  • The End : Apple ends TV Rentals, Google Dissolves Slide and Facebook Kills Deals

Its looks like clean up time. Last week Apple ended their TV rentals all together, A statement from Fox  suggests that the studio was no longer interested in rentals, either:

After carefully considering the results of the rental trial, it became clear that content ownership is a more attractive long-term value proposition both for iTunes customers and for our business. To further enhance the value of ownership, we are working with Apple to make content available within their new cloud-based service.”

Ex- Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his team had worked hard throughout last year to push TV rentals to end users at aggressive pricing. almost 1/3 the buy it price. But looks like lack of support from TV networks means that Apple would no longer be able to push rentals out the door.

Google on the other hand decided to dissolve Slide, a company that was bought by Google just a year ago for 200 million. Slide CEO Max Levchin decided to leave Google for other opportunities. A google spokesperson commented:

Max has decided to leave Slide and Google to pursue other opportunities, and we wish him the best. Most of the team from Slide will remain at Google to work on other opportunities.”

Slide, a social apps company, had an extensive portfolio of not so popular apps including  SuperPoke Pets, Disco and photo-sharing app Photovine, which was released only last week. The apps will be discontinued within the next few months.

Also Facebook will discontinue its deals product, the company said today in a statement released to Reuters and other outlets.

The Facebook Deals product, which offered discounted coupons for local businesses, had launched only four months ago. Its shutdown follows Facebook’s discontinuation earlier this week of its location-based check-in feature for mobile users in favor of broader place-tagging tools. Here’s Facebook’s statement:

After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.

Facebook deals tried to cash in on the public attraction to Groupon, LivingSocial, Google deals etc.

Looks like the new implementation and acquisitions are not working out for these tech giants. and its time for cleanup.

  • Tata Communications launches its Next-Generation Ethernet network in India (PR)

Tata Communications has announced the integration of its India infrastructure into its Next Generation Ethernet (NGE) network architecture. The integration is taking place across 11 Indian cities, covering New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon, Pune, Hyderabad, Kochi, Noida, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. The in-country nodes for connecting the carrier’s domestic NGE network with its international backbone are in Mumbai and Chennai.

Tata also promises  higher speed, enhanced security and improved troubleshooting capabilities for those with early subscriptions.

Tata Communications first to use PBB technology globally

The new NGE network will provide industry-leading network services for both service providers and enterprises, enabling higher speed, enhanced security and improved troubleshooting capabilities. Tata Communications’ high-performance Ethernet services are provided throughout the country together with services connecting India to business centres throughout the world. Much of India’s Ethernet growth will come as a result of the adoption of more sophisticated and efficient multi-point networks. This necessitated the upgrading of the company’s extensive Ethernet network in the country and led to the deployment of the Cisco ASR 9000 platform that enables Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB).

Ravi Pandey, Industry Analyst, ICT Practice, South Asia & Middle East Region, Frost & Sullivan said at the launch event today, ‘For FY 10-11 the Indian Enterprise Telecom market stands at INR 63,400 Cr with around 11% coming from Enterprise Data Services. The data services market which stands at INR 6,660 Cr will continue to grow at a CAGR of 12% for the next five years. Ethernet, which has been witnessing traction from verticals like IT/ITeS, BFSI and Media that run bandwidth intensive applications, will grow at a CAGR of 32% for the next five years.’

‘Ethernet is one of fastest growing segments for the data services market and for FY 10-11 the contribution of Ethernet services accounts for three per cent and stands at INR 202 Cr, however, the segment is poised to grow to INR 800 Cr by FY 16,’ added Pandey.

Large scale data centre build-outs in the last few years have resulted in application centralisation & demand for mission critical data centre connectivity. Scalability along with lower port costs & the ability of Ethernet to ride on legacy based WAN services is driving the demand for Ethernet in India. ‘The primary growth drivers for the Ethernet market in India are IP migration, evolution of borderless enterprises, compliances/regulations, business continuity & disaster recovery centres as well as the convergence of business, residential and wireless networks’ concluded Pandey.

Tata Communications continues to build on its unique and diverse global footprint with the addition of PBB technology, ensuring that its customers have access to a bandwidth-efficient, scalable, carrier grade network, now and well into the future.

‘With the Indian enterprise data market poised to grow significantly in the next five years, fuelled by bandwidth intensive applications, the market is seeking better and more extensive Ethernet services. While Tata Communications already offers multi-point service to its customers globally, the only way to increase multi-point capability and add more innovative Ethernet services and performance guarantees in the future is to move to the new industry standard of Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB), effectively addressing critical limitations of the existing technology,’ said John Hoffman, Head of Ethernet Product Management, Tata Communications.

