Oppo Will Get The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 First

Corning is the leader when it comes to manufacturing glass panels for smartphones. Almost all the flagship smartphones use a Corning Gorilla Glass panels to ensure longevity and durability of these devices. The current Corning glass in use is the Gorilla Glass 5. However, on 19th July the company announced the new Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Dubbed as the toughest and the most customizable glass panel, the Gorilla Glass 6 is yet to feature on any smartphone. However, Corning recently announced that Oppo will be the first company to feature the Gorilla Glass 6 on its smartphones. According to rumours however, the Galaxy Note 9 was to be the first Android smartphone with Gorilla Glass 6 panels. The Note 9 is expected to launch on 9th August.

Initially, it was the first generation of Apple iPhone for which Corning designed the Gorilla Glass. Although Apple has never officially named any of the vendors from which it gets the hardware for the iPhone. The company demanded a strong glass material which would not only be durable but also responsive. In all likelihood, the 2018 iPhone will also feature the Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Apart from Apple, the other highly anticipated manufacturer to feature the Gorilla Glass 6 is Samsung. With the launch of the Galaxy Note 9 hardly a couple of days away, Samsung will most likely want to feature the latest and greatest for its flagship offering. Thus, while Oppo may be the first “official” brand, Samsung and Apple would also sport the Gorilla Glass 6 on their devices as well, among other manufacturers.

The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 will allow manufacturers to customize the way they want to use the glass. They can use it for displays, or as back panels which will be available in a coloured or textured finish. The best part is, Corning will do the designing and texturing of the glass for the company. This would mean, that the upcoming Oppo smartphone could sport a unique looking back panel.

It will be interesting to see how well the new Corning Gorilla Glass 6 performs in real life. The company claims that the glass can survive the glass can survive 15 drops from a height of 1 meter. For reference, other glass compositions, such as soda lime and aluminosilicate, do not survive the first drop from the same height. We look forward to the launch of the new Oppo device featuring the Gorilla Glass 6. It will be interesting to see how the new panel fairs against the currently available Gorilla Glass 5, which also featured in the Oppo Find X.

When we talk about displays and glass panels, Corning is the top manufacturer that comes to mind. Corning is an American tech company with its headquarters in Corning, New York. The company specializes in manufacturing glass and ceramic materials. In a press release on the 19th of July, Corning announced the latest in its Gorilla glass series, the Corning Gorilla Glass 6.

The first version of Corning Gorilla Glass was designed specifically with the first generation of iPhones in mind. Although Apple has never officially claimed to use Corning glasses on their smartphones. The company demanded a strong glass material which would not only be durable but also responsive. Which is how Corning Gorilla Glass came to be. Since then, the company has made display and body panels for other companies like Samsung.

Glass Customization

With the increased demand for smartphones, the demand for their durability is also increasing. Coring has been developing glass panel technology since 2008 when it launched the first generation of Gorilla Glass Panels. Corning announced the second generation of the Gorilla glass four years after the first version, in 2012. With each passing year, Corning claims that it has not only worked on the durability of the glass panel, but also on its methodology of developing them.

The latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6 can survive up to 15 drops from a height of 1 meter onto rough surfaces. This is twice the durability as compared to Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which could survive only 80% of drops from relatively the same height.

Various Versions Of Gorilla Glass

Smartphones like the OnePlus 6, Nokia 8 Sirocco, and the LG G7 ThinQ use the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Now that smartphone manufacturers are embracing full glass-body design, it is important that the material can survive rough use. The American company claims that Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is suitable for such scenarios. The glass will provide scratch resistance, optical clarity, wireless charging capabilities and enhanced durability.

Corning claims that the Gorilla Glass 6 is durable enough to be used without a case. Since the company is already providing an option to customize the glass to give it the desired design, the need of case wouldn’t arise in the first place.

It is quite coincidental that Corning announced the Gorilla Glass 6 before the launch of Galaxy Note 9 and the new iPhone line up. We believe that these smartphones could feature the Corning Gorilla Glass 6 in the form of a display as well as the back panel.

In a smartphone, a display is its most used parts by a user. Which is why it is important for manufacturers to use a durable material. Once the Corning Gorilla Glass is officially available, it will be interesting to see how well it does.

A couple of the more popular words for the young, tech-loving, connected generation today are “Gorilla Glass”. But what is the story behind Corning Gorilla Glass?

Situated in the city of Corning in the state of New York are the headquarters and research facilities of the world famous glass-maker, where Corning engineers are immersed in the future of glass. And while for most of us Gorilla Glass in itself is a magical creation, the team at Corning has a lot more up their sleeves.

Visiting the Corning lab and test centers is no joke. As one would expect, the high-security areas hold years of research worth billions of dollars and countless man hours.

Corning’s journey in the glass industry spans much more than a century. In the year 1879, Corning worked with Edison to make the bulb-shaped glass for the incandescent light bulb. Fast forward to 2016 and you will find Corning Gorilla Glass specifically in many modern portable devices..

Gorilla Glass is made from a fusion draw process which was developed by Corning for the automotive industry. However, at that time, the glass technology designed by Corning and the fusion draw process turned out to be too expensive for an industry looking for a cheap solution, putting fusion draw on hold.

Corning decided to revisit fusion draw technology when a big manufacturer wanted to launch a smartphone in 2007 and needed a glass solution for a capacitive screen display. The fusion draw process was utilized along with an ion exchange process, which added compressive strength to the glass, helping it become resilient and resistant to breaks.

