Rumor: HP TouchPad Could Come as Early as April

HP is bound to ship the new device early, and the word on the street, in Taiwan is thet the Company will start selling its monster hardware tablet in the month of April along with the much awaited iPad 2.

The sources pointed out that HP internally is aiming to ship 45-48 million notebooks and tablet PCs combined in 2011. After deducting the volume of HP’s notebook shipment forecast, HP’s TouchPad series product shipments in 2011 are forecasted to be around 4-5 million units.

The HP Touchpad, is a serious threat to Apples upcoming revision to the iPad, especially because the Touchpad offer a far advanced version of the WebOS designed for tablets in Comparison to the iOS which still feels a bit immature.

  • Everything you need to know about the Nokia + Windows Phone alliance.

Everything you need to know about the Nokia + Windows Phone alliance.

So, Nokia has joined hands with Microsoft to develop future products, what does this mean? We have the details and will be shedding light on the insides and out of the alliance and what it does for us.

To start off, we expected Symbian to either be completely re-invented or be completely exterminated. Nokia choose the latter, they probably thought it was much easier than to invent an OS in a market that was way ahead of them. This alliance comes with the death of Symbian in a slow and steady manner. In the presentation created by Stephen Elop (ceo of Nokia) t it’s clear that Symbian which is claimed to be a “franchise” OS that Nokia will “harvest” and will be taken over by Windows Phone on Nokia devices just as soon as Nokia and Microsoft can complete the transition.

The transition as Nokia and Microsoft stated, would go on through 2011-2012, and by 2013 Nokia will be shipping only Windows Phone 7 or 8 or whatever version Microsoft throws out to the world. In simple words : Nokia will only ship Windows Phone devices 2013 onwards.

“Nokia expects 2011 and 2012 to be transition years, as the company invests to build the planned winning ecosystem with Microsoft. After the transition, Nokia targets longer-term: (1) Devices & Services net sales to grow faster than the market. (2) Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin to be 10% or more.”

Stephen Elop says that he expects Nokia to ramp up the transition this year and be ready to ship Windows Phone 7 devices in significant volume in 2012.

With the arrival of Windows Phone to Nokia devices, there are substantial changes that will go on in Nokia’s infrastructure. When Elop was asked by a concerned Finnish reporter, “What happens to Finland,” Stephen responded that a successful Nokia is good for Finland but there will be “substantial reductions in employment” in Finland and around the world. That does mean a lot of frustrated Nokia employees, and a lot of anxiety for them. This may also be a great blow to investors or stock holders, as this may ruin Nokia’s market value on the long run.

Nokia has also been on the Qt warpath for years after purchasing the developer framework from Trolltech back in January of 2008. While Qt will continue on as the development framework for Symbian and MeeGo,  Microsoft will give for free Windows Phone Developer Tools (Visual Studio 2010, Expression, Silverlight and the XNA Framework) to developers interested in the platform and exclusively developing for it. Qt will not be adapted for Windows Phone 7 APIs.

Whatever said and done, We personally believe, Nokia’s focus on hardware development will improve the outcome and toss Nokia back up on the anticipated phones / devices list. Also we believe Nokia will be launching a tablet later this year. A tablet that will run a mix of operating systems and an interesting hardware speck at a price that will remain unrivaled. There are only good things to see from Nokia now (or at-least we want them).

Elop also expressed the fact that, Nokia will be allowed to alter anything in the WP7 platform, including layouts and skinning. But, Elop also mentioned that Nokia likely won’t make extensive use of this freedom to tailor Microsoft’s OS. This is a major shift for Microsoft, who forbade HTC from skinning Windows Phone 7 with Sense, the proprietary skin from HTC.

Read the Q&A below from the post announcement session.

    • No specific announcement for when we’ll see the first Nokia Windows Phone. Ballmer mentioned that the engineering teams have spent a lot of time together already.
    • Elop confirmed that Nokiawill not be moving to Silicon Valley or anywhere else.
    • Ballmer said that the partnership is “not exclusive” but some things that Microsoft is doing with Nokia are “unique” allowing Nokia to differentiate itself in the market. Elop added that it’s important for the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem to thrive, which means that multiple vendors must succeed.
    • Elop didn’t believe that Nokia could create a new ecosystem around MeeGo fast enough.
    • Nokia will “substantially reduce” R&D expenditures while increasing R&D productivity moving forward.
    • Nokia did consider adopting Android but decided that it “would have difficulty differentiating within that ecosystem” and the “commoditization risk was very high — prices, profits, everything being pushed down, value being moved out to Google which was concerning to us.” Microsoft presented the best option for Nokia to resume the fight in the high end smarpthone segment.
    • Elop clarified that MeeGo will ship this year but “not as part of another broad smarpthone platform strategy, but as an opportunity to learn.” Something that sounds very similar to position Nokia took with its so-called “experimental” Maemo-based N900 last year. After the first (and apparently, only) MeeGo device ships this year, the MeeGo team will then “change their focus into an exploration of future platforms, future devices, future user experiences.” Trying to determine the “next disruption” in smartphones.
    • Responding to “hope for a broad MeeGo-based ecosystem,” Elop said that Nokia simply wasn’t moving fast enough to effectively win and compete against Apple and Google. Windows Phone makes it a “three-horse race,” something that Elop says is pleasing to the carriers he’s been speaking with.
    • Nokia has different options for its tablet strategy including using something from Microsoft or something that Nokia has developed internally.

