‘Steve Jobs’ Fails to Woo Fans, Leaves Makers Even More Disappointed

Dampening the spirits of a lot of Michael Fassbender fans, ‘Steve Jobs’ has bombed at the box-office. Hopes had been incredibly high regarding the movie, and thus, this unexpected blow hits harder.

“‘Steve Jobs’ was too brainy, too cold, and too expensive to make it a success,” says Variety’s Brent Lang.

Nothing sums up the reasons for the failure of the eponymous biopic about Apple’s founder, Steve Jobs than the above statement. Hollywood has proved once again that meaty content is not enough for a film to work.

    Michael Fassbender and Steve Jobs
    Fassbender (left) and Jobs (right)

Despite the lack of physical resemblance, Michael Fassbender had fans excited all over the world for his portrayal of the Apple founder. Post evidence of his acting prowess in films like ‘Twelve Years’ A Slave’, there was not much to doubt about his brilliance for an on screen rendition of Steve Jobs.

However, Fassbender still failed to draw as much attention of the mainstream movie-goers as much an actor like Robert Downey Jr., or Leonardo DiCaprio would have. Incidentally, Caprio, along with Christian Bale, were one of the two actors the role of Steve Jobs was first offered to for the movie. When both of them turned it down for various reasons, Fassbender was approached next.

The film shows an insensitive, emotionally abusive protagonist, distanced and detached from his wife and daughter. For all his technological brilliance, the audience clearly did not prefer to root for a character who was a complete jerk to his family. So while Jobs tackled his God-complex, less and less names were added to his fan-list.

‘Steve Jobs’ debuted to a puny $7.3 million, not too far ahead from the $6.7 million of the Ashton Kutcher starrer ‘Jobs’. The former needs to make at least $120 to make up for the investment cost and cash in on a minimum level of expected profits. It has made $10 million so far.

Despite being critically acclaimed, ‘Steve Jobs’ has failed to strike a chord with the audience, primarily because of a dialogue-oriented script and the lack of a more popular name than Michael Fassbender, speculate Hollywood experts.

Audience’s reaction to ‘Steve Jobs’ have further revealed how precariously balanced films are in Hollywood, with absolutely nothing, not even strong scripts and top-drawer performances by the likes of Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet are a surety of a project doing well. If you have managed to take a look at ‘Steve Jobs’, tell us what you felt in the comments below.

  • The New Steve Jobs Trailer Is Here

The New Steve Jobs Trailer Is Here

There is one movie that has been on our minds since we heard about it first; yes, we’re talking about the new Steve Jobs movie. This movie comes with a lot of heavy names from showbiz, with Aaron Sorkin, acclaimed script writer with movies like the Social Network in his kitty, then they have Danny Boyle of Slumdog Billionaire acclaim as the director, and guess who’s playing Steve Jobs himself? Michael Fassbender. You’ll know him as Magneto, but he’s also done some great work with Quentin Tarantino and Steve McQueen. Oh, and he’s also going to be the new Macbeth soon.

We could go on with the big names in this film, but I’m going to leave that for the trailer that you can watch here:

This is the official trailer, but there have been other earlier trailers which seemed to have focused on different things than the official one. The final trailer focuses on his relationship with his daughter more than his genius, it seems to show him as a much more nuanced character than just being a complex genius. The film promises a lot with great reviews after its screening at the Telluride Film festival this year. Of course, there will be comparisons to the previous Jobs film, but then again even on the most shallow grounds of criticism you know who would emerge as the winner between Ashton Kutcher and Michael Fassbender.

Steve Wozniak himself is quoted saying “I felt like I was watching Steve Jobs,” while Fassbender’s co-actors have commented on his almost creepy transformation into Steve Jobs. We will know whether it’ll all pay off once the movie releases on the 9th of October 2015.

