  • NOW : Airbags in cellphones

    NOW : Airbags in cellphones

Amazon CEO has applied for a patent that is quite a shocker, or shock preventer. The latest patent may seem ridiculous at first, but if implemented may actually turn out to be a great idea.

The patent calls for a sensor and airbags built within the mobile device. The sensor will sense the falling motion of the device and deploy airbags before it hits the ground.  There is also the inclusion of springs and air streams to orient the device along the airbag.

A technology like this seems practically impossible, but also did a touch screen phone that does everything a phone does today.

  • Nokia partners with China Mobile for Windows Phone 7 Devices

Nokia partners with China Mobile for Windows Phone 7 Devices

Nokia has started to gather partners for its windows phone 7 devices, the first being China Mobile.

At a speech in Beijing last week, Nokia executive VP Colin Giles announced the company would be partnering with China Mobile to launch Windows Phone handsets in China—the first time Nokia has announced a carrier partner for the new devices.

China mobile is also the countries largest mobile service provider with over 600 million subscribers that account for about two-third of China’s total mobile phone market. To operate on China Mobile’s 3G network, the phones will have to use the TD-SCDMA standard, meaning Nokia Windows Phone devices launching in China will not operate on networks of other carriers around the world.

Despite many other challengers, Nokia remains the top handset maker in the Chinese and Asian market, although it is facing challenges from companies like ZTE and Huawei.

Nokia plans to bring out the first WP7 devices next month, along with several to follow suit.

Breaking: Google will Acquire Motorola Mobility : SuperPower the Android Devices

Holy Acquisitions Batman: Here is some happy freedom news, Google has announced that it will Acquire Motorola Mobility to supercharge the Android Stratosphere. Google calls it Motorola’s complete dedication to the Android Platform, we call it US$56 Million in net losses last quarter. Either way we can see a whole new level of smartphone rise now that the company who makes the OS will also make the hardware. Reminds us of a certain Fruit Computer giant that forayed into Mobile phones in 2007. This should seriously heat up the competition and take it to the next level.

The take over will involve exchanges of moolah in surplus of about $12.5 billion,

2012 is going to be the year of mobile innovation, we can almost feel it, Read the official announcement below.:

Supercharging Android: Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

    8/15/2011 04:35:00 AM
Since its launch in November 2007, Android has not only dramatically increased consumer choice but also improved the entire mobile experience for users. Today, more than 150 million Android devices have been activated worldwide—with over 550,000 devices now lit up every day—through a network of about 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers in 123 countries. Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed toacquire Motorola

Motorola has a history of over 80 years of innovation in communications technology and products, and in the development of intellectual property, which have helped drive the remarkable revolution in mobile computing we are all enjoying today. Its many industry milestones include the introduction of the world’s first portable cell phone nearly 30 years ago, and the StarTAC—the smallest and lightest phone on earth at time of launch. In 2007, Motorola was a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance that worked to make Android the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. I have loved my Motorola phones from the StarTAC era up to the current DROIDs.

In 2008, Motorola bet big on Android as the sole operating system across all of its smartphone devices. It was a smart bet and we’re thrilled at the success they’ve achieved so far. We believe that their mobile business is on an upward trajectory and poised for explosive growth.

Motorola is also a market leader in the home devices and video solutions business. With the transition to Internet Protocol, we are excited to work together with Motorola and the industry to support our partners and cooperate with them to accelerate innovation in this space.

Motorola’s total commitment to Android in mobile devices is one of many reasons that there is a natural fit between our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers everywhere.

This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences.

We recently explained how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android. The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to “protect competition and innovation in the open source software community” and it is currently looking into the results of the Nortel auction. Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.

The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition and offer consumers accelerating innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences. I am confident that these great experiences will create huge value for shareholders.

I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.

  • Goodyear talks Self Inflating tires, Brings the Future closer

Goodyear talks Self Inflating tires, Brings the Future closer

Goodyear has been researching Air- Maintenance Technology (AMT) tires with built-in pumps to keep themselves at the perfect pressure. According to research slightly under-inflated tires can reduce overall mileage by 3.3 percent. The U.S. department of Energy has granted goodyear with US$ 1.5 million for researching these tires for commercial uses in Trucks and Big Rigs. Whereas a consumer version is being developed in Goodyears main research and invention lab in Luxembourg.

“While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tire itself as it rolls down the road. A tire that can maintain its own inflation is something drivers have wanted for many years. Goodyear has taken on this challenge and the progress we have made is very encouraging. This will become the kind of technological breakthrough that people will wonder how they ever lived without.

While similar in concept, there are significant differences in AMT systems for consumer and commercial tires. The tangible support from both the U.S. and Luxembourg governments underscores the value of these projects and the many positive benefits they can provide drivers around the world.”

Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear senior vice president and chief technical officer.

A technology like this would do wonders in our country, where more leaks and low tire pressure is one of the biggest reasons for tire loss.

New Goodyear Innovation Could Make Tire Pumps Obsolete
Government Grants to Help Quicken Development

AKRON, Ohio, August 11, 2011 – The days of manually adding air to under-inflated tires could be a distant memory thanks to a new innovation under development in laboratories at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

Keeping tires properly inflated doesn’t just eliminate the practice of checking a tire’s air pressure and finding a tire pump and gauge that works. It also can mean real savings at the fuel pump.

Whether you drive a passenger vehicle or a commercial truck, underinflated tires result in between a 2.5 percent and 3.3 percent decrease in fuel mileage, according to government and industry research. At today’s prices, that translates to about 12 cents per gallon at the pump.

