Sony’s Security continues to fail, Subsidiary So-Net Entertainment attacked

According to The Wall Street Journal hackers have accessed the customer accounts of Sony subsidiary So-net Entertainment Corp, an ISP, and have stolen about $1,225 worth of redeemable gift points. This after the massive breach of Sony’s Playstation Network which caused a loss of 12.3 million credit card numbers from the networks database.

Sony said the So-net hacker tried to break into its systems more than 10,000 times before he or she was able to successfully log-in. The intruder was able to access 201 accounts, and he or she stole the redeemable points from 128 customers.

“Although we can’t completely rule out the possibility that there is a connection with the PSN issue, the likelihood is low,” said So-net Entertainment spokesperson Keisuke Watabe, noting that the style of attack was different.

Apple finalizes Cloud Streaming deal with EMI, Still in talks with SONY and Universal

According to a report filed by CNET, Apple has completed a cloud-music streaming deal with record label EMI. Apple, Sony Music Entertainment and the Universal Music Group are working on agreements as well

Warner Music Group and Apple have already signed a cloud service agreement .

“Apple will finish behind Google and Amazon in the race to the cloud, but Apple now has the freedom to offer a range of features that rivals are prevented from rolling out because of the licensing restrictions,”

The cloud is the term used to describe when a person uses a third-party’s servers for computing instead of a local PC. One of the core features of a cloud music service is enabling consumers to store their songs on the companies’ servers. They can then access their libraries from Web-connected devices.

    PRESS RELEASE

Restoration of PlayStation®Network and Qriocity Services Begins

Increased Security Measures Implemented Before Service Restoration; Consumer Data Protection a Full-Time, Company-Wide Commitment

TOKYO, May 14, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) will today begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation®Network and Qriocity Services. The phased restoration will be on a country by country basis beginning in the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Middle East.

The first phase of restored services for these countries and regions will include:

    • Sign-in for PlayStation®Network and Qriocity services, including the resetting of passwords
    • Restoration of online game-play across PS3 and PSP
    • Playback rental video content, if within rental period, of PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
    • Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity, for current subscribers, on PS3 and PC
    • Access to 3rd party services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB.tv
    • ‘Friends’ category on PS3, including Friends List, Chat Functionality, Trophy Comparison, etc
    • PlayStation Home
    • Increased Security Measures

As the result of a criminal cyber attack on the company’s data-center located in San Diego, California, U.S.A., SNEI shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services on April 20, in order for the company to undergo an investigation and make enhancements to the overall security of the network infrastructure. Working closely with several respected outside security firms, the company has implemented new and additional security measures that strengthen safeguards against unauthorized activity, and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information.

The company has made considerable enhancements to the data security, including updating and adding advanced security technologies, additional software monitoring and penetration and vulnerability testing, and increased levels of encryption and additional firewalls. The company also added a variety of other measures to the network infrastructure including an early-warning system for unusual activity patterns that could signal an attempt to compromise the network.

“I’d like to send my sincere regret for the inconvenience this incident has caused you, and want to thank you all for the kind patience you’ve shown as we worked through the restoration process,” said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. “I can’t thank you enough for your patience and support during this time. We know even the most loyal customers have been frustrated by this process and are anxious to use their Sony products and services again. We are taking aggressive action at all levels to address the concerns that were raised by this incident, and are making consumer data protection a full-time, company wide commitment.”

“During the past 18 months, we’ve seen a dramatic rise in the volume of cyber attacks, their sophistication and their impact on businesses. Thwarting cyber-crime requires an evolutionary approach to security that is well integrated, reduces risk exposure and improves efficiencies,” said Francis deSouza, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Security Group, Symantec. “Today’s cyber crime attacks are proving to be more covert, more targeted and better organized than those we’ve seen in years past. In working with Sony on the move of their data-center, it’s clear they’re implementing measures to reduce security risks moving forward.”

As an additional measure, Fumiaki Sakai, president of Sony Global Solutions Inc. (SGS), has been appointed acting Chief Information Security Officer of SNEI. In addition to his current role at SGS, Mr. Sakai, in his role at SNEI, will work to further reinforce overall information security across the company’s network infrastructure. Mr. Sakai will lead the recruiting effort in finding a new and permanent CISO for SNEI. As CISO, Mr. Sakai will report to Tim Schaaff, president, SNEI, as well as to Mr. Shinji Hasejima, CIO, Sony Corporation.

“While we understand the importance of getting our services back online, we did not rush to do so at the expense of extensively and aggressively testing our enhanced security measures. Our consumers’ safety remains our number one priority,” Hirai continued. “We want to assure our customers that their personal information is being protected with some of the best security technologies available today, so that everyone can feel comfortable enjoying all that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer.”

