  • Samsung To Release 276 PPI Laptop Display Panel, Beats Chromebook Pixel And Retina MacBook

Samsung To Release 276 PPI Laptop Display Panel, Beats Chromebook Pixel And Retina MacBook

When Google released their Chromebook Pixel earlier this year, its pixel density topped anything on the market, including Apple’s Retina MacBook. That could be set to change however, as Samsung is working on a display that could best both those devices.

Samsung is preparing to showcase what could be the sharpest display to ever debut on a 13-inch notebook. At this year’s Display Week 2013, Samsung will flaunt a 13.3-inch notebook display with a 3200 x 1800 pixel resolution and 276 pixels per inch.

This beats Apple’s 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro by a decent margin, which comes with a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1600 and 227 ppi. It also outshines Google’s 2560 x 1700- resolution Chromebook Pixel, which comes with a 12-inch display packing 239 ppi.

    samsung

By utilizing a decreased number of driver circuits and increased LED BLU efficiency, the duo will also deliver up to 30% energy savings compared to the current generation of displays, said Samsung.

As Laptop Mag reports, Samsung will also show off a 10.1-inch 2560 x 1600 resolution touch screen for tablets and an 85-inch LCD panel for TVs that enables local-dimming control. This means that color will render more vividly on the 85-inch screen with higher contrast and “80 percent brightness uniformity.”

It certainly sounds enticing, especially when you consider the quality of the displays on both Retina MacBook Pro’s, and even the Chromebook Pixel. More competition in the laptop display space can only be good news in the long run.

These newest displays come on the heels of a recent announcement by Sharp, where they unveiled that they will begin producing IGZO panels with UltraHD resolutions for notebooks. It is not yet known if the panels will simply be displayed or will be included as part of actual products, but we should know more in the coming days.

  • Leaked : Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Photos And Details

Leaked : Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Photos And Details

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Active is expected to launch by the end of this month, so it comes as no surprise that leaks for the phone are starting to become more prevalent. Several photos of the Galaxy S4 Active were spilled by GSMArena on Monday and we can see that, unlike the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S4 Active will launch in a bright red color and offers a slightly different industrial design.

    Galaxy S4 Active

The phone will be water-proof and dust-proof which makes it Samsung’s answer to the Sony Xperia Z. The pictures also confirm the GT-i9295 model number, which has been previously associated with the Galaxy S4 Active.

    Galaxy S4 Active

As GSMArena reports, the specs of the Galaxy S4 Active are expected to be the same and the live pictures below confirm it – the device is running on a quad-core 1.9GHz processor with Adreno 320 GPU, which most definitely means a Snapdragon 600 chipset. The screen supposedly has the same size and resolution as the original Galaxy S4 – a 5.0-inch 1080p unit, though it’s unclear if it’s a Super AMOLED one or not. Strangely enough, the reported pixel density of the phone is 480ppi, so the display might actually be smaller.

    Galaxy S4 Active

Rumours also suggest the possibility of other Galaxy S4 variants, including both a Mini and a Mega version. Both will have differing screen sizes from the current stock Galaxy S4.

Also confirmed last week was the Galaxy S4 Google Edition, a vanilla Android packing version of Samsung’s flagship phone available for those who like their Android experience without any tweaks.

  • NASA Scientist In China Accused Of Being A Spy After Downloading Porn

NASA Scientist In China Accused Of Being A Spy After Downloading Porn

Bo Jiang, a Chinese research scientist who worked at a NASA facility and was suspected of stealing secrets, is expected to plead guilty today–not for espionage, but for downloading porn on his work computer.

Jiang was nailed down in suspicion of trying to spy on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration but was instead found guilty of downloading porn movies on his NASA laptop.

According to court documents, Jiang was previously characterized as a “low risk” hire at NASA, despite his status as a foreign national, because his team was “not working on classified material or any development that is critical to the success of a current mission.”

But even if Jiang didn’t have access to any such information, there are still directives barring NASA laptops “from being used for official business on international trips without prior written permission of the Chief Information Officer for NASA’s Langley Research Center.”

