Apple has quietly launched a special edition of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus to mark 10 years of Apple’s association with (PRODUCT)RED line. The (PRODUCT)RED series is designed to contribute towards research for a cure for Aids.
Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products, from the original iPod nano (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition all the way to today’s lineup of Beats products and accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest (PRODUCT)RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED), and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands. – said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
The red color iPhones don’t add any new feature apart from the spicy new color which is sure to attract some buyers. Apple is the world’s largest corporate donor to the Global Fund, contributing more than $130 million as part of its partnership with (RED)
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition will be available only in 128GB and 256GB models starting at US $ 749 in the US and in India at MRP INR 82,000 from Apple Authorised Resellers.
Both special edition models are available worldwide beginning Friday, March 24, and start shipping to customers by the end of March.
The Apple iPhone SE also sees a storage upgrade, iPhone SE, will be available beginning Friday, March 24, in 32GB and 128GB models replacing the existing 16GB and 64GB iPhone SE at the same price.
Apple has also launched, new colours of Apple-designed iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus silicone cases in azure, camellia and pebble, and leather cases in taupe, sapphire and berry.
Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus have received a significant Rs. 10,000 price cut on all its variants and all colours. The iPhone 7 which was originally selling for Rs. 60,000 for the 32GB variant is now available for Rs. 49999 for the same variant and the price changes apply for all variants all the way up to the 128 GB iPhone 7 plus which originally sells for Rs. 82000 but is now available for Rs. 71999. This also includes the Jet Black colour which was on high demand at the time of the launch of the iPhone 7. The deal however does not include the iPhone 7 Plus at 256 GB which still remains pricey at Rs. 92000.
This news comes in wake of ever growing rumours of Apple’s next iPhone which, as a tenth anniversary upgrade, is expected to have some radical changes to design and technology. iPhone’s have usually never received price cuts in India, however, since this trend started in 2016, it has helped Apple move huge number of handsets and achieve record high sales for a phone segment which is now leads. This may possibly be the best time to grab an iPhone 7 and 7 Plus with the next upgrade a good 6 months away, your shiny ( or matte) iPhone can be bought for a good discount. The deal also appears to be a limited time offer.
New leaked design renders from KGI securities show that the iPhone 8/ iPhone X, which will possibly be the next iPhone from Apple, and also the 10th anniversary iPhone from the company, will have a larger screen in the same form factor.
The iPhone 7 has a 4.7 inch display with an IPS LCD panel along with the home button below the display. The iPhone 8 however will feature a 5.15 inch OLED panel according to the information in the image and will hide the home button behind a bar of fiction keys, much like the touch bar on the latest MacBook.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo states that the real size of the display will be around 5.8 inches however the display area will be only 5.15 inches while retaining the iPhone 7 form factor. The next iPhone much like previous leaks suggest will hide the home button and fingerprint scanner in all entirety being the OLED panel allowing for a larger appearing display.
The reports also mention Apple may also completely do away with touch ID for an alternative form of verification like facial or iris recognition, which was seen on the Galaxy Note 7 ( oh, the Galaxy Note 7, how you are missed !) . It seems unlikely that apple will kill possibly the most used thing on iPhones, i.e the touch ID.
However, this will not be the only iPhone launched in 2017, but, one of the 3 phones that launch this year. The other two will be identical in design and screen dimensions like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus, possibly with improved specifications.
The news is official, Apple will start to manufacture iPhones in their new Bangalore plant early April. The Taiwanese company Wistron Corp. will be doing the on ground assembly for Apple in Karnataka. The iPhones manufactured in India will be meant for the Indian market only and will not be exported at the time.
Apple in terms of manufacture has demanded a 15 year tax holiday from the government to start the manufacturing process, which is still being negotiated.
Apple will soon after launch Apple owned and operated Apple Stores in several major metropolitan cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Ahmadabad. Apple Stores will bring about reforms in Apple Care services being offered in India which suffer due to poor operation standards of Apple Resellers.
It is safe to say that Apple’s next iPhone, which is also the 10th Anniversary iPhone will be assembled right here in India for the Indian market. Whether this will affect pricing and quality standards is yet unknown.
Apple inc. will start manufacturing iPhones in Bangalore (Bengaluru) starting April of 2017 to expedite their promise of Make in India and to ensure their ability to open self owned and maintained stores in India. Apple earlier had planned to open their own flagship stores in several cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, but due to the government compliance of requiring manufacturing in India, the process was delayed. Tim Cook’s recent visit to India was a positive sign on the efforts of the Cupertino based tech giant, to fully initiate and integrate it’s services in the Indian market.
