Official Speedtest App For Windows Phone 8 Released

    windows phone

Owners of Windows Phone 8 devices can now download and install a new application on their devices, namely Speedtest.net, which has been available for other mobile platforms out there for quite some time now.

The Speedtest.net web interface has been used by millions of people all over the world to test whether or not they are getting what they pay for from their ISPs. The site was originally launched to provide performance indicators of the tested network, but has grown to include a portfolio of official mobile apps as well as a reporting mechanism to see how ISPs around the world are performing, with the idea in mind that being able to name and shame companies should keep service providers honest. Windows Phone 8 users can now count themselves as part of the official experience.

The application already has millions of users, and arrives on Windows Phone 8 devices with the same features and capabilities as on other platforms.

One word of note though: judging by the comments left on the application it appears that some owners of the Lumia 920 on USA’s AT&T are having issues running the program, but the majority of people who have downloaded the application, on the other hand, say that it works as intended. They also seem to dig the new user interface.

Speedtest.net is a free app for Windows Phone 8 devices and you can find it here in the Windows Phone Store.

  • Leaked Samsung Roadmap Hints At 4.99-inch Full HD Galaxy S4 Coming Before March

Leaked Samsung Roadmap Hints At 4.99-inch Full HD Galaxy S4 Coming Before March

    galaxy

Samsung’s next big flagship device – presumably called the Galaxy S IV – has been in the rumour mill since September. Here’s a quick summary of what circling around the web: run a version of Android (possibly Key Lime Pie, but most likely Jelly Bean), larger display at 5-inches with a 441 pixels per inch (ppi), a quad-core processor and a 13-megapixel camera.

An interesting picture has surfaced from the halls of CES 2013. AnandTech captured some images from Samsung’s demonstrations that shows they’ll potentially release a device in Q1 2013 with a full HD 1080P AMOLED display, sporting a 4.99-inches with 440 pixels per inch (PPI). This is somewhat congruent with all the previous GS IV rumours. In addition, you can see the Galaxy S III (4.8-inches) and Note II (5.5-inches) launches from last year all line up nicely with the Q2 and Q3 2012 specs.

Samsung is also claiming a 25 percent power saving using a new material on new AMOLED revisions, and also has a low power mode that I don’t know much about with 47 percent power savings.

Additional rumours point to the GS IV launching in May… so if this slide is correct we could see them announce something at Mobile World Congress next month.

  • TRAI says that the current tariff is fine

    trai

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in a move to calm worried telecom firms reeling under huge losses, has said on Monday that the current tariffs are not objectionably high and are good for competitive environment.

The major issue on the mind of the TRAi being the deactivation of inactive mobile connections, TRAI said that the recommendations for the same should be finalized by March.
The mobile tariffs are competitive. We could not find that tariffs have been in any objectionable territory, In normal course, it (the recommendations) should take one-and-a-half-month more from now,”Rajeev Agarwal, secretary,TRAI
Recently again many firms have hiked data tariffs by 25-30% to improve margins. TRAI sought views of stakeholders on the need to review the existing regime of tariff forbearance. Views were also sought on a suitable tariff framework for data services.

While deactivation of a SIM without prior intimation and on arbitrary grounds has become an issue of debate as it deprives a subscriber of his mobile number which might have been an identity for him for a long time.

According to a consultation paper floated by TRAI, consumers can also suffer from a potential loss of activity in both personal and professional set-ups causing an adverse impact on livelihood.

Last year the telecom tribunal had also rejected the telecom operators’ petition against TRAI’s guidelines on VAS which asked operators to take prior confirmation before activating and charging subscribers for such services and asked them to comply with the directive by February 2.

In 2011, TRAI’s directives said that an operator was required to obtain confirmation from their subscribers through SMS, e-mail, fax or in writing within 24 hours of activation of VAS.

  • Apple Stock slips after report of waning iPhone Sales

Apple Stock slips after report of waning iPhone Sales

    AppleStore

After an unconfirmed report of the iPhones sales dropping in December, Apple investors seem to be dropping out of the bite.  Investors briefly drove Apple stock below $500 on Monday, continuing a slide from a peak of more than $700 in September.

This continued downfall has increased the pressure on the pending January 23rd Earnings call that would lead to immediate reforms for the company. If Apple wildly exceeds expectations, as it did last year, investors hope the Apple stock will repeat the remarkable run that peaked in September.

But if the earnings disappoint, or if Apple execs reduce their sales projections for the coming quarter, there’s no telling how far Apple stock that’s already down 28.5% in the last three months could plummet. Apple’s stock closed Monday at $501.75, down $18.55, or 3.57%.

Like many Apple rumors and stories, however, this latest development was open to different interpretations. Many analysts and independent observers suggested indications that Apple had cut its outlook for the iPhone 5 by as much as half seemed extreme, given recent reports of strong smartphone sales by Verizon Wireless and AT&T.

Another view could have been the early launch of a revised iPhone, that possibly has a different size or type of display. A newer iPhone, a newer iPad and a retina iPad mini are all the correct tools that Apple needs to drive stock back up to the wonderful $700 mark.