Jiang took his laptop and an external hard drive along on two trips to China without written permission, according to court documents, which also said that while Jiang was in China, he corresponded with colleagues about work-related matters.

His lawyers said he was doing “generic work” and did not have access to sensitive information. But he did have something else that could earn him a criminal record: Pirated movies and porn on his old NASA-issued laptop.

The charge for making a false statement “has been resolved,” a prosecutor said, without providing details. Nasa had previously said it took “any allegation of a security violation very seriously”.

  • NASA Smartphone Satellites Return Images Of The Earth

NASA Smartphone Satellites Return Images Of The Earth

The trio of Android smartphones NASA blasted into orbit recently have ended their journey by burning up in the atmosphere, but not before snapping shots of Earth — and the pictures don’t look too bad.

The “PhoneSats” were a NASA experiment to develop super-cheap satellites and to determine whether a consumer-grade smartphone can be used as the main flight avionics of a capable satellite, NASA said.

The agency launched a rocket containing three of its PhoneSats, cubical satellites four inches on a side with that old classic the Nexus One tucked within. They have GPS, motion sensors, and a camera built-in. So, the project cost less than $10,000 using off-the-shelf technology. A custom-built system might have cost upwards of a million dollars. The module was equipped with extra lithium-ion batteries. Data, along with photos from the smartphone camera, are still being analyzed.

    nasa

The photos above come straight from the phones’ five-megapixel cameras themselves. That part was successful, though the pictures aren’t exactly detailed. Between the transmission artifacting and the smartphone grade cameras it gets a little messy.

A major concern was whether smartphones could withstand space temperatures. “On Earth here, there’s not many situations where your phone will reach to 40, 50 degrees Celsius, and so I think we were pushing the limit, but we were really interested in seeing if this would really work,” said Watson Attai with the PhoneSat engineering team.

The mission successfully ended Saturday, April 27, after predicted atmospheric drag caused the PhoneSats to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, NASA said.

  • Samsung’s Reply To Galaxy S4 Storage Accusations – Get A MicroSD Card

Samsung’s Reply To Galaxy S4 Storage Accusations – Get A MicroSD Card

Samsung Galaxy S4 buyers are getting much less storage than they pay for because the device is sold full of ‘bloatware’.

Bloatware includes apps and files that are added to handsets by the manufacturers and networks before they are sold to customers. Some of the preinstalled Samsung files are needed for its new features, such as eye tracking, air gestures and voice commands.

The 16GB version of Samsung’s newest flagship handset has only just over half of its listed memory available for owner use, according to CNet UK. The rest is taken up by the smartphone’s operating system and built-in apps.

“For the Galaxy S4 16GB model,” Samsung said in a statement, “approximately 6.85GB occupies [the] system part of internal memory, which is 1GB bigger than that of the Galaxy S3, in order to provide [a] high resolution display and more powerful features to our consumers.”

For users who aren’t satisfied with the 8.49 GB or so of free space left to them on the 16GB model, Samsung’s simple solution was:

To offer the ultimate mobile experience to our users, Samsung provides [a] microSD slot on Galaxy S4 for the extension of memory.
As AppleInsider notes, Galaxy S4 owners are able to expand their devices’ storage capacity via microSD up to an additional 64GB, bringing the potential total capacity of the device to 80GB — of which 73.15 would be available to the user. That additional space, though, couldn’t be used to store apps, as Google removed that capability with Android 4.0. Users would, though, be able to store downloaded books, music, movies, and other files.

Until Android improves on the ability to use built-in apps and services on the Micro SD card, it cannot be a replacement for 32GB or 64GB Android smartphones.

  • Rumour : LG And Google To Work Together Again For Next Nexus Phone

Rumour : LG And Google To Work Together Again For Next Nexus Phone

It looks like LG could be the latest device maker Google is contracting for the next flagship Nexus smartphone.

In an interview with the Korea Times, LG CEO Koo Bon-joon said he met up with Google boss Larry Page, where the two “discussed ways to improve their business partnership”.