These could also just be newer versions of spares for the existing lineup.

iPhone also getting Multitasking gestures and MobileMe Photo Streams

No matter how much apple may deny that it will disallow multitasking gestures in their final release software, they are starting to show up in various places including the iPhone settings panel.

The same problem we spoke about earlier, bothers us, using “four or five fingers” sounds pretty unreasonable for a 3.5-inch display.

9to5 Mac seems to have unearthed traces in the iOS 4.3 beta of a new feature called “Photo Streams” that seems to be a way to share continuous streams of photos with friends you approve, presumably through MobileMe.

Although Apple charges $99 for the mobileme service, which seems pretty unwanted. But, then again a mobileme refresh is also due this year

  • iOS 4.3 beta 2 released : iPad 2 to have a proximity sensor ?

    iOS 4.3 beta 2 released : iPad 2 to have a proximity sensor ?

A the picture above shows, the iOS 4.3 Beta 2 was released. Folks digging around in the developer files found that the iPad 2 will have a proximity sensor which might lock and unlock the device when its put in , or removed (respectively) from the cover.

This refuels the no home button rumors we heard about. Please Apple, don’t remove that home button.

A slight sigh of relief is shown by the fact that apple claims that multitasking functions are a test and will not be available in the final build of iOS 4.3 . This would definitely mean that the Home button still exists. It does, it doesn’t , we wont know until it’s finally released.

  • The Apple iPad 2 – What we know So Far

The Apple iPad 2 – What we know So Far

Apple has its devices on a yearly refresh, every year around the same time, you get an upgraded version of the iPhone, the iPod, Macbooks etc. Just like that the iPad will also see a refresh. We started hearing rumors of iPad’s redesigned structure and obvious design changes in November 2010.

Now the iPad, was announced in the last week of Jan 2010, we can expect a similar time frame for a refresh of the Tablet. Something has to be new and the Rumor mill has been running haywire over it.

Here are a collection of images over the past month and our thoughts on what the new iPad may be like.

    New Structure

Images like the one above are renders of the carbon fibre patent that Apple had filed on May 18, 2009. This incorporates a liquid metal structure with a carbon fibre back. This would not only make the iPad extremely nice looking, But, also give it a lighter yet solid construction, immensely improving the antenna.

The likes of this happening are however, very- very low. We still have our hopes up.

    Cases

The second wave of iPad 2 rumors came with iPad 2 cases. These cases started showing up at manufacturers across the china market, showing cutouts for the back camera and an new speaker cutout.

This shows us that two things that might come are the Camera on the back and a improved speaker on the next gen iPad. We feel there is a very high chance of this happening.

    Facetime and Retina Display

Since Apple has been adding front cameras and retina displays to all its products in 2010, it wouldn’t be false to guess that the iPad 2 will have at least a front facing camera and a higher res display, if not a retina display. The new iOS 4.3 beta revealed some interesting information on the next release. A bunch of people snooping around the new files found wallpapers for the iPad that have the resolution . – 1536 x 800px compared to the existing 768 x 400  px that is approximately 4x the resolution (2x both ways).

We also believe, looking at Apple’s trend that the new iPad will definitely have a front facing camera and a Higher resolution display.

Gizmodo posted a good sketch of what the iPad 2 may look like, including resolution enhancement.

Engadget got hold of a dummy of the iPad 2 during CES at one of the case manufacturers booths. this showed a new design- with a flat back and a potentially larger capacity – 128 GB to be precise. This would be just brilliant for the iPad

    New Rumors

After a series of breakouts, a whole bunch of new information has come into light. There is news of a new A5 chip, this will be used in the new iPhone this year and apparently the new iPad as-well. Whats the A5 chip? well the heart of the A5 is the multi-core ARM Cortex A9. Which will also be the heart of Nvidia Tegra processors that will be in the series of Android devices slated for this year, along with the Ti-omap processor in the Blackberry Playbook.

AppleInsider claims that Apple is moving to dual-core SGX543 graphics, up from the A4’s single SGX535 GPU. This would enable it to process graphics at 4x times the capability – and the 4x resolution included. We can also expect 1080P hHD video output, and an improved experience along with higher ram and overall enhancement of hardware. But, hey that what we want anyway.

Some more interesting pictures of cases have also shown up. this ones have to new cut-out – claimed possibly for Sd-card slot and a display out. We are highly skeptical that Apple may add a memory card slot to increase memory size, may only act as a camera card reader, But, nonetheless the SD CARD slot would be a great addon. The Video out port may be a possibility, But, then again Apple can use the dock connector for that and dont really need a dedicated video out port, Unless its HDMI.

So here is a a Final List of features that may or may not come to the iPad

    • Facetime Camera – High Possibility
    • Rear Camera – High Possibility
    • New Liquid Metal design + carbon fibre – Unlikely
    • 4x Graphics – Possible
    • More Ram – High Possibility (and much needed)
    • New A5 Chip – High Possibility
    • Sd Card Slot- Unlikely
    • Mini Display Port – Unlikely
    • Larger Capacity 128 gb – Possible
    • Retina Display – High Res Display is more likely
    • 4G – No rumors on that – our guess – Not happening
