Awesome Tech- An Airbag For Your Smartphone

After aluminium unibody design dominating the industry for a while, glass builds are taking over. From affordable flagship smartphones like the OnePlus 6 to the premium iPhone X, an all-glass build is the new gold standard in smartphone design. However, with a premium look and feel, also comes the danger of shattering that glass. While there are cases that can protect smartphones from damages to a certain extent, they aren’t foolproof.

A new “active damping” case acts as an airbag for your smartphone. Created by Philip Frenzel, an engineer at Aalen University in Germany, this clever case pops opens up to protect your phone when you drop it. His idea won the award from the German Society for Mechatronics, which considered projects from students all over the country.

Frenzel’s idea behind this case was maintaining the phone’s aesthetic while providing the necessary protection. Most secure cases are very bulky and it becomes hard to recognise your phone when it is lathered in a tough plastic case with ugly patterns. With active damping case, there isn’t a layer of unattractive protection in your face all the time. Instead, it enters a safety mode just as it starts free falling to the ground.

After juggling between different ways to protect the phone, Frenzel finally arrived at a very interesting solution. As seen in the video, he went ahead with a set of eight thin metal curls that normally lie flat inside the case. When the phone is released, they pop out and curl up, protecting the edges of the phone from impact. This considerably softens the blow compared to a flat contact with the concrete.

The case looks interesting and in the video, at least, effective. It is yet to enter a production stage and there is still no Kickstarter or Indiegogo page for it. We could be a while away from this case hitting the shelves.

Tesla Makes iPhone Covers Out of Leftover Seat Leather

Leftovers and iPhone covers -yes, those words in the same sentence -in a very unusual turn of events, Tesla has made covers for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus using leftover leather from car-seats. Looks like the world can’t get enough of iPhone covers. After OnePlus, Tesla follows suit with its cases for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Tesla’s Model S is a very popular car, leading the company to increase its production to 50,000 cars per year. Larger production inevitably means larger amounts of waste. However, the car manufacturer found a way to not only put this waste to good use, but also make money out of it.Tesla iPhone Case123

The company has made iPhone cases out of leftover leather meant for its car-seats. The covers are priced at $45 and for an added $5, Tesla will add some credit card slots to it as well. The cover will protect its contents from RFID readers, claims the company.Tesla iPhone Case

The iPhone case will sport Tesla’s logo and has now found itself located on the list of strange items the company has sold in the past. A golf towel, leather driving gloves that also work with touchscreens and a crown jewel made from leftover leather are some of its other unusual items.

  • ExtraVerso: The Phone Cover That Defies Gravity

ExtraVerso: The Phone Cover That Defies Gravity

Have you ever felt like wanting to watch a tv show or YouTube video on your phone, without having to hold it for an hour? Well, ExtraVerso is the answer to your problems. ExtraVerso is a phone cover that has been developed by Flavio and Benedetto, two young entrepreneurs from Italy, that helps us be lazier than we already are.

    Here is what it does:

How it works is, the material on the cover has a suction effect on flat and glassy surfaces. The good thing about this material is that it doesn’t stick to your hands or pockets and doesn’t attract dust either!

    Extraverso 1

The ExtraVerso sticks on glass, mirror, whiteboards, metal, marble, tiles and computer screens.  The cover is made up of two parts- a 3M adhesive that has been developed for being repositionable without leaving any residue on your phone & a lateral bumper that protects the edges of your phone.

    Extraverso 2

One of the best features of this cover is that it is not bulky. The cover + the lateral bumper only add 1.5mm of thickness to the phone, keeping it light and stylish. It also comes with various colours and designs and is even customizable.

A couple of things you might be able to do without having to hold your phone unsteadily are: shoot time-lapse videos, watch a cooking show while actually cooking, getting your make-up right, watching a tv show while eating, and of course take hands-free selfies with a timer.

    extraverso 3

The ExtraVerso covers and bumpers are available for all iPhone 5/5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6 phones. It has also been supported and pledged by many established designers & design houses such as Uber, John Galliano, Superga, E. Marinella, K-Way and Ermenegildo Zegna.

The price of the cover ranges from $20 to $999. However, the ExtraVerso only caters to a certain niche as of now, due to lack of funding, but hope to make the product available everywhere both online and offline, soon.