Tata Communications Next Generation Ethernet with PBB technology allows:

o Greater numbers of customers and higher bandwidth on the backbone

o Better isolation of customers from Denial of Service attacks, ensuring even greater security and reliability

o Improved performance monitoring with latency and packet loss as standard items in the Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

Tata Communications’ new Ethernet network core carries only Ethernet traffic, unlike competing operators who are building converged MPLS and VPLS-based networks to carry a mixture of private, public IP traffic and Ethernet services. As a result, Tata Communications can provide a wide range of unique Ethernet services with native Ethernet Operations Administration and Maintenance (OAM) management throughout. The Next Generation Ethernet core also allows Tata Communications to continue to provide its Ethernet customers with the ability to select specific routes through its network (for diversity, latency or cost reasons),

As a further evolution of Tata Communications’ Ethernet network, the company will also be launching an enhanced multipoint service, burstability with usage-based billing together with a dedicated Ethernet service that can scale from 1,000 – 10,000 Meg in 500 Meg increments. The company is also now able to ensure higher network quality as a result of being able to monitor each and every customer and class of service, independently.

SEOUL–(Korea Newswire) August 28, 2011 — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced LTE editions of its GALAXY S II and GALAXY Tab 8.9. These stylish devices now offer high-speed 4G connectivity in addition to power, portability and second-to-none screen technology.

“With the introduction of GALAXY S II LTE and GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE, we will take the capabilities of these devices to a whole new level. LTE redefines the user experience made possible by these devices and opens entirely new possibilities in terms of content viewing, sharing, quality and connectivity,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

“This is a milestone in our commitment to lead the charge in 4G mobile telephony around the world, both in terms of back-end network solutions for service providers and the development of powerful consumer handsets,” added Shin.

When connected to a 4G network, LTE technology allows portable devices to download high-quality files at speeds of up to 100Mbps, and to upload at speeds of 50Mbps theoretically – five times faster than even the quickest HSPA+ connection. This means that a four-minute long MP3 track can be downloaded in 0.3 seconds, or an entire film file in less than two minutes.

The enhanced connectivity afforded by LTE technology opens up a range of possibilities for users: Features like social gaming, video conferencing and high-quality media streaming can all be enjoyed seamlessly, with vast improvements in download times and connectivity. 4G technology also enables the seamless and near-instant sharing of multimedia content with friends and family, ensuring that users can share the experiences they love whenever they want.

The addition of LTE to the Samsung GALAXY portfolio also opens further opportunities for mobile application and content developers creating a new generation of mobile services that take full advantage of increased bandwidth and improved connectivity.

    GALAXY S II LTE

In addition to offering a high standard of connectivity, the GALAXY S II LTE delivers powerful performance due to its 1.5GHz dual core processor. Superior 3D graphic performance makes games and video consumption fast and smooth, while popular Web pages like Google, Yahoo and YouTube can load easily, giving customers instant access to the information they need.

A 4.5″ Super AMOLED Plus display provides stunning visual clarity, with HD video and images taken on the device’s 8MP camera displayed in full vivid color. The GALAXY S II LTE also offers a rich content experience, with Social, Game and Music hubs all included, while the Readers Hub will be available for download after launch. These are in addition to a number of enterprise solutions aimed at increasing productivity. Running on Android 2.3, the GALAXY S II LTE is easy and intuitive to use.

Additionally, the GALAXY S II LTE can also be connected to up to eight devices via WiFi, meaning that files can be quickly and seamlessly synchronized with laptops, tablets and other Smartphones.

    GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE

The LTE edition of the GALAXY Tab 8.9 is incredibly portable, measuring just 8.6mm thin while weighing only 455g. The boosted connectivity and genuine portability ensures that the GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE is the ideal device for modern professionals, who need to stay productive and entertained while on the move. LTE capabilities enable video conferences to be held without need to worry about failing connections, while the 8.9″ screen enables easy rendering of business content such as presentations. The TouchWiz interface enables an intuitive user experience, enhanced by the space and freedom provided by the large display.

Whether writing emails on a trip or reading an eBook in bed, the GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE provides the ultimate tablet experience without compromising mobility.[/toggle]

  • Microsoft confirms 3D compatibility in Halo, Xbox 360 Remake

Microsoft confirms 3D compatibility in Halo, Xbox 360 Remake

Microsoft has finally confirmed 3D gaming for XBox 360. This comes almost a year after Sony added 3D support to their PS3. Joystiq experienced a demo at Gamescom in Germany, and reports that it only works with the game’s updated graphics mode, and that the game’s producer claims the framerate will stay consistent even in 3D. While there are already a number of Xbox 360 games that support 3DTVs.

Epic Games had also announced earlier this month the Gears of War 3 will also support 3D, but this is the first instance of game from Microsoft. Its good news for those already on the 3DTV bandwagon, but not too great for people who don’t want to loose their sight and hemorrhage their brains with excessive 3D.
