  • 5 Free Apps to Help You Keep the Fitness Resolution This Year

5 Free Apps to Help You Keep the Fitness Resolution This Year

This New Year’s resolutions all around seem big on fitness. People in the virtual space have been talking a lot about being fit -from a deluge of pre and post work-out selfies to this never ending high of fitness-junkies. Yes, we get it -life is so much better after a work-out, and even better if your entire Facebook friend-list knows about it.

If fitness is your cup of tea, because of reasons mentioned above, or (hopefully) different ones, and if you too made a resolution about a healthier body and mind in 2016, we are here to help you keep it. Find below a list of five diet and exercise related apps to motivate yourself to keep in shape. Here goes:

Nike+Nike+ Running AppNo list on fitness apps can be complete without this. If you already don’t know about this cool and pretty useful app, this is why Nike+ is important -it made running so much better with its constant motivation in the form of trophies, badges and NikeFuel. It allows users various running programmes and challenges to choose from, along with the option of syncing it with your social media accounts. Nike definitely got it right with this one. It is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Tabata Stopwatch ProFitness App TabataNow that we are on the topic of cardio, let’s talk about Tabata. This amazing four minute work-out is made for those who live life on the go. Doing this work-out once in the morning and once in the evening will let you maintain a basic standard of health. The biggest hurdle in doing Tabata is keeping the time in check. But worry not, Tabata Stopwatch Pro is here to save the day. It not only plays your favourite song during the work-out but also notifies you of time intervals every 20 and 10 seconds. It’s available in both the App Store as well Google Play.

Daily YogaYoga Fitness AppIf cardio is not your thing, why not try your hand at flexibility and stretching with some good, old Yoga? Daily Yoga is an app which instructs users in Yoga for different parts of the body through comprehensive videos. Depending on the body-part and the trouble you’re facing -from aches to soreness in muscles to fat, Daily Yoga sufficiently covers all requirements. The app is available in the App Store and Google Play.

Calorie Counter – My Fitness PalHealthy diet fitnessOptimum health requires both physical exercise and a balanced diet to work in unison. Now that we have got the former part covered, it’s time to move on to the latter -that is, the right diet. Calorie Counter, as the name suggests, lets you keep a check on the daily consumption of carbs and fats. You can enter in the meal and it would give you an estimate of your calories. Once you start using it, you’d be pleasantly surprised with how customizeable this app is. Calorie Counter too is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Hydro Coach and Daily Water Free Drinking water and fitness‘Nuff with all the huffing and puffing -make sure to keep the body well-hydrated. That’s much easier said than done; making sure to drink enough water is one of the most useful but also the most underestimated hacks ever. Enough water keeps the muscles replenished and healthy enough to take on any exercise regimes. It also keeps the metabolism up and running on its feet making sure your diet and exercise is optimised in the most efficient ways. While Hydro Coach is a useful app for Android phones that will give you regular reminders to drink water, Daily Water Free is the answer for iOS users.

  • An App That Lets You Learn Anything For Free

An App That Lets You Learn Anything For Free

Seldom do you come across an app that actually makes you learn something. These days apps have taken over practically everything we used to make an effort to do. From buying your groceries to shopping for clothes, right from the comfort of your home. So how about an app that gives you free education for a change? And by free we really mean free.

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization that was created in 2006, that offers “a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere”. The organization, founded by Salman Khan (not to be confused with the actor), began by producing micro lectures in the form of YouTube videos.

Now, the organization has extended their website in the form of an app. You can use the Khan Academy app to browse the platform’s collection of educational videos. You can also bookmark topics, while everything will be synced between the app and the website. The app is genuinely free, with no in-app purchases or user account requirement.

The app features a collection of thousands of videos of topics that range from math, science, economics and finance, arts and humanities, computing, and many more, which are broken down into sub-categories like history, music, physics, chemistry, macroeconomics, once you select a topic.