    Nexus

Although the Korea Times concedes that native LG is lagging behind Samsung in the smartphone stakes, it later mentions that it is currently working with Google to make the next stock Android smartphone.

The Korean newspaper reported that LG has agreed to work on Google’s next Nexus device, relying on Google to boost its smartphone business. It said the smartphone is likely to launch as the Google Nexus 5, suggesting that it will have a 5in screen. It’s also likely to run Google’s upcoming Android 4.3 mobile operating system and feature a dirt cheap price tag.

About once per year, Google debuts a new smartphone that is meant to be a test bed for its Android operating system. The Nexus line of smartphones run a clean version of Android, meaning there are no manufacturer or carrier applications on board. The stock version of Android appears as Google wants it to on Nexus phones.

HTC made the first Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 1, and Samsung made the following two, the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus 4 is the first such device made by LG.

The original article doesn’t go into any details of what the new device phone might look like, and the earliest official indication we’re likely to get will be around Google I/O in a couple of weeks.

  • iOS 6.1.4 Update For iPhone 5 Released, Tweaks Speakerphone Profile

iOS 6.1.4 Update For iPhone 5 Released, Tweaks Speakerphone Profile

Apple on Thursday released iOS 6.1.4, an iPhone 5 only update, which delivers an “updated audio profile for speakerphone”.

Normally Apple incorporates security fixes into iOS updates, but at present there’s no word as to whether this update patches any vulnerabilities.

According to the change log, the 6.1.4 update brings ‘updated audio profile for loudspeaker’. The update is just 11.5MB in size, should only take a few minutes for the download process to fully complete, and currently available for download on the iPhone 5. If you have any other iOS device, don’t bother checking as it’s not available for them.

    ios 6

To update your iPhone 5 to the latest and greatest software, open Settings -> General -> Software Update and tap Download and Install when the update appears. You can also connect your phone to your computer and apply the update from iTunes, or download it manually from Apple’s support site.

The last update, 6.1.3, was released in March and fixed six flaws, four of which were found by the jailbreaking hacking crew evad3rs who used the flaws in a popular jailbreak for iOS 6.0 to 6.2.

Apple engineers are racing to finish iOS 7 to preview it the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference this June, according to Bloomberg.

iOS 7 should hit devices around October.

  • Google Patents Touch Sensitive Wristband For Smartwatch

Engadget has posted an image of a new watch-based device, patented by Google, which would perform many of the same functions.

While the drawing does not necessarily mean such a product is in the works for commercial release, it does hint at an intriguing new direction for the company’s move into wearable computing.

    smartwatch

The device itself is explicitly titled “Smart-watch with user interface features” by the USPTO patent so there’s no beating around the bush, but it’s the extra little bits we’re interested in.

For example, the watch, displayed in the accompanying illustration, also has two touchpads on either side of the display face. The patent says that you’ll be able to use these to “pinch, stretch and scroll on a platform with limited space available for user input.”

Given what we’ve previously heard about Google’s foray into the smartwatch domain, it sounded like Mountain View was separating its smartwatch and Google Glass development teams. But this new discovery makes a crossover seem more likely than ever.

This actually isn’t the first time we stumble upon a smartwatch patent application granted to Google. Last year, the company received a patent for such a device with augmented reality features.

It’s all pretty vague at the moment – understandably. But with Google I/O coming up you might just be able to get into the wearable tech game before too long.

  • Twitter Updates Android And iOS App, Expands Trends Locations

Twitter Updates Android And iOS App, Expands Trends Locations

Twitter for iPhone has been updated today with some minor feature improvements and better support for in-line Vine videos. The Android version has also been updated.

The company has been rolling out updates to its mobile apps in quick succession since the beginning of the year, after clamping down on what third-party developers can do with their own software. This latest version for iOS adds Trends data to over 160 different cities around the world, including many in India, and improves in-line Vine video playback.

Vine was acquired by Twitter and has since been systematically integrated into the Twitter experience, while continuing to be available in a standalone Vine app. After the acquisition, rival social network Facebook moved to limit the ability to cross-post Vine videos from Twitter to Facebook in apparent retaliation for Twitter’s attempt to do the same to Facebook acquisition Instagram.