The manufacture of iPhones will considerably bring down costs of duties and taxes and will allow Apple to sell at competitive prices and at par with US price which is usually Rs. 10,000-15,000 cheaper. Apple will also bring their full suite of in store experiences, like training and Genius bars, to improve service and warranty standards in India, which have usually had mixed reviews.
Apple is selling large volumes of phones in India, and iPhone sales hit 2.5 million from Oct 2015-September 2016 raking in 9,997 Crore in revenue for the tech company here in India.
Nokia may not be officially back, but, it has made sure you take notice, as the company files a suit over several patent infringements against Apple inc. over technologies that Apple’s been using in heir devices.
The suit was filed in Regional Courts in Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich in Germany and the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
Through our sustained investment in research and development, Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices, including Apple products,” said Ilkka Rahnasto, Nokia’s head of Patent Business
The suit covers 32 patents for a range of technologies that include things like the display and user interface to chipsets and video encoding for video captured.
According to Apple, the patents belong to PAEs, which include Acacia Research and Conversant Property Management. They are “conspiring with Nokia in a scheme to diffuse and abuse and, as the PAEs and Nokia fully intended, monetise those false promises by extracting exorbitant non-FRAND royalties in way Nokia could not.” Apple claims that this is “anticompetitive and abusive” to the Apple inc and other technology firms.
Apple has a long history of lawsuits with the largest one with Samsung, and several others where the company has paid out over 650 Million US$ in settlements. If the suit goes to court, the hearings will be held in 2017 and will definitely make things exciting as Nokia returns to the ring with it’s smartphones.
The new MacBook Pros 2016 have gone on sale in India with a starting price tag of Rs. 129,900 for the 13 inch variant without the Touch Bar. The 13 inch Touch Bar equipped model will sell for Rs. 155,900 according to Apple India.
The new MacBook Pros have a 2560×1600 native resolution and sport the Skylake Intel chipsets. In India the MacBook Pros are available in either a 256 GB SSD or 512 SSD variant with no options to customise at the moment. The newer-gen MacBookPros are also not consumer upgradable even though the SSD unit is removable, it is proprietary.
The most expensive MacBook pro is the 15 inch with Touch Bar which features a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB Storage it also comes equipped with a Radeon Pro 455 with 2GB GDDR5 + Intel HD Graphics 530, this model will cost Rs. 241,900.
The Price of the MacBooks is ridiculously higher than their counterparts in the US, where a similar 15 inch MacBook Pro costs Rs. 205,000 including taxes. Those waiting for the Macbook’s will get limited stocks in the initial rush for the new MacBooks.
The MacBook Pros also drop all ports including Magsafe, USB ports, and SD card readers for two USB – C ports in the base 13 inch MacBook and 4 USB – C ports in the higher models.
Apple has just been awarded a patent for anew device which the patent application defines as an iPhone. According to the patent Apple is researching foldable iPhone designs starting from back in 2013. This patent was filed in August and awarded today shows a new design iPhone which will look identical to the current iPhone when folded, but will unfold into a larger display device.
The patent application uses the words “carbon nanotubes” to define the mechanism that will hold the bendy iPhone together.
Conductive carbon nanotube paths can form signal paths that are flexible and resistant to cracking. The carbon nanotube structures may be incorporated into signal cables such as flexible printed circuit cables, rigid printed circuit boards, printed circuits that include rigid portions with flexible tails (sometimes referred to as “rigid flex”), portions of display structures, portions of touch sensors such as capacitive touch sensor arrays for displays or track pads, camera structures, antenna structures, housing structures, internal device structures, electrical components, substrates, brackets, housing walls, other structures, or combinations of these structures.
The application also mentions that the structure may have a hinge or a bendable joint. The iPhone of the patent may never come into play or could simply be the next iPhone of 2017.
Samsung too has been showing off bendable screens for a while and did showcase a bendable screen last year that could potentially become a smartphone of the future. Samsung patents range from various devices to various display and bend technology types and can be seen here.
According to a new report Apple manufacturer Foxconn is already testing the iPhone 8’s wireless charging technology. Something which may be exclusive to the premium variant iPhones. According to the report Apple may finally be working on the Long Range Wireless charging that was seen in Apple’s patent filing many years ago.
More news has suggested that the iPhone 8 will come in place of the iPhone 7s which would according to refresh cycles launch next year. However, in order to make a big impact for the redesign and 10 years of iPhone, the iPhone 8 moniker will be used.
Apple is said to be working on a new design of the iPhone 8 that will feature an all glass front removing the physical button and reducing the bezels significantly much like the Xiaomi MIX. However, Apple will continue to keep the earpiece and front facing camera in the top region and will put the fingerprint scanner behind the display.