    Khan Academy

It also comes with a built-in search function that lets you find the topic and category you’re looking for more precisely. You even have the option to save videos for offline mode. As an educational app, Khan Academy is great for watching short videos on the go. As a free app it does more to provide education than most other apps you find these days. With almost 40 percent of the world with internet access, Khan Academy has the potential to reach far and wide.

    Khan Academy app

Now, while the app does provide useful educational videos, it still has some cons to it. Being a free app, you’re bound to find some lectures to be below par. Anyone can post lectures on any topic, but not everyone’s a certified teacher. Even founder Salman Khan has tried his hands at multiple course lectures, and has found some disagreement with his mathematical skills or his lack of preparation.

Another potential problem is the language. Though the organization’s ambition is education on a global scale, the language in the videos are mostly in English. The webpage does have a few popular languages to choose from like Spanish, French, or Portuguese.

But these are minor bugs when compared to what Khan Academy is offering for free i.e. education for all. The organization reaches out to those without proper educational accessibility or guidance. Educators are supporting the cause and students are appreciating the site’s straightforward and easy learning structure. Khan Academy is available on App Store and Google Play. So, download it now and spread the knowledge, people.

  • Government Contemplates Giving 1GB of Free WiFi Per Month

Government Contemplates Giving 1GB of Free WiFi Per Month

In a rather exciting turn of events, the Delhi Government has moved a step closer to their promise of free WiFi. They have proposed to provide free WiFi usage of 1GB for a month.

Supposedly a phase by phase initiative, the government will provide the much needed facility first to all government and private college said Ashish Khetan, vice-chairman of Delhi Dialogue Commission. In the second and third phases, Khetan has stated that WiFi will reach other parts like rural areas and unauthorised colonies respectively.

“The minimum speed of the WiFi that we are proposing is 1 Mbps for good user experience and each user should get 1 GB of downloads for a month free.”

While it is great news that the government has finally listened to its citizens and proposed such a novel idea, they have said that they won’t be taking any infrastructural responsibility. They expect companies which have expertise in that field to develop the infrastructure while they provide the WiFi service only, thereby making sure the quality of services provided is impeccable.

“One thing that we want to do is that when we announce public wi-fi, the experience of the service should be best. When we announce a policy, it should be on an expected line. It should be on the expectations and aspirations of the people,” Khetan said.

The government believes that free WiFi will help the business sector and boost the tourism in India. He stressed on the fact that this was the AAP governments best received proposition and that they will cease to disappoint. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the same.

  • This Might be the Easiest Way to Tell Your Friends You’re ‘Free’ to Hang Out

This Might be the Easiest Way to Tell Your Friends You’re ‘Free’ to Hang Out

On an odd Friday night, when you decide you’d rather spend the night in, you want some company to watch a movie or grab a quiet meal. What do you do? You don’t want to spam the handful of close buddies who might already have their plans set for the evening. Nor can you put up a status on a social networking site, lest a creepy acquaintance accepts your invitation and lands up to your door.

Well, here is a solution to that: the ‘Free’ App. This app shows you a list of your friends who are free. It will allow you to share your availability to coordinate easily and make plans with friends. Developed by Danny Trinh, a former lead designer at Path, a social app, he explains:

With smartphones, we’re more connected than ever—there’s Gchat, WeChat, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, and more—but as connection has become the default, we’ve lost ways to announce, “I’m up to hang.” In a world where everyone’s online all the time, what’s the actual availability signal on top of that? That’s what we’re trying to build. Put another way, now that we carry chat on us at all times, the green dot is assumed.

