Trends For The Photography Industry In 2019

The photography industry is evolving rapidly and has seen a lot of ups and down in the past twenty years. With micro four thirds cameras giving way to 35mm film, film cameras giving way to point and shoot and then ultimately 35mm DSLRs and now Mirrorless cameras. The industry has changed as and when consumers have needed it to. During the war, cameras such as Zenit and Zorki were built robustly for the soldiers to take to war. As time went by, camera manufacturers started focussing on bigger image sizes, instant print cameras and so on. But now, we are knocking on the doors of 2019, which may dawn a new era in the camera and overall photography industry. Let’s find out which new camera technology we feel will emerge and will be in 2019’s photography trends.

    More Mirrorless Cameras

Sony and Fujifilm have been manufacturing mirrorless cameras for a while now and with technology advancing at a very fast pace, there cameras are now performing as good as, or sometimes better than DSLRs. Mirrorless cameras are smaller in size and easier to carry due to the lack of the mirror mechanism. The digital viewfinder also helps one see the exact output when changing the settings in a camera through their viewfinder. These cameras were generally avoided by professionals in earlier years since it’s inception because of the lack of it’s lens portfolios.

But with big players such as Canon and Nikon entering the mirrorless game this year, all manufacturers have stepped up and released a huge lens portfolio for their mirrorless line up. There are many users who hate switching brands and brand loyalty is something that will be put to test with the camera companies now competing in a level playing field.

    DSLR Sales Will Decrease

DSLRs have been the choice of photographers for a long time now. These cameras have established lens lineups, are robustly built and can be built in all price ranges. But with mirrorless cameras slowly gaining ground in the market, DSLR sales may decrease drastically. Many news agencies use DSLRs from Canon and Nikon and were reluctant to shift to a new system till now. This was because a shift would mean changing lenses and accessories as well.

With the two major players entering the high end mirrorless segment, interchangeability might be possible between different systems. This means use of DSLR lenses on mirrorless cameras and vice versa. This can be done with the help of proprietary adapters. These adapters will not reduce the lens’ focussing speeds and other capabilities like Image stabilisation. In 2019’s photography trends, there is a good chance that a large chunk of the DSLR users will shift towards mirrorless. This will therefore decrease DSLR sales.

    Video Centric Micro-Four Thirds Cameras

Since ages, filmmakers have used either 35mm or 16mm to shoot videos. Be it in film or in digital backs. The 35mm cameras have been the choice of many filmmakers. Great Hollywood films such as Black Swan, 127 Hours, Avengers, Whiplash and even TV series like Dexter and House have all used DSLRs for their shoot at some point. Documentary filmmakers use the 16mm format more often. But a new format is gaining ground and camera manufacturers are trying to push this format hard on the market. The Micro four thirds, is a format that sits between full frame cameras or 35mm and APS-C sensors. This format allows the camera to be less bulky but provides great quality footage.

The micro four thirds are also mirrorless cameras but differ in sensor size. These cameras have a sensor size equivalent to a 4/3-inch video tube. Having a digital viewfinder also helps filmmakers look at exposure and framing in real-time through the viewfinder itself and not have to look at the screen. Now, having a smaller sensor size has not reduced the resolution as many of these cameras provide the same, and at times more, resolution than a DSLR’s video. Cameras such as Panasonic’s GH5  or Olympus’ OM-D E-M1 Mark II are being made with filmmakers in mind. It will be great to see other companies joining the bandwagon. With the digital space growing at an alarming rate, Vloggers, Streamers and Youtubers can definitely take advantage of this format.

Artificial Intelligence In DSLRs and Mirrorless

If we can have a digital assistant at home for us to switch on and switch off lights and perform other tasks, why can’t we have artificial intelligence in our cameras? Cameras, like smartphones are becoming smarter by the day. Even a few years back, it was unimaginable to ask your camera “GoPro, take a photo” and the camera would follow. Well, now you can. With technology evolving at an alarming rate, camera manufacturers are including features like WiFi connectivity, bluetooth, voice commands and so on for cameras as well.

