by Sony, they said that PlayStation fans mean the world to them and they always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, they have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. They have also said that they are exploring new and familiar ways to engage their community in 2019 and can’t wait to share their plans with the gamers. This has led to speculations suggesting that Sony might be planning their own event where they release a new PlayStation console. This kind of a stunt has previously been seen with big players like Microsoft and EA.

Another reason for Sony’s no-show is also believed to be the lack of game titles that are to be released in 2019 for the PS4 console. The very few games that are yet to be released include The Last of Us: Part 2, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima. It will be exciting if Sony does release a new console in 2019 itself and not 2020. However, some speculations now suggest a 2020 release, but we will just have to wait and see what happens.

  • Apple Misses AirPower Release Window

    Apple Misses AirPower Release Window

Apple is known for their timely product releases and the exceptional quality of the products. But it seems like Apple has been having some issues with the AirPower – A wireless charger that will reportedly charge multiple devices. In all the Apple events in 2017, the company had said that consumers can expect the AirPower to be released for purchase by 2018 itself.

AirPower is a wireless charging mat-like device that can charge more than one device. Most wireless chargers available in the market now are capable of charging one device at a time. The Apple wireless charger was shown to charge an Apple Watch, an iPhone and their proprietary wireless earbuds.

    What Happened?

The AirPower device was also supposed to coordinate with all the Apple devices being charged and show percentages of charge in each device on the iPhone. The company had expressed interest to work with Qi Standards team. Th aim is to incorporate these benefits into the future of the standards. But no news about any cooperation has come up yet either.

Apple has also not set a price down for the AirPower charger and have not given out a statement regarding the same. It is believed that some internal development difficulties has caused this delay. It is very unlike of Apple to miss deadlines as they hold to higher standards and have set timelines for every device they make. However, it is unclear if the AirPower project has altogether been scrapped. Apple might also be making further improvements to the product itself but our guess is as good as yours.

    When Will We Know?

Apple usually has three or four events in a year. One in March which revolves around education and creativity themes and are often known to include iPads. There is also a big event in June known as WWDC which sees mostly softwares and sometimes, although rarely, high-end hardware.

The other two events are in September which is the most anticipated event in all year. The reason behind it is because this event usually features new iPhones and Apple Watches and one in October. The October event usually releases iPads and sometimes consumer focused Macs. We will hopefully come to know the status of the AirPower in the next Apple event in 2019, if not before.

  • Samsung Is Developing A Rollable TV

Samsung Is Developing A Rollable TV

Samsung is not only the worlds number one smartphone manufacture, it is also a leader in display technologies. A patent granted to the company reveals they are working on a TV with a rollable display.

    Rollable TV Patent
    • Space Saving- This is one apparent benefit of owning a television with a rollable dipslay. Such a TV can be rolled into its casing which will free up the space surrounding the TV set. In addition, transporting a compact rollable TV would be much easier in comparison to a conventional flat screen TV. This will reduce logistics and costs to allow the TV to become cheaper.
    • Tough – Due to its flexible nature, the display panel wont break easily unlike glass panels on currently available Televisions. The currently available TVs are prone to breaking if hit by a sharp object. Whereas the flexible panel would be harder to break and the shell protecting the display can further increase its life. Such a device would be a perfect fit of homes with toddlers and growing up teens.
    • Variable Aspect Ratio- Future TVs with rollable display can have variable aspect ratio as the outer shell can be opened to a particular width to alter its aspect ratio.
    Samsung’s Rollable TV Patent

Samsung Electronics filed a patent with USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for a TV with a rollable display which has been granted. The patent reveals a wide screen television that can fold in to a close packed form factor. The stand of the TV with rollable display acts as the base when it is in the closed state. The rollable display and the rolling mechanism is concealed behind the side protection covers of the device.

The flexible LED panel rolls out on either sides to transform into a full screen television. The mechnaism of the TV from Samsung’s patent is quite similar to that of a roller blind. The top and bottom sides of the  flexible LED panel has grooves that interlock when in closed state. Another patent illustration reveals that the base of the stand has a rack and pinion cogged mechanism which will likely be controlled with the help of motors.

Lg Already showcased a vertically rollable POLED based TV which has a different design from this patent. ( See Top Image.)

    Launch Date