Once downloaded, the app asks you to enter your number, register an account and provide your name, a username and your email address. You can set up your photo and use a given list of filters. The app then syncs your contacts.

    img_3184-png

You can let your friends, who might be nearby at that time, know that you are ready to go out (green), flexible (yellow) or busy at that moment (red).  However, for the app to work, you must enable location services on your phone. You can also attach a message, tag friends you are with and select a place and time, just like Facebook. Once you set up your first status, you have the option to choose which buddies to send it to and for how long they can see the message or status. These statuses go into Free’s feed that you can quickly flick through to all your friends’ plans, and disappear the next morning.

    press-phone

True, there are so many social networking apps right now, like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter. But the reason Free might win is that it cuts out the clutter to focus back on in-person communication. For now, the app is available only for iOS devices.

  • Report : Microsoft Developing Free Windows 8.1 Operating System

Report : Microsoft Developing Free Windows 8.1 Operating System

Sources close to Microsoft have reported this week that the company is currently developing and experimenting with a new free version of its Windows 8.1 operating system.

Bing, which will be at the center of the low-cost operating system, is already growing as a platform and Microsoft hopes that will continue into the future.

While early versions of the software have leaked online, we understand that Windows 8.1 with Bing is an experimental project that aims to bring a low-cost version of Windows to consumers.

Considering that the company has already cut licensing fees by as much as 70%, Microsoft is already looking to make Windows 8.1 a low-cost OS for manufacturers interested in using the platform.

More details of a low-cost Windows 8.1 operating system as well as the merging of Windows RT and Windows Phone are expected to be made available by Microsoft during their Build conference later this year.

  • Windows Phone and Windows RT May Soon Be Free Of License Fees

Windows Phone and Windows RT May Soon Be Free Of License Fees

The Verge is reporting that sources close to Microsoft have indicated the company is seriously considering making Windows Phone and Windows RT available to device manufacturers free of charge. Microsoft would most likely move to a free licensing model with the upcoming “Threshold” update, the next major Windows update rumoured to bring back the Start menu.

The majority of Windows revenue currently comes from licensing Windows 8 and Windows RT to OEMs. However, Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Nokia’s handset division virtually eliminated any significant Windows Phone licensing revenue, as the Finnish manufacturer was responsible for 80% of all Windows Phone shipments.

It is expected that Microsoft will try to make up for the revenue loss through apps and services, the company has experimented with running ads in Windows 8 apps so something along the same lines can be implemented in those operating systems as well. The aim is to combat Android, but it remains to be seen if free versions of its mobile operating systems will entice OEMs to develop more Windows Phone and Windows RT powered devices.

I would fall in love with the Lg G2 if it could learn and tell me everytime I get lost on my way and then guide me back on track. If it could sense that I am in a restaurant and tell me to click the dessert and instagram it before I gulp it all in. If the G2 could learn when I’am sitting idle and update me with the latest news as well as the whereabouts of my dear ones. Basically, if the LG G2 could learn and adapt to my irregular and sporadic self, the LG G2 would be my closest friend.

  • WhatsApp For iOS Reverts To Subscription Model, Adds iCloud Backup, Multi-Photo Sharing

WhatsApp For iOS Reverts To Subscription Model, Adds iCloud Backup, Multi-Photo Sharing

The enormously successful mobile chat tool WhatsApp, which Apple recently listed as the 6th most popular paid app of all time, has received some major updates today.

Today, the company has issued an update with a few nice features, and have quietly removed the 99c / Rs. 60 barrier to entry, reverting to an annual subscription model of the same amount.

The paid app business model is really a vestige of an older era where developers would sell their work up-front. But over time, many paid apps have made the switch toward going free with paid features. Games really triggered this wave, but other high-usage apps like messaging have gone for a freemium strategy.

The new version also adds iCloud message backup, which allows synchronization of chat states between devices and backup and restoration of content after logging out of changing devices.

The company has also added third-party URL schemes, which allows various apps to share data to WhatsApp and vice versa, and users can now send multiple messages to an individual or group (much needed!).

While this isn’t the visual overhaul many users were hoping for, it’s a great update nonetheless.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular cross platform messaging services out there. It recently announced that the service has over 250 million monthly active users, not to mention the fact that WhatsApp handles more than 27 billion messages every single day.
