Amazon has launched the first ever waterproof Kindle E-Book reader. The new Kindle is a new version of the Oasis, which was launched last year and it has IPX8 waterproof reading. The Kindle Oasis is up for pre-orders in India, and will start shipping from the week of November 13. The new Kindle Oasis is priced at Rs 21999 for the 8GB variant and Rs 28999 for the 32GB variant (Wi-Fi + free 3G).
The new updated model of the Oasis has a six-week battery life and a slightly larger 7 inch screen with a 300 ppi. Amazon claims that the new display is brighter than the one on last year’s Oasis. Unlike last year’s Kindle Oasis, which used a magnetic case you attached to the tablet to extend its battery life, the new Oasis relies entirely on its built-in battery. It has a similar physical design, with one thicker side that tapers down on the other side, for one-handed reading. There are physical page-turn buttons, and the touchscreen page-turn option. Amazon says it’s worked on both the hardware and software side of things to make page-turning feel faster.
The new e-reader also has Bluetooth and has the Audible app built-in. This means that you can stream audio books to wireless headphones or speakers. Amazon also unveiled a new cover for the new Kindle Oasis, which can be transformed into a stand. Water-safe fabric covers are priced at Rs 2999, and are available in Indigo, Charcoal and Sandstone colours, while premium leather covers are priced at Rs 3999, and available in Black and Merlot colours.
E-Book readers are an excellent tool for the book lovers or as they are called in literary terms, bibliophiles. These tablet devices offer better book reading experience to the readers in comparison to the displays of conventional tablets. The E-ink display is easy to the eyes and gives a more natural look to the digital files. Amazon’s Kindle is the most prominent of all readers, and its has been in India for quite some time now. Amazon has now extended its Kindle portfolio in India with the introduction of the Kindle Voyage.
Kindle Voyage is thinner than all its predecessors. It has a 300 PPI display which is claimed to have the highest resolution, contrast, and brightness till date. This Kindle comes with a new ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the display depending on the environment. So suppose you are reading in your room in the dark. The device will lower the brightness as your eyes get accustomed to the light.
To give a natural book reading experience, the Kindle has haptic actuator which create advanced vibrations when a page is turned. You can browse through Amazon’s massive repository of books at the Kindle store and get your bibliophile on.
Kindle Voyage is available in two variants; the Wi-Fi-only Kindle Voyage is priced at Rs. 16,499 whereas the Wi-Fi + 3G version is priced at Rs. 20,499.
Amazon.com Inc is having a press conference on 6 September near Los Angeles, said an invitation sent out on Thursday by the world’s largest Internet retailer. Rumours are rife that the company will use the event to unveil its new Kindle Fire tablet, which is expected to see a release in the UK later this year.
While mooted specifications are still few and far between, there are whispers that the Amazon Kindle Fire could feature a larger 10in screen and run a heavily tweaked version of Android. It is also expected to come with a front-facing video calling camera plus microUSB and microHDMI ports.
Amazon launched its first tablet, the seven-inch Kindle Fire, in September 2011, its first foray into a market that is still dominated by Apple Inc’s iPad. Since then, Google Inc has launched a seven-inch tablet called Nexus 7, which has been selling well.
Amazon has launched the Kindle e-reader as well as the Kindle e-book store in India. The device – earlier generation non-touch e-reader – will be available at the Chroma retail outlets across the country at a price of Rs 6,999.
That Kindle model is the entry-level, non-touch-screen Kindle, which sells for $79 in the U.S. in a “Special Offers” ad-supported version. The Kindle sold in India will not be ad-supported.
Amazon says the India Kindle Store offers over one million books — now available for India customers priced in Indian Rupees (INR) — including 70 of 100 Nielsen Bestsellers, and has the “lowest prices of any e-bookstore in India.”
Along with those Nielsen Bestsellers, Amazon is serving up range of Indian authors, including Chetan Bhagat, Ashwin Sanghi, Ravinder Singh and Amish Tripathi. Additionally, Amazon has also launched Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) for independent authors and publishers in India. With the country having an estimated population of 1.2 billion people, the store should fill up quickly with self-published titles and Amazon is already offering such Kindle exclusives as “Love, Life and a Beer Can” by Prashant Sharma, and “Reality Bites; a not so innocent Love Story” by Anurag Anand (as well as over one million free classics).