Artificial Intelligence is already present in many cameras that can detect faces, click photos when it sees smiling faces, connect to your phones and so on. While a personal assistant for all your photography needs may be a long time away, we feel that there may be a good chance that more AI features will be integrated into a camera in the coming year’s photography trends.

    Fingerprint Sensors In Cameras

For photojournalists and studio photographers, for media houses and wedding photography teams, several users share a single camera in different times. And every user has his or her own preference. Be it the exposure setting, focus or colour settings and so on. This is where fingerprint sensors come in. Just like a computer has different user settings where a particular user can log-in to his or her user preferences a camera with a fingerprint sensor can scan the fingerprint of the user and immediately change the current settings to that.

This would be a great to see in 2019, if manufacturers do decide to include such a thing. Canon has already patented a fingerprint scanner technology for it’s camera. But it is unclear what they plan on doing with it.  With the sensor, one can also be sure that the camera will not fall into the wrong hands and will prevent it from being stolen and used.

    Better Lenses

Lenses are as important as the camera body itself.  A photographer needs to choose his or her lenses carefully and according to the need. Lenses are also quite expensive so it is best to select expensive and well performing ones than buying cheap ones. Specially if you are a professional. In photography trends of 2019, we expect to see some really great lenses. One of the major complaints most photographers have with DSLRs are that the cameras don’t fare too well in extreme low light conditions.

Next year can be a welcome change for them as many manufacturers, with meteoric advancements in optics, are now creating extremely wide aperture lenses. These lenses can go as low as f/1.2 or even f/1 or f/0.95. Canon’s 50mm f/1 or Leica’s 50mm f/0.95 are great examples. These lenses can shoot at extremely low lighting conditions with relatively lower ISOs providing great images without noise. This year we can expect more of these lenses from different manufacturers as well.

These were our predictions for photography trends of 2019. Let us know in the comments, what you feel should make it in this piece and we will try and include the same!

  • Samsung NX mini Unboxing

    Samsung NX mini Unboxing

There is always some skepticism when a name of a camera is prefixed with ‘mini’. We have seen in the past that many manufacturers failed to deliver a great camera in a small package. The Samsung NX mini is targeted towards young amateur photographers who focus on style and selfies above all.

    Samsung NX mini 0

Well, this camera is not yet launched in India, but it is going to be coming soon with an exclusive partnership with Amazon.in priced at less than Rs. 30,000. NX mini is undoubtedly the slimmest interchangeable-lens camera available in the market. It does have a flip-up touchscreen and a cool selfie mode that lets you click a selfie by just blinking. You also get Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for free inside the box; which is a great software for aspiring photographers.

The biggest selling point here is its super-slim, lightweight body that you can slip into a handbag, or even a pocket. Without the lens attached, the NX mini is no larger than many compact point-and-shoots, but when you stick on the 9-27mm (24.3mm, 35mm equivalent) f/3.5 kit lens, it becomes little thick to carry around. There’s a 1-inch, 20.5-megapixel CMOS sensor that is identical in size to what you’ll get with very high-end compacts. However, quite smaller than the APS-C sensor manufacturers included with mirrorless cameras like the Alpha 6000 or the NX30.

    Samsung NX mini 3

The camera comes with a 16 GB micro-SD card and 2330mAh battery, which means that the camera will last for good 300 shots approximately. The camera is NFC-enabled and can be easily connected with NFC-enabled smartphones. The 20.5 MP BSI sensor, the company claims, is made by them. We’re uncertain about the authenticity of that statement, since these kind of sensors are made by Sony only. The lens included in the box is a 9mm (24.3mm, 35mm equivalent) f/3.5 kit lens and is fairly good for this price range.

