LG Patents A Smartphone With Punch Hole Front Camera

A glimpse of LG’s upcoming smartphone was seen through a patent granted by the Turkish Patent Institute. The device in question is reported to sport a punch-hole front-facing camera. This would mark the first time LG is planning to use this form of bezel reduction method for an all screen device.

    LG

According to the schematics, the smartphone will sport a punch-hole camera in the top left corner of the screen. The front panel is devoid of any seems apart from bezels on the top alongside an earpiece with necessary sensors and a buttonless bottom. The back, however, is a familiar design that has already been seen before. LG V40 ThinQ is clearly used as an inspiration for the rear layout, as the schematics show a striking resemblance.

The triple camera module at the back is in an identical pattern to the LG V40 ThinQ with a horizontal placement side by side. A flash flanks the right of the camera set up while the fingerprint sensor is placed right below it. This proves that the new device will not feature an in-display fingerprint scanner at the front. Changes to LG’s formula has been historically slow with the rate of adoption being behind other OEMs at this moment.

    LG

Unfortunately, no information about specifications as such is available regarding the upcoming device, or rather even if it is planned on being mass produced. With this only assumptions can be made regarding its specifications and hardware. If the device is similar to LG V40 ThinQ then it might see the same sort of top-notch hardware treatment if it launches the coming months.

  • MIT Develops Algorithm To Help Robots Predict Human Movements

MIT Develops Algorithm To Help Robots Predict Human Movements

Robots and humans are capable of functioning in close proximity to each other. For instance, in factories, robots assemble the moving parts of a machine, while the human workforce is responsible for transporting different parts between workstations. However, some hindrances might lead to unexpected slowdowns, consequently reducing the efficiency of the whole system. Hence, researchers at MIT have designed an algorithm that can predict where humans will go next.

In the year 2018, MIT researchers and BMW automobiles were testing ways where humans and robots could collaborate to speed up car assemblies. In such an instance, robots were programmed to pause momentarily whenever a human passes close by. However, it was noted that the robots would literally freeze and held their state for a long time instead of resuming their functions. Such unnecessary pauses would translate to a huge loss in efficiency. The researchers at MIT came up with a solution for the same.

    Humans And Robots

The team discovered that the major problem lies in the robot’s trajectory alignment algorithms. The pre-fed algorithms could accurately predict a human’s future movements, but the major limitation resided in its ability to predict how long would a person take to move to any point in the predicted path. A new algorithm was developed by the MIT research team which anticipates the timing of a person’s motion in addition to guessing his/her movements.  When the algorithm was applied, it was derived that the robot became much more responsive than before. Instead of freezing in place when someone walked by, the robot simply rolled out of the way and resumed later.

Julie Shah, a member of the team stated that the algorithm mimics human motion to such an extent that the robot can understand and monitor pauses in natural movement. The results of the latest studies and research will be presented at the Robotics: Science and Systems conference in Germany.

HD Renders Of LG Stylo 5 Revealed Via Case Maker

Due to shrinking profit margins and fierce competition from Chinese smartphone makers, Korea based LG reduced it concentration of resources from the smartphone business. However, fresh renders renders of an unreleased LG handset suggest that the company is still trying to break into the heavily crowded industry which is rapidly booming. The said device is the LG Stylo 5 which will succeed the Stylo 4 from yesteryear. The HD renders of the device have been leaked on Twitter which were sourced from a case maker.

    LG Stylo 5 Design

The LG Stylo 5 has an attractive design with a large display on the front which has considerable bezels on top and bottom. However, in comparison to other contemporary smartphones, its design looks a bit dated which is due to absence of a notch and the aforementioned bezels. The top bezel of the device houses the earpiece, front facing camera and a dual led flash whereas as the bottom bezel is free from any controls or markings.

Moving over to the bezels, the LG Stylo 5 has a right side mounted power button and left side mounted volume rockers. The rear of the smartphone has a single rear camera setup and a fingerprint sensor for biometric recognition. The bottom of the device is occupied by a USB Type C port, 3.5 mm audio jack, speaker grille and a pen stylus. Yes, the name Stylo 5 comes from the stylus which is staple to the lineup. Details about the specifications of the smartphone are yet to be revealed. • LG To Launch An Online Only Budget Smartphone Series In India Soon

LG To Launch An Online Only Budget Smartphone Series In India Soon

In the last few years, the dominance of Chinese smartphone OEMs has increased substantially in the Indian market. Makers like Xiaomi, Realme and Honor have seen exponential growth in sales while established brands like Samsung and LG had lost their grip on the same, at least on the budget side of things. The former tried to redefine itself by launching the online-only Galaxy M series back in the month of January. By providing competitive specifications at a lucrative price tag, the lineup has seen a good reception and has put Samsung back on the radar. Now, the latest reports claim that another Korean giant, LG is looking to do the same; by launching an online exclusive, budget smartphone lineup in India soon.

