  • Nokia Chat Beta For Lumia And Asha Devices Released

Nokia has released the first public beta of its Nokia Chat app for Windows Phone 7.5 and 8 devices. Similar to software like WhatsApp, Kik, Kakao Talk and Facebook Messenger, Nokia Chat allows cross-platform messaging between Windows Phone, Asha, Symbian and S40 devices.

    nokia chat

The first beta includes Canada, along with the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Nigeria, South Africa and a few others, to ease the company’s servers into the load before opening to a wider audience. While the app likely won’t get much play in North America, it stands to be quite popular in countries with established bases of Symbian, Asha and S40 devices, of which there are hundreds of millions still in use.

Windows Phone 8 users can take advantage of lock screen notifications, but all WP users will receive toast push notifications and live tile updates. The app also integrates with Yahoo Messenger, but it would be nice if Nokia could integrate Google and Facebook, as the current solutions on the platform are pretty terrible.

For Windows Phone 8 users, the app can also take advantage of voice dictation, voice commands — example “Chat with Michael Jordan” — as well as lockscreen notifications. The last feature displays a counter informing you of the number of unread messages.

Nokia Chat for Windows Phone is available to download through Nokia Beta Labs.

  • 2013 Shanghai Motor Show: The Best Of The Rest

2013 Shanghai Motor Show: The Best Of The Rest

We saw some pretty high-profile reveals along with an array of launches by Chinese manufacturers over the weekend in Shanghai. Here’s our pick of the best on display.

    Shanghai

     MG CS Concept

One of the bigger stars of the Shanghai Motor Show was also one of the biggest surprises. MG unveiled its CS Concept SUV, adding to the competition in the compact SUV segment. However, the production model is at least 2 years away, and in all probability won’t look as flashy as the concept. Still, we like MG’s new direction, and can’t wait for more details about the CS to be released.

    Shanghai

     Nissan Friend-Me Concept

When it comes to identifying future trends, and thinking ahead, few automotive manufacturers have the foresight that Nissan does. For this reason, the long and unconventionally designed 4-door sedan caught everyone’s eye with its sharp styling. Knowing Nissan, there is a good chance that the ‘Friend-Me’ may actually reach the production stage, though we’re not sure how long the name will stick for.

    Shanghai

    Buick Riviera Concept

Sharing its name with the famous Buick, last seen in 1999, the Riviera Concept is said to be a preview to Buick’s future styling direction. The Riviera Concept incorporates some beautiful flowing lines over its long shell, and shows-off new versions of the marque’s classic waterfall grille design. It’s powered by Buick’s dual-mode wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle propulsion system, which allows the car to be charged wirelessly just by driving atop a special charging mat on the ground, the car’s powertrain is just as futuristic as its exterior shape. This one’s for the future.

    Shanghai

    Icona Vulcano

One of the standouts of the show was the stunning Vulcano concept from Italian-owned but Shanghai-based design firm Icona. Designed by a former Bertone employer, and engineered by a former Scuderia Ferrari engineer, the Vulcano was mobbed at the Shanghai Motor Show. Originally conceived as a one-off example to showcase Icona’s styling prowess, it has now been announced that 5 total Vulcanos will be built. Reminiscent of the Lexus LFA as well as the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Vulcano has an option of two powertrains, 870 or 950 bhp and goes from 0-97 kmph in 2.9 or 3.0 seconds depending on the powertrain. It also boasts a top speed of 217 mph.

    Shanghai

    Acura SUV-X Concept

The SUV-X Concept from Acura is another in a long line of aspirants in the compact SUV segment. Acuras have known to be packed with tons of technology on the inside, but have never really turned heads on the streets. The SUV-X Concept deviates from the trend, with bold and eyecatching styling, pleasantly surprising all of us. Acura says that the SUV-X is the precursor to a production offering from the brand in China that will come in about three years.

    ShanghaiFord Escort Concept

The Escort is back!! Well, as a concept for now. At the very interesting reveal, Ford said, “Customers in China described seeking a vehicle that is stylish – but not one that is arrogant or pretentious” and that’s what it believes the new Escort will be about. Always known for being excellent as an affordably daily driver, but not one to set benchmarks in performance or design, the new Escort Concept’s minimal design is contemporary and appealing on the whole. This car will probably be launched only in the Chinese market, and is expected to create quite a stir when it does.

