Flipkart Launches Its Video Streaming Service To Take On Amazon Prime Video

The video streaming service market in India has risen substantially in the last few years. What used to be dominated by YouTube has split into various applications featuring TV shows and movies spanning different genres. The latest addition in the space is one of the biggest e-commerce players in the country, Flipkart. The company has launched its own video service in the Indian market via its mobile shopping app. While it has not explicitly said so, the company aims at giving Amazon’s Prime Video service a run for its money with the latest service.

The latest video streaming service from Flipkart is visible in the Android application for the shopping website. With the current version 6.17, two new options have been added to the hamburger menu on the top left of the home screen. While the former is an Ideas section meant to help the users in terms of their shopping needs, the latter is the Video section; which is comprised of various movies and TV shows from key media players in the streaming segment such as Arre, Dice Media, TVF and Voot. Flipkart has said in the past that it will not focus on creating original video content initially, but may get into the idea if more people are interested in the platform.

The video streaming service offered by Flipkart will be free to watch for any registered user of the application. The platform is ad-supported, which means even later, users will not have to pay anything to consume the content offered. While the service is only available for Android users as of now, it is expected that an iOS update pertaining to the Ideas and Video service will be released soon. With the entry of a major enterprise like Flipkart in the video streaming market of India, we expect the competition to heat up in the following months.

It is no surprise Disney has some of the most extensive collection of TV shows and movies, including the hugely popular Avengers movies. The Disney+ streaming service will house almost every Disney animated movie ever made, along with some special ones brought in from other platforms. Simpsons, a widely known animated series, will be made exclusively available to the platform. Along with it, movies like the latest Captain Marvel, last year’s Black Panther and more. More series based on the characters in the Avengers movies like Scarlet Witch, Loki, Black Widow, Winter Soldier and Falcon is also in the works.

The Disney+ video streaming service will compete with other platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. An advantage the former will have over its competitors is a bundled Hulu and ESPN+ subscription which the company says may be bundled with Disney+. The vast lineup of shows and movies that the entertainment giant owns is expected to make the platform popular among enthusiasts.

  • Netflix May Finally Launch in India

Netflix May Finally Launch in India

Popular video-streaming service Netflix is finally going to come to India, according to reports by Hindu Business Line. The announcement of Netflix in India will likely be made at the upcoming Consumer Electronic Show 2016 that will take place in the coming weeks. Netflix has been eying India for a while now, but did not make any headway due to piracy and slow internet speeds in the country.

Now, it looks like the company is ready to launch its service in the country and will tie up with an Indian telecom company for its 4G network. Presumably, this company will be Airtel as currently it is the only operator in the country that has made its mark in the 4G domain, though Reliance is joining in too, having launched its 4G service for its employees just last week.

    Netflix-01

Netflix is a subscription-based service where one can stream television programmes and movies legally. The service is well established in over 50 countries with around 62 million subscribers. The company has also expressed interest in entering Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea markets by early 2016. We’ll have to wait and see if fans in India will finally be able to enjoy binging on their favourites shows on Netflix soon.
