When Google released their Chromebook Pixel earlier this year, its pixel density topped anything on the market, including Apple’s Retina MacBook. That could be set to change however, as Samsung is working on a display that could best both those devices.
Samsung is preparing to showcase what could be the sharpest display to ever debut on a 13-inch notebook. At this year’s Display Week 2013, Samsung will flaunt a 13.3-inch notebook display with a 3200 x 1800 pixel resolution and 276 pixels per inch.
This beats Apple’s 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro by a decent margin, which comes with a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1600 and 227 ppi. It also outshines Google’s 2560 x 1700- resolution Chromebook Pixel, which comes with a 12-inch display packing 239 ppi.
By utilizing a decreased number of driver circuits and increased LED BLU efficiency, the duo will also deliver up to 30% energy savings compared to the current generation of displays, said Samsung.
As Laptop Mag reports, Samsung will also show off a 10.1-inch 2560 x 1600 resolution touch screen for tablets and an 85-inch LCD panel for TVs that enables local-dimming control. This means that color will render more vividly on the 85-inch screen with higher contrast and “80 percent brightness uniformity.”
It certainly sounds enticing, especially when you consider the quality of the displays on both Retina MacBook Pro’s, and even the Chromebook Pixel. More competition in the laptop display space can only be good news in the long run.
These newest displays come on the heels of a recent announcement by Sharp, where they unveiled that they will begin producing IGZO panels with UltraHD resolutions for notebooks. It is not yet known if the panels will simply be displayed or will be included as part of actual products, but we should know more in the coming days.
Apple has launched a new Macbook Pro 13 Retina Display, amongst the many things the company is going to reveal. The new Macbook Pro 13 inch with retina is just .75-inches thick.” That’s 20% thinner than before”. Its also only 3.5 pounds, about a full pound lighter than before, and the lightest MacBook ever. The Macbook Pro Retina 3 inch has a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, That’s a 4x boost from the original Macbook Pro 13 incher.
The new resolution is 2x the resolution of a 1080p display, and the display has a 29% higher contrast ratio over the previous Pro and 75% reduced glare. The usual Facetime HD camera with 720p recording, stereo mics and speakers, backlit keyboard are also found in the device.
Designed in the same way as the 15 inch with retina display, the new 13 incher has side ventilation and a dual fan system, configurable upto 768GB of flash storage, 8GB of RAM, Core i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge chips, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4. HD 4000 graphics. The Macbook Pro 13 Retina also offers upto 7 hours of battery life.
Pricing of the Retina version of the 13 inch is kept safley in the middle of them all at a $1,699 for the base model, with a 2.5GHz i5, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage. The new Macbook Pro 13 is shipping starting today from all countries with online Apple Stores.
Tim Stevens has just announced that the Mac Market has outgrown the PC market by 7 times. The Mac desktops are the number one in the world, and so are the Macbook Laptops.
What appear to be images of a Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch running Windows, yep Windows, have been found online. The possible leak shows a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD (4 X resolution than the existing MacBook Pro) there are also dual Thunderbolt ports and HDMI video that shipped with15inch variant.
No information on how the computer performs or if it runs on the Ivy Bridge platform, the images do show Windows running on it. However the macbook pro 13 inch with Retina display could be a perfect balance between a unibody and SSD design and portability.
The images are also speculated to be of a Chinese ripoff replica running windows on substandard hardware, like the macbook Air replica seen earlier.
Apple will hold a special event on Oct 23rd to launch several products including the new iPad Mini and the rumored revised Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina Display.
Motorola’s biggest ever complaint against Apple involves 7 technologies that are now owned by Motorola, such as syncing messages between devices and bookmarking media playback on one device to resume on another. Although Apple has been using these technologies since 2005 in podcasts and Movies from iTunes, Motorola’s complaint only targets the newer iPad, iPhone 4s and other devices in the bottom line of Apple’s retail chain.
The complaint may take 6 months to over a year to resolve. By then Apple’s new lineup of technologies should be out. But, the question on everyone’s mind remains whether Apple, with their billions of dollars of corp warfare funds, will let this go easy.
A new cyber surveillance virus has been found in the Middle East that can spy on financial transactions, email and social networking activity, according to a leading computer security firm, Kaspersky Lab.
