SENTINEL – The First Women’s Security App

MindHelix Technologies LLP, a Kochi based IT company, has launched an app called SENTINEL which is the first app designed with women’s security in mind. The app can send instant alerts in case of any problems. A forced power-off of the phone or an improper exit of the application will trigger an alert to be sent. Prolonged signal loss will also cause a ‘fail safe’ alert SMS and email to be sent from the company’s server.

Co-Founder & CEO Christin Emmanuel George said
We want to add a direct emailing or texting to nearest police station as soon as possible. We hope to get their consent in receiving and acting on such information.
According to a survey by Assocham Social Development Foundation, more than 53% of women feel unsafe in their workplace, especially at night. With crimes against the fairer sex on the rise, applications like these could provide a sense of security for women. Records show that crime rates against women have increased dramatically in the metros.

Sentinel can send multiple SMS and e-mail alerts to preconfigured numbers and e-mail ids. The alerts would include last known location, direction of travel, mode of transportation and vehicle number (which the user can enter). The app has been designed for smart phones including all devices with Android, Blackberry, Symbian, iOS and Java operating systems. The application was designed with the urban woman in mind and requires a continuous cellphone signal.

The free app can be downloaded from http://sentinel.mindhelix.com/

Angry Birds – Now on Windows Phone 7

For those of you who own a Windows Phone 7 Smart-phone, there’s some good news! You can now download  Angry Birds from the Marketplace onto your phone. The first time we heard that this game was coming to the platform was in October 2010, even before the mobile OS was launched. A few days before its launch, Microsoft included an image which hinted at the game being a part of the platform. However, Rovio, the company behind the physics game, had not developed a version for the platform.

Microsot and Rovio later made up and the software giant hinted at a 2011 release. The game was scheduled for mid May and then pushed back to 29th June. On Wednesday, users from around the world could download the game from the Marketplace.

Microsoft gets Green Signal from Antitrust for Skype Acquisition

Microsoft has been given the US antitrust approval for the large acquisition of Skype for its VOIP integrations within all of its offerings including, and not limiting to, Windows, Xbox and Zune. The total cost of this is set at US $8.5 Billion and the transfer of funds will commence and end in one single sweep.

Microsoft will be updating the Skype APIs to make them usable within their own infrastructure, and should be updating the end user clients very very soon. Microsoft has constantly repeated that existing Skype users will and should  not be affected by the new changes.

25 Year Old Man Killed by a Chinese Phone

A 25 Year old man, Dhanji Damor from the Panchmahal district of Gujarat, India, was killed by his phone while attempting to make a phone call while the phone was plugged in for charging. He recieved a massive electric shock and was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors at a local hospital.

This just goes to show the shoddy design and construction of devices from China as well as a lack of quality control. If you can’t afford a branded device then it might be worth your life to not buy a cheap knockoff. Its always safer to purchase a device from a known company. It’s incidents like these that give Chinese technology a bad name which is rather scary if you’ve ever taken a look behind your iDevice.

  • Triple Screen Android Phone Concept

    Triple Screen Android Phone Concept

When we first saw this video we were quite impressed with the concept of a triple screen phone. It has a few features we found very interesting such as the rolodex and the book reader app. However, after some heated discussion we came to the conclusion that the third screen doesn’t bring much to the  phone as most functions that it performs can be achieved with just 2 screens. The third screen seems a little over the top and reminds us of the old Paan Parag add when Jalal Agha pulls out a strip of sachets when asked ‘Ek se mera kya hoga?’

The Line Phone – Scalable | Multitouch | Concept

Ever wish you had an iPhone or a Multi-touch smart phone? Well you can wish again because we’ve just found the Line Phone. It has a very interesting multi-touch interface that seems very easy to use and very well thought out. The phone comes with many features that we have come to expect from technology out of the box.

It performs even basic tasks such as photography and Internet surfing with a flair that we cannot find in todays devices. The best thing we like about this concept is its ability to seamlessly scale the size of the display for performing more complex tasks such as Desktop use and Gaming. Check out the video for more info.

  • The Mozilla Seabird Concept

The Mozilla Seabird is a concept device which promises to herald in a future where we have to carry just one device for all our technology needs. It threatens to replace traditional desktops, laptops and even tablets. The device was conceptualized a few years ago, and it seems that the base technology to run this magical device is finally catching up. You never know when your next Android phone might pop out a projected keyboard from the sides. Watch the video above.

Its been a month and more since the new Web OS devices were announced by HP, we have no news or reports of them heading to India. We hope the devices reach India soon, before we run out of the urge to test the new version of WEB OS.
