  • Samsung Pay to Launch in Other Countries by Early 2016

Samsung Pay to Launch in Other Countries by Early 2016

There have been a couple of smartphone manufacturers in the news today regarding mobile payment services. Earlier today we reported that LG is working a mobile payment platform, and now Samsung is looking to introduce Samsung Pay in some other countries as well.

Samsung Pay uses NFC technology and Magnetic Secure Transmissions (MST). Since MST technology is used by every retailer that swipes a credit card, Samsung Pay can be used at more retailers than Apple Pay and Android Pay.

So far, Samsung Pay has been launched in Korea and the U.S. In Korea, Samsung Pay has seen $30 million in transactions, which is reason enough for the company to expand. Rumour has it that Samsung is now eyeing China, Spain and the U.K during the first quarter of 2016.

If Samsung Pay launches successfully in these countries as well, we could see further expansion plans by the Korean giant. As of now, India is still not on Samsung’s list, but never say never.

A customer holds an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus after the phones went on sale at the Fifth Avenue Apple store in Manhattan, New York

These figures were bound show up. Apple had a great year since the launch of the iPhone 6. Along with the sales of the iPhone 6, Apple also introduced a number of offers like buyback and installments schemes to the excitement of many fans. The offers have only grown more and more since. In fact, in October, Apple also launched some buyback schemes for the latest iPhone 6s series.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were launched to the dismay of many for its ridiculously high price tag. Apple saw the problem and was quick to offer buyback schemes to upgraders with up to Rs 34,000 off in exchange for an older model.

Apple has also tied-up with Croma and will soon open up Apple Stores in India, which is surely going to help with the figures all the more.

  • HTC Launches the One M9s with Helio X10 CPU

HTC Launches the One M9s with Helio X10 CPU

HTC is slowly going the Samsung route by launching a number of devices in quick succession that can get quite confusing for consumers. Today, HTC launched the One M9s that looks pretty much the same as the One M9 apart from a few changes in the hardware department.

The One M9 sports a 5-inch FullHD LCD display, 2840 mAh battery; a MediTek Helio X10 chipset under the hood, 13MP front camera with OIS and a UltraPixel front camera. You’ll find 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage, which is expandable up to 2TB.

    HTC One M9s 01

Notable difference from the M9 is the MediaTek Helio X10 chipset that HTC has gone with instead of the Snapdragon 810 that gave the company quite a bit of trouble. HTC has also downgraded the camera from 20MP to 13MP.

Connectivity options include quad-band 2G/3G and LTE over a multitude of bands. There’s Bluetooth v4.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC and GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS and Beidou.

The HTC One M9s is available for pre-order in Taiwan for $390 shipping will begin on November 21. No word yet on when the device will be available

  • Apple to Release the iPhone 6c in Mid-2016

Apple to Release the iPhone 6c in Mid-2016

There have been a lot of rumours lately surrounding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 devices. While majority of the rumours suggest that Apple is working on two versions of the iPhone 7, other rumours also hint at a third device. However, this third device will not be part of the iPhone 7 series but will be a cheaper version of the iPhone 6. Like the iPhone 5c, Apple could come out with an iPhone 6c by mid-2016.

Kevin Wang from IHS has stated that Apple is working on a budget-oriented iPhone 6 handset. This handset will be a smaller version with a 4-inch display and will come with a plastic body similar to the 5c. This rumour also aligns with an earlier report from Ming-Chi Kuo, who has an excellent track record with predicting Apple’s product pipeline. Kuo predicted the 4-inch iPhone would launch in the first half of 2016.

    iphone-6c-concept-2

The scaled down version of the iPhone 6 will indeed come with a few missing features. As the device was pegged as a cheaper iPhone 7 variant rather than a 6, what’s for certain is that the 6c will not come with 3D Touch. This makes sense as Apple will still look to push sales of its main flagship devices next year. As usual, these rumours must be taken with a grain of salt. The image above of the iPhone 6c is a concept design released a couple of months ago by 3DFuture.

  • HTC One X9 With 5.5-Inch Display Gets Certified by TENAA

HTC One X9 With 5.5-Inch Display Gets Certified by TENAA

It has been rumoured for a while now that HTC is working on a new device called the One X9. Now the device has been spotted at a telecommunication certification agency,TENAA, revealing features and pictures of the device.

TENAA – the Chinese telecom authority website – has reportedly posted a document of the upcoming device containing images and a spec list. The image shows the One X9 flaunting a horizontally placed oval camera module on top not unlike the Huawei Nexus 6P. The only difference between the two is that the camera module does not protrude with the former while the Nexus 6P has a little bump.

    HTC-One-X9

What’s quite surprising is that this is the second device by HTC in the past month that shows strikingly similar design elements to already-existing phones. The HTC One A9 was criticised for blatantly ripping off iPhone’s design, and now the One X9 seems to be ‘borrowing’ from the Nexus 6P. If the images posted by TENAA are true, this will surely invite harsh criticism from the public.

Moving on to the specs, the One X9 will sport a 5.5-inch full HD (1920x1080p) display and run on the Android Lollipop OS powered by 2.2GHz Octa-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage (expandable up to 1TB). It will feature a 13MP camera on the rear and a 5MP front.

Nothing is known on the official launch of the device, but the fact that the One X9 has been listed on TENAA means that HTC will likely unveil the device soon. Follow this space for more.

Facebook Activates ‘Safety Check’ Feature Amid Paris Terror Attacks

Today, the world woke up to one of the worst terror attacks in recent times. The Paris massacre last night killed dozens of people and left many more severely injured. In times of such crisis one needs to stay connected to those closest to them, especially if they happen to be near the crisis zone, and Facebook lets you do that with its ‘Safety Check’ feature.

On Friday, Facebook activated its safety check feature during the Paris crisis to allow users to notify friends and family that they were safe through the site’s ‘Safety Check’ tool. Users began getting notifications telling them that their friends who were in Paris during the attacks were safe.

    Safety check

The ‘Safety Check’ feature was launched in 2014 and has been activated five times so far. This is the first time the feature has been used in a non-natural disaster setting. in the wake of the attacks, Facebook promptly activated the feature and also released a statement:

“We are shocked and saddened by the events unfolding in Paris. Communication is critical in these moments both for people there and for their friends and families anxious for news. People turn to Facebook to check on loved ones and get updates which is why we created Safety Check and why we have activated it today for people in Paris.”

Facebook hasn’t yet shared how many people were marked safe. According to its site, Facebook determines the location of a user by “looking at the city you have listed in your profile, your last location if you’ve opted in to the Nearby Friends product, and the city where you are using the internet.”

  • AT&T Reportedly Testing Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge

AT&T Reportedly Testing Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge

Popular and reliable phone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) tweeted last night that AT&T is already testing two new Samsung phones with model numbers SM-G930A and SM-G935A, which presumably refer to the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

It is already known that Samsung plans an early 2016 launch of its flagship devices. Earlier this month, rumours were afloat that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge on February 21, just before the start of MWC 2016.

Not much is revealed in the specs department yet. Rumours have been suggesting that the flagship could  sport a 12MP sensor provided by Sony, which will focus on better low-light images. Other details that have been going around suggest an Exynos 8 Octa 8890 processor, a 5.2-inch display on the Galaxy S7 and 5.8-inch dual-curved display on the S7 Edge. However, nothing is confirmed at the moment.

The fact that AT&T is already testing the models means the launch of the device will follow shortly after the unveiling in February. The devices will be widely available after the U.S launch and will be sold by all major carriers around the world.