Perhaps the most important addition to the app is one that will come in under the radar. When replying to a retweeted Tweet — for example, if you see a Tweet I retweeted of someone you don’t follow — it will include both the original person and retweeter within the response. Users can also invite others from within the app itself. That, and bug fixes and performance improvements, round out changes made in this new version.

As for the Android version, the company now uses an overflow menu (the three dotted lines) on compatible devices such as the HTC One to quickly switch between accounts and access the settings.

The folks at Twitter have also said that users will now be able to “enjoy a smoother experience” courtesy of some bug fixes and other improvements.

The new versions of the apps also added the ability to invite friends to join Twitter from within the app.

You can download the updated version of Twitter for Android and iOS now from their respective app stores.

  • Facebook To Delete Beheading Videos After Complaints

Facebook To Delete Beheading Videos After Complaints

Facebook has said it will delete videos of people being decapitated which had been spread on its site.

“We will remove instances of these videos that are reported to us while we evaluate our policy and approach to this type of content,” BBC News quotes Facebook.

The company had previously refused to remove several graphic clips, claiming people have a right to show the “world in which we live”.

The turn-about reportedly came after the California-based social network’s safety advisory board criticised the decision to leave the gruesome clips up at the website.

The warnings came after a one-minute long video was uploaded to the site last week showing a woman being beheaded by a masked man.

A voice heard on the footage suggests that it was filmed in Mexico. A second video clip showing the execution of two men has also been shared on the network after being posted last Wednesday. The victims say they are drug smugglers for a Mexican cartel before being attacked with a chainsaw and knife.

Celia Mellow, who started a petition calling for the clips to go, said she was ‘shocked’ by the images.

Meanwhile, Facebook last night announced first quarter revenues were up 38 per cent on 2012 to £938million. But shares were down 28p to £17.35.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: ‘We’ve made a lot of progress in the first few months of the year.

‘We have seen strong growth and engagement across our community and launched several exciting products.’

  • Facebook Reports First Quarter Results, Reveals 751 Million Monthly Active Mobile Users

Facebook Reports First Quarter Results, Reveals 751 Million Monthly Active Mobile Users

Facebook issued its first quarter results for the new year and made some pronouncements on the state of the mobile web and mobile advertising in general.

The company, which went public in 2012, now has 751 million monthly mobile users, up 54% from the same period last year. Considering that number comprises 68% of the company’s 1.11 billion total monthly active users, that is an astounding number.

    facebook

In a recent study conducted by Facebook, it found that 70 percent of all respondents use Facebook on their phone — 61 percent of which use the service every day. The company also found out that out of all the things that could be done on a smartphone, being on Facebook was the third most popular activity. 70 percent said that the Facebook app has become one of the most commonly used applications — right below checking email (78 percent) and Web browsing (73 percent).

More impressive is the rate of growth: that 54% uptick in mobile users is much higher than the 23% increase in total active monthly users.

So while it’s not safe to say that Facebook’s growth has completely stopped, it only grew some 4.75% since last quarter, while mobile users were up nearly 11% in the same period. Advertising revenues have also seen a slight bump from mobile users; 30% of Facebook’s advertising revenue now comes from mobile devices, up from 14% in Q3 and 23% in Q4.

Facebook’s mobile apps are among the most popular on its respective platforms, and with an increasing number of “sponsored posts” littering users’ news feeds, it’s only a matter of time before that 30% number increases to over 50%.

  • iOS 7 To Bring About “Dramatic Changes” To Email And Calender App

iOS 7 To Bring About “Dramatic Changes” To Email And Calender App

More details of iOS 7 continue to emerge ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2013 event in June. The latest information comes from Bloomberg, confirming that Apple has been overhauling the visual aesthetics of the user interface and even tweaking several core applications. Most notably, the publication hints towards redesigned email and calendar apps in iOS 7.

    ios 7

Bloomberg says that the design lead on the iOS 7 changes, Jony Ive, has been “exploring more dramatic changes to the e-mail and calendar tools.” It’s unclear if any major changes will make it into the final release, however. 9to5Mac recently stated that Apple would change the icons of its core apps, for instance, but didn’t mention any significant usability changes in those crucial apps.

