    Nokia Belle 701 Review

Nokia is really struggling with their Symbian phones, especially after the announcement of the end of days for the OS. Nokia Belle is the name given to the dying OS and the new revision brings some promise. Lets see how the Nokia 701 with Belle does in our review.

    Build Quality

The Nokia 701 is exceptionally well built, If you have handled any of their E-Series metal phones, you will feel a similar sort of construction here. The back cover and top front bezel are all steel, the frame and remaining parts are solid plastic with a nice paint job that fools you into believing that the whole phone is made of metal. The 701 is also considerably heavy and feel really solid in the hand . The glass however, sits flush with the bezel and is prone to cracking if the device falls face-first. Overall the build is up to mark if not above it.

    Secondary Screen Size N/A
    Screen Colours 16 million colours
    Camera Yes
    Camera Resolution 8 megapixels
    Flash Yes, dual LED

    Radio Yes, with RDS

    Battery 1300mAh, 6hrs talktime, 504hrs standby

    Display, Camera and Multimedia

The display on the 701 is supposedly the brightest display in the world. It has a 1000 nits brightness and excellent outdoor visibility. The screen is also very responsive to touch and has great color reproduction.

The camera was a let down especially because sits a fixed focus camera, so has a lot of limitations. The video quality is mediocre and pictures are decent. Indoor performance is poor to say the least. Don’t rely on the camera much if you are a happy snapper.

Audio quality from the speaker is impressively good, the sound has deep bass and great quality mids and highs. The included earphones can be used for daily medium use, If you like listening to good quality music on your phone consider investing in a set of good earphones.

    OS, Apps and Internet

Belle is possibly the only OS from the Symbian range that can truly compete with the Likes of Android and iOS, still not truly there, the OS is much more responsive than the previous builds and offers a more-Android-esque UI. Switchable dashboard, a notification panel, app drawer and widgets that mimic Android. Still, its user friendly , but certain things such as age old connectivity options and old menus are a let down.

Apps are limited to the ones on the OVI store and there are a lot now-a-days . From Angry Birds to NFS you even have Whatsapp and Skype.

Internet browser is still slow and laggy, pinch to zoom does not work and the browser cannot render a full page within the screen. The need to pan limits what you are looking at in the phones screen. There are however tons of apps from the Ovi store like : Opera Mini, and U browser that make the internet experience a lot better.

    Battery Life

The Phone has a really bright display so you would expect a high battery drain, contrary to that battery life was excellent with over 5 hours of talk time, sometimes even 7 hours. the phone lasted 5 days on standby which was needless to say – impressive.

    Conclusion

The Nokia 701 is proof that the company is really trying to prove itself in what has now become a world of iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7.5. The build quality is superior and so is the display , the OS is a drastic improvement over previous gen interfaces that were usually a let down. However, that being said, the phone feels a bit overpriced, and we have seen capable companies with better softwares and hardware throw out better phones at lower prices. We fail to understand why Nokia keeps pricing their phones so high.  If you are a die hard Nokia fan and still need a fix of that Symbian Love this phone should suit you, bear in mind that the optics are sub satisfactory.

    We Rate it 3.5/5

    Price Rs. 17,999/-

  • Nokia gives free Car Mode for early Belle adopters

Nokia gives free Car Mode for early Belle adopters

Nokia’s new Car Mode is the most seamless car connectivity system between a Smartphone and a Head-unit of your vehicle you will ever find. This lets you connect your phone to your car’s infotainment system (if you’ve got one) and control your phone through the car, rather than touching the phone itself. Two apps out of which  One is called Nokia Car Mode that offers Nokia’s leading turn-by-turn navigation, as well as the overall smartphone experience into the car environment, while also bringing Nokia Drive, traffic updates, Nokia Music and voice calls while driving.

The other is called Nokia Car Mode with MirrorLink that gives additional MirrorLink support and the seamless connectivity of the smartphone within the car at a cost of £17.99 (Rs. 1699).

    (In order of preference)

    Android Phones

Samsung Galaxy R (Rs. 20,000) : Have 20k to spend? This is our pick for smartphone under the 20 thousand mark. The dual core smartphone is available at online retailers for prices well below 19k including deals, searching will get you a good deal. The phone performs great and a review done for the second time, by us, will fill you in on required info.

LG Optimus 2X (Rs 18,599) : Although the phone fared poorly in our review, The device has been rooted, modded and been patched to fix all software glitches of the stock ROM, This is a alternative dual core smartphone for the modder and cellphone tweaker. This phone will keep you busy for hours. If you plan to mess around with software on your device this is your poison. Although this may not help you Our Review is here

Motorola Defy Plus (Rs 17,000) :  The best rugged phone in this class, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 512MB ram a 3.7 inch WXGA screen and endless hours of outdoor fun. This is your device if you love the outdoors but want in on the latest smartphone action. The Defy Plus will most probably get the ICS update since it has all supporting hardware ( Considering that Motorola is almost a Google entity now) . Our complete review with the higher priced Xperia Active is here.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V ( Rs 17,499) :  Five words : “Timescape plus Mobile Bravia Engine” define what Android on a smartphone should look like. There is nothing that looks and performs as good as the TimeScape UI (Considering only Android OS)on Sony Ericsson Phones ( according to us) The phone is powered with a 1GHZ scorpion processor and features a 3.7 inch Screen with MBE. It has 512 MB Ram and Android 2.3 with a confirmed upgrade for Ice Cream Sandwich. Our Review is Here