    Shanghai

    Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupé Concept

This sportier member of the CrossBlue family sits in between the Tiguan and the Touareg in size and has all the hallmarks of becoming another success for the brand. Featuring a high-tech drivetrain that consists of twin electric motors, one up front and one at the rear, powered by a 9.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, the Concept also has a 295 bhp, direct-injection, gasoline-burning V6 under the hood. These three powerhouses put out a total of 415 bhp. Also, atleast in theory, the Concept should be able to travel 21 miles on electricity alone and we think it looks pretty nice as well. What’s not to like?

    Shanghai

Lamborghini Aventador LP 720-4 50° Anniversario

Lamborghini unveiled the Aventador Anniversario at Shanghai as part of its 50 year celebrations. Offering the same engine as the base Aventador, it manages to produce 720 bhp instead of 700 due to different tuning, and features a couple of external upgrades. Read more about it here.

    Shanghai

    Maserati Ghibli

The Ghibli name is back in the form of an entry-level luxury sedan as Maserati hopes to expand its sales figures to compete with the likes of BMW, Audi and Jaguar. The Ghibli is the first Maserati in history to have a diesel engine as an option, with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. Read more about it here.

    ShanghaiBMW X4 Concept

Yet another addition to the compact SUV segment, BMW unveiled the baby X6 or the X4 concept at Shanghai. BMW claims that the X4 is a preview to what the entire X range will look like in the coming years. Read more about it here.

  • 2013 Shanghai Motor Show: Mercedes Benz GLA Concept Revealed

2013 Shanghai Motor Show: Mercedes Benz GLA Concept Revealed

One of the more lustworthy attractions of the Shanghai Motor Show, the Mercedes Benz GLA Concept is  said to be 90% representative of the GLA production vehicle to go on sale next year. Mercedes aims to heat up the compact SUV segment with a competitive price tag of about $40,000.

    GLA

Mercedes seems to have hit the right chord with its new design fundas, as the GLA takes more than a few cues from the new and equally attention-hungry CLA saloon. The striking GLA concept offers an aggressive yet modern front end with only two horizontal bars for a front grille, with the three-pointed star at the centre acting as the cherry on the cake. The sloping roofline flows into the tailgate giving it a very sporty and sleek silhouette. Strong character lines down the sides, alongwith the frameless doors further enhance this image.

The front headlights are one of the usual outlandish concept car features, with in-built laser beam projectors, capable of projecting videos and images on a screen. This along with the very intricate, yet impractical interior will surely not be on the options list when the GLA hits the market. What is expected to make the final cut, is the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine sitting under the bulging hood, which sends 208 bhp and 258 pound-feet of torque through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to all four wheels via Mercedes’ proprietary 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The GLA class is expected to give tough competition to the BMW X3, the Audi Q3 as well as the Range Rover Evoque, when it launches early next year.

  • Breaking : Micromax Takes a Stab at Samsung’s Zero Campaign

Breaking : Micromax Takes a Stab at Samsung’s Zero Campaign

Seen Samsung’s new Zero Campaign? Looks like the folks over at Micromax have seen it too, and have come up with their unique way of tackling the information. We just saw Micromax’s website and stumbled upon this image it states with a big sign : “CAN OWN NOW”

More than a million people have already bought the incredibly loaded Micromax Canvas Range of smartphones, without EMI, 0% interest or other schemes, Because our phones come at prices that don’t need any!” reads the banner.

Micromax has previously taken stabs at Samsung when they ridiculed the Y series in the WHY Y ads.

    [youtube id=”5S-WwN9yask” width=”100%” height=”300px”]

Looks like Micromax is enjoying the success of their Canvas portfolio and don’t mind edging the competition with a little word play.

Earlier today Micromax had announced that they sold over 1 Million Canvas devices.

The Canvas series has proved to be a trendsetter in Indian smartphone segment. The demand for these devices has been on an upward curve from the time of their launch. These are our flagship models and the overwhelming consumer response has made us confident that we are headed towards the right direction. When we launched the Canvas HD, for the first time our online sales partners had witnessed a digital queue in cyberspace to such an extent for any product, to the traditional cue one normally sees. It was great to witness consumers wait until 12:00am for their chance to book the Canvas HD on Valentine’s Day selling 9000 units in less than 24 hours.” said Mr. Shubhodip Pal, CMO, Micromax

  • Nokia To Unveil New Lumia In London On May 14, Will It Be The “Catwalk”?

Nokia is planning to hold a May 14 press conference in London to talk about where it is headed with its Lumia line of Windows devices.

    Nokia

Nokia Catwalk rumors have been looming in the air since a few weeks now, and this week, a couple of images had surfaced on the Chinese website Baidu, giving us an idea of how the smartphone might look like.

