  • Google Pixel Unboxing and Hands On

Google Pixel Unboxing and Hands On

Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL leave the Nexus in their dust, defining a new category for Google and their proprietary smartphone. Much like Apple with their iPhone, Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL are made by the company from the ground up. http://fkrt.it/Pd1OjTuuuN

The packaging for the Pixel will be very iconic of Google colours, we are unboxing the Quite Black Google Pixel XL , while the phones are available in three colours (Quite Black, Really Blue, Very Silver) in the US and two colours worldwide the black and silver variants.

The Google Pixel is very well packaged, and the inbox accessories are made of really durable and high quality materials. While the cables have management clips, the earphones have a flat tangle free cord. The Google Pixel has a very HTC/iPhone design scheme, while it feels very close to the HTC 10 in the back, the front with the big chin at the bottom is very similar to an iPhone.

    google-pixel-xl-55

The phone runs on Snapdragon 821 and is optimised heavily with the hardware and the new Android 7.1 Nougat which is extremely snappy. The Pixel XL offers up a gorgeous QHD AMOLED display which has rich colours and deep level of blacks. Android 7.1 is what the Pixel and Pixel XL will have out of the box, and Google assistant works well, but will need deeper integration with Apps in India to work perfectly.

Google Allo and Duo are preinstalled on the Pixel and Pixel XL, and both phones will work on GSM and CDMA, and on GSM you will get 4G with VoLTE.

  • Samsung Gear IconX Review : Good Wireless Earphones

Samsung Gear IconX Review : Good Wireless Earphones

Samsung Gear IconX is the first wireless set of earphones, offering true cord free experience from a big company. But, are they really worth the big price tag, or should you consider something more affordable.

    [section label=”Design”]

    Design and Build

The Gear IconX is built really well, with a good quality outer casing. The earphones offer up splash and dust resistant P2i Nano coating despite having a fairly wide feature set. They should withstand your sweat incase you decide to use these for your active life or sports.

The included wing tips and in ear plugs come in a total of 4 different sizes for a perfect fit and are extremely easy to switch.

The carry case also has a rubberized coating on the outside and is built to survive several drops, and it does not pop open incase you do drop it.

    samsung-gear-icon-x-3

    [section label=”Hardware”]

    Hardware

The Samsung Gear IconX comes with 4GB of inbuilt storage, which can come in handy if you decide to get some music without your phone. Connectivity with your smartphone is via Bluetooth 4.1 (BLE). The Gear IconX also track your fitness via the inbuilt HR sensor and an Accelerometer. The capacitive touch input on both earphones allow for handling and navigating through your music handling calls and listening to the contextual menus.

The Gear IconX come with 2 microphones per earbud, for noise cancellation and audio for phone calls. The Frequency Range is 20~20 kHz, with a Speaker Sensitivity of 89.5 dB ± 3 dB / 1mW and a Speaker Impedance: 16 ohm.

Each earbud has a inbuilt 47 mAh while the outer carrying case has a 315 mAh.

    samsung-gear-icon-x-7

    [section label=”Audio Performance”]

    Performance and Audio

When you setup your Gear IconX with your phone, the audio is usually set to 50% which is optimised to get you a good battery life.

Audio performance is excellent, while music volumes can be extremely high. Low range and Mids are handled extremely well and audio profiles can be customised using the Gear app on your Android phone.

You can also use a single earbud as a regular bluetooth earpiece incase you like to keep it old school and answer your calls like that.

If you go for your run or go about your fitness routine without your phone, the earphones will still track your health info and heartbeat and then sync up with your phone later.

As wireless earphones they have excellent range and sound and thanks to the snug fit the outside noise is easily cut. The ability to long press and listen to ambient sound means you don’t need to constantly pull the earphones out of your ear.

    [section label=”Battery Life”]

    Battery Life

The biggest downfall of the Gear IconX has to be the battery life, if you increase the volume from the default while connected to your phone, you will need to charge the IconX every 60-75 minutes. Which if you are used to listening to music for long periods is a definite negative.

The carry case will charge both your earbuds a total of three extra times. However, if you leave your earphones in the case they will be charged constantly basically draining the battery of the earphones and the case as well. Which means leaving your earphones overnight will kill them, making them impossible to travel with.

    samsung-gear-icon-x-2

    [section label=”Conclusion”]

    Conclusion

The Samsung Gear IconX is the best direction towards a truly wireless music experience, and seems like a better setup than what is expected from the Apple AirPods. However with a 5 hour battery the AirPods have the definite advantage. The Gear IconX will work with iPhones and Windows Phones too if you have those, however, you will get basic bluetooth connectivity and not deep controls and customizations which can be had on Android phones via the Gear App.