  • Life of Jobs: The Man Who Designed the Future

Life of Jobs: The Man Who Designed the Future

Today marks the 60th birth anniversary of Steve Jobs, the founder of the revolutionary technology institution, Apple. Steve Jobs is a cultural icon and is credited with giving a second life to Apple and establishing it as Silicon Valley’s royalty. He died on October 5, 2011, aged 56, but left a lasting legacy.

Steve did not just change the world of computers but led the way in changing the way we watch movies, stream music and consume content on various devices. He is also credited for giving the world some of the best-designed consumer electronics. We look into some of the greatest achievements of this phenomenal individual.

    It’s a Mac Mac World

    steve-jobs-apple-macintosh

When you talk about the history of personal computing, Apple comes out as one of the major pioneers of the revolution. Their desktop computers that employed a graphical user interface and a mouse were instrumental in creating more engaging interaction with the digital machines. Steve had also founded NeXT computers that boasted technologically advanced features. In fact, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web on a NeXT computer at CERN. Apple’s computers are considered the most sought after machinery by creative as well as corporate consumers.

    iPhone to Rule Them All

    Apple iPhone

There are many claimants for the spot of the first smartphone maker. Companies like HTC, Nokia, Microsoft had been in the field of portable computing, but Apple will be considered the standard bearer for the smartphone revolution. With the iPhone, Jobs sold to the world the idea of a key-less, touch-based device that would be at the core of the new age economy. The app market for smart devices also mushroomed all over the world. The recently launched 6th generation iPhone handsets were a major success in the market and gave the company their most profitable quarter ever. iPhone’s features inspired Google’s Android ecosystem which brought smartphone access to a larger population.

    Music On-The-Go

    steve-jobs ipod

“One more thing” is one of the most identifiable catchphrases from Steve Jobs. The iconic three words were spoken before the launch of a game-changing device, the Apple iPod. The portable music player revolutionized the world of music; it set the tone for a plethora of handheld music players, a concept later absorbed into smartphones.

    Stream The World

    steve jobs itunes

Apple’s iTunes service also led to a major shift in the manner in which people consumed video and music content. Through the iTunes store, subscribers could buy music, music videos, television shows, audiobooks, podcasts, movies, and more. We now have services like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify and others who have risen to become the major forces in the streaming business and used by people worldwide.

    Animated Story

    Steve Pixar

In 1986, Steve purchased Pixar Animation Studios from George Lucas. The studio rose to prominence with the release of Toy Story in 1995. It also released several box office hits such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E, andUp. Pixar was purchased by Disney in 2006.

Apple Computers Company was founded in 1976. It was named in remembrance of a happy summer Jobs had spent picking apples. Apple recently launched the new generation of its iPhone line of devices and with that it had its best quarter earnings ever. Steve had been defined by many as “the master evangelist of the digital age” and a “futurist.” Hopefully, he would have appreciated the path Apple is treading on right now.

Universal Studios Shops New Steve Jobs Project

All you Apple fans have something to look forward to. The new Steve Jobs movie has been picked up by Universal Studios. This news surfaced less than a week post Sony Pictures reportedly dropped the project. As per sources, the new Steve Jobs movie has been acquired at a price tag of more than $30 million. Following the last year’s flop Jobs, the yet untitled movie is said to have a much better script, director, and cast.

The upcoming movie based on Walter Isaacson’s biography ‘Steve Jobs’ will be penned by Aaron Sorkin. X-Men star Michael Fassbender is attached to star in the project. The film will be directed by Danny Boyle, the A-list director of Hollywood and winner of 8 Academy Awards. Aaron Sorkin, who has movies like The Social NetworkA Few Good Men and The West Wing in his portfolio, has been a celebrated scriptwriter with a strong hold on biopics. Scott Rudin, the first producer to scoop an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award, Mark Gordon along with Guymon Casady are financially backing the project.

The film was due to start shooting this winter, but because Fassbender’s involvement is announced recently, the same is now likely to be delayed. You can expect the film to go on floors in early 2015.