Previous leaks have pointed to Apple bringing back an all glass design, which would be a single piece of glass folded from front to back, alternatively Apple has shown that they are able to make ceramic casing with the Apple Watch series 2 and is possible to make an iPhone with a ceramic back.
Apple will be holding an event on the 27th of October to launch the new revised and refreshed lineup of iMacs MacBooks and possibly new Peripherals like a new Airport Express and Extreme. The October 27 launch will start at 10:30PM IST, and will be available to watch via live streaming.
Rumours have pointed to a new design MacBook pro with a customisable OLED touch panel above the keyboard. Along with new hardware to match up with the latest est offerings from Intel. The new power button on the new Macs, will supposedly have a Touch ID sensor for added security. It is also speculated that the new Macs will ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack in order to make them extremely slim.
Leaked Macbook Case
There are also reports of a iMac Retina refresh with added Thunderbolt 3 ( USB Type C) with the newer hardware and added performance capability, Apple plans to remove the 11 inch MacBook Air from it’s lineup and add a new 13 inch model with USB Type C ports. Apple may also launch the new Apple TV which is expected to enable Apple Video, much like Apple Music a subscription service to take on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Apple is also said to finally refresh it’s dying Thunderbolt Display with a new refreshed 5K monitor which will have an integrated GPU. All refreshes will be covered on iGyaan so mark your calendars for Oct 27th.
Each year at around the same time Apple revises it’s iPhones, secrecy ensues prior to their launch. However, with the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus very little was left to imagination. Apple has solved some of the basic problems surrounding the iPhones in the past, while adding some new tricks. And, while the removal of the headphone jack seemed to be a problem during the launch, no one seems to be complaining now.
[section label=”Design”]
Design
Apple has made subtle changes to the design of the iPhone 7, for starters the edges are more rounded off and comfortable to hold. The antenna lines on the back of the phone have been moved out of sight, and if you get either the black or jet black colour the antenna lines are nearly invisible.
The addition of the Jet-black colour and the regular black colour has been appreciated by everyone. However, the black color due to it’s matte finish is extremely slippery and the jet-black iPhone is prone to scratches and damage. The slight change in the camera’s position and the size of the camera lens on the back is attractive to some, while ugly to others. Apple refuses to make the camera flush since the iPhone 6, and with the iPhone 7 it seems to have grown bigger and outward.
[section label=”Build Quality”]
Build Quality
Apple has made interesting changes to the phone to make the iPhone 7 water-resistant with an iP67 rating. The whole insides of the iPhone 7 are lined with a rubberized seal, including a nano coating on the electronics.
Although several tests have shown that the iPhone 7 has a far better water resistance than Samsung’s iP68 on their phones. The removal of the headphone jack and rubber lining of several of the iPhone’s ingress points (including a physical home button) has also made this possible. The Sim Card tray too, now, comes with a tiny rubber gasket.
The removal of a physical home button and the replacement with a touch glass surface, helps with the water resistance and also improves the life of the home button. While the back remains a solid aluminium shell, reinforced to avoid any bending issues, the front is speculated to be Gorilla Glass 5. The rear camera lens has a sapphire glass composite, which essentially has a layer of sapphire towards the outside.

[section label=”Hardware”]
Hardware
Apple has upped the hardware on the iPhone 7 considerably. Starting with a much faster chipset A10 Fusion Quad Core CPU and Hexa Core GPU. The iPhone 7 gets 2 GB of RAM along with large storage options of 32 GB , 128 GB and 256 GB.
The iPhone 7 camera has been improved with a new lens structure, wider f1.8 aperture OIS and wide colour capture. The inbuilt audio gets an upgrade to stereo speakers, and digital out via lightning and the battery is now a larger 1960 mAh unit.
The home button has been replaced by a pressure sensitive glass panel, much like 3D touch, it senses the amount of force applied and vibrates to give feedback to your actions.
[section label=”Performance”]
Performance
The iPhone is a fantastic example that more RAM does not equal more performance. At a time where most major manufacturers are shifting towards 4GB and some manufacturers are shifting towards 6 GB RAM in their phones, the Apple iPhone 7 comes with just 2 GB of RAM. A big far cry from industry expectations and norms. The Apple iPhone 7 is extremely quick to respond to actions and UI commands.
Compute times are incredibly reduced and there is no lag between app launches and swiping between applications. The benchmark scores on the iPhone 7 surpass many Android flagships, and so does day to day performance. Expect excellent gaming graphics and top tier responsiveness from the iPhone 7. The performance surpasses that of even the iPad Pro which is considered a very solid performer. Antutu score of the iPhone 7 is consistently above 174000 which is much higher than even the Note 7.