    About the series

    LG

As mentioned above, LG is planning to introduce a new series of smartphones in the Indian market. This may be a budget lineup which will only be available to purchase online. Along with the information, images alleged to be of a device in the series have also been shared in the report. These images reveal a handset with a glass finish and gradient colour scheme on the back. The right side of the smartphone has the volume rockers and the power button. Over at the back, a vertically placed triple camera setup along with an LED flash is visible. The rear panel also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner with the LG branding present.

It is also known that the device will make use of AI in certain areas around the handset; presumably in the UI (User Interface) and the camera application. The reports further claim the series will borrow many features from LG’s flagship series, such as the G and V lineup of smartphones. Unfortunately, more details about the handsets are unknown at the moment. But it is expected that the company may make an announcement regarding them soon.

  • LG Patents A Smartphone With Triple Selfie Cameras

LG Patents A Smartphone With Triple Selfie Cameras

Korean smartphone manufacturer, LG is known for making smartphones that have uncommon and distinctive features. Earlier this year it showcased the innovative V50 ThinQ that has an attachable second display. Freshly granted patents to the company indicate that it is working on yet another smartphone with unique elements. The patent granted to LG reveals a smartphone that has triple selfie cameras which is a world first except for the swivel camera on the Galaxy A80.

    Patent Disclosures

The patent for the aforementioned smartphone was granted to LG by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) on the 19th of April 2019. The patent exhibits a smartphone which is highly reminiscent of several LG devices from the past. However, as previously mentioned, the freshly patented handset has triple selfie cameras which are housed in a wide notch at the top of the display.

    LG G8 ThinQ

The rear of the LG smartphone harbours a triple camera setup and a fingerprint sensor. The right side of the device is occupied by the SIM card tray and the power button while its left side is occupied by the volume rockers. The patent exhibits that the top of the device lacks any controls and ports while its bottom houses the loudspeaker griller and a USB port.

What Could Three Front Cameras Be Used For?

Reportedly, the front and rear camera setup of the LG smartphone will utilise a set of similar camera sensors. Like the previously launched LG V50 ThinQ, the upcoming smartphone may have a 12 MP standard sensor, 12 MP telephoto sensor and a 16 MP ultrawide sensor. Furthermore, the company can even opt for a TOF sensor instead of an ultrawide sensor. All in all, precise details about the device will only be publicised once it is addressed by the company.

  • LG Patents Smartphone With A Foldable Transparent Display

LG Patents Smartphone With A Foldable Transparent Display

In answer to “Is there any more innovation left for future devices?”, smartphone brands are patenting technologies that were never-heard-of-before. For instance, Lenovo previously patented a clamshell foldable design with a narrow display, and Xiaomi was granted a patent for a smartphone with a bottom notch. South-Korean multinational technology company, LG has been granted a patent for a smartphone with a foldable transparent display.

The company has been experimenting with the transparent screen design for quite some time now, which was last spotted at CES 2019 (Consumers Electronics Show) when LG showcased a transparent OLED television. Its display had a transparency of 40%. Previously, on SID (Society for Information Display), LG unveiled a flexible and transparent 4K UHD OLED display with a screen size of 77 inches. It may be possible that the company incorporates a similar technology in its future smartphone designs.

    About The Patent

On April 9, 2019, a patent was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Originally filed by LG Electronics more than three years ago, the patent clearly depicts a smartphone with a flexible transparent display. A lot of details are included in the patent, such as the UI (User Interface), operation and the materials required to make the display. This may very well be the first foldable transparent smartphone of its kind.

    Design And Features

As per the patent, the smartphone is entirely made of the flexible display, which is incorporated both on the inside and outside the foldable smartphone. The handset can be unfolded to almost double its size, which then enables the user to operate it in the tablet mode. While unfolded, both the left and the right parts can independently turn opaque or transparent, indicating that separate modules will be used for the two adjacent sides of the device. As per the patent, the transparency of the smartphone changes with the way it is held, which is quite interesting.

If the smartphone is lying flat on a surface, the display will exhibit a very low degree of transparency. However, when the smartphone is picked up and folded, the transparency will be clearly visible. Upon increasing the transparency beyond 20%, the rear touch sensor of the device is enabled, with the help of which users can operate the flexible transparent display from the rear. This feature seeks to maximize functionality in such a smartphone.