Insiders say that Ive is now encouraging more communication between hardware and software teams, which previously – such as under former CEO Steve Jobs – would have been kept in isolation. That interaction also apparently includes bringing some members of the Mac team on to help the mobile software redesign, a temporary measure which has some history given Apple did the same thing in the run up to the original iOS release.

The worry is that drastic changes to applications and functions that have remained relatively stagnant since 2007 — things like email and calendars – could push back the release of iOS 7. While the revisions will move away from lifelike images and shift towards a “flatter” design, there will also be a greater emphasis on cleaning up software interactions. Ive and co. are also exploring new forms of gesture control for the next iteration of the iPhone and iPad operating system.

Apple is expected to announce iOS 7 at the world wide developer conference next month.

  • Microsoft Releases Facebook Beta For Windows Phone, Features High-Resolution Photos, Timeline And More

Microsoft Releases Facebook Beta For Windows Phone, Features High-Resolution Photos, Timeline And More

Facebook for Windows Phone, while maintaining a nice design, has always lagged behind its iOS and Android counterparts for features.

Microsoft is launching a new version of its Facebook app today in beta, bringing many of the most highly-requested features to Windows Phone users. Not only is the design a better compromise between the company’s existing mobile apps and the Windows Phone design guidelines, but it offers Timeline support, high-resolution images and post sharing.

    facebook

Instead of showing a tiny preview, the beta Facebook app now allows pics embedded inside a post to take up all the horizontal screen estate. Basically the shots can take advantage of large high-resolution displays.

The new app supports left- and right-side sliding bars, much like Android and iOS, and they open smoothly with a swipe from either side. Any page, including specific timelines, the messaging folder or even specific brand pages, can be pinned to the home screen for easy access, and the app still supports using images from albums as lock screen art. Toast notifications are said to be more reliable as well.

“Once you’ve put the beta app through its paces, we hope you’ll pass along bug reports, feature requests, and other feedback by going to Settings>About in the app”, Microsoft says. “You can also post a Store review. Your comments and suggestions will inform future releases”.

While the beta is not quite stable, and cannot be found by searching in the Windows Store, it will go a long way to alleviating some of that cross-platform envy Windows Phone users have been feeling lately. No word on whether Chat Heads are coming to Windows Phone any time soon, but having native Facebook Messenger support from the Messages app should suffice for now. The beta will be installed alongside your current Facebook app until it comes out of beta.

  • HTC M4 Press Shot Leaked, Just A Smaller HTC One?

HTC M4 Press Shot Leaked, Just A Smaller HTC One?

The HTC One is a beautiful phone – certainly the best that the company has produced. According to a post by the reputable Evleaks, HTC will be bringing the same quality of design to those looking seeking a mid-range device. This is the same strategy they did with the HTC One X and the One S.

    HTC M4

This picture above, which has leaked online before, is of an all-aluminum device that currently goes by the code name of the “HTC M4″ (before the HTC One launched it was known as the M7). It’s reminiscent of the flagship One, but the specs have been scaled down. The HTC M4 reportedly sports a 4.3-inch 720p display, dual-core processor, 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and an UltraPixel camera.

Rumour has it that the upcoming HTC M4 will land on shelves with a 1700 mAh, non-removable battery packed inside, and that it will be released with Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean loaded on top right from the start.

The HTC M4 is expected to be announced sometime “near the end of the second quarter.” If true, you can almost expect availability in India, but no official word.

PhoneArena, the site posting the picture, also says that the HTC M4 will have 4G LTE capabilities, but likens it to the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini.

For the time being, however, no official info on the smartphone has been provided, and it remains to be seen whether the rumored hardware specs mentioned above will indeed pan out. More details on the upcoming HTC M4 smartphone should emerge soon, so stay tuned to learn the news.