Properly inflated tires also result in lower emissions, longer tire life, enhanced safety and improved vehicle performance.

Goodyear’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT), will enable tires to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics. All components of the AMT system, including the miniaturized pump, will be fully contained within the tire.

“While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tire itself as it rolls down the road,” said Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear senior vice president and chief technical officer.

“A tire that can maintain its own inflation is something drivers have wanted for many years. Goodyear has taken on this challenge and the progress we have made is very encouraging,” said Kihn. “This will become the kind of technological breakthrough that people will wonder how they ever lived without.”

Goodyear did not provide an estimate as to when this technology would be available at tire retailers, but said the timetable would be accelerated due to recent government research grants in United States and European Union.

The United States Department of Energy’s Office of Vehicle Technology Wednesday announced it has awarded a $1.5 million grant for research, development and demonstration of the AMT system for commercial truck tires. The grant will be administered by the National Energy Technology Laboratory and work will be conducted at Goodyear’s Innovation Center in Akron, Ohio.

In July, Goodyear successfully applied for a grant from the Luxemburg government for research and development of an AMT system for consumer tires. That work will be conducted at Goodyear’s Innovation Center in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg.

“While similar in concept, there are significant differences in AMT systems for consumer and commercial tires,” said Kihn. “The tangible support from both the U.S. and Luxembourg governments underscores the value of these projects and the many positive benefits they can provide drivers around the world.”

In addition, The DOE’s Office of Vehicle Technology today also announced that it will award a $1.5 million grant for a joint project between PPG Industries and Goodyear to improve the rolling resistance and fuel efficiency of tires. The project’s objective is to increase average fuel efficiency of passenger vehicle fleets through use of new tread and inner liner technologies.

“Advanced technologies that are invisible to the human eye – like those we are working on with PPG – will help to dramatically improve fuel efficiency of tires while maintaining other important qualities such as traction and tread-life,” said Kihn.

STAMFORD, Conn., July 20, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — The number one dental professional recommended power toothbrush brand, Philips Sonicare, is leveraging years of science-based research to expand its product portfolio beyond power toothbrushing for the first time. Last night, Sonicare unveiled its new AirFloss against a fitting backdrop at the New York City Museum of Art and Design. A proof point to Sonicare’s commitment to develop meaningful innovation, AirFloss is a first-in-class flossing device that effectively cleans between teeth using microbursts of air and water droplets that remove more plaque that brushing alone. Also on display at the event was the new Sonicare DiamondClean power toothbrush.

“Philips Sonicare has taken innovation to a whole new level with AirFloss and DiamondClean,” remarked Dr. Bill Dorfman, DDS, who hosted the event and has appeared on TV shows such as Extreme Makeover and The Doctors. “As an innovator and entrepreneur, I draw inspiration from brands that use both science and consumer insights to develop new technologies that meet people’s needs, and ultimately, improve their lives.”

    Sonicare AirFloss

Philips Sonicare AirFloss is a breakthrough interproximal cleaning device that provides people with an easy and effective way to clean in-between their teeth, without the hassle and mess of string floss.

“Research has shown that there are many barriers that prevent people from flossing regularly, from time and convenience, to dexterity,” said Erik Hollander, Sr. Marketing Director at Philips Consumer Lifestyle. “AirFloss was designed to make flossing easier and less time-consuming, and the oral health benefits are indisputable.”

According to a survey conducted on behalf of Philips Sonicare, one out of two Americans admit they do not floss as much as they should, and with 80 percent of Americans suffering from some form of periodontal disease(1), there is significant room for improvement.

With this insight in mind, Philips Sonicare created AirFloss to simplify this every day task, and during Philips’ consumer testing, 86 percent of users found it easier to use than string floss(2). Sonicare AirFloss was also designed to maximize plaque removal and improve gum health. Studies found that it is clinically proven to remove up to 99 percent more plaque in-between teeth than brushing with a manual toothbrush alone(3).

Sonicare AirFloss uses microburst technology, a rapid burst of air and water droplets, to push plaque and bacteria from in between teeth. The microburst is directed using a nozzle guidance tip that ensures targeted cleaning between teeth, and the point and click one-button operation cleans the entire mouth with less than one teaspoon of water in less than a minute. It has an ergonomically designed handle and angled nozzle to access all areas of the mouth and its cordless, rechargeable handle fits on the same charger as the Sonicare FlexCare+.

Consumers can win a Philips Sonicare AirFloss by visiting www.Facebook.com/PhilipsSonicare and taking the quiz on the “Love Sonicare” tab.

    Sonicare DiamondClean

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean takes power toothbrushing to its most sophisticated level yet. It harnesses Philips Sonicare’s patented sonic technology to produce a powerful dynamic cleaning action for a difference that users can see and feel. DiamondClean is gentler on teeth and gums than a manual toothbrush, helping to keep teeth stronger and healthier for longer.

DiamondClean is clinically proven to remove up to 100 percent of plaque from hard-to- reach places than a manual toothbrush and to improve gum health in just two weeks(4). It is also clinically proven to whiten teeth in one week and protect against gum irritation and recession to help reduce sensitivity(5).

With five brushing modes, users can customize their brushing experience to their needs, while DiamondClean delivers a “unique whole mouth clean” feeling. The modes include Clean, White, Polish, Gum Care and Sensitive.

Sonicare DiamondClean brush heads have a new diamond-cut shape for a more efficient brushing experience, with 44 percent more bristles than the standard Philips Sonicare ProResults brush heads. It also features the latest in inductive technology to charge the toothbrush in a sleek glass cup that doubles as a drinking glass and comes with a travel case that allows for easy charging via USB port.