  • Apple Retains Multi-touch Patent

    Apple Retains Multi-touch Patent

USPTO now once again recognizes patent No. 7,479,949 (for the multi-touch feature) in Apple’s favour after invalidating it in 2012. This happens to be one of the two patents that the ITC has determined was infringed on by Samsung, leading to a current import ban on some older Samsung models.

Titled “Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics,” the ‘949 patent is a broad, sweeping property covering functional aspects of multitouch screens like those found in many smart devices, like the iPhone and iPad.

Steve Jobs is listed as the first of over two dozen inventors on the patent, and it is considered perhaps the most famous of his over 300 credited patents.

    As FOSS Patents notes :

As we speak, the Steve Jobs patent is even stronger than it was before someone (presumably Samsung and Google) challenged it anonymously. On September 4, 2013, the USPTO issued a reexamination certificate confirming the patentability of all 20 claims because the prior art neither anticipated this invention nor renders it obvious.

A number of Apple’s key patents have been challenged for reexamination as its competitors have sought to derail Apple’s claims against them in various court battles.

Apple has also filed an appeal to broaden the US import ban to cover additional Samsung products. The Cupertino company has asked the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to review three more patent cases, following the ITC finding Samsung guilty of two patent infringements already.

Steve Jobs’ High School Girlfriend To Pen New Memoir

Chrisann Brennan was one of Steve Jobs’s first serious loves, his high school girlfriend and the mother of his daughter Lisa. Now Ms. Brennan will tell the story of her relationship with Mr. Jobs, the Apple co-founder who died in 2011, in a new memoir to be published next year. St. Martin’s Press, part of Macmillan, said on Thursday it had acquired the rights to an untitled memoir by Ms. Brennan, who is now a painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
After meeting him at Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif., Ms. Brennan later lived with Mr. Jobs in a cabin, meditated with him and attended lectures. “At 17, Steve had more than a touch of the cool sophistication of a Beat poet,” Ms. Brennan wrote in an article in Rolling Stone after his death. While in her early 20s, she became pregnant and gave birth to their daughter, who is known as Lisa Brennan-Jobs. Mr. Jobs initially denied paternity of his daughter but later developed a closer relationship with her.
St. Martin’s said Ms. Brennan’s memoir would cover a range of subjects, including her relationship with Jobs, the founding of Apple and “Jobs’s enormous appeal, energy and drive as well as his developing ambition and ruthlessness in business and personal dealings.”

  • Apple remembers Steve Jobs With A Tribute

Apple remembers Steve Jobs With A Tribute

Between 1997 and 2011, Steve Jobs was, in many ways, Apple. He was not only the face of the company, but was believed to have been the progenitor for many of the popular products the company brought to market. From the iPod to the iPhone, and later the iPad, there is no doubt, however you may feel about the company, that Apple has changed the world in many ways.

Steve Jobs died one year ago today. Apple has marked the sad anniversary with a short video outlining some of his most important achievements. Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, wrote a letter to employees expressing his gratitude for Jobs’ contributions throughout the years.
Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.

One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for.

    Tim Cook
Visitors to Apple’s web site were greeted to a one-and-a-half minute video titled, “Remembering Steve.” As black and white photos of Jobs filled the screen, viewers hear him delivering some of his most inspiring quotes. Among them:
“There’s an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love. I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been. And we’ve always tried to do that at Apple.”

“This amazing little device holds a thousand songs and goes right in my pocket.”

“An iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator. Are you getting it?”

“It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. It’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities that yields us the result that makes our hearts sing.”

$12,405 Steve Jobs Tribute MacBook Pros To Be Auctioned

Uncover has announced that it will auction off three Steve Jobs tribute MacBook Pro Laptops. The laptops feature the design originally created by a Hong Kong artist that features the silhouette of Steve Jobs superimposed onto the bitten Apple logo.