Curve 9360 (Rs. 19,000) : The curve that runs OS 7, a fix for those who are not yet ready to shift to a full touch Blackberry, and those who are not ready to switch to Android or the likes of iOS. The device is the slimmest Blackberry yet at only 11mm. 800 MHz processor 512MB Ram and 512MB Rom. Check out our Video.

Curve 9380 ( Rs 20,000): The first full touch curve, it brings BB OS 7 and a range of nice changes to the blackberry users, 800 MHz cpu , 512 MB Ram and 512 MB Rom is carried on from its younger cousin above. iOS

What else could you ask from a two year old phone. in terms of specs, it runs at 600MHz, has 16GB internal storage and 256MB Ram. The AppStore is the largest app market although most new apps may not perform great on the 3Gs. But hey you still get asked the question : “You have an iPhone”? Read our Editorial Here

  • Nokia bids adieu to the Symbian name, embraces Nokia Belle

Nokia bids adieu to the Symbian name, embraces Nokia Belle

Nokia is playing games, in a old school fashion. The overall morale and sales of Symbian devices have dipped since Mr. Elop announced that they would be dropping support for the devices back in June. Nokia has found a very “Delhi” way of dealing with the problem, change the name!. Nokia has rebranded all current and upcoming devices as running on “Nokia Belle”. The Symbian name has been let go and without much fanfare, to much disappointment of Symbian lovers and owners.

[threecol_one]”The all new Nokia Belle (previously Symbian Belle)…”[/threecol_one]

[threecol_two_last]The small little mention in the list of upcoming devices is the only mention of this change that marks the end of an Era. Looks to us Nokia is trying its best to get rid of remaining hardware before it pushes forward all mighty WP7.5[/threecol_two_last]

  • RIP: Nokia 600 ended, before it truly began

RIP: Nokia 600 ended, before it truly began

The Nokia 600 was a replacement to the long series of Nokia Music phones. But looks like the company is no longer interested in selling this particular device. This is another sad demise of a Symbian device, truly sad. The company’s taken down any pages on its websites that are related to the product from the main and developer websites. The device ran Symbian belle and had a 360 x 640 pixels, 3.2 inches display with full multitouch support. The device also had a 1 GHz processor, 2D/3D graphics HW accelerator, which would have made it a fast and responsive device.

The thing is, after careful consideration, we have decided not to ship the Nokia 600.

  • Nokia will stop selling Symbian devices in North America!

Nokia will stop selling Symbian devices in North America!

Chris Weber, President of Nokia’s US operations has wait that Nokia will cease Symbian products post the launch of Windows Phone devices in the North American operations.

When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc.”

-Chris Weber, President of Nokia US

This may also be due to huge losses by Nokia with their previous handsets in the market. The overall share of Nokia devices is at a all time low, especially in the smart phone segment. This also means that Symbian devices may go obsolete in the Near future in India as well.

SENTINEL – The First Women’s Security App

MindHelix Technologies LLP, a Kochi based IT company, has launched an app called SENTINEL which is the first app designed with women’s security in mind. The app can send instant alerts in case of any problems. A forced power-off of the phone or an improper exit of the application will trigger an alert to be sent. Prolonged signal loss will also cause a ‘fail safe’ alert SMS and email to be sent from the company’s server.

Co-Founder & CEO Christin Emmanuel George said

[quote]We want to add a direct emailing or texting to nearest police station as soon as possible. We hope to get their consent in receiving and acting on such information.[/quote]

According to a survey by Assocham Social Development Foundation, more than 53% of women feel unsafe in their workplace, especially at night. With crimes against the fairer sex on the rise, applications like these could provide a sense of security for women. Records show that crime rates against women have increased dramatically in the metros.

Sentinel can send multiple SMS and e-mail alerts to preconfigured numbers and e-mail ids. The alerts would include last known location, direction of travel, mode of transportation and vehicle number (which the user can enter). The app has been designed for smart phones including all devices with Android, Blackberry, Symbian, iOS and Java operating systems. The application was designed with the urban woman in mind and requires a continuous cellphone signal.

The two devices are the first Nokia smartphones to contain the updated Symbian software, with new icons and usability enhancements such as improved text input, a faster browser and refreshed Ovi Maps.

“We are further strengthening Nokia’s smartphone portfolio with these two new devices, both of which offer a more beautiful and intuitive user experience that will soon also be available for the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01,” said Jo Harlow, head of Nokia’s Smart Devices business. “With these new products and more Symbian devices and user enhancements coming in the near future, we are confident we can keep existing Nokia smartphone customers engaged, as well as attract new first-time and competitor smartphone users.”