The battery life however is a step backwards, and it seems that Samsung rushed into these too early without figuring out real usage scenarios. The poor batteries make it difficult to use these daily, or ever! The battery life is also unwarranted considering the heavy price tag on these.

This is the right approach, however, it’s pre-mature and the battery life is unacceptable, sound quality and volumes are great. The earphones are extremely light and fit well in your ear. The fitness features are also a great add-on.

    Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Unboxing

Xiaomi is yet to launch the Redmi Note 4 in India. However we got an early preview of the device by ordering it from China. The Redmi Note 4 is an update to the Redmi Note 3 launched earlier this year and is expected to hit India in the next few weeks. Xiaomi may launch the phone in India with a Snapdragon chipset due to patent issues, but, we have heard news that they have been resolved. So we might see the Mediatek variant in India after all .

The front houses a 5 MP camera, and the rear a 13 MP shooter with decent colour optimisations. The Redmi Note 4 will come with MiUi 7 However gets a quick update to MiUi 8 once you boot the handset.

For the China variant the price is Rs. 13500 and it can be shipped to India. The phones bought from China will support CDMA, but, when Xiaomi launches in India, the phones will be restricted to GSM, 3G and 4G LTE. The phone runs on a Deca Core Mediatek Helio X20 Chipset and has a whopping 4100 mAh battery.

OnePlus 3 Soft Gold Variant Unboxing and Hands On

OnePlus 3 in the soft gold variant just went on sale for a price of Rs. 27999. The phone virtually identical to the OnePlus 3 launched a few months back features a subtle Gold colour, hence the name Soft Gold. Check out our video of the phone below.

  • Hands on with the Xperia XZ

Hands on with the Xperia XZ

The minute you put your hands on the Sony Xperia XZ you are reminded of the premium feel of the Xperia Z series phones. The Xperia XZ is a flagship in the true sense and Sony has launched it as a replacement of the Xperia Z5 which is a good thing.

The in-hand feel of the handset is brilliant thanks to the use of the new material called Alkaleido, which allows the phone to be a lot more robust than traditional aluminium chassis’ and is less prone to damage.

    sony-xperia-xz-9

The premium build handset from Sony also features IP68 water resistance much like the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Note 7 and is also completely sand proof. The Sony Xperia XZ is the only smartphone from the company launched this year with that certification.

    sony-xperia-xz-7

The display on the Sony Xperia XZ is just a Full HD 1920 x 1080px resolution display but has great colour and brightness and is easily viewable indoors and outdoors. The viewing angles on the screen are great too.

The phone runs Android 6.0.1 with a beta software at the moment so we did see some glitches and issues with the software builds. Sony has assured that the final retail units will come with a finished user interface.

    sony-xperia-xz-6

The camera which is the hero features 5 axis image stabalization and 4k video recording. You also get subject tracking and predictive autofocus, which works great. However, getting around the camera menu and UI is a little mind boggling and to shoot 4k video you need to jump into a specific app.

Hopefully Sony updates the camera software in a coming update, because it needs much work to leverage the many features that this great camera hardware has. Sony has cleaned up the UI to quite an extent and you can disable the non wanted apps from the UI. The overall software seems snappy.

Battery is a low 2900 mAh, however bundled with quick charge 3.0 so that you can easily get a few hours of talk time in 10-15 minutes of charging via the USB Type-C port. The phone works over 4G on both SIM-cards and has VoLTE, we however were not able to test it just as yet.

    sony-xperia-xz-16

All three colours of the Xperia XZ look great and feel great in the hand, the back is easy to wipe clean and the front houses a curved Gorilla Glass 4 which will deliver the needed frontal protection.

While the iPhone is available in five colours the Matte Black or just “black” is our favourite, although the new “Jet Black” colour which is an extremely glossy polished black finish seems to be a crowd pleaser, and Apple may not launch it in India due to stock limitations.

  • 10 Interesting Facts You Should Know About The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

10 Interesting Facts You Should Know About The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

While Apple has launched the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and globally pre-orders are off the charts. Enough that, deliveries for phones have been pushed back into November in some cases.

Here are somethings you should know.

    1. Price

Apple has launched the iPhone 7 in the United States for a price of $ 649 which roughly translates to Rs. 43000. While Apple has not officially announced the price of the iPhone in India the phone will launch for a price between Rs. 49000 and Rs. 53000 according to our sources close to launch.

    2. Launch

While in most countries Apple is launching the iPhone on the 16th of September, and like mentioned above pre-orders that started on the 9th are off the charts. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will launch in India on the 7th of October. Will they be available immediately? We are unclear on that as for the moment.

    3. Variants

Apple will launch all variants of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in India, however it is likely that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will not be available in the Jet Black Color at the time of India launch.