On the top of the camera, you have a microphone pinhole, and hot-shoe sort of mount for Samsung external flash that comes with the package, Wi-Fi button, power on/off button and the shutter button. All of these buttons are seem to be made of metal and brushed aluminium, which makes it a high-quality premium looking device.

    Samsung NX mini 14

The camera supports a set of lenses that are called NX-mini lens and are completely different from regular NX lenses. You can use other lenses from Samsung if you have $150 adapter, which is a third party adapter. However, we heard that Samsung is also working on an in-house adapter.

Once you turn on the camera, you have to further twist the lens to unlock it. The shutter release is nearly full-size, and once you launch the menu, you can adjust many settings simply by tapping the 3-inch, 480 x 320 touchscreen, which also flips up 180 degrees for self-portraits, or at any angle in between for shots below eye-level, or overhead if you flip the camera upside-down.

    Samsung NX mini 8

As for the UI, there’s nothing out of the ordinary here. You can control just about everything using the touchscreen, though you can also use the four-way controller on the side to navigate. The menu interface includes all the general options and isnothing new. You get Auto share, ISO setting, image quality, etc. You also get a picture wizard which changes the setting according to the scene.

Its Wi-Fi mode lets you access a variety of wireless sharing options. MobileLink can be used to send photos from the camera to a smartphone or tablet, or Remote Viewfinder, which miraculously lets you access all of the NX mini’s shooting modes, including manual, from another device.

The Samsung NX mini gives access to Samsung Home Monitor, which requires its smartphone app and lets you use the camera to keep an eye on a child, for example, assuming your camera and phone are connected to the same WiFi network.

The camera fairly fast to focus and click the picture. The capacitative touchscreen allows you zoom in and out extremely easily. Apart from the fact that you don’t have a full manual control during video shooting mode, and its inability to use different lenses, the camera itself is very powerful. The look and the feel is also quite amazing.

The price is expected to be around Rs. 27,000 for 9-27mm lens package and Rs. 24,000 for 9mm lens package when launched exclusively on Amazon.in. This is not an official price but if the pricing remains the same, this device will a perfect starter camera for amateurs or a secondary camera for people who use DSLRs on the daily basis.

  • Sony A5100: A Tiny Mirrorless Camera with Super-Fast Autofocus

Sony A5100: A Tiny Mirrorless Camera with Super-Fast Autofocus

Adding to its line of mirrorless cameras, Sony is back again with the new A5100.  Six months after introducing the A6000, Sony replaces the NEX-5T and dropping the NEX line, unifying all its mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras with Sony Alpha A5100.

It’s also a very minor upgrade over the existing A5000. It has a similar body design, but adds more advanced image sensors. The Sony A5000 is a small size camera with the smallest APS-C interchangeable-lens camera out there. However, before this upgrade, it didn’t have the hybrid autofocus system. The camera is extremely small-sized (4.3 x 2.5 x 1.4 inch) to be packed with so many feature.

    denqfltv2iwrszbnej3u

The camera does not have an electronic viewfinder, but it does have a NEX-5T-like touchscreen. The ability to tap and focus is quite convenient. It pairs 179 phase-detection AF points with 25 contrast-detection AF points. Sony says it can lock on in as little as 0.07 seconds. Continuous shooting mode supports up to 6fps.

    Screenshot_2014-08-17_19.26.12.0

The Sony A5100’s 921k-dot display flips forward 180 degrees for self-portraits. There’s also built-in WiFi, XAVC S video capture and a top sensitivity of ISO 25,600.

If you are a video shooter, then Sony A5100 also stores cool innards for you. There is an option of recording in XAVC S, which allows users to capture footage in 1080p at a bit rate of 50Mbps. Sony says the camera can optionally make two versions of clips: one in AVCHD for easier sharing, and the other in XAVC S with a greater focus on quality. Although, they haven’t provided a mic jack which is disappointing.