Dubbed Gauss, the virus may also be capable of attacking critical infrastructure and was built in the same laboratories as Stuxnet, the computer worm widely believed to have been used by the United States and Israel to attack Iran’s nuclear program, Kaspersky Lab said on Thursday.
The Moscow-based firm said it found Gauss had infected personal computers in Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Territories. It declined to speculate on who was behind the virus but said it was related to Stuxnet and two other cyber espionage tools, Flame and Duqu.
“After looking at Stuxnet, Duqu and Flame, we can say with a high degree of certainty that Gauss comes from the same ‘factory’ or ‘factories,’” Kaspersky Lab said in a posting on its website. “All these attack toolkits represent the high end of nation-state-sponsored cyber-espionage and cyber war operations.”
Kaspersky Lab’s findings are likely to fuel a growing international debate over the development and use of cyber weapons. Those discussions were stirred up by the discovery of Flame in May by Kaspersky and others. Washington has declined comment on whether it was behind Stuxnet.
According to Kaspersky Lab, Gauss can steal Internet browser passwords and other data, send information about system configurations, steal credentials for accessing banking systems in the Middle East, and hijack login information for social networking sites, email and instant messaging accounts.
Modules in the Gauss virus have internal names that Kaspersky Lab researchers believe were chosen to pay homage to famous mathematicians and philosophers, including Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss, Kurt Godel and Joseph-Louis Lagrange.
Kaspersky Lab said it called the virus Gauss because that is the name of the most important module, which implements its data-stealing capabilities.
One of the firm’s top researchers said Gauss also contains a module known as “Godel” that may include a Stuxnet-like weapon for attacking industrial control systems.
Stuxnet, discovered in 2010, attacked via USB drives and was designed to attack computers that controlled the centrifuges at a uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, Iran.
Roel Schouwenberg, a senior researcher with Kaspersky, said the Godel code may include a similar “warhead.”
Godel copies a compressed, encrypted program onto USB drives. That program will only decompress and activate when it comes in contact with a targeted system.
While Kaspersky has yet to fully crack Godel’s code, Schouwenberg said he suspects it is a cyber weapon designed to cause physical damage and that its developers went to a lot of trouble to hide its purpose, using an encryption scheme that could take months or even years to unravel.
CODE BREAKERS WANTED
He said the prospect that a cyber weapon like Gauss or Stuxnet could attack critical infrastructure keeps him up at night.
“They could do pretty much anything,” he said. “A few weeks ago when power went out in and around (Washington) D.C., my first thought was a cyber weapon.”
Kaspersky said it is searching for “world-class” cryptographers to help it break the code.
A United Nations agency that advises countries on protecting critical infrastructure plans to send an alert on the mysterious code.
“We are going to, of course, inform member states that there is an unknown payload,” said Marco Obiso, a cyber security coordinator for the U.N.’s Geneva-based International Telecommunications Union, or ITU.
“We don’t know what exactly it does. We can have some ideas. We are going to emphasize this,” he said.
The ITU issued a warning about Flame shortly after the virus was unveiled by Kaspersky in late May. The agency told member nations that Flame could potentially be used to attack critical infrastructure, according to Obiso.
At the time, experts knew only that Flame was a sophisticated espionage tool; they were not certain it could damage computer networks.
Several weeks later, researchers at another security firm, Symantec Corp, confirmed suspicions that Flame was capable of deleting computer data and likely was used to attack Iran in April.
Iran blamed Flame for causing data loss on computers in the country’s main oil export terminal and Oil Ministry. Reports of the data losses prompted the ITU to ask Kaspersky to search for a data-wiping virus, which resulted in its discovery of Flame and Gauss.

Apple has rejoined an environmental ratings scheme a week after quitting the program. The firm published a letter on its site saying it had realized the move had been “a mistake” after many of its customers had complained.
The u-turn follows an announcement by San Francisco city officials that they planned to ban local agencies from buying Apple Mac computers saying at the time that they hoped Apple would reconsider.
Apple helped set up the EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) registry in 2006. It is designed to identify which electronic devices pose the least risk to the environment.
In dropping out last month from the registry, Apple offered no explanation but speculation centered around its use of batteries on some MacBooks which are glued into the frame and thus are not easily recycled.