“A year ago the world lost a force of nature in technology. Steve Jobs’ willpower, creative vision and business instincts disrupted no less than 9 different industries and inspired us all to try and achieve insanely great things,” said Uncover in a written statement. “In his honour we have crafted three MacBook Pro Retina’s, based on the design by Hong Kong-based artist Jonathan Mak. We’ve meticulously cut the silhouette of Jobs from the edges of the Apple logo and filled it up again with the highest quality epoxy. And each has the beautiful but lesser known ‘You can change things’ quote by Steve Jobs laser-tattooed on the bottom, as a covert mantra for inspiration.”

What will these three limited edition laptops be used for? Well, they will actually go to auction with a minimum bid of €9500 (that’s $12,405 USD) each, and the bidding will be going on until Monday night at Midnight ET (Monday at 9 p.m. PT). Although the price is outrageous and not justifiable by most, at least the proceeds from the sale will go to two different charities.

Each of the Retina-equipped tribute MacBook Pro laptops contains the best specifications currently available, including a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and a 750GB SSD.

Apple I gets US $374.5K at Sotheby’s auction and Steve Jobs’ Atari Note gets US $ 27500

    Original Apple 1

Sotheby’s Auction house had announced a couple of weeks back that they would auction off an Apple 1 motherboard, cassette interface and its BASIC programming manual, originally set to fetch upwards of $180,000. However the original machine, made by Steve Jobs himself in 1979, was sold to one lucky phone bidder for an impressive US $374,500 (Rs 2,08,42,500).

According to Apple Insider, the computer is one of six known out of 50 that are likely still out there. Now that the fetching price is known we might see more come out in the open. Apart from the massive price fetched for that machine, a hand-written note from Steve Jobs during his time at Atari was also on auction, going up to a final price of US $27,500  (Rs. 15,28,450) even though it was only estimated to sell for less than half that price.

The iPad 3 Rumors starting to Pour in : Retina display & 2 GHZ Dual Core A6 Chipset

The iPad 3 Rumors are starting to our in and flaring over what is said to be the next iPad slated for a early 2012 release. Here is what the inter webs are discussing:

    Launch Date

The iPad 3 is supposedly set to be launched in around the end of January with sale beginning on 24th Feb 2012 (Steve Jobs’ Birthday)

    Processor

If Apple is launching a new iPad we can expect a spec bump, Rumors point to a dual core A6 chipset clocked at 2GHz with enhanced Graphics processing equivalent to gaming consoles.

    Display

Apple is also said to be working on a Enhanced retina display for the iPad 3 ( or simply a higher res display than the current version.).

    Camera

People complained a lot about poor cameras in the iPad 2 and Apple is said to be fixing that issue with the 5MP snapper from the iPhone 4 being installed in the iPad 3 along with FaceTime HD front camera.

    Design

Apple is said to be furthering the slim profile of the iPad 2 by making the iPad 3 even thinner. The form factor will continue to remain the same and the smart covers will still work.

What will actually happen at the launch of the iPad 3, if there is one, will only be known post the launch. But the rumors point in the general direction that any company would head in. The possibilities of these changes is quite high. The only thing that we are unsure of is the shipping date.

Apple Patent Hints at the end of Hard Keys – A new Future for Keyboards

Apple is known for its iPhones, iPod and Macs along with its many Patents and Lawsuits. A recently filed patent from Apple suggests that the company is looking at the possibility of eliminating keyboards all together in the future from its desktop and laptop products. The new keyboards will be a flat surface and will be compromised of various materials and mechanisms with metal, plastic and glass form factors.

The technology is based of multiple ideas that involve piezoelectric components, haptic feedback and acoustic pulse recognition,  the combination would allow the keyboard or flat key surface to receive an input via your finger. The flat surface design will have either a plastic or metal construction with perforations to help recognize the keys, a glass overlay to identify them with a display and finally all of this will be led backlit. Looks like Apple is finally taking a stab at the age old keyboard.