The UK’s biggest book retailer Amazon now sells more ebooks than hardbacks and paperbacks combined, the company has said. For every 100 print books sold through the site, Amazon said it sold 114 titles for its Kindle e-reader device.
It added that the average Kindle owner bought up to four times more books than they did before owning the device.
The strong figures have been boosted by titles such as multi-million selling erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey. The book has sold more than 31 million copies worldwide, with two million ebooks of the title selling in less than four months.
The figures do not take into account ebook sales on other platforms, such as Apple’s iBooks or the website for bookseller Waterstones.
Amazon’s figures have also been boosted by a surge in popularity for self-publishing. The company said there had been a 400% increase in authors using Kindle Direct Publishing since summer 2011.
Among them were some of the site’s bestsellers. British author Kerry Wilkinson is one of the world’s most successful self-published authors. He has sold more than 300,000 copies of his work in the past year.
With print sales, however, Amazon faces competition from many big, established retailers.
“To really judge the state of the ebook market, we need proper sales data so that we can compare across the board,” he wrote.
Jonathan Ruppin, web editor for bookseller Foyles, said it is a trend the book industry must adapt to deal with.
“The proportion of sales that are taken up by ebooks will continue to increase,” he told the BBC.
The figures were released as Amazon marked the two-year anniversary of the Kindle’s release in the UK.
“Customers in the UK are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books, even as our print business continues to grow,” said Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice-president of Kindle in Europe.
“As a result of the success of Kindle, we’re selling more books than ever before on behalf of authors and publishers.
“And thanks to Kindle Direct Publishing, thousands of self-published authors have also been given an outlet to share their work with the millions of Kindle readers worldwide.”
However, despite the e-reader’s popularity, the company is still yet to announce plans to sell the Kindle Fire – a tablet computer – in the UK, despite it being on sale for over eight months.
The numbers are in, Amazon has sold over 4 Million Amazon Kindles this Holiday season including global shipments and including shipments to countries ilk India and China. The company also noted that its #1 and #4 best-selling eBooks released this year were published by independent authors through its Kindle Direct Publishing platform.
We are grateful to our customers worldwide for making this the best holiday ever for Kindle, And in a huge milestone for independent publishing, we’d also like to congratulate Darcie Chan, the author of ‘The Mill River Recluse,’ and Chris Culver, the author of ‘The Abbey,’ for writing two of the best-selling Kindle books of the year.”

Businesses Selling on Amazon
2011 was also a record-breaking holiday season for businesses that sell on Amazon. Third-party sellers experienced record holiday growth: the number of sellers who exceeded $5,000 in sales during the holiday season increased 44 percent year-over-year. For the year, businesses on Amazon sold hundreds of millions of units worth billions of dollars worldwide.
Scharf Industries, an office supplies and electronics provider, increased its sales on Amazon by over 500 percent this holiday season compared with last holiday season.
“We greatly value the cooperation that we have developed with Amazon,” said Andrew D. Scharf, CMO of Scharf Industries. “They have provided us with the tools necessary to grow our business in a rapid and efficient manner.”
Ken Reiss, the owner of Reiss Innovations, LLC, started with one Amazon Webstore, selling five to 10 mouse pads for the year. Six years later he has a successful eCommerce business, selling through multiple Amazon Webstores. Just this year alone, Reiss saw a 21 percent increase in sales compared with the holiday season last year. He has also increased the number of product listings by 50 percent over 2010 and recently extended his business to Canada.
According to Reiss, one of the most beneficial aspects of his relationship with Amazon is that “It allows me to scale in efficiency. I can devote my time to building vendor relations and growing my inventory, rather than worrying about logistical aspects, such as shipping products.” Reiss currently stores 90 percent of his inventory in Amazon’s warehouses, up from 75 percent last year.

By January 2011, she had 1,300 products listed in FBA. That number has now grown to 7,800 products by November 2011. During that same time period, the company’s sales increased by 34 percent.