    Jet Black
    Jet Black

    4. CDMA or GSM

India will get the GSM only variant which does support VoLTE and all 4G networks in India. However, there is a CDMA variant of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, which works on both CDMA and GSM Networks. If you want that you either need to get the US : Verizon and Sprint variant (unlocked) or buy the iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus in Puerto Rico, Hong Kong or China.

    5. Hardware and Cameras

Apple’s A10 fusion chipset brings some promise in terms of hardware boost. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus automatically become the most powerful iPhones, however, the two little cores that will help save up battery will help a great deal to extend usage time of these phones.

The iPhone 7 gets some improvements to the camera and the ability to read wide color. The iPhone 7 Plus on the other hand, gets a dual sensor camera setup. This will allow live zoom without the need of motors. Interesting take on the dual camera setup, especially since Huawei made a dual lens camera for the P9 where one shoots Monochrome, while LG made a camera setup with dual resolution cameras an 8MP and 16 MP on the LG V20

    6. RAM

The iPhone 7 packs 2 GB of RAM whereas the bigger iPhone 7 plus has 3 GB of ram according to a listing on benchmarking site Geekbench. The listing also shows that the performance of the Single core is almost double that of the Galaxy Note 7.geekbench iphone 7

    7. Display

While the world was expecting this, Apple has not upped the display on the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 plus and seem to be saving that upgrade for the iPhone 7s. The new iPhones do support a wide color format seen on cinema displays. So a little improvement, but a big disappointment on the resolution.

    8. Batteries

It is expected that Apple has not improved or changed the batteries in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus when compared to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, however changes in the other hardware like power saving chipsets and efficient speakers and displays, should match the performance if not improve the battery life.iPhone batteries

    9. Audio and Speakers

For the fist timer Apple,  the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus feature stereo speakers. The combination although a little strange is similar to what we saw with the HTC 10. One speaker points down in the traditional format whereas the other other sits in the earpiece. Apple claims it boosts the sound by more than double. Either way, louder speakers on the iPhones are a huge welcome.

By removing the headphone jack there are certain issues that will need to be faced by consumers. Wireless earphone/headphones are not the best companions for long haul journeys. While travelling over 15 hours, you will need to not only charge your phone multiple times but also the headphones/earphones. Typically, Beats Studio 2.0 wireless run 10-14 hours on battery but over 20 hours when connected with the 3.5 mm audio cable.

Possible the best solution would have been to include two Lightning connectors, but that wouldn’t work for design. So for now mostly everyone who buys the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is stuck on this compromise.

    10. iOS 10

iOS 10 is one of the major factors of performance improvements on the iPhone. With iOS 10 running on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus we are already seeing more performance and battery life improvements, the “Back to” button is more refined and does not cover up the WiFi Or Signal bars. The new design features are excellent, including the new Apple Music app. The control centre is cleaner and easy to use and since the music sits separately.

iOS 10 is not limited to the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone all the way back to iPhone 5 will get the iOS 10 update.

Should you hold off buying ?

The question that most iPhone users will ask is whether they should hold of buying the iPhone 7 and wait for the iPhone 7s. In its usual cycle Apple keeps the hardware improvements for the iPhones in the “s” variants, like the iPhone 6s. However, this time around the iPhone 7 is a balanced upgrade, a bit of design change and a lot of hardware change. The problem with waiting is that technology is forever evolving and next year your question might change to “Should i wait for the iPhone 8”.

So if you want it buy one now, else, you can always opt for more options from the Android world.

Unboxing And Hands On With The Samsung Galaxy Note 7

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 amid battery explosion controversy and the global recall has left a bad taste in the buyers mouth. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is an amazing phone (minus the fact that it might blow up) and till date has been rated as the best Android smartphone only to succeed the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will make it’s comeback once the company has managed to fix this problem, till then we decided to unbox the stealthy all black Galaxy Note 7 Duos (dual sim variant). The dual-SIM phone is not the variant that will launch in markets like India, however, the specifications and features remain identical (apart from the dual-SIM option).

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 comes in a packaging just like the S7 and S7 Edge, all black outer cover with bold blue lettering. Inside the box you will get

The Black Onyx colour we unboxed has a matter metal frame and all back rear and front, extremely stealthy to look at. The front and back both are fingerprint magnets and you will constantly find yourself wiping the phone. that okay because both the front and back come with Gorilla Glass 5 and will offer up a good amount of protection for the Galaxy Note 7.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has a pretty quick initial setup and the iris scanner is unbelievably easy to setup and really practical to use. It is fast and efficient and unlocks the phone in mere seconds.

The cameras on the Note 7 are identical to the S7 and S7 edge, although seem to focus faster and more effectively. The rear camera captures 4k video at 30fps and Slow mo 720p video at 240fps.

The Galaxy Note 7 is iP68 rated and we took it for a test run in the sink. Check out the unboxing video and leave your questions and suggestions for review below.
