Hands On : Xiaomi Mi 5 Unboxing

Xiaomi Mi 5 launched in India early but left a lot of people disappointed with its high price tag of 24999 for the base variant. Which by chance is the only option available in India on the April 6th sale and that too only in the white color.

The Mi 5 is extremely light weight for the specs it is packing, weighing in at a little over 130 gms. (Xiaomi claims 129 gms)

Inside the box of the Mi5 You will get :

    • The Mi 5 Handset
    • USB Wall Brick
    • USB Type C Cable
    • Documentation
    • Sim Ejector Tool

The handset on the back tapers just like the Galaxy S7 giving it an excellent grip in the hand. The cameras are impressive with f/2.0 aperture on the rear as well as the front camera. The front camera has a 2-micron pixel size and a 1/3″ sensor which in itself is pretty massive for a smartphone.

Xiaomi may have pushed a whole lot of customers away by pricing the phone at a higher than expected Rs. 24999. However, for the price, it is extremely premium and loaded with high-end specs. What is a bigger let down is the availability of only one model and only one color of the handset in the market, where the customer is left struggling to make that decision.

The Snapdragon 820 chipset along with a 3000 mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0 is a significant upside of the new Mi 5, however, so is the set of cameras and the overall premium look and feel.

We will be reviewing the handset shortly.

It is held it will be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset with either 3GB or 4GB RAM and will be juiced by a 3,000mAh battery. The leaks also suggested that the Mi5 will be priced at CNY 2,399 (approximately Rs. 24,500).

News and reports of its larger cousin, the Mi5 Plus is yet to be announced. Going by the specs, the Mi 5 Plus will feature a 6-inch screen with 4GB RAM, 32GB internal memory and a 16MP primary camera.

Meanwhile, another of Xiaomi’s smartphones expected to be launched in 2015 is the Redmi Note 2, the successor to the popular Redmi Note of 2014. Acknowledging the fact that the Redmi Note was launched in July 2014, there is a good chance that its successor could be unveiled during the 16 July event. But, let us wait till Thursday to find out.

New Details About Xiaomi Mi5 Emerges, Hints a Power Packed Phone

It has been ages since we last heard anything about the rumored Mi5. It was speculated that Xiaomi would launch the successor to Mi4 earlier this year, but instead the company released the Mi4i, which soon became a bestseller. Today, a report has emerged which says that the company will launch Mi5 in the November.

Codenamed “Libra”, the phone will sport a 5.3 inch QHD display, which is consistent with the previous rumors about Mi5. The phone will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 64-bit chipset paired with a 4GB RAM. Xiaomi Mi5 will come in two variants -16GB and 64GB version. Since Xiaomi always considers Apple its main competitor, the phone will include fingerprint scanner and run on a 3,030mAh battery. Also, it will have a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a 6-megapixel front camera.

The phone will run on Android Lollipop based MIUI OS. Xiaomi will also offer another variant, Mi5 Plus, which would basically be a bigger version of Mi5, just like Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The phone is rumored to come with a 6 inch display with 2K resolution, 4GB RAM with 32GB storage capacity and 16 MP rear camera. While nothing has been mentioned about the price, some rumors claim that Mi5 is slated to be priced around Rs. 23,900.

Should the rumor turn out to be true, Mi5 will become one of the strongest performing phones in the market. We hope Xiaomi announces Mi5 as early as possible.

4 Important Announcements to Look Forward to This Week

In the coming days, India will be enticed with the arrival of many new products by popular companies; namely, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Asus and Micromax. Some of the companies have attempted to keep things mysterious, but we’re fairly certain we’ll be seeing some heavy-hitting devices unveiled.

Here’s everything you should expect to see this week:

    Xiaomi

Last week Xiaomi announced a ‘Global Mi Phone Premiere’ which will take place in New Delhi on 23rd of April. The company had tweeted about the same and the image read as ‘I Is Coming’. It may well be possible that a new handset, likely the Mi5 or the Mi 4i, may be unveiled. But, we cannot be too sure of that. The conference will be addressed by Lei Jung, CEO and Co-Founder, Bin Lin, President and Co-Founder and Hugo Barra, Vice President of Xiaomi Global.

    OnePlus

OnePlus teased a new product that will be unveiled on 20th of April. The poster reads ‘You’re Invited’ along with a tagline ‘From here on out, anything could happen.’ The new product is highly anticipated to be the OnePlus Two since last year, around the same time, OnePlus launched their flagship phone, the OnePlus One. Although, there is a catch. At the MWC 2015, OnePlus had teased a gaming console. Gaming device or the next flagship? We will find out soon enough.