The Nokia Catwalk is expected to come with a 4.5-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. The smartphone will be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor paired with 1GB of RAM, just like the Lumia 920, but the Nokia Catwalk will comes with lesser, 16GB of internal storage, as opposed to 32GB on the Lumia 920.

The Nokia Catwalk is expected to sport a 8.7 megapixel f2.0 camera and a 2,000mAh non-removable battery. The dimensions of the upcoming device are expected to be 129 x 71 x 8.4mm, and it is expected to weigh-in at just 132 grams.

And though the company recently announced entry- and mid-range devices in the Lumia 520 and 720, it hasn’t launched a flagship model since the the Lumia 920 was unveiled in September. In the smartphone world, that is a very long time.

We’ve also heard rumours that Nokia might debut a Windows 8 tablet, and considering the length of the event — it’s set to last six hours — we wouldn’t be surprised to see more than one product announced.

Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft seems to be stronger than ever at this point, which would make a Windows 8 tablet — or even a Windows RT slate — a possibility.

We’ll have to wait and see what Nokia has in store for us. But keep in mind that it is launching the product(s) the day before Google I/O begins, so expect big things from the company.

  • Apple Celebrates iTunes 10th Anniversary With Timeline

Apple Celebrates iTunes 10th Anniversary With Timeline

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of iTunes, Apple has put together an entertaining multimedia timeline of the digital music store.

The iTunes’ formal birthday isn’t until Sunday, but the timeline, which is called “A Decade of iTunes,” is online now in the music section of the store.

    itunes

The timeline marks the period from the time iTunes was first launched on April 28 2003 right up to the release of Justin Timberlake’s new album on March 19 this year. Peppered along with the milestones are the best selling song and album on the day of the milestone (for e.g. on 10 May 2005 when the iTunes store was officially launched in European countries like Denmarak, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, ‘Speed of Sound’ from Coldplay’s X & Y was the best selling song, while Morcheeba’s ‘The Antidote’ was the best selling album).

“The sky was falling, and iTunes provided a place where we were going to monetize music and in theory stem the tide of piracy. So, it was certainly a solution for the time,” said Michael McDonald, who co-founded ATO Records with Dave Matthews and whose Mick Management roster includes John Mayer and Ray LaMontagne.

The iTunes music store became much more than a solution; it changed how we consume music and access entertainment. It’s not only music’s biggest retailer, it also dominates the digital video market, capturing 67 percent of the TV show sale market and 65 percent of the movie sale market, according to information company NPD group. Its apps are the most profitable, it has expanded to books and magazines, and it is now available in 119 countries. This week, iTunes posted a record $2.4 billion in revenue in first-quarter earnings.

The app store now reaches 90 percent of the world’s population, Oppenheimer said, and is available in 155 countries. There are now over 850,000 iOS apps in the store, 350,000 of which are tailored for iPad.

As of the second fiscal quarter of 2013, iTunes now offers 35 million songs in 119 countries, 60,000 movies in 109 countries and 1.7 million iBook titles.

Apple also said that payouts to app developers has reached $9 billion since the App Store initiative launched in 2008, and the company is currently meting out some $1 billion per quarter to app makers.

  • LG Has Plans To Launch An OLED Flexible Display Smartphone This Year

LG Has Plans To Launch An OLED Flexible Display Smartphone This Year

LG announced their Q1 2013 results yesterday and declared smartphone shipments of 10.3 million units. Executives said these results were “healthy” and mainly from the global success of the flagship devices like the Optimus G and Nexus 4. By the end of the year LG estimates their smartphone shipments will reach 45 million units.

    LG

If everything works out the way they intend, LG will be come to market this year with a smartphone that has a flexible display. This is something Samsung wanted to accomplish, but has reportedly met with technology delays. According to the Wall Street Journal, Yoon Bu-hyun, vice president at LG’s mobile business, said they’re currently working closely with the LG Display Company and will produce a smartphone that has a flexible OLED screen.

No other details on specs or timing, but will be great to finally see this technology come to market. Hopefully it’s priced reasonable and made available globally. Perhaps the go-to-market name will be the LG Optimus “Flex.”

LG is among several mobile companies, including one of its chief competitors, Samsung, eyeing flexible OLED display technology. The companies envision devices featuring fully flexible screens, allowing for more leniency in product design. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Samsung showed off a 5-inch demo unit with a flexible screen. Nokia has also shown off similar prototypes.

A year ago, LG trotted out a design for a flexible display for e-book readers.