Corning develops various forms of glass even today, and Gorilla Glass is specifically meant for portable electronics. But it does not really stop there, as many applications for a light-yet-tough glass solution exist in our modern developed world. The technology is being used by architects for interior design, can be used by appliance manufactures and is even being designed into automobiles as part of interior touch panels, and windshields.

Corning also has improved the composition with each generation of Gorilla Glass. As the number increases, Corning is focusing on a specific customer need. Gorilla Glass 3 was designed to be more scratch resistant along with usual impact resistance and Gorilla Glass 4 was designed more to resist impacts from drops on rough surfaces.

Why Glass Breaks

One of the main reasons for glass breaking is the introduction of flaws on the surface of the glass. A tough single sheet of glass becomes vulnerable to cracking and breaking with the introduction of a single scratch.

Corning conducts tests on a daily basis to understand scenarios that could introduce flaws on the surface of the glass. Tests include tumble tests, scratch and bend tests along with concentrated tests like a steel ball drop test or a simple scratch test.

Today the smartphone industry is fighting to create slimmer phones, and the glass-maker is constantly under pressure to make its glass slimmer and slimmer. Reaching a 0.4mm thickness already with Gorilla Glass 4, Corning is expecting the market to be even more aggressive in demanding a thinner front glass solution.

While most of the components on the spec list of the best new smartphone tend to be from one manufacturer or another, it seems that the real innovation may lie more with component manufacturers like Corning rather than smartphone manufacturers who seem to just be putting it all together.

Corning is Working on a Tough and Sapphire-Like Scratch Resistant Glass

Corning, a name known from producing one of the toughest glasses for mobiles, has fastened its belt to come up with a scratch resistant glass. The Gorilla Glass producer is working on a new project that will combine the toughness of a Gorilla and at the same time add the scratch-resistance property close to sapphire.

The upcoming product dubbed as Project Phire is under development, as announced yesterday by Corning Executive James Clappin. He added that the product will start selling in the market later this year. He further said –

We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire

Corning gets a major part of its revenue from TV displays and fiber-optics. Gorilla Glass, a product of Corning, has gained reputation of the most durable glass in terms of breakage and the company doesn’t want to slip this achievement to sapphire. Meanwhile, Samsung and Apple are the biggest customers of Gorilla Glass and lot many high-end phones like Galaxy Note Edge, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus use Corning glass. So Corning is planning on an ideal glass that has qualities of both.

The company is pushing its boundaries to come up with a perfect product. This new innovation is expected to be received with the same enthusiasm as its previous offerings.

Gorilla Glass 4 Launches This Quarter, Claimed to be 2x Stronger Than Any Other Screen

Creators of Gorilla Glass, Corning Incorporated, recently unveiled the fourth generation of its glass technology – the Gorilla Glass 4. The company is sure of the toughness of its new products and claims that it can endure a drop of one metre without shattering – 80 percent of the time. This new glass is being promoted as ‘up to two times stronger’ than any other competitive mobile screen, specifically aimed at surviving everyday drops in the real world.

Corning also mentioned that soda-lime glass, used in most of today’s devices, breaks almost every time when dropped from some height. The company claims that the Gorilla Glass 4 can even handle rough surfaces and pavements, signifying that with this glass technology, the phone should be less prone to shattering.

“Corning Gorilla Glass has outperformed competing materials, such as soda-lime glass and other strengthened glass, since it was introduced in 2007, and we’re always innovating to push the limits of what glass can do”, said James Steiner, SVP and General Manager at Corning.

Meanwhile, Corning testing charts reveal that the new GG4, at a thickness of 0.4 mm, can withstand higher drops than GG3, which has a thickness of 0.7 mm. This makes the GG4 more durable and apparently thinner than its earlier models.

Our sources reveal that the latest version of this glass will reach consumers this quarter. Though, Corning did not reveal which manufacturers would be the first to introduce the new toughened glass technology.

Samsung Acquires 7.4 Percent of Gorilla Glass Maker Corning

Corning has taken full control of Samsung Corning Precision Materials Co. Ltd., which is a joint venture 43 percent owned by Samsung itself. In return, the Korean company will get $1.9 billion worth of shares in Corning, which if converted, would give it a 7.4 percent stake.

Both organisations have also agreed to a deal that will see Samsung Display supplied by Corning till 2023. The company’s Gorilla Glass is used in most of the high-end smartphones and tablets, which includes products made by Samsung, Apple and even HTC. This deal might create some unwanted heat from other companies who also uses Gorilla Glass.

Corning Launches Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops

Gorilla Glass has been the name associated with strengthened mobile phone glass since 2010, but now Corning, the company behind it all plans to take it to the next step by introducing Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops. This new layer of glass promises to bring all the features of the Gorilla Glass 3 to a larger Laptop size glass.

“Known as the cover glass of choice, Corning Gorilla Glass now extends its exceptional capabilities into the emerging touch-enabled notebook market,We are confident that Corning Gorilla Glass NBT will outperform legacy soda lime glass, delivering eight to ten times more scratch resistance. In fact, for just one to two percent of a notebook’s retail price, consumers can now get the best cover glass solution: a Gorilla solution. Similar to a handheld or tablet device, the consumer’s physical interaction intensifies with a touch-enabled notebook device to include swiping, tapping, gripping and cleaning.