[section label=”Display”]
Display
Adding a wide color gamut the iPhone 7’s display is able to output cinema standard colours.
Our biggest gripe, however, has to be the lack of a better resolution display, and with a 1334 × 750 px display on the iPhone 7 we are truly disappointed. The resolution is far more noticeable when you have used a 2K display, or even a 1080p display.
In 2015 Sony managed a 4K display into a smartphone. we expected at least a 1920 x 1080 px display in the new iPhone 7. This display is an LCD IPS display, not AMOLED as per expectations everyone had.
iPhone 7’s display has excellent viewing angles and is 25% more bright when compared to the iPhone 6s. The display still includes their 3D touch technology which allows you to initiate a contextual menu if you hard press on the screen. This is becoming more and more prominent and usable in iOS 10.
[section label=”Multimedia”]
Multimedia and Gaming
The multimedia experience is impressive on the iPhone 7, with the wide colour display watching videos is excellent. The stereo Speakers deliver more than 100 db of audio output which is the highest in this category. One of the speakers on the iPhone 7 is forward firing and that helps in watching those endless Vines or Facebook videos.
Gaming is excellent as has been with each iPhone, Games are optimized well to work on iOS and that is exactly the case with the iPhone 7. With a mix of high end gaming performance on the chipset along with good audio from the speakers and responsive feedback from the touchscreen, you will like the gaming experience a lot. The new six core GPU handles graphics with ease and delivers an extremely smooth gaming experience.
The removal of the 3.5 mm headphone jack will be a big impact for those with a good collection of analogue headphones, however, the improved battery life means that you will seldom need to charge your iPhone while listening to music. If you want to use analogue headphones using the included lightning to 3.5 mm adapter is the only resolve for now. Lightning headphones have already existed and a lot of companies will be releasing headphones with that capability in the coming months.
Audio though the lightning port can be pushed in high resolution and several streaming apps will support the output. Music is extremely well balanced and the volumes can be cranked yup high without loss to quality, which will be appreciated by serious audiophiles.
Apple wants you to go the bluetooth route, and we are not convinced. The included lightning EarPods sound pretty similar to previous variants, and still sound tinny are poor constructed and they simply do not stay in the ear. The removal of the 3.5 mm headphone jack seems pre-mature but also necessary if Apple is to be believed.
[section label=”Camera”]
Camera
The iPhone 7 gets an improved camera combination as well, with a 12 MP optical stabalization equipped main camera and a 7 MP front camera. The rear camera gets an ƒ/1.8 aperture, and an improved six-element lens, now that you can see the images on the screen the camera shoots with a wide color capture. The LED flash is also extremely bright with quad LED array for a more accurate flash colour, and it works really well, with a firing range of upto 10 feet. Assisting the low light performance the ƒ/1.8 aperture mixed with OIS lets you expose for a longer period and get a better image without any shake.
The camera shoots video upto 4k resolution, although a capacity of 128 GB or 256 GB is recommended for budding iPhone video enthusiasts as the video file sizes are massive. The video comes out impressive with the wide color capture.
You also get 120fps slow mo for 1080p video and 240fps slow-mo for 720p video. The camera and photos app in iOS 10 works well to display live images, and organise all your image collections making them easy to find. The new search options let you search by location, with friends and by time when they were clicked.
The front 7 MP camera gets good wide colour selfies for a more natural looking image. The retina flash feature is now brighter and allows for some light fill. The display is 25% brighter on iPhone 7, hence you get a brighter flash for selfies. The camera lens on the front camera is also wider than before so you can fill more people in your pictures.

iOS 10 and iCloud
One of the biggest changes to hit iPhones this year has been iOS 10, and while iOS 10 is not limited to iPhone 7, the usability is far more improved. The menus and texts are easier to read and navigate. You also have more options in control centre, and finally iOS gets widgets. However, the new interface is far more optimised and smoother. Apps load quicker and multitasking is far more efficient. More 3D touch features are available, and at the least you can 3D touch on any app, even those which don’t support it to share the app with your friends via email or iMessage. iOS 10 also syncs WhatsApp and Skype like VOIP and IM services with deep linking so your contacts app allows you to initiate WhatsApp calls and Skype calls directly.
You also get the WhatsApp call history in your main call history. Moreover, now when you are on a WhatsApp call, and you get a regular call, it rings in the background and does not disconnect ( or hold ) the WhatsApp call.