But overall, the Sony A5100 seems like a great value. It’ll start shipping in early September, but you can pre-order now. It is available in two color options – white and black.

Samsung’s recently available NX300 mirrorless camera was one of the most anticipated camera because of its 3D capabilities. The camera did not do pretty good in the Indian market, but that does not stops Samsung to refresh the camera.

Samsung has refreshed the NX300 camera with the new NX300M which brings something more useful to the user, the new camera has  a 3.31 inch AMOLED touch display that can now flip to 180 degrees instead of just 90 which was on the NX300.

    An Advanced Video Capture Device

The EOS M utilizes Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF system to deliver fast autofocus speed for both video and photos. The Hybrid CMOS AF system truly shines when shooting video with EOS Full HD Movie mode including Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocus and tracking of moving subjects. The Hybrid CMOS AF system is located on the CMOS sensor itself and combines phase-difference AF and contrast AF to achieve operational stability, speed and precision. The Movie Servo AF function on the EOS M is enabled by default which keeps images on the rear screen in constant focus, even before the shutter is pressed. This continual focus makes for sharp video capture in a snap or to help reduce shutter lag due to focusing when still images want to be shot. The camera employs three AF methods for video and photos, Face Detection & Tracking AF, Multi-Point AF for automatics selection and Single-Point AF, where users select one of 31 AF points. Through the camera’s touch-panel operation, subject recognition and tracking is engaged at the touch of a finger, allowing users to track subjects accurately and focus on intended subjects with ease. In addition to subject tracking, the touch-panel LCD allows for simple, intuitive operation, menu navigation and touch features making it easy to shoot video and photos.

Thanks to Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology, when using either of the newly announced M-series lenses – the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens or the optional EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens – the AF system remains silent, helping ensure users only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS M also features manual audio level control to 64 levels, a built-in stereo microphone, which includes a wind filter and an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations. The EOS M records MPEG-4 AVC H.264 video as an .MOV file in a range of NTSC and PAL professional frame rates, including 1080p Full HD video at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) and 25p, 720p HD video at 60p (59.94) or 50p and Standard Definition video at 30p (29.97) or 25p.

In addition to the creativity afforded by over 70 compatible lenses, the EOS M also includes Picture Style settings – including custom Picture Styles – when shooting video, allowing users to adjust color settings the same as when shooting still images. The camera also includes Canon’s Video Snapshot mode for an easy way to record and create a fun highlight reel that can be easily shared. Video Snapshot mode combines a series of short video clips into a single file, all in-camera. Through the camera’s touch-screen controls users can delete, cut or re-order the clips in-camera for quick and easy editing.

Optical Diversity: New M-Series Lenses and Accessories

Along with the EOS M, Canon is also introducing two new M-series lenses – with new EOS M mounts –that include STM technology allowing for smooth and silent focusing when paired with Hybrid CMOS AF.

The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens is ideal for shooting video and still images. The fixed focal length lens has a great capacity for gathering light with an incredible aperture of f/2 and when combined with the camera’s APS-C image sensor, provide beautiful bright images and background blur for both video and stills. For more focal range versatility, Canon is also introducing the new EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, which provides videographers and photographers with a variable zoom range for general use with video recording or photographing. Both lenses are designed specifically for use with the EOS M digital camera.

In addition to the two lenses, any of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses can be used with the EOS M with the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M. The EOS M camera’s strong magnesium and stainless steel frame provide the durability and rigidity to support the full line of EF and EF-S Lenses in a lightweight convenient design. Using the adapter allows the camera to be fully integrated into the EOS ecosystem of lenses, adding creative options and versatility to this powerful camera.

Ideal for use with the EOS M, Canon is also announcing a new compact and lightweight flash unit, the Speedlite 90EX, designed for the photographer on the go. The Speedlite 90EX is capable of coverage for 24mm wide angle lenses (35mm equivalent) with maximum guide numbers of 30 feet (9 meters) at ISO 100. The flash unit can be controlled wirelessly for creative multiple flash shoots and uses the standard Canon EOS hot shoe mount for compatibility with all EOS DSLR cameras and PowerShot digital cameras that include a hot shoe.