    Expected Availability

Also Read: Research Claims Most Pixel And OnePlus Buyers Are Former Samsung Smartphone Owners

The device will feature a multi-lens camera system, with a multi-camera rear module and a single front camera. A piece of technology like this can still take a lot of time before being commercialized and incorporated in a smartphone. However, considering that foldable smartphones were not even a viable idea some years before, we could see LG releasing their very own flexible transparent smartphone over the course of the next few years. And of course, it will be nothing like any other smartphone released till now.

The detailed patent can be viewed by clicking here.

  • LG Granted Patent For OLED TVs With Rollable Display

LG Granted Patent For OLED TVs With Rollable Display

With the evolution of all forms of technology, TVs are not far behind. In the modern day, a TV is not only limited to its functions and features but it is also something that can improve the aesthetic value of a living room. Manufacturers like Samsung, LG and Sony have a strong grip over the market in terms of TVs. Although the focus from TVs has now shifted to smartphones and mobile devices, these handheld gadgets cannot replace a large screen TV entirely at least for now. LG was granted a patent for a futuristic television that has an unconventional rollable display.

LG Electronics filed three patents with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) in August 2018. The KIPO published the three patents on February 28, 2019, and they clearly depict a roll-up display that emerges from a housing.

    Design And Features

LG unveiled its first rollable TV at the CES 2018 (Consumer Electronics Show). The company showcased a 65-inch 4K OLED TV called the LG Roled, or the LG Signature OLED R9. It retracts into a cuboidal shaped enclosure when not in use. The company previously stated that the rollable OLED TV will go on sale this year itself. This time, LG has moved past the rollable TV, instead, it is just including a rollable screen in a housing-cum-base for the device.

The flexible screen is housed in three different types of casings, as shown in the patent images. The housing sports a triangular design to prevent the flexible screen from bending over. All three housing designs are a bit different from each other. The reason for this is not clear, but it may be because LG is testing out the most stable base for the Roll-up screen.

The TV can also function as a speaker system if the display is not completely raised. Similar to LG’s TV at the CES, the upcoming TV may be equipped with a 100 Watt Dolby Atmos Speaker. The flexible screen can be completely rolled out to have a normally functioning television. In 2018, LG was granted a patent for a similar flexible display for its smartphone.

    Availability

No information regarding the futuristic television is available yet, although it seems that the company will take its time to polish the technology before releasing it in the market. As per reports, Samsung is also planning to release a rollable TV whose screen can be rolled towards the sides unlike LG’s design. The TV is expected to be placed at a higher price point too, owing to the technology implemented in the same.

  • LG Announces The G8 ThinQ At The MWC 2019

LG Announces The G8 ThinQ At The MWC 2019

LG announced its premium smartphones for this season, which are the LG V50 ThinQ 5G and the LG G8 ThinQ. The highly-anticipated devices are finally released and their first impressions are very promising. Both the smartphones run on Snapdragon 855 SoCs and are targeted towards the premium smartphone segment. The LG G8 ThinQ is the successor to last year’s G7 ThinQ, and the device brings some really nice features to the table.

    Design And Display

The G8 ThinQ stands out owing to its glass-sandwich design built around a metal frame. Glass panels adorn both the front and the back of the device, which are protected by Gorilla Glass on both the sides. Interestingly, the rear of the device has Gorilla Glass 6, while the display is covered by Gorilla Glass 5. The bezels are thin, but not thin enough, giving the G8 an 83.5 percent screen-to-body ratio.

It has a 6.1 inch QHD+ FullVision OLED display, which has a resolution of 3120 x 1440 px. The screen has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio with a pixel density of 537 ppi and HDR 10 support. The device has a similar notch to the newly announced LG V50 ThinQ, which looks a tad bit like the iPhone X. The reason behind the conservative notch is the 3D ToF sensor, which is housed in the notch with the front camera.

    Specifications And Memory

The G8 ThinQ runs on a 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset, which comprises of an octa-core processor (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485, 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 and 4×8 GHz Kryo 485) and the Adreno 640 GPU. In terms of memory, the smartphone packs 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB internal storage, which can be further expanded using the microSD slot with support for up to 2TB microSD cards. It will run Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box.

    Camera

The triple camera module on the back panel of the LG G8 ThinQ is almost identical to the setup on the V50 ThinQ. The module is housed under the Gorilla Glass panel, implying that it doesn’t protrude from the surface at all. It comprises of a 12MP (f/1.5) camera sensor, a 12MP (f/2.4) telephoto sensor and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera. It is speculated that the device may be sold in another ‘market dependant’ variant with only a dual camera setup. In terms of the front camera, the device has a single 8 MP (f/1.7) sensor, but the highlight is the 3D Time of flight sensor placed right next to the front camera. The sensor has some really interesting capabilities, which will be discussed later.