  • Hublot Celebrates The Launch Of The LaFerrari With Stunning Watch

Hublot Celebrates The Launch Of The LaFerrari With Stunning Watch

Next to their impressive collaboration with Monster on new luxury headphones, Hublot has presented another highlight today at Baselworld – the Masterpiece MP-05 LaFerrari. Paying tribute to the new flagship Ferrari super car, the LaFerrari, the brand has developed a watch from the future.

Hublot’s MP-05 “LaFerrari” has been designed, developed and manufactured entirely by the Swiss firm and features a 50-day power reserve–a world record power reserve for a hand-wound tourbillon watch. It has a unique in-house crafted mechanical movement principle, that can keep it ticking as far as two months after you stopped wearing it.

    laferrari

It has a special microblasted black PVD-coated titanium case, which encases 637 individual components and thanks to the tour billion movement system, they are arranged to look like a Ferrari engine bay, hinting to the red cylinder banks with the admission manifold in the middle.

With carbon fiber on the case, there are some light design cues in the watch from the Ferrari car. The top crystal is one, and the entire case design is meant to mimic the shape of the beautiful car, though it is a light connection. The Ferrari relationship allows Hublot to experiment in new areas and work with the famous automaker to produce rather original timepieces such as this one.

The hour and minute are displayed to the right of the barrels, also indicated by means of one anodized black aluminum cylinder each. On their left is the cylinder indicating the power reserve. Reinforcing bars either side, made from anodized red aluminum, also bring to mind Ferrari’s signature exteriors.

Hublot will make only 50 of these stunning watches, so only one in ten LaFerrari buyers will be able to have one.

Price or the Hublot Masterpiece MP-05 LaFerrari watch will be about 300,000 Swiss Francs (or Rs 17234400.00). When are you getting yours?

  • Google Joins FIDO Alliance To Find An Alternative To Passwords

Google has joined a consortium of tech companies including PayPal and Lenovo attempting to stop passwords being the sole protector of personal accounts.

The group, the FIDO Alliance, is working on technology that would give the device a person was using a role in authenticating them so that a password alone is not enough to unlock an account. That approach can make it impossible to compromise accounts just by stealing passwords, as hackers did in order to break into Twitter this year and LinkedIn last year.

    google

There have been some rumors about Google working on an authentication device, something like a USB stick for example, and this is what FIDO, which stands for Fast IDentity Online, specializes in.

FIDO is working on a standard way of providing authentication online. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with the device or method used for the authentication, but with the way in which websites can request authentication and in which users can provide it.

“Joining the FIDO Alliance is a great way to increase industry momentum around open standards for strong authentication,” Sam Srinivas, who leads information security at Google, said. “We look forward to continuing our current development work on strong, universal second-factor tokens as part of a new FIDO Alliance working group,” he added.

In practice, users would have an authentication device, which could be a USB device with a key or a fingerprint scanner or anything else of the sort.

The unique key provided by the device would be used by websites to provide access. This key would be hard to spoof and harder to obtain.

Certainly a step in the right direction.

  • Nokia Announces The Asha 210, QWERTY Keyboard, Dedicated Whatsapp Button

Nokia Announces The Asha 210, QWERTY Keyboard, Dedicated Whatsapp Button

Nokia teased those interested in a physical QWERTY the other day and promised they’ll show the world their latest handset today. Well, it’s the S40 Asha 210. A lightweight entry-level phone that has a full QWERTY keyboard and a dedicated WhatsApp button. The 210 is targeting the uber cost conscious crowd and has priced this at a measly $72 USD (Rs 4000/-) outright, aiming “to go on sale in the second quarter of 2013.

    asha 210

As for specs, the Asha 210 has a physical QWERTY keyboard, a 2.4-inch QVGA display (320×240 resolution and 169ppi), 2MP camera and no front-facing camera, “offers an astonishing battery life” that will garner you “up to 46 days standby with the Single SIM model; up to 24 days with Dual SIM.” The Asha 210 weighs 99.5 grams and will be available in yellow, cyan, black, magenta, white.

The highlights of the 210, apart from the physical keyboard, is the dedicated WhatsApp button for quick access to your conversations.

Pricing and availability for Indian customers has not been revealed yet. More to come soon!

  • Exclusive : Samsung Galaxy S4 India version Hands On

Exclusive : Samsung Galaxy S4 India version Hands On

Samsung is all set to launch the Galaxy S4 in India on the 26th of April 2013. It is believed that the flagship smartphone for the Korean company will come for Rs. 42,900/- and the device will be launched in two colors namely the Black Mist and the Frost White.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 in India will be available initially in a bundled offer which will include a flip case and some accessories. The Smartphone has received many a critical acclaim globally thanks to its many features and software enhancements.

