LG Also Patents A Smartphone With Invisible Selfie Camera, Could Launch Soon

Innovation in the field of smartphones is at an all-time high. In order to increase the screen-to-body ratio on handsets, OEMs have shrunken the bezels around the display. However, this move leads to the dilemma of finding a position to accommodate the selfie camera and the earpiece.

As seen on several smartphones, the manufactures have embedded the earpiece in the top bezel which is considerably easy to attain. Apart from this, companies like Samsung and Motorola have developed smartphones that have a punch hole in the display that houses the selfie camera.

Nonetheless, taking this innovation a step further, smartphone manufacturers have been developing invisible under-display camera. A handful of companies that already previewed devices with this feature include Oppo and Xiaomi.

Not long ago, Korean smartphone maker, LG had filed a patent with KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) which indicates that it is also developing a smartphone with invisible selfie camera technology which sounds promising.LG smartphone Invisible Selfie Camera

The patent granted to the company shows two different illustrations, out of which, the first one exhibits a smartphone with an edge to edge display without any punch hole. But the second illustration reveals when the camera application is toggled, the selfie camera manifests itself which stays concealed under the display.

Unfortunately, the patent granted to LG does not reveal any fine details like the features, name or specs of the handset. It is assumed that the technology that will be developed with this device will be incorporated in future smartphones made by LG.

In order to gain more details about the LG smartphone, we will have to wait patiently until the company publicises concrete information about it.

Mobile World Congress 2019 is the largest mobile industry expo in the world which was held in Spain on Feb 2019. The Chinese market being one of the larger markets with its own set of exclusive devices from various company receives its very own MWC at Shanghai which is scheduled for 26th to 28th June. OPPO one of the well-known smartphone manufacturers has confirmed its attendance at the Mobile World Congress 2019 on Weibo. A poster shared by the company clearly indicates that it is planning to launch the first under-display camera in the world.

Under-display camera smartphones essentially have its front camera within the front display but unlike a punch-hole module cannot be seen. The screen entirely encompasses the front panel with the camera under it. Earlier this month, Oppo had showcased its first functional prototype to the world, as did Xiaomi. Most OEMs have adopted a pop-up camera (like OnePlus 7 Pro) or rotating camera modules (such as Samsung Galaxy A80) for the full display solution. These are currently almost exclusively found in top-end or high mid-end range smartphones.

A short clip was previously shared by an OPPO executive which showcased a smartphone with the praiseworthy feature. It is uncertain if the aforementioned device is a prototype that is under development or an initial version of a smartphone that would be available commercially. The device had no visible seam for a front camera and had a full display panel at the front. This has probably given the world its first look into completely bezel-less smartphones.

The smartphone industry is one of the most volatile markets in the world. New is generally outdated in a quarterly cycle whilst any sci-fi dream of today is a reality within a year. Popular Entertainment such as movies have frequently showcased futuristic gadgets and handsets, and now our lives edge closer to them. No indication or otherwise have been provided regarding when the device will be available or even what the model/name would be. However, these innovational strides in the industry are always a positive sight.

Innovation regarding smartphone cameras is an ongoing process in the current scenario. Instances from the past include the first pop-up camera, which was introduced in the Vivo Nex in the year 2018. In constant strife to eliminate notches in smartphone displays, brands such as Samsung and ASUS launched the Galaxy A80 and Zenfone 6 respectively, which feature rotating camera systems. However, Chinese brands Oppo and Xiaomi have posted videos that showcase smartphones with under-display selfie cameras in all their glory.

A senior Oppo executive allegedly shared a short video clip of a prototype smartphone sans a notch. When the camera app was launched, the screen displayed a view of the room’s ceiling, whereas no front camera can be spotted in the video. To confirm that the camera being showcased is an under-display module, the VP hovered his finger above the spot where the selfie camera is supposed to be, and as expected, it was visible on the display.

On the other hand, Xiaomi also posted a video which showcases two smartphones held next to each other. The device on the right features a waterdrop style notch, whereas the one on the left has no notch at all. After the camera application was launched, the user of the device switched to the front camera, which was placed under the display and hence wasn’t visible at all.

As further stated by the Oppo executive, an under-display camera would imply that there will be one less fragile component in the device to worry about. Moreover, there will be no physical wear and tear regarding such a camera module. However, a significant loss in optical quality may be experienced in the early stages of development as stated by the company.

Nonetheless, this unveil may be an indication that Oppo’s sister company, Vivo might also be working on a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The company previously hinted at such a feature in the Vivo Apex 2019 concept smartphone. Since the smartphone was devoid of any notch and ports, it is expected that the device will be launched with an under-display selfie camera.

LG Patents Phone With Under-Display Camera

Everyone thought the future had arrived when Apple showcased the iPhone X with the notch and the almost bezel-less display. But there lies the beauty of technology, as it never remains stagnant. After the launch of the iPhone X, and it’s huge demand, other phone manufacturers understood that bezel-less and notch-less screens are the way forward. But all these companies faced two major issues in making a 100% screen-to-body-ratio phone; the front camera and the connector that attaches the screen component to the motherboard. Apple patented a technology where they could solve the issue of the screen connector by folding the screen underneath itself. But the front camera issue still prevailed.

    The Way Around

Many manufacturers made the notch smaller, a U-shaped notch, a V-shaped teardrop notch and more. Many decided to make mechanical and physical moving parts so that the camera could slide out when needed. But the latest trend in hiding the small front camera has been patenting phones with the cameras hidden underneath the display. Samsung was rumoured to have been working on such a phone. But now it seems LG has patented a phone with a similar technology as well.

According to a news website, the patent has been filed in South Korea and has two different designs. One of the designs has a curved edge and the other one has a straight edge. The notch placements also vary on the patent. It can be in the middle or the top left or top right of the screen. While LG has already worked extensively on curved displays, this may be new territory for the company. Even through they have patented the designs, it is not clear when we will get to see these phones. But we look forward to technologies like this in the years to come as we truly move into the future of smartphones.