    Hardware And Features

The device has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which lies next to the USB Type C port and a ‘grille’ at the bottom of the device. One of the highlighting aspects of the LG G8 ThinQ is the resonating panel that can produce sound. Known as the CSO (Crystal Sound OLED), LG claims that the panel act as stereo speakers and adds an acoustic touch to the sound quality. Moreover, the CSO also acts as an earpiece for receiving phone calls, so users can literally listen to any part of the screen while conversing. The beforementioned ‘grille’ may be a part of the resonating chamber beneath the screen which is used to redirect audio. 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC is integrated with in addition to DTS:X 3D Surround Sound for headphones. The device packs a 3,500 mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0. It is also IP68 dust and water resistant and meets 14 MIL-STD 810G standards, which means that it can survive drops of over 8 feet without taking any damage.

The LG G8 ThinQ has support for Portrait Video Recording in the front camera. It is really intriguing to see how the device will record videos with the bokeh effect. Also, as mentioned previously, the handset has a front facing 3D ToF sensor. Positioning it at the front ensures more functionality from the sensor. Also called the ‘Z Camera’, it claims to be more precise than a dot projector and faster than Apple’s current ‘Face ID’ technology. Also, the ToF sensor can capture an accurate image of a user’s palm – complete with wrinkles and the blood flowing through the veins. Since every person has unique wrinkles and veins, placing the hand in front of the sensor will instantly unlock the smartphone. It can also be used for hand gestures to control various apps in the device. It is still unclear how practical can this be, but sure, it’s an example of ‘useful innovation’ by LG.

LG Announces The V50 ThinQ 5G At MWC 2019

Amidst the plethora of smartphones being showcased at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona, LG announced its flagship smartphones for this season, which are the LG V50 ThinQ 5G and the LG G8 ThinQ. The much-anticipated devices are out in the open and their first impressions are very promising. Both the smartphones pack Snapdragon 855 chipsets with multiple rear cameras and are aiming towards targeting the premium smartphone segment. The V50 ThinQ is LG’s next big leap after the V40 ThinQ. The smartphone gathered a lot of attention at the event.

    Design And Display

The V50 ThinQ is a dual glass smartphone with a glass-sandwich design, which gives the smartphone an elegant look. The device sports a 6.4 inch OLED screen with a resolution of 3120 x 1440 px and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The display panel has a pixel density of 537 ppi, and supports HDR 10. It has a similar notch to the iPhone X and very narrow bezels that allow the display to seamlessly blend into the aluminium frame of the device. The device has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a regular USB-C port, and a stereo-speakers setup.

    Specifications And Memory

The LG V50 ThinQ runs on the 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset, which consists of an octa-core processor (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485, 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 and 4×8 GHz Kryo 485) and the Adreno 640 GPU. The device also features Qualcomm’s 5G modem. In addition, the V50 has an advanced cooling system to keep the temperature of the device under check. It runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box, with a layer of LG UX on top. The device has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded via the microSD slot.

    Camera

The V50 ThinQ features a triple rear camera setup, which comprises of a 12MP (f/1.5) camera sensor, a 12MP (f/2.4) telephoto sensor and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle snapper. The camera also supports Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for taking high quality blur free images. In addition, the smartphone sports a dual front camera module which is housed in the notch along with the earpiece. The selfie camera setup consists of an 8MP (f/1.9) standard sensor and a 5MP (f/2.2) wide-angle camera.

    Additional Features

Unlike its premium contenders, the LG V50 ThinQ does not support an in-display fingerprint sensor. Instead, it has a rear mounted fingerprint sensor and face unlock for security purposes. The device is IP68 dust and water resistant and meets 14 MIL-STD 810G standards, which means that it can survive drops of over 8 feet without taking any damage.

The smartphone packs a large 4,000 mAh battery, which is surprising considering the fact that the V50 ThinQ is just 8mm thin. Furthermore, the device promises to deliver high quality audio using 2-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, DTS and Surround sound. LG has also introduced a dual screen accessory with the smartphone, which enables the LG V50 ThinQ to essentially act as a foldable device. It is actually a case with a 6.2 inch 2160 x 1080 px display that can be attached to the V50 ThinQ via the pogo pins present on the rear end of the device. Although the case adds an extra 131 g of weight to the device, it can enhance multitasking experience and act as a gaming controller – of sorts.