Apart from these aesthetic changes, Apple also brings more deep integration of Home, with smart connected devices that now Siri can operate for you. So if you have supported hardware like a thermostat or Philips Hue lighting you can simply ask Siri to control it.
Siri is far more responsive and understands a whole new set of accents, including the Indian accent, much better. With iCloud sync you can now co-share documents and spreadsheets via iCloud with others who can operate without owning any Apple devices, managing the files on a browser online. Big improvements on speed and battery life thanks to lowering the footprint of services and preferences.make the iOS 10 experience great. However a lot of features are still missing and sharing is still properly restricted to Air Drop or third party apps like Send Anywhere.
[section label=”Networks and Battery”]
Networks and Battery
Thanks to new network radios provided by Intel, network strength is far more improved and there is less switching between 4G and 3G for a better much more improved network performance, in comparison to the iPhone 6s the iPhone 7 delivers far better network and call quality. Thanks to a mix of the new A10 fusion chipset with two little cores and the major improvements on iOS 10 along with a larger sized battery.
The iPhone 7 has significant battery life improvements, thanks to a large battery, iOS tweaks along with the big little architecture on the new chips. With heavy usage that includes phone calls, video recording, IM, editing and general browsing of the internet, mixed with gaming and video playback the iPhone 6s would require a charge by 3 pm if the start time was around 8 am. Now in a real life scenario the day completes with 20% left in the charge. This is significant and will change the usage case scenarios for a lot of people. The charging is still restricted to the lightning port, and if you want a quicker charge you will need to buy yourself a 12 W Apple iPad adapter, which the iPhone 7 supports natively.

[section label=”Conclusion”]
Conclusion
On the outset, the iPhone 7 appears not to be a major upgrade, the reality is far from it. Apart from all the Jet Black and matte black goodness of the antenna hiding new colour, the iPhone 7 also improves heavily on many other aspects. The phone is very well sealed and water resistant, to the extent of being considered waterproof. The build quality is much more improved, and the performance is best in class.
The camera has improved from previous generations and DXO mark grades it extremely high among already available phones. You will find improvements on audio quality, battery life, network, call quality and the new home button.
The iPhone 7 is a worthy upgrade, and a good one at that, but we still want a better display and to be able to charge the phone while listening to music.
But, we still want a better display and to be able to charge the phone while listening to music.

While the iPhone is available in five colours the Matte Black or just “black” is our favourite, although the new “Jet Black” colour which is an extremely glossy polished black finish seems to be a crowd pleaser, and Apple may not launch it in India due to stock limitations.
The home button takes some getting used to on the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. However, you get to set this to your liking during initial setup from three levels of pressure sensitivity.
The price of possession of iPhones may have been too much for two Delhi persons who were caught with a consignment of 900 stolen iPhones.
The value of the total shipment considered to be 2.25 Crore. Mehtab Alam, 24, and Arman, 22, from Mahipalpur in New Delhi, decided to quit their jobs and jump the truck they used to drive previously to attain the stolen goods.
The two robbers held the truck driver captive before robbing the mobile phones near Rajokri flyover. They were caught within 48 hours at Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area. The gang of the robbers is estimated to be of 8 people
The robbery comes just weeks before the official launch of the iPhone 7 in India, which is said to happen on the 7th of October. The iPhones recovered from the loot are older model iPhone 5S’ and were being shipped from the warehouse to the distribution centre.
After the huge success of the iPhone 7 prior to its official launch in India, Apple India is trying to sell off it’s old stock of the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and the iPhone SE which was launched early 2016. The price cuts are significant, however, understanding the reasoning behind it, even more so.
One of the main reasons for the price cut, is the launch of newer variety of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which was announced along side the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. The new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus which will now be available in only a 32GB storage and 128 GB storage capacity seem to haver a newer-gen of the same chip which is said to be more battery efficient and a higher quality of the Nand Flash.
Apple India has discounted the current stocks of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus by upto Rs. 22000 (for the 128 GB iPhone 6s Plus) to eliminate the existing stocks. Apple will sell the new variants with the 32 GB and 128 GB capacities for renewed pricing when it launched in October alongside the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Apple iPhone 6S (128GB) which is currently priced at Rs 82,000, will now be available at Rs 60,000 after a price drop of Rs 22,000. The iPhone 6s Plus (128GB) will sell at Rs 70,000 post the Rs. 22000 discount. The iPhone SE on the other hand just gets a discount of Rs. 4000 on the 64 GB variant. However the price cut is on official prices, while most sellers are already selling the iPhones at similar prices on websites like Amazon (see below.=)
If you don’t care about a more efficient chip, now is a fantastic time to buy the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus. Else, hold on for the officially renewed iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
