  • Toshiba, SanDisk Announce the First 256GB Memory Chip for Next-Gen iPhones

Toshiba, SanDisk Announce the First 256GB Memory Chip for Next-Gen iPhones

Toshiba and SanDisk have unveiled the first 256Gb 48 layer BiCS 3D flash memory. How is this connected to Apple? Both these companies are the two major flash providers for Apple’s iPhone 6. With this announcement, reports suggest, that the iPhone 7 which is expected to launch next year, could come with this hardware.

This means that with these 32GB flash modules the iPhone 7 would be potentially, faster and more efficient than anything else in the market. Reports also say that the new chip is-built on a 15nm process technology and will have twice the capacity of the most compact memory available in the markets today.

This new product can be used in smartphones, tablets, memory vards, SSDs etc. It is based on the 3D Bit Cost Scaling technology which enhances the write or erase reliability and can boost write speeds as compared to a 2D memory. It is also said to be able to store 3 bits of data per transistor.

However, neither Toshiba nor Apple have confirmed anything. The hardware company has not mentioned any potential clients for this product, although reports assume that Apple might stick to its usual suppliers and hence incorporate the new type of 3D NAND flash in their new device next year.

Toshiba has said that they will be sampling the new flash memory in September and announced that they are preparing for mass production of the device. This collaboration between SanDisk and Toshiba is said to be completed next year.

First Look at Toshiba’s First Working Camera Modules for Project Ara

Project Ara is an on-going endeavor by Google to create a modular smartphone for which the user can switch critical components in and out, thus allowing them to build the perfect phone for their specific needs. It seems that one of the third parties working on the modules is Toshiba, which is contributing towards its progress in creating the first swappable camera units.

    projectaracamera

Toshiba has created one prototype with a 2MP camera which is designed to be placed in front of the camera and 5MP and 13MP camera modules, which is to be placed as the primary camera. All the cameras are within a swappable module, which would allow the user to swap cameras according to their desired shot, or simply purchasing a better camera piece and replacing the existing one.

    toshibamodules

Toshiba had revealed some of the initial designs at the Modular Phones Forum. As of now, the company is now developing three different modules: a 2MP front camera and 5MP/13MP primary camera.

The video below shows Toshiba’s new 5MP prototype camera module working and capturing images.

  • Toshiba Launches World’s Fastest Compact Flash Card

Toshiba Launches World’s Fastest Compact Flash Card

Compact Flash cards have been the fastest type of memory cards ever since they first came out, and they aren’t even the oldest sort. Toshiba turned things all the way up to 11 with the Exceria Pro though.

Having a product that can be called world’s best, fastest, or any other epithet is something that IT companies, and any other corporations for that matter, always like.

Toshiba, known more for its NAND flash memory than its consumer compact flash memory cards, claims to have the world’s highest bandwidth compact flash card with its Exceria Pro models.

    Toshiba

The cards come in the now-standard 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, but the real gems are their read and write speeds. The cards reach a write speed of 150MB/s, and a read speed of 160MB/s. The speeds are so fast, that the cards allow the capture of 1080p video without a dropped frame and they are capable of handling 4K as well. The firm said that its Exceria Pro cards use its own NAND flash chips and its own firmware.

Toshiba is likely to see interest for its latest cards from those that use digital SLR cameras where compact flash memory is still the primary storage medium, and higher write bandwidths will allow longer continuous image capture before the camera’s buffer is filled.

Toshiba’s new memory cards are compatible with the CompactFlash Association (CFA) standard CompactFlash Specification Revision 6.1.

They also support the UDMA7 high speed interface, which is the primary reason for its speed.

The air has been cleared over the tablet to Android 4 controversy and it seems all but most Honeycomb tablets will be updated to the latest build of Android from their companies. The only thing that lies in the middle is the timeline, and since we all know that companies like to take their own sweet time ironing out the kinks, we would say it should be a while.

  • Toshiba Unveils a New CMOS Sensor

Toshiba Unveils a New CMOS Sensor

Toshiba has released a new CMOS image sensor with a 0.25 inch optical format. This new sensor has the smallest pixel size to date of 1.12 micrometers and delivers cutting edge peformance with its built in back-side illumination technology.

The sensor has been designed to accomodate tight form factors and still capture high definition images. Due to this feature, the company expects it to be embedded into mobile devices such as cameras, smartphones, tablets and even laptops in the near future. The 8.08 MP sensor can capture video at 60 frames per second at both 720p and 1080p resolutions.

Andrew Burt, vice president, Analog and Imaging Business Unit, System LSI Group, TAEC had this to say,

As smartphones and other portable digital devices move to smaller form factors, image sensors must also shrink in size. This presents imaging subsystem designers with a challenge: how do you get smaller and smaller image sensors to support higher image resolutions when miniaturization can cause a fall off in performance? Our BSI technology overcomes this problem by deploying the lens on the rear of the sensor, on its silicon substrate, not on the front, where wiring limits light absorption. This positioning boosts light sensitivity and absorption, and allows Toshiba to make finer quality image pixels in smaller-sized CMOS image sensors. This increased sensitivity also makes our BSI CMOS image sensors more suitable for video applications, such as video capture or video chat.