The restoration of the services across the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Middle East are beginning, and consumers will be able to enjoy some of the online functionality provided by both the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. Phased restoration in Japan and other Asian countries and regions will be announced in due course. The company expects to have the services fully restored by the end of May 2011.

The company will be offering customers a “Welcome Back” package of services and premium content to all registered PlayStation Network and Qriocity account services. The details of this program will be announced in each region shortly.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc : Full Review with Video

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc : Full Review with Video

One of the most beautiful Android devices in the market yet, The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc proves that not all Android Devices need to be dull and boring. The Arc is a show stopper, and it certainly impressed us on another level.

Let start with the usual line up.

    BUILD QUALITY and HARDWARE

The Xperia Arc has a deceiving structure, the device looks like a plastic toy initially, but is extremely well built and once you hold the device in your hand you will never make the same mistake again. It has a great design which tapers out in the center and broadens out to the side.

Contrary to what most critics are saying the device is extremely comfortable to hold in the hand and fits comfortably when gripping the device during those in game driving scenes.

The Xperia Arc also packs a brilliant bit of hardware in terms of specs. Check them out :

    CAMERA and MULTIMEDIA

The camera on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has an 8 MegaPixel Sony Exmor-R Sensor. It is just something you will love to – well, LOVE. The camera is absolutely brilliant, and comes close to a perfect replacement for a day use digital camera. The camera is extremely sensitive to light and will pick up the slightest detail in the image. The device also has 720p recording capability which when combined with onboard image stabilization methods provides a decent set of tools for video capture.

We were however, disappointed with the lack of quality and depth in the video captured by the Arc. while it looks absolutely stunning on the Device , video playback on a big screen looks washed out to say the least.

The Arc also provided the best movie/video experience we have had with an Android Device. The Display simply cannot be praised enough, the colors are deep and the resolution combined with the all new Bravia Engine for Mobile phones makes the video quality just Superb. We have not seen better quality on a Phone display period.

Sound quality, video playback and Audio/Video streaming work flawlessly and deliver a promising multimedia experience. The placement of the onboard loudspeaker is at an akward position and when you are holding the device in landscape, you will find yourself covering he speaker with your finger. The results of which can be devastating for the volume levels.

Check out the Video Capture Sample

    PHONE and MESSAGING

The device is exceptionally good at doing what its meant to , the voice clarity is -bang on- at both ends, and network performance is sustained. The device is really good and pocket-able and simple to use, the phone dialer is fast and has large keys, the contacts and messaging screens are easy to navigate and simple to use.

The keyboard on the device is also, possibly the best stock keyboard we have used, clean large-square button layout increases the accuracy of your typing capabilities many-a-fold. The keyboard is quick as is the touchscreen responsive, creating one of the best touch input interfaces. You will actually enjoy typing on this keyboard, so text away!

    BATTERY

Usage life on the Xperia Arc was erratic. Sometimes lasting a full day without a recharge, and sometimes asking for juice every 5-6 hours. The battery life tests revealed a lot more info :-

    • 2G Talk Time  : 4.5-6 Hours
    • 3G Talk Time  : 3.5 Hours
    • 3G Browsing : 4 Hours
    • Wifi Browsing : 5-6 Hours
    • Video Playback : BE : 4.5 Hours / Without BE : 6 Hours
    • Audio Playback : Screen Off : 14 Hours (approx)

    USER INTERFACE

The device runs Android 2.3 with a custom time-scape UI on top. The UI is simply beautiful and is like a melodious song that has no ending. The UI is the most innovative form of developer work seen on a stock device since the HTC Sense. The use of new widgets with the clean interface and the customizable App Drawer/ Full Menu make the device User Experience a wonderful one.

    CONCLUSION

The device is good to look at and comes with Android 2.3 from the get go. The camera is good at taking pictures but, just average at video quality. The build is solid and the display like we said earlier has no parallel comparison. The device attempts at fulfilling the purpose of the average user and taking to task the pro user. We found no reason to root the device as we were happy with both performance as well as the UI (our major reasons for rooting). Although a new tool for the boot-loader unlock is now available and the full root for the device will come out sooner than we expected.

The device comes with a free leather cover and a free screen protector, which are excellent freebies.

There were a few negative aspects to the device and we will list them for easy access

    • The device gets overheated with prolonged use, does not affect usage but gets too hot to hold against the face.
    • The device also has unsteady HSDPA connection which breaks quite frequently
    • The battery is erratic and drains faster when the device is hot (see first)

    [xrr rating=3.25/5 label=”WE RATE THE ARC” imageset=shiny_yellow_star display_as=fraction_stars]
