21-inch iMac Teardown Shows Dual Mics, Replaceable RAM & Glued On LCD

    imac

iFixit has released a comprehensive teardown of Apple’s new 21.5″ iMac, scoring it as a 3 out of 10 (down from 7 last year).

The new iMac, with its ultra slim bezel proved to be a disappointment to the iFixit team, because both the glass and the LCD are glued to the iMac frame with strong adhesive, which negatively impacts repairability.
The late 2012 iMac 21.5? — code-named EMC 2544 — is an exercise in disappointment for us. We were quite worried when we saw that super-thin bezel during Apple’s keynote, and unfortunately we were correct: the glass and LCD are now glued to the iMac’s frame with incredibly strong adhesive. Gone are the lovely magnets that held the glass in place in iMacs of yesteryear.
The logic board (Apple’s name for its motherboard) appears to contain both the Ivy Bridge i5 and the GPU, unlike previous iMacs, which used a separate MXM daughterboard for their GPU. The computer’s expansion ports are mounted directly onto the logic board—the SD card slot, headphone jack, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports, and a gigabit Ethernet port. As Apple has said, there is no Firewire port.

    imac

In good news, RAM, hard drive and CPU are all possible to replace, should things go wrong or should users want to upgrade their memory or internal storage. The bad news, though, is that unlike on previous generation iMac, none of these pieces are easily accessible. iMacs used to at least have user-accessible RAM trays on the underside of their face, which actually made it really easy to swap out upgrades. Now, while it’s still not soldered to the motherboard like on the latest Retina MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs, getting at the RAM requires removing the screen, and also behind the logic board, meaning you’ll have to essentially take the iMac completely apart to change things up.

He bought the E350 back in July 2011 along with Mercedes Benz Road Side Assistance Program. According to Kumud, problems with his new E Class started in Sep 2011. Ever since he has been trying to fix his car, but every time he got his car fixed, a new fault appeared. His car is still not fixed and has problems in two of the wheels.

  • Google Play Revenues Leap 311% In 2012, But iOS Apps Still More Profitable

Google Play Revenues Leap 311% In 2012, But iOS Apps Still More Profitable

    google

Google Play seems to be going on one heck of a growth spurt. According to new stats, the Android app store is catching up to iOS fast.

Even though the Apple App Store is four times more profitable than Google Play, iOS can’t match Android’s revenue growth of 311 percent since January and 17.9 percent in the last month. These numbers are misleading, however, since Google started the year with next to nothing in its Play Store coffers, while Apple had already earned $4 billion from App Store revenue.

Most app revenue, on both platforms, unsurprisingly came from game publishers. Zynga and EA, along with Gameloft and Halfbrick (makers of Fruit Ninja) were among the top 10, but Japan and Korean owned eight of the top ten places for app revenue sorted by publisher on Google Play. iOS was more Western-focused, with Electronic Arts leading the way, though with over 950 titles on the App Store their lead is anything but shocking.

Though Apple still outstrips Google in terms of free app downloads by 10%, it’s interesting to see developers such as Go Launcher, makers of the insanely popular launcher alternative for Android, sitting at number four, ahead of big names like Twitter, Skype and WhatsApp.

Overall, the situation doesn’t look as grim for Google as it did a year ago. Users are paying for apps, although most are games, and total numbers of downloads are approaching App Store territory quickly. People are beginning to understand that Google has built itself a versatile and potentially profitable portal for app developers, and users are beginning to see the value in investing their money into it.

New Video Gives A Closer Look At The BlackBerry 10 Camera Time Shift Feature

    blackberry 10

One of the upcoming features that RIM has embedded into the BlackBerry 10 devices is Time Shift (powered by Scalado). This gives users the ability to snap multiple pictures and easily adjust the image to make it perfect – no more closed eye syndrome. RIM first showed this off at BlackBerry World 2012 and wowed the crowd.

In a video today, RIM has posted a deeper look into Time Shift, specifically noting that the upcoming BB10 devices will come with “a great camera that allows you to take photos, full HD video. As well as a camera that solves some of the problems that you probably encounter everyday when you use a camera to take pictures.” Arun Kumar, Senior Product Manager, Multimedia at BlackBerry, said that with Time Shift you can literally go forward and reverse “in time” to make the perfect picture. You’ll be able to adjust multiple faces and basically choose a new set of eyes or change the smile. It’s a pretty cool feature and will be a solid addition to the overall BB10 experience.

Kumar also gave a bit more insight into the Blackberry 10 multimedia experience as he states that you’ll have the option to “personalize” the pictures or videos you capture, then easily sharing “your life stories with others.” This is something that has popped up online over the past number of months. Within Blackberry 10, RIM will include a picture editor capabilities that is a similar experience to Instagram.

RIM will unveil their new BlackBerry 10 OS and the two new BlackBerry 10 smartphones on January 30th, 2013. For now, check out the video of Time Shift below.

Facebook Rolls Out ‘Photo Sync’; Automatically Upload 2GB of Photos

    facebook

After expanding the test to iOS users last week, Facebook has officially launched Photo Sync for both Android and iOS devices. Photo Sync allows users to enable automatic uploading of any photos they take with their mobile device straight to Facebook. No manual uploading, no hassle. Just seamless photo uploading.

Unlike Google+, the app will not proceed with the uploads unless you explicitly open the app, and you can choose whether to do so on 3G/LTE or only over WiFi.
“Today we’re excited to roll out photo sync, which makes it easier to share photos. With this feature, photos from your phone sync automatically to a private album on the web. When you want to share these photos, just pick and post your favorites,” says Facebook. “We began testing photo sync in August and will continue to make it available to more people.”
The feature, titled Photo Sync, uploads photos to a private folder, but can easily be made shared to your timeline with a couple taps.

Photo Sync appears to have been included in the mobile apps already; Facebook merely flipped a switch in the backend to turn it on. While there are many services vying for the same space — Google+ and Dropbox are notable examples — Facebook clearly has the market share lead to make this feature stick.

The feature is rolling out in the coming days, so if you don’t see it in your Facebook app settings, try again in a little bit.

  • Apple iTunes Remote App Update: New Interface, New Features

Apple iTunes Remote App Update: New Interface, New Features

    itunes

Shortly after releasing iTunes 11 this morning, Apple has released an update to its Remote app for iOS with a revamped iPad interface that looks like the desktop app. The app also gets support for Up Next, the new song queuing system in iTunes.

Improved search is also on the docket for this version as well. The new app looks quite nice, and fits in thematically with iTunes 11 much more closely.

With version 3.0, Remote for iOS is meant to work better with iTunes 11, which has been released today for Mac and PC. The new iTunes in the Cloud service, which includes better iCloud and iTunes Match support, allows users to stream, rather than download, songs from Apple’s servers. Remote can also operate as a physical cursor for your Apple TV, allowing you to enter text and numbers on your phone or tablet, both of which have real (virtual) keyboards, rather than the time-consuming click-based method on the TV itself.

Remote can also function as an AirPlay intermediary, allowing you to push certain streams to different AirPlay-connected speakers or devices. If you’re entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, it all sounds awfully handy.
