Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Launched in India (Hands On)

Samsung today announced the introduction of the Galaxy Tab 3 311 (8-inch screen) and Galaxy Tab 3 211 (7-inch screen) in India. These tablets are a follow up to the popular Galaxy Tab 2 series. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 211 (7″) is priced at Rs. 17,745, Tab 3 311 (8″) at Rs. 25,725 and the  Wi-Fi only Tab 3 310 (8″) at Rs. 21,945.

We went hands-on with the devices.

Specifications and Hardware :

The 7 inch Galaxy Tab 3 is powered by a 1.2 ghz dual core processor, supported with 1GB of RAM. The 7 inch screen has a 1024×600 panel with 169ppi density. There are 8GB and 16GB versions available, with a Micro SD card slot allowing additional storage up to 64GB. The tablet runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The 8 inch Galaxy Tab 3 is more powerful, featuring a 1.5ghz dual core processor with 1.5GB of RAM. It has a 5 MP rear camera and a 1.3 MP front facing camera. The screen is of a higher resolution at 1280×800. There are 32GB and 64GB versions available with another 64GB offered via the microSD card. The tablet has a 4,450mAh battery and runs Jelly Bean 4.2 with Wifi only and 3G versions.

Initial Impressions

The first thing that you will notice when you see the tablets is that they’re, as usual, of the same Samsung style design. However, the tablets are really slim and lightweight. The 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 has 7.4mm thickness and it really helps in somewhat easing one handed operation.

The design cues are the same though. Curved, rounded edges with a large display and a physical home button. Following the tradition, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 also has 2 touch capacitive buttons next to the home button.

You have a Galaxy S4 – type bezel running around the edge of the tablets, and the back panel has a glossy finish to it which, unfortunately, attracts finger prints.

The displays though, despite their low pixel densities are surprisingly clear. The colour reproductions and viewing angles are good as well. Samsung also touts the Reading Mode on these devices which adjusts the displays to make reading text easier on your eyes.

The software on these 2 tablets again has all the goodies that comes along with Samsung (TouchWiz) devices. Due to the large screen sizes, Multi-Window is relatively easier to use on these devices than on it’s smartphone siblings.

These devices are one of several Samsung has released with a Dropbox bonus of 50GB of cloud storage added on to your account – or added to a brand new account – for 2 years from the point at which you access said space.

Stay tuned for our full review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

I think a simple message to all is:
    1. Look what basically you want from a phone, why do you see specs and decide. I mean why buy gadgets at high prices. Remember all features will not be given in single gadget.

A tab shouldn’t even exist beyond the 17k mark if it can’t cross Nexus 7’s specs… Samsung has been too lazy with their products lately.

I don’t think spec is too good. ppi is very bad. Not even 200. I expected at least 250. And still it is costlier than Nexus 7.

While the specs of 7 inch version is quite underwhelming and I don’t see many people paying around 17-18 k for this Tab. The 8 inch version has better specs and a bit better design, but I don’t understand why would u need physical buttons on a Tab. Does that mean that the device is meant to be used in portrait mode only? Ridiculous. And by the way why would you buy this Tab( 8 inch version) for almost 25 k when u can buy a much better Nexus 7 3G with much better specs and performance at around 21 k? Samsung has shot themselves in their feet.