Share life in perfect detail with the NX1000, NX20 and NX210 – the world’s first SMART compact system cameras with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity

BEIJING, China – April 19, 2012 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies is breaking new ground with its award-winning NX series with three new compact system cameras (CSC) that pioneer built-in Wi-Fi connectivity: the NX1000, NX210 and NX20. Now professional quality images can be easily captured, shared and stored straight from your camera – wherever you are in the world.

    Introducing the NX1000, NX210 and NX20

The innovative additions to Samsung’s NX range represent the future in CSC technology: SMART cameras with in-built Wi-Fi technology that allow users to connect to wireless networks without any additional cards or devices. Full Wi-Fi connectivity is complemented by an impressive range of features, continuing the heritage of innovation that the NX series has been consistently recognized for since the launch of the NX10 in 2010.

As standard, all three NX models feature a 20.3 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, developed in-house by Samsung to give high quality images in rich color and detail. They are also fully compatible with the NX series’ unique i-Function system, enabling users to control parameters using the lens itself, adjusting the image without ever having to move off target. With Samsung’s range of nine lenses and professional standard accessories, the NX eco-system ensures that all imaging ambitions can be realised, whatever the user’s photographic speciality or interest.

Enhancing Samsung’s 2012 SMART CAMERA ecosystem, these latest additions to the NX range have been designed to satisfy the ambitions of users of all abilities, whether an experienced professional or someone just looking to trade-up from their point-and-shoot.

The NX1000 is highly portable and its eye-catching compact design makes it as useable as it is attractive. Available in stunning White, classic Black or eye-catching Pink it houses a feature-rich range of specs, with technology such as Smart Auto 2.0 and the Smart Link Hot Key, making it simpler than ever to shoot and share great images instantly.

The NX210 follows the NX’s design heritage, with a premium metallic finish. Like its predecessor the NX200, the NX210 also offers a 3.0″ AMOLED display for viewing images and Full HD movies in brilliant resolution. With easy access to Wi-Fi functions, the NX210 allows quick sharing with friends and family, whilst with Samsung Mobile Link users can show off their best images on phones and tablets, or on the big screen with TV Link connecting the NX210 wirelessly to internet-enabled TVs.

The NX20 is the perfect match for enthusiast amateur or professional photographers looking for a highly portable camera that gives the professional look and feel of a DSLR but at a fraction of the size and weight, with the addition of an ergonomic grip to fit comfortably into the hand. Delivering impressive speed with its 1/8000s Fast Shutter, breath-taking images are shown on its clear 3.0″ clear AMOLED swivel display, increasing visibility by approximately 20%. In-Built Wi-Fi for simple sharing and saving

The cameras also offer further options for capturing and displaying images via other devices, including the ability to link to a Samsung smartphone and use as a remote viewfinder, and – with the Samsung Mobile Link function – to display images on devices such as tablets or internet-enabled TV.

Creative control at the touch of a button

Pictures shared on the spur of the moment are no longer restricted to simply shooting and sending – with the creative features of the new NX cameras, Facebook pictures can be artistic without ever going near a computer. With the Smart Panel featured on all the new models, settings and features can be easily accessed and applied, making creative photography easier than ever.

Mr. Myoung Sup Han, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics, commented: “The three new additions to the NX range mark an evolution in Samsung’s SMART CAMERA offering, demonstrating our understanding that digital imaging is about sharing the best moments with family and friends, and not only about taking great pictures. Samsung is paving the way, introducing the world’s first SMART Compact-System-Cameras for professional standard images that are worth sharing.”

“With the inclusion of in-built Wi-Fi connectivity, our customers can now share pictures and videos straight from their NX camera.
