Surprise! Rovio is Releasing Angry Birds 2 Soon

Remember Angry Birds? The game, which was massively popular before the likes of Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans replaced it (and its various spin-offs). The addictive game will now make a comeback in the form a sequel. Rovio, the publisher behind Angry Birds, confirmed that a sequel named Angry Birds 2 will be released on July 30. The news is a bit surprising since the game has lived on in the form of various spin-offs such as Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars.

At this point, Rovio has revealed next to nothing about the upcoming game. Aside from the above tweet, Rovio has released a teaser in which we see a bunch of pigs standing around some crates and we can hear the trademark banter by the birds in the background. The look of the teaser reminds us of the prologue that comes before every stage in the game.

Originally launched in 2009, Angry Birds became the ‘must-have’ game on everyone’s phone. The game was designed to be played on smartphones (Android and iOS were a couple of years old back then) and in a matter of months, achieved a massive following. Rovio took advantage of the success and released different versions of the game like RioSeasonsStar Wars and Transformers. Rovio also made a huge amount of money through Angry Birds merchandise. Even the pigs got their own game!

Although Angry Birds has been downloaded almost 3 billion times, counting all versions, Rovio has seen a decline in profit. According to Time, the company generated just $170 million in revenue and $11 million in operating profit in 2014, down from the year before, which forced the company to cut more than 100 jobs last year as well. To revitalize the franchise, Rovio is also planning to release an Angry Birds movie next year starring Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones.

We will learn only after July 30 whether the public still loves the angry, glass and wood smashing birds.

Rovio Teases Their Upcoming Racing Game, Angry Birds Go!

Angry Birds creator Rovio has a new game in the works, which is teased on a newly released website that features a bird dashing down a pathway. “Something NEW is coming!” reads the site, and in a blog post, Rovio says the game is unlike its standard Angry Birds titles.

“Those birds and piggies are getting ready for their most thrilling and action-packed game yet,” explains a post on Rovio’s blog.

“All your favorite characters are returning for a brand new title that will bring you closer to Piggy Island than ever before. It’s Angry Birds, but not as you know it!”

Angry Birds Go! will be the seventh game in Rovio’s series, following the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Friends.

    Angry Birds Go

Rovio hasn’t announced what platforms Angry Birds Go! will be released for. The first four games were mobile titles, while Angry Birds Friends launched as a Facebook web game before crossing to mobile.

The Angry Birds games attracted 263m monthly active players in December 2012, and helped Rovio generate €152.2m (£129m) of revenues in 2012, posting a net profit after tax of €55.5m (£47m).

No release date was given, but Rovio says ‘be on the lookout for more updates over the summer,’ so it sounds like they’re shooting for a late summer/fall release. For updates, make sure you follow the official Facebook page.

Angry Birds – Now on Windows Phone 7

For those of you who own a Windows Phone 7 Smart-phone, there’s some good news! You can now download  Angry Birds from the Marketplace onto your phone. The first time we heard that this game was coming to the platform was in October 2010, even before the mobile OS was launched. A few days before its launch, Microsoft included an image which hinted at the game being a part of the platform. However, Rovio, the company behind the physics game, had not developed a version for the platform.

Microsot and Rovio later made up and the software giant hinted at a 2011 release. The game was scheduled for mid May and then pushed back to 29th June. On Wednesday, users from around the world could download the game from the Marketplace.

  • Angry Birds Daily Downloads greater that 1 Million

Angry Birds Daily Downloads greater that 1 Million

This week Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka said that the smash hit game Angry Birds is now downloaded more than one million times per day. About 8 months ago in a similar situation the company had given the 2 million number for 2 days, i.e. 2 mill downloads in 2 days. But, for a similar trend to continue for so long is really applaudable.

Rovio’s super hit angry birds is available in various versions like Seasons, Standard and Rio. Angry birds is also the most cross platform game, available on iOS / Android / Mac / WebOS and soon on Windows Phone 7 Devices.

  • Bogus Angry Birds Apps on the Google Marketplace

Bogus Angry Birds Apps on the Google Marketplace

Bogus Angry Birds Apps on the Google Marketplace are being used to distribute Malware. Andrew Brandt, lead threat research analyst at Webroot, had this to say about the code dubbed “Plankton”
It has the ability to remotely access a command-and-control [C&C] server for instructions, and upload additional payloads. It uses a very stealthy method to push any malware it wants to phone.
The code was first found by Xuxian Jiang, who is the Assistant Professor in Computer Science at North Carolina State University. Unlike other malicious code found in the Marketplace, Plankton does not rely on getting “root” access to the device. Instead, once installed, Plankton can call in other files from a hacker-controlled server, including ones that would exploit one or more unpatched Android bugs. It also harvests data from the phone, including the bookmarks, bookmark history and home page of the device’s built-in browser.

All 10 of the apps that Google pulled after Jiang’s report purported to be add-ons or cheats for the popular mobile game “Angry Birds” from Finnish game company Rovio. None of the apps actually provided their promised functionality, however, but were simply the delivery vehicles for Plankton.

This is not the first attack code removed by Google from its Marketplace.
