Sony Fined $395K For 2011 PlayStation Network Hack, Plans Appeal

sony

Sony Computer Entertainment has been fined a record £250,000 by the data protection watchdog after the personal details of millions of gamers – including passwords and credit card numbers – were leaked online.

The Information Commissioner’s Office on Thursday said the security breach was “one of the most serious” it has handled under the Data Protection Act. The £250,000 fine is the maximum penalty awarded by the ICO against a private company.

The privacy blunder happened in April 2011, when computer hackers targeted the Sony PlayStation Network. It compromised the personal information of millions of customers, including names, addresses, e-mail addresses, dates of birth and account passwords. Customers’ payment card details were also at risk, the ICO said.

“An ICO investigation found that the attack could have been prevented if the software had been up to date, while technical developments also meant passwords were not secure,” it added.

Sony, however, has released a statement saying that it plans to appeal the fine.

“Sony Computer Entertainment Europe strongly disagrees with the ICO’s ruling and is planning an appeal,” it said. “SCEE notes, however, that the ICO recognises Sony was the victim of “a focused and determined criminal attack,” that “there is no evidence that encrypted payment card details were accessed,” and that “personal data is unlikely to have been used for fraudulent purposes” following the attack on the PlayStation Network.”

Sony executives, including President and CEO of Sony Corporation Kazuo Hirai, made a public apology for the PSN hack in May 2011

15 Year Old Hacker ‘Cosmo The God’ Banned From Internet For 6 Years

hacker

A 15-year-old UG Nazi hacker going by the name of Cosmo or Cosmo the God was sentenced in juvenile court on Wednesday with terms for six years without any computers or Internet, until his 21st birthday.

During these 6 years, he’ll need approval from his parole officer to access the internet. Wired report that hacker resides in Long Beach, California, and began as a politicized group that opposed SOPA, took down a bevy of websites this year, including those for NASDAQ, CIA.gov, and UFC.com. It redirected 4Chan’s DNS to point to its own Twitter feed.

Hacker pled guilty to more than a few felonies, with charges ranging from credit card fraud to online impersonation. The probation that Cosmo agreed to as part of his plea limits his use of the internet to solely educational purposes, and all use will be supervised.

As part of the hacker group UGNazi, he was able to gain access to accounts on sites including Amazon, PayPal, Microsoft, Netflix, and many more.

He is prohibited from having contact with any members or associates of UG Nazi or Anonymous, along with a specified list of other individuals. Also, according to Cosmo, violating any of these terms will result in a three-year prison term.

• Blizzard Battle.net Security Breached, Passwords Accessed

Blizzard Battle.net Security Breached, Passwords Accessed

Account details for millions of players have been stolen in a hack attack on Blizzard, the maker of World of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo.

Blizzard revealed details of the breach in a message posted to its Battle.net account management service. Players in North America should change their login details for the account management service, said Blizzard.

So far, it said, there was no evidence that credit card numbers and other personal details had been taken.

In the message, Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime said it discovered on 4 August that there had been “unauthorized and illegal access” to its internal network.

Its investigation into the breach revealed that whoever broke in got a copy of a list of all email addresses for Battle.net users outside China.

Battle.net is the overarching account management and login service gamers use to play Blizzard games including World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3.

Also accessed was information about the security questions and account authenticators used by players on North American servers. As well as players in the US and Canada this includes people in Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.

The attackers also stole a cryptographically scrambled list of the passwords used on North American Battle.net accounts. The technique Blizzard used to conceal these passwords, said Mr Morhaime, made it hard to unscramble them.

Blizzard said that, as far as it knew, the information stolen would not be enough for attackers to gain unauthorised access to Battle.net accounts.

Despite this, it urged players on North America servers to change their passwords, especially if that secret phrase or character combination was used on other services.

It said it had begun an automatic process to force players to change their secret questions and get those who use authenticators to update their devices.

It said it had found “no evidence” that credit card numbers, billing addresses or real names had been exposed.

“We are truly sorry that this has happened,” said Mr Morhaime.

Paul Ducklin, a researcher at security firm Sophos, said the breach was “painful but probably not too bad” in a blogpost about the attack. He said the way Blizzard stored and managed login and password data was “sensible” and should reduce the theft’s impact.

• Bring Siri dictation to your favorite iDevice – Jailbreak and Siri0us required

Bring Siri dictation to your favorite iDevice – Jailbreak and Siri0us required

A new package for jailbreak friendly iDevices has been released that enables Siri dictation on the iPhone 4 / 3GS and all those that run a Jailbroken iOS 5. The package is available to be downloaded from a repo that uses Siri Api (without permission) to connect to the servers that the speech recognition company hosts for apps instead. This method will allow only dictation on the iPhone and not Siri itself. We have a feeling that the package might be removed soon so get it before it goes.

Check out the demo video below.

Exploit found in Siri’s server would allow you to use Siri on all iDevices, if You own a iPhone 4S

A new twist of development has taken place in porting Siri to other Apple devices. A new exploit found would allow users that already own a iPhone 4S to enjoy the exploits of Siri on other iDevices. Sure a unique identifier could be formed but Apple would easily find it and ban it for abuse.

The best thing here is that this may actually hold possibility for Siri to be ported over to Android and other platforms. But the situation will always remain same. You will need an identified for the software to work with Apple’s servers.

So, its time to really see if the friend with an iPhone 4S is actually a true friend.

• Apple Batteries Hacked

Apple Batteries Hacked

Did you know that the batteries in your Macbook can be hacked? You didn’t? Well now you do. Laptop batteries have evolved from being just batteries to a system that incorporates a microprocessor with a firmware to control it. This firmware performs various functions such as charging and discharging the battery, providing information on battery condition and charge rates, and telling the computer how much juice is left.

Apple has, in the past, released hotfixes for malfunctioning batteries, and by analyzing these hotfixes, security researcher Charlie Miller has gained direct access to the embedded firmware. He has found some flaws in Apple’s firmware which allow malicious code to be embedded. So what can this malicious coded do? Well for starters it can brick your battery, which means that it will neither charge nor discharge itself. It could provide false information about the battery to the computer. This code can also execute software on your MacBook and no amount of anti-virus software and system formats can get rid of it, because its not on the system.

The good news is that no amount of malicious code can make your battery overheat and explode. The bad news is that patching these vulnerabilities means that Apple will no longer be able to provide hotfixes for its batteries.

• Al-Qaida Communications Offline

Terrorist group Al-Qaida has been left without a distribution channel on the Internet, says terrorism expert Evan Kohlmann of Flashpoint Partners. In an e-mail he sent on Wednesday, he said
I really can’t say for certain how or why this happened, other than that it involved apparently separate attacks on both the domain name and data server used by al-Qaida’s trusted forum, Al-Shamukh. That kind of coordinated event doesn’t typically occur by happenstance.
Kohlmann, who has spent a decade tracking Al-Qaida, has said that other jihadi forums have been left online for the “rabble” to communicate. However, none of these forums are trusted by members of Al-Qaida. The incident, which started around 72 hours ago, began with the hijacking of the primary web domain used by the Shamukh chat forum, which disseminates propaganda on behalf of Al-Qaida. The next phase of the attack involved crippling the Shamukh website along with two other top level jihadi forums, including the Arabic-language Ansar al-Mujahideen Network.

He said that Al-Qaida most certainly had a backup of the Shamukh forum database, but there are no other channels left for the terrorist organisation to distribute new material. Either the forum must be brought back online, or they must establish a new relationship with another forum.

A list of potential suspects who brought down the Al-Qaida site includes government sponsored hackers from the US and the UK as well as independent cyber vigilantes.