    ASUS

Asus first showcased the Zenfone 2 at the Consumers Electronic Show last year in Las Vegas. India will be receiving three variants of the handset. Powered by a 3,000 mAh battery and running on a 64-bit 2.3GHz Intel Atom processor Z3580 with PowerVR G6430 GPU, the Zenfone is packed for power and performance. More details of the device will be unraveled at the launch event that will take place on 23rd April.

To know more about its specs and features here.

    Micromax

In a series of tweets, Micromax disclosed that it is all set to release its newest affordable smartphone, the Canvas Spark. The device is said to have a 4.4-inch display and is expected to be priced at Rs. 6,000. Also, the presence Snapdeal logo confirms an exclusive partnership between the two companies for online sales. The event will take place on 21st April.

  • Xiaomi to Raise Curtains Off its Next Flagship Killer on 15th January

Xiaomi to Raise Curtains Off its Next Flagship Killer on 15th January

After a very successful year, where Xiaomi managed to became the most valued startup, the company is now about to bring out its next flagship product. The company has sent out invites for the launch event set for 15th of January. According to the office MIUI thread, the launch will take place at 2.00 PM Beijing time. The page doesn’t specifically state what new device they’re launching, but the general agreement is that this launch is for the Mi5.

The post asks the users on the thread to vote on what phone they expect Xiaomi is launching with the option given as Mi4s, Mi5 and others. With 70% in favour, Mi5 leads the polls.

The invite only says that Xiaomi will unveil a new device on Jan 15.
The invite only says that Xiaomi will unveil a new device on Jan 15.

This upcoming premium launch by Xiaomi is expected to sport a 5.7 inches QHD display. It will get is processing might from the 64-bit Snapdragon 810 SoC which will be supported by Adreno 430 graphics engine and 3 GB RAM. It will offer 16 GB internal memory and feature a fingerprint sensor. It is also expected to flaunt a 20.7 MP camera with Sony Exmor RS sensor.

There are also speculations that Xiaomi might unveil the new Mi Pad 2. It is expected to feature a 7.9-inch display with 2048X1536 resolution. It will come with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. This does look like a quality update to the Mi Pad line and the resolution of the display might attract a good number of consumers.

If Xiaomi prices it as competitively as it usually does, then it sure would have a winner on its hands. With the specs being offered in this edition of Mi smartphone, Xiaomi is directly challenging the authority of the flagship devices. Having knocked off Samsung from the top spot in China, Xiaomi has seriously taken a bullish approach to the market. Let’s hope it lasts long and encourages other manufacturers to duplicate Xiaomi’s business model and give consumers more functionality at affordable costs.

  • According to Xiaomi President, Mi5 to Arrive Next Month

According to Xiaomi President, Mi5 to Arrive Next Month

Xiaomi looks upbeat and in a mood to surprise. The upcoming device by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Mi5, has already created quite a buzz in town and now the Co-Founder and President of the company, Bin Lin has disclosed that their new flagship smartphone would be unveiled in January.

Along with the revelation of a $1.1 billion funding, Bin mentioned in his post,

In January 2015, we will be unveiling our next flagship device.

However, Bin didn’t disclose the exact date of its arrival, GizChina claims that the device will launch by 15th of January, 2015.

Few days back, some pictures of the Mi5 were spotted on the internet, which demonstrated most of its display specifications.

The website also stated that the phone would have a 5.7-inch QHD display with 2560×1440 pixels resolution. It will be powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor along with Adreno 430 GPU and 3 GB of RAM. The Mi5 is said to feature a massive 20.7MP front camera coupled with a fingerprint scanner and Sony Exmor sensor.

Lei Jun, founder and CEO of China's mobile company Xiaomi, speaks at launch ceremony of Xiaomi Phone 4 in Beijing

There are also rumours about the expected launch of Mi Pad 2 and Redmi Note 2 (temporarily titled). The Mi Pad 2 is expected to sport a 7.9-inch screen. Meanwhile the successor of Redmi Note is rumored to have a 5.5-inch display along with a 64-bit Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and 8 MP camera.

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4G will go on sale on 30th December. The specs quoted for the next generation Mi device seems to put it directly on top of the food chain. Xiaomi has already become the third biggest smartphone company in the world. This flagship may be a direct assault on the big boys; Apple and Samsung. And if Xiaomi prices the device as competitively as it has done in the past, this might again be a big winner for the company. Seems like there’s no force yet which might stop Xiaomi’s roaring momentum.
