    iPhone 5S & 5C Show up in a Video

iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, the rumored next-generation iPhone and the so called ‘cheaper iPhone’ respectively, are supposed to be unveiled on September 10. As the date approaches closer, we’re seeing details leak out often, but this time its not an image, or group of iPhones, But a video showing the possible golden iPhone 5S and the cheaper version of the iPhone famous as the iPhone 5C.

    iPhone 5S

Looking at the video, there’s no way to tell if the parts shown in this video are real, but they line up with previous leaked photos.

    [youtube id=”m-Ib6NME-DE” width=”100%” height=”300px”]

The video clearly shows both the alleged upcoming iPhones together. The 5S might get launched with a faster processor as per the rumors but there is not much information about the ‘5C’ except it being made with a polycarbonate shell. We will have to wait and see if Apple will really launch two phones, specially a cheaper one ? This question will remain unanswered till September 10 irrespective of any new leaked images that might come up.

  • How To Keep Your Facebook Account Safe

How To Keep Your Facebook Account Safe

Facebook is part of our daily routine, it is very important for us to take care of its security so that it does not harms us in some or the other way. Here are some steps you may want to follow to make sure that you have your Facebook account secured:

    Privacy settings:

Set your privacy setting to ‘Friends only’, by doing this, you will be able to have control who has access to your information and pictures. For certain pictures, you can also select certain friends that you do or do not want them to see. this is known as “Custom” sharing.

    Always monitor pictures:

Always monitor pictures that other people put of you and tag you on. You can see the tagged pictures of you by going to your profile, click on “Photos”- you should see “Photos of You” and the number of tagged pictures. Click on that, and look through the pictures. You can un-tag any photo of you, but people still have the ability to see it. Click “Report/Remove Tag” under the “Options” on the bottom of the picture. Also if you think that the particular picture could put you in a compromising situation, consult whoever put it up and ask him or her to remove it immediately. If they are your so called friends they should acknowledge your request.

    Personal Information:

Avoid putting your phone number, mailing address, or your home address in your profile. People often use words such as pet’s names or numbers as passwords, so it is not recommended to publish them on-line.

    Change your password:

Don’t make your password something obvious such as your birthday or mother’s maiden name. Try to have at least one capital letter, one lowercase letter, two numbers, and a symbol. The longer and more complicated the password, the safer you are from getting your account hacked. Always remember to log out after you’re finished with Facebook, especially on a shared computer.

    Connecting Facebook with untrusted websites:

The purpose of Facebook is to connect you with people you know and not adding everyone randomly. Making your profile public means you’re sharing your information with everyone, even though you don’t know them, a risk that you would not want to take. Never link Facebook with any untrusted websites.

    Add someone you know:

Don’t friend anyone out of your state/country unless you know them pretty well. Only friend people you know. Make sure they are the correct person by looking through their pictures. If they are not familiar, then remove them as a friend by getting to your friend list. Report/Block anyone that seems to threaten or harass you.

These are some steps that will help you to update and secure your much loved Facebook account. If we missed any please let us know below!

Free Messaging Apps Are Unsafe, Claims Hackers

The free text messaging app on your phone can be used to occupy your personal information. Hackers and cyber security professionals have claimed that internet companies can access a mobile user’s chat logs and phone data, which includes location, contacts, mail and much more, through some of the free texting apps.

As per TOI, a team of young hackers demonstrated on Sunday how text messages sent through a Chinese free texting app can be decrypted. They said foreign governments could also be using this method to access data for surveillance or spying.

Participants at The Hackers Conference in Delhi on Sunday said the government wasn’t utilizing the potential of hackers despite its websites increasingly coming under attack.

However, hackers are increasingly becoming part of the IT industry and contributing as security experts. “Hackers are paid around Rs 1 lakh per month by social networking sites, search engines and software companies, he said, adding that some of these hackers are just teenagers, says Kishlay who further said:

“Hacking is like an art which needs skill to master. It is also like science, extremely logical. Today private companies use ethical hackers to make themselves secure. We know of companies that pay hackers more than they spend on developing software,” said Kishlay Bharadwaj, 24, a freelance security analyst and organizing member of the conference.

White hat hackers are for the good, no matter if they work for any company or for safeguarding the nation from cyber threats.

  • Yahoo! Buys An Image Recognition Firm ‘IQ Engines’ To Improve Flickr

Yahoo! Buys An Image Recognition Firm ‘IQ Engines’ To Improve Flickr

Yahoo has Acquired IQ Engines, a company that develops image recognition software capable of categorizing pictures based on the people and objects featured in them. IQ Engines first made headlines back in 2010 when it snapped up a $1 million in funding for crafting an API that would allow its customers to provide a visual search engine of all sorts that could automatically categorize images on the go.

    IQ Engines
IQ Engines is supposed to be rolled into Yahoo’s Flickr team, to help and improve the widely used photo services search feature. It is the latest acquisition for Yahoo and some of the others are Tumblr, Xobni, Rockmelt, and Summly. Flickr is one of the best online resources available for photographers of all interests, but navigating through its massive photo catalog is not much user friendly. Yahoo’s purchase of IQ Engines might change that. According to the image recognition startup’s website, IQ will be applying its skills to improving photo organization and search functionality to the online photo repository. Hopefully new features will reflect in Flickr’s upcoming change log.

Xbox One claims a new generation of gaming and entertainment and to push the boundaries of realism.  With Xbox One, you can quickly jump from TV to movies to music to a game. Just with the sound of your voice says Microsoft.

Xbox One is said to be the perfect balance of power and performance. In addition to Xbox One’s architecture, the combination of its CPU, GPU and ESRAM is made to give users the best experience like having a supercomputer in your living room claims the company.

