Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 Sets All-Time Record for the Biggest Entertainment Launch with More than $400 Million in North America and United Kingdom Sales Alone

More Than 6.5 Million Units Sold in U.S. and U.K. in 24 Hours

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Shattering its own day-one sales records, Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced that its highly-anticipated Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch ever with an estimated sell-through of more than $400 million and more than 6.5 million units in North America and the United Kingdom alone in the first 24 hours of its release, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

This marks the third consecutive year that the Call of Duty franchise has set day one launch records across all forms of entertainment, something no other entertainment franchise in any medium has ever accomplished. Last year, in North America and the United Kingdom, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops™ had estimated day-one sell-through of $360 million and in 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, set day-one records with estimated sell through of $310 million, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

On November 8, 2011, millions of fans attended more than 13,000 midnight openings at retail stores around worldwide. According to Microsoft, after just two days, the number of gamers playing simultaneously on Xbox®  Live® set a new peak concurrency record.

“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. “Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”

Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing added, “Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere. I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”

Separately, Activision announced this morning that in support and gratitude for the efforts of American servicemen and women, this Veterans Day it donated $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit, public benefit corporation that seeks to provide job placement and training for veterans. This latest donation will be added to the $2 million that Activision has already donated to the Endowment, which has provided more than $1.5 million in grants and scholarships to veterans’ organizations across the country since it was conceived by Bobby Kotick in November of 2009.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is rated “M” (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Strong Language and is available now for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Windows® PC. Razer, nVidia and Intel have teamed up to create what they call the worlds first “True” gaming laptop.

Dubbed the “Blade”, the laptop is made with an aluminium body that’s only .88″ thick, weighs 3.2 Kgs and houses some pretty mean hardware. It features a 17″ 1920 x 1080 px LED display which is powered by an nVidia GPU and the latest generation Intel Core i7 processor.

The laptop also has a back-lit keyboard as well as Razer’s Switchblade interface which consists of ten programmable tactile keys and an LCD which doubles as a multi touch input and a display for in-game information when the system detects an external mouse being used. Each of the ten buttons can be programmed for in-game commands/actions and they can also be assigned an image which would be displayed on the in-built LCD.

It also features a HD web-cam and is expected to retail for around USD 2800 later in the year.

Microsoft confirms 3D compatibility in Halo, Xbox 360 Remake

Microsoft has finally confirmed 3D gaming for XBox 360. This comes almost a year after Sony added 3D support to their PS3. Joystiq experienced a demo at Gamescom in Germany, and reports that it only works with the game’s updated graphics mode, and that the game’s producer claims the framerate will stay consistent even in 3D. While there are already a number of Xbox 360 games that support 3DTVs.

Epic Games had also announced earlier this month the Gears of War 3 will also support 3D, but this is the first instance of game from Microsoft. Its good news for those already on the 3DTV bandwagon, but not too great for people who don’t want to loose their sight and hemorrhage their brains with excessive 3D.

Computer games have come a long way since the days of Pacman and Mario. In today’s day, all the cool 3D graphics that you see are made up of polygons. Polygons are nothing but flat images that are joined together to create an object in 3D. The higher the number of polygons, the greater the viewing detail.

Game developers have been trying very hard for a number of years to increase the polygon count in the games they make. However, computers face a problem when it comes to increased polygon counts. The higher the number of polygons, the greater processing power it takes to render all those polygons. Its because of this limitation that you will find games that have superb detail on one side of an object, while the other side is just a plain texturized image. Putting a cap on the number of polygons leads to a lot of compromises: You want a super detailed character? No problem, but then your world will look bland.

An Australian company called Euclideon has developed a game engine that does away with polygons and instead replaces them with point clouds that are made up of individual ‘atoms’. So doesn’t increasing the number of objects on screen slow down everything? Well you’d think so but the company says that it has made it work and your computer will make it work too. The company has developed a 1 sq km island using their game engine and each speck of dirt on that island is made up of millions of these ‘atoms’ per cubic inch.

The plus side to this is that the graphics are amazing. Simply put, polygons just cant cope with the kind of quality that the Euclideon ‘atoms’ can create. The curves that are generated with the ‘atoms’ are amazingly smooth and the level of detail is through the roof. You can quite literally see each individual grain of sand. In the next few years, computer games are going to make a huge leap forward in terms of graphics and we’re very exited about this technology and can’t wait for the company to deliver this game engine into the hands of game developers. Watch the video below for a demo of the engine in action:

Sony Playstation Vita Coming to World in October, India next year!

Information of the Playstation Vita’s launch has been around for a couple of days now, but without official word from Sony India we thought it would be fruitless to talk about it.

We were able to get in touch with Sony’s Regional Manager for North India, According to him the official Vita for India may not come until December or January next year. The device is expected to hit the international markets in October, and may also be almost instantly available from unofficial channels.

Taking about the slow Gaming market in India, Mr. Barua said

PlayStation Vita will also be the first dedicated portable gaming console with 3G networking capabilities to hit the Indian market. Sony plans to price the Vita at a similar price when compared to the US variant, The WiFi only Vita will sell for Rs. 11,499/- whereas the 3G version will be priced at Rs. 14,999/-  with a one year warranty (US$ 249/- and 299/- respectively)

Sony partnered with Ericsson to sell the Android based Xperia Play, which was a mobile phone version of the PSP, The phone was an amazing failure in the Indian market.

  • Realm of the Mad God

    Realm of the Mad God

Realm of the Mad God, created for the TIG Assemblee competition, is ‘a massively co-op fantasy adventure’ featuring a remarkably large world to roam and explore (inhabited by thousands of monsters), real-time battling, a full leveling up system, lots of different equipment and magic spells to experiment with and different classes to choose from.

At first look the game reminds us of the 8-bit days of yore. What the game lacks in graphics it definatly makes up for in usability. The game is browser based and its so simple to play, just log in and go. Even though it already has so much content, the game is still being built. When you join, you’ll be placed into the world alongside every other connected player.

A major difference from most games of the genre is that death is permanent. It doesnt matter if your level 1 or level 100. If you die, you loose all progress that you made in the game, and you have to start over. You may get a respectable level, but one tiny slip up and its all gone.

Go and give it a try here.