Expected? perhaps not. While investment companies and strategy officials were busy down ranking the Amazon fire tablet. Amazon seems to have pulled a Witwicky with the results of first day preorders. The company has reportedly snagged orders over 95,000 for a device that they are yet to start selling.
While playing the numbers game isn’t safe in the tablet scenario, RIM sold a total of 200,000 Playbooks, Apple on the other hand sold over 300,000 on the day of order commencement. So being able to sell 100,000 of a tablet that is priced at 199$ is not a difficult task to do.
Amazon has also announced today its plans to launch a Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet, the device will have a 7 inch multitouch display with Amazon Silk Graphics. Cloud-Accelerated Web Browser – “Amazon Silk”
The Kindle Fire web browser Amazon Silk introduces a radical new paradigm – a “split browser” architecture that accelerates the power of the mobile device hardware by using the computing speed and power of the Amazon Web Services Cloud. The Silk browser software resides both on Kindle Fire and on the massive server fleet that comprises the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). With each page request, Silk dynamically determines a division of labor between the mobile hardware and Amazon EC2 (i.e. which browser sub-components run where) that takes into consideration factors like network conditions, page complexity, and cached content. The result is a faster web browsing experience, and it’s available exclusively on Kindle Fire. Additional technical details are available in the Amazon Silk press release, released today at www.amazon.com/pr. To see a video about Amazon Silk go to www.amazon.com/silk.
Simple and Easy-To-Use
Amazon designed the Kindle Fire user interface from the ground up to make it easier than ever to purchase, manage, and enjoy your digital content. Just like with Kindle e-readers, Kindle Fire comes automatically pre-registered to your Amazon.com account so you can immediately start enjoying your digital content purchased from Amazon or shop for new content. All of your digital content is instantly available to enjoy and manage with a simple, consistent experience across all content types.
Free Cloud Storage
Just like Kindle e-readers, Kindle Fire offers free storage for all your Amazon digital content in the Amazon Cloud. Amazon digital content is automatically backed up for free in the Amazon Cloud’s Worry-Free Archive where it’s available for re-downloading anytime.
Amazon Whispersync Now for Movies & TV Too
Just like Kindle e-readers, Kindle Fire uses Amazon’s popular Whispersync technology to automatically synchronize your Kindle library, last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across the widest range of devices and platforms. With the introduction of Kindle Fire, Amazon is expanding this technology to include video. Start streaming a movie on your Kindle Fire, and when you get home, you can resume streaming right where you left off on your TV – avoid the frustration of needing to find your spot.
Easy to Hold in One Hand
Just like Kindle e-readers, Kindle Fire was designed to disappear so you can lose yourself in the content. Weighing in at just 14.6 ounces, Kindle Fire is small and light enough to hold in just one hand and carry everywhere you go. The lightweight, compact design makes Kindle Fire perfect for web browsing, playing games, reading and shopping on-the-go.
Brilliant Color Touchscreen
Content comes alive in rich color on a 7-inch full color LCD touchscreen that delivers 16 million colors in high resolution and 169 pixels per inch. Kindle Fire uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology – similar technology as used on the iPad, for an extra-wide viewing angle – perfect for sharing your screen with others. In addition, the Kindle Fire display is chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, which means it is incredibly durable and will stand up to accidental bumps and scrapes.
Fast, Powerful Dual-Core Processor
Kindle Fire features a state-of-the-art dual-core processor for fast, powerful performance. Stream music while browsing the web or read books while downloading videos.
Free Month of Amazon Prime
Right out of the box, Kindle Fire users will experience the benefits that millions of Amazon Prime members already enjoy – unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of over 11,000 movies and TV shows with Prime Instant Video and the convenience of Free Two-Day Shipping on millions of items from Amazon.com.

Amazon has bought several domains related to the Kindle, including KindleAir.com, Kindlesocialnetwork.com and Kindlesocianetworking.com. The Kindle Air could be the next version of the Amazon kindle, possibly the one with a color E-ink display.
The name is pretty evident of the fact that the company is going the Apple way, and may announce a Thinner and Lighter Kindle possibly unibody construction.