    XBox-One-Controller-Front-Large

There’s been 50 games announced for the console so far, 23 of which will be available at launch. The other ones includes titles like Watch Dogs, Dead Rising 3, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Killer Instinct and Ryse: Son of Rome.

Few more include games from Electronic Arts(EA), 2014 editions of Madden, NBA Live and FIFA. For starters, EA has confirmed that you’ll be able to carry over a season from current-generation consoles to next-generation and Microsoft has announced that all consoles pre-ordered in Europe will include a free copy of the game.

Xbox One consoles require the Kinect motion controller to be plugged in at all times. However, that’s not deterring the company’s plans to keep the Kinect a mandatory addition to any future console bundles.

“Xbox One is Kinect. They are not separate systems. An Xbox One has chips, it has memory, it has Blu-ray, it has Kinect, it has a controller. These are all part of the platform ecosystem,” Phil Harrison, a Microsoft corporate vice president said in response to a question on whether or not the Xbox One will ever be sold without the Kinect.

When Facebook denied: Hacker Khalil Gets over $12k From Online Donors

Khalil the hacker who broke into Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Timeline to expose a security lapse will be awarded nearly $12,058(increasing amount) from a campaign started on GoFundMe. The campaign was started by  Beyond Trust Chief Technology Officer Marc Maiffret, who is doing his best to make sure Shreateh doesn’t walk away from this experience empty-handed.

The campaign has raised $12,058 for Khalil Shreateh, of Palestine, who claims he was forced to hack into Zuckerberg’s page to bring attention to the security vulnerability because Facebook had ignored his earlier warnings.

The bug that Khalil found allowed him to post on the Timelines of people who weren’t his Facebook friends.

Khalil Shreateh found a vulnerability in Facebook.com and, due to miscommunication, was not awarded a bounty for his work,’ Maiffret wrote on the GoFundMe campaign page. ‘Let us all send a message to security researchers across the world and say that we appreciate the efforts they make for the good of everyone.’

    Facebook

According to the ‘Bug Bounty’ program that pays out at least $500 to hackers who bring software bugs to the company’s attention. But the company said Khalil would not qualify for a reward because he tested the bug against another user.

Joe Sullivan, Facebook’s Chief Security Officer, explained the company’s decision in a post online.

We will not change our practice of refusing to pay rewards to researchers who have tested vulnerabilities against real users,’ he wrote. ‘It is never acceptable to compromise the security or privacy of other people. In this case, the researcher could have sent a more detailed report (like the video he later published), and he could have used one of our test accounts to confirm the bug.’

But instead of thanking him and fixing the issue, Facebook said it wasn’t a bug.

‘My name is Khalil Shreateh. I finished school with B.A degree in Information Systems . I would like to report a bug in your main site (www.facebook.com) which i discovered it…The bug allow Facebook users to share links to other facebook users , I tested it on Sarah.Goodin wall and I got success post.’

“I hope this has raised awareness of the importance of independent researchers,” Maiffret said on the Indiegogo page. “I equally hope it has reminded other researchers that while working with technology companies can sometimes be frustrating, we can never forget the greater goal; to help the Internet community at large, just as that community has helped donate over ten thousand dollars to Khalil within a day.”

A Six Inch Windows Phone ‘Nokia Bandit’ Coming Soon

Nokia is said to be planning a big-screen Windows Phone for release later this year. As per The Verge, sources familiar with Nokia’s plans have revealed that the company is currently testing a 6-inch device with the latest version of Windows Phone. The device is Code named ‘Nokia Bandit’ and is said to include a 1080p display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor. If this information is true this device will be the first one to get a 1080p display on a Windows based phone.

The source further says that the Bandit will ship with a rear camera that is at least 20-megapixels, and with a  slight hump at the rear of the device to accommodate the camera. Keeping the device thin and lightweight is said to be a priority and it will be built with a polycarbonate body. Microsoft is currently improving Windows Phone to support devices like the Bandit, with extra changes for 1080p displays, and an additional column of Live Tiles on the Start screen. The latest Windows Phone update includes rotation lock, a Driving Mode option, and some minor UI changes.

  • Google Starts A ‘Vulnerability Rewards Program’

Google Starts A ‘Vulnerability Rewards Program’

The Vulnerability Rewards Program is created to help and reward the contributions of security researchers who invest their time and effort in helping Google to make Chromium more secure. Through this program Google is to provide monetary awards and public recognition for vulnerabilities responsibly disclosed to the Chromium project.

    The eligible bugs can be:

    • An uncontrolled buffer overflow in the browser process, especially if a malicious web site can directly control the contents of the buffer.

    • Most memory safety issues in the browser process, unless the possibility of arbitrary code execution can be ruled out.

    • A bug that allows circumvention of the same-origin policy.

    • A bug that allows arbitrary code execution within the confines of the sandbox.

    • Bugs that interfere with browser security features. E.g. A bug that disrupts the location bar and lock icon. (Note that the status bubble is not a security indicator.)

    • Bug that allows an attacker to enumerate recently visited URLs.

    • Bugs that are not harmful independently, but can be combined with other bugs to cause harm.  For example, ignoring a “do not cache” directive might not itself be harmful but might facilitate other attacks.

    • Any bug that might be High Severity, but requires unusual user action (such as terminating a tab’s process while in full-screen mode).

    • A bug that allows an attacker to hang the browser.  (Note that tab hangs are not security issues if they can be resolved simply by closing the tab.)

Reward for eligible bugs is $500, but the typical payout is usually at least $1000 as per Google. If the rewards panel finds the bug particularly severe, the value can be as much as $3133.70. Or if the rewards panel finds a report really impressive, the value can be as much as $10,000 or even beyond says Google.

Can you find an eligible bug ? Find it to win some $$$, just to remind you guys 1 USD is about 63.10 INR.
