  • A watch made from the Statue of Liberty!

A watch made from the Statue of Liberty!

    Whoops! Something went wrong!

A watch for the Patriots! The newest “DNA” watch collection from Romain Jerome will be the Liberty DNA timepieces. These watches will each incorporate some metal from the actual Statue of Liberty, and feature a unique design meant to honor the statue while not simply featuring imagery from it on the case and dial.

The bronze bezel of this 125-piece limited-edition watch is adorned with 12 spikes reminiscent of the statue’s crown. The verdigris dial echoes the color of oxidised copper, the facetted hands are bronze colored and the strap made from vintage brown alligator leather. The medallion on the case-back of the watch depicts the flame of liberty lighting up the stars and stripes of the American flag. The watch will acquire a patina as it ages over time, thereby adopting the color of the original.

Romain Jerome actually has a long history of incorporating exotic materials into its expensive watches. Including volcanic ash, metal from the Titanic, and even dinosaur bones.

Nice way to spend your money on the 4th of July eh?

Chrome No. 1 free app on iTunes

    Whoops! Something went wrong!
Chrome for iOS features tab-syncing and incognito mode.

Within days of it being announced for Apple’s iOS, Google Chrome rocketed to the top by becoming the no. 1 free app on the iTunes app store.

It’s getting decent reviews from users who so far have cumulatively ranked it at 4.5 stars, although the biggest complaint they seem to have is the browser is slow compared with Apple’s Safari which is due to the fact that Apple restricts the use of its Nitro JavaScript engine to Safari and other apps don’t have access to it.

We will be coming out with the Chrome’s review soon, stay tuned.

  • Blackberry 10 devices won’t have physical keyboards

Blackberry 10 devices won’t have physical keyboards

    Whoops! Something went wrong!

The first BlackBerry device running Research In Motion’s new operating software will not have a physical keyboard, only a touchscreen one.

The BlackBerry 10 software will be offered on devices with physical keyboards in the future, but RIM spokeswomen Rebecca Freiburger declined to say when. RIM is expected to start selling BlackBerry 10 touch-screen devices this year.

RIM’s hopes hang on the BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience customers now demand. The Canadian company is preparing to launch the new software later this year, just as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android devices.

If those keyboard-loving customers haven’t already jumped ship, I doubt a couple of months is going to make a huge difference. It’s better for RIM to focus one piece of hardware–one that represents where the industry is headed–than launch Blackberry 10 with a lackluster keyboard model just to appease a fraction of its shrinking customer base.

  • Current line of Windows devices won’t get Windows Phone 8 but 7.8

Current line of Windows devices won’t get Windows Phone 8 but 7.8

    Whoops! Something went wrong!
Existing Windows Phone devices will not be updated to Windows Phone 8

After the launch of Windows Phone 8, Microsoft confirmed that not a single smartphone out right now, not even the Lumia 900, will be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8. The hardware requirements for WP8 preclude its running on any current WP device.  After all, how can single-core devices with WVGA screens take advantage of multi-core and additional resolution support? That part makes sense, but if you’re a recent customer, you might be frustrated.

To keep its existing user happy, Microsoft has launched the Windows Phone 7.8, few software benefits will be included in WP8, and a hearty helping of these killer features (such as the new Start screen) will be available to legacy devices in the form of Windows Phone 7.8. There’ll be support for three tile sizes, with the smallest being fingertip size (a quarter of the standard square). The update will be delivered directly to users, sidestepping carriers, and can be done over WiFi.

Microsoft launches Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.8

    Whoops! Something went wrong!
Windows Phone 8 was revealed at the Windows Phone Summit today

Just days after announcing its first tablet computer, the Surface, Microsoft Corp. revealed Windows Phone 8,  a dramatic update to its phone software, one that won’t be available to current Windows Phones.

If you’re currently holding a Windows Phone device, don’t worry you’d get the Windows Phone 7.8.

The hardware requirements for WP8 preclude its running on any current WP device – not even the Lumia 900! The software will bring Windows phones closer to PCs and tablets running the company’s upcoming Windows 8, which is also scheduled to launch later this year. To ensure current Windows Phone users stay happy: a few software benefits will be included in WP8, and a hearty helping of these killer features (such as the new Start screen) will be available to legacy devices in the form of Windows Phone 7.8. There’ll be support for three tile sizes, with the smallest being fingertip size (a quarter of the standard square). The update will be delivered directly to users, sidestepping carriers, and can be done over WiFi.

    Whoops! Something went wrong!
WP8 would share the same kernel as that of Windows 8 and Windows RT

Windows Phone 8 requires multi-core processors (up to 64), displays up to WXGA (1280 x 768) and external storage on SD. This better, faster hardware will enable new, faster games and other demanding apps which, for the first time, can be written in native code. (C/C++) All this will run on a kernel shared with Windows 8 and Windows RT. In other words Microsoft has managed to get one platform running on desktops, laptops, tablets and phones, the idea being that apps can be more easily ported from one to the next, promising “games we’ve never seen before” running on your phones, with popular titles like Gameloft’s Nova 3 and Zynga’s Draw Something also coming to Windows Phone.

There’s also a new wallet functionality thanks to the NFC support, but reliant on an augmented SIM, not hardware on the phone itself. Nokia maps is now built into the OS, including offline map support.

The OS will be available later this year along with Windows 8 and the new Surface tablets.

Compact & Responsive, the Central Data Hub for SMBs

Taipei, Taiwan—June 19, 2012—Synology® Inc. today launched DiskStation DS112+, an all-in-one NAS server that offers high performance with energy-efficient and quiet design for small and medium businesses.

“With DiskStation DS112+, Synology has introduced an invaluable selection for SMB users where high performance meets eco-friendly design,” said Peter Chen, product manager of Synology Inc. “This is the best option for providing users with fast and reliable solutions to share, sync and backup data with minimal time spent on setup process and management.”

Synology DiskStation DS112+ is powered by a 2.0 GHz processor and includes 512 MB of memory, boasting read and write speeds up to 107 MB/sec and 76 MB/sec respectively in a Windows® environment. In addition, the DS112+ features two USB 3.0 ports to deliver fast file transfer speed up to 5 Gb/sec, a throughput speed at 10 times faster than USB 2.0.

The DS112+’s distinct chassis design enhances the overall airflow to keep the system running cool while minimizing the noise level to 18.4 dB(A) with its two side ventilation openings and a 60 mm low-rotation rear fan. As one of Synology’s top rated power-saving DiskStation, the DS112+ consumes only 14.6 watts in operation and further reduces to 6.34 watts when hard drive enters hibernation mode.

The DS112+ is running on DiskStation Manager 4.0 (DSM 4.0), the operating system of every Synology NAS Server. DSM 4.0 provides rich features to boost users’ productivity and simplify their tasks, all on a sleek user interface optimized for multitasking. Acknowledged for its continuous worldwide recognition, Synology received WINMAG Pro’s “2011 SMB Proof Award” for the same series DS411+II.