In the hand the Samsung Galaxy S4 seems a lot more robust than its predecessor, however the feel is still plasticky. The device does end up looking a lot more elegant thanks to the brushed aluminum “look” bezel and the nicely pattered back panel which is better visible in the black mist color. Although the Galaxy S4 sports a larger 5 inch display, it does not look a lot bigger than the S3, in fact the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a lot more rounded and fits well in the hand as well as in the pocket.

The interface on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a lot more refined than on other Android phones, including other Samsung Phones. The devices we saw were prototypes, however they ran wonderfully well, with no lag, gestures were great too as you will see in the video.

[pullquote_left] The phone does magic![/pullquote_left]The TouchWiz/Nature UI is now easily recognizable and does not have a lot of differentiation from previous editions, the built in features from the past like multi window, pop up play along with some new UI elements like, finger hover and retina sensors make using the device magical. From a consumer point of view the phone does magic, which in a sense of the word sets it apart from devices that don’t do “magic”.

    Samsung Galaxy S4 9

With just a limited time spent with the two Galaxy S4’s I can safely say that the white color is much better and looks a lot more nicer than the Black, however the black is a lot more elegant and with that a finger print magnet.

With the launch just around the corner, the Samsung Galaxy S4 may just as well be the biggest hype this quarter from Samsung and with the details of the Note 3 leaking out, we can safely assume that its not the last hype for 2013.

  • Nokia Posts QWERTY Phone Teaser, Wednesday Announcement Expected

Nokia Posts QWERTY Phone Teaser, Wednesday Announcement Expected

Nokia has released a teaser image today for an upcoming announcement, potentially revealing a new QWERTY smartphone, although all the signs point to this device falling under the Asha range of low-end quasi-smartphones, as opposed to their flagship Windows Phone Lumia line-up.

    nokia

The teaser reveals rounded corners for the prospective device, showing a Z key and contoured Shift key.

The phone is apparently decked out in the vibrant primary colours that are the signature of Nokia’s Windows Phone-powered Lumia smart phone range. But a Qwerty Lumia is unlikely, and with Nokia’s mobile devices making the announcement it appears this will be a feature phone, perhaps an Asha phone.

You won’t have to wait long to find out.

On Wednesday morning at 7am GMT we will be announcing something new, followed by a Q&A session with Neil Broadley from our Mobile Phones team and a special guest.

Other than a yellow color option and a seemingly thin bezel, there’s nothing we know about the upcoming device. There should be more teasers until Wednesday, maybe even a leak so stay tuned!

There have been Windows Phone devices with QWERTY keyboards in the past, like the now- extinct Dell Venue Pro. It would be nice to have that option again.

Nokia’s new teaser ad comes close on the heels of the company’s 2013 Q1 results which reported a steep decline in Asha sales. “Asha full touch smartphones Q1 volumes decreased 46% quarter-on-quarter to 5.0 million units, reflecting intense competitive industry dynamics as well as lower seasonal demand,” said the company.

  • Newly Discovered Code In Google Page Hints At Google Now For Web

Newly Discovered Code In Google Page Hints At Google Now For Web

Google Now is arguably the single best feature found in Android Jelly Bean, and soon, it seems, it will also be added to Google’s homepage. Some code from a page that’s tested by Google offers more information about this feature.

    Google Now

Google Now brings you search results before you even go looking for them. Just swipe up, inside of Google’s search app, and Google Now activates. From there, the Google search app delivers today’s weather, your Google Calendar appointments, directions to home or work (depending on what time of day it is), a heads up to nearby events, the score from your favorite sports team’s latest game, boarding passes, package tracking, dinner reservations and a lot more.

Source code for the page in testing encourages you to, “get started with Google Now,” because it provides, “just the right information at just the right time.” It has the option to change your home and work locations as, “Google Now uses your Home location to show relevant information like weather, traffic conditions, and nearby places.”

As TechCrunch reports, previous discoveries have indicated that Google Now is probably being worked on for Chrome desktop browser integration, and for inclusion in Google’s iOS search app. But bringing it to the Google homepage means it’ll be broadly accessible. It also means Google will have an opportunity to deliver more via its homepage, sort of like an iGoogle, but hopefully better at its job of providing you with relevant, personalized content.

There are also plenty of references to “now_card.”

Google Now on the internet, yes please!