  • Flipboard For Android 4.2 Gets Daydream Support

Flipboard For Android 4.2 Gets Daydream Support

    flipboard

Flipboard for Android has been updated at a decent clip recently, and its most recent overhaul brings a nice new feature that only Android 4.2 users can take advantage of.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean introduced something called “Daydream,” where the phone or tablet goes into a sort of screensaver mode when docked or charged. This keeps the screen on and allows for a number of apps, either first- or third-party, to interact with the OS. For example, Google allows a simple clock widget to bounce around the screen, while apps like Beautiful Widgets and StumbleUpon have taken advantage of the mode to show rotating bits of photo and text.

Flipboard Daydream mode shows off news covers, gorgeous HD images with text overlaid. It’s a small but important feature that differentiates the Android version from its iOS counterpart, and grants those few Android 4.2 users a chance to take advantage of their shiny new devices.

Hopefully, more developers start making use of this feature in their apps. And more devices get the Android 4.2 update so people can use this feature.

  • Made In India Ford Ecosport Will Be Shipped To South Africa

Made In India Ford Ecosport Will Be Shipped To South Africa

    Ford Ecosport

Ford believes its upcoming sub-4 metre long SUV, Ford Ecosport, will give it a “nimble” edge in the market. Ford India’s President and Managing Director, Michael Boneham is pleased with all the action in the compact SUV segment. Competitor Renault has already launched the Duster SUV; Mahindra is rolling out its mini SUV, Quanto. Maruti and Hyundai are also said to be gearing up for this segment.

Ford plans to launch the Ecosport, which it showcased at the Auto Expo in January, in the first quarter of 2013, in both petrol and diesel versions.

The Ford Ecosport will also be launched in South Africa next year. This seems like a logical step as the South African car market is very similar to the Indian market and the fact that the right-hand drive versions of the Eco-Sport will be manufactured at the American automakers plant outside Chennai.

While the Indian market is likely to get a 1.5-litre diesel engine variant of the car along with the 1.0-litre 128bhp Ecoboost petrol engine, the South African car market will get only the latter. It will join the Ford Kuga compact SUV, new Ford Fiesta as well as the Transit van as Ford’s offering in South Africa for 2013.

The Ford Ecosport has already been launched in China, Brazil and Argentina where it has achieved a considerable level of success. It is likely that Ford is banking on the EcoSport to achieve the same level of success that the Figo hatchback and the Ikon sedan achieved when they were launched.

Boneham said being a sub 4-metre car, Ecosport will enjoy the excise duty benefits of a small car, providing the company “flexibility” in pricing. But the compact SUV category will not cannibalise the market for sedans, said Boneham, adding that it will provide a new choice and address a “white space” in the market. It will create excitement among car buyers, said Boneham. Ecosport will be rolled out of Ford’s plant in Maraimalainagar, Chennai. Ford is investing Rs 750 crore in the plant for the Ecosport launch.

Developers Submit 15K BlackBerry 10 Apps In Less Than Two Days

    blackberry

Research In Motion reported that developers submitted 15,000 applications for its new BlackBerry 10 operating system during a virtual Community Port-A-Thon event running over the weekend. This is an impressive number and only confirms the interest in building apps for RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS.

“37.5 hours in, we hit 15,000 apps for this portathon,” BlackBerry Development Head Alec Saunders tweeted. “Feel like I’ve run a marathon.”

The Port-A-Thon, which kicked off at noon ET on Jan. 11, awarded developers $100 for each eligible mobile app or game approved for BB 10. Developers who submitted between five and 10 approved apps were also given a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device; in addition, the first 10 developers with 10 approved apps were given a paid trip to BlackBerry Jam Europe 2013, taking place in Amsterdam early next month.

Frank Boulben, RIM’s CMO, recently noted that “at launch we will have more than 70,000 apps available. RIM is 16 days away from officially unveiling BlackBerry 10 and the two new BB 10 smartphones.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is one of the highest selling cars in the history of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. The Wagon R, which got a comprehensive model update a couple of years back, has now got a mild facelift to remain fresh in the market.

It may be noted that MSIL realizes the need to regularly spruce up its small cars to fend off the ever increasing competition.

The changes are minimal; however the company claims to improve engine’s efficiency. The makers boast an OBD II complaint engine including other changes that make the vehicle eight percent more efficient than its 2010 edition.

The updated version is powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder K Series petrol motor while power and torque remain unchanged. The car once again will be offered in CNG and Petrol variants. Also the front bumper, headlights and grill are re-designed.

Talking of the interior, beige and black combination gives it a fresh, up class feel along with increased storage space just above the glove box. The best part is improved audio unit which enables USB connectivity. The day/night inside rear view mirror is a cherry on top.

The prices for Maruti Suzuki’s face lifted Wagon R may be announced next week and an increase of 0.5 percent to 2 percent is expected.

  • New Java 7 Malware Surfaces, Apple Blocks Plug-in on OS X

New Java 7 Malware Surfaces, Apple Blocks Plug-in on OS X

    java

As noted by ZDNet, a major security vulnerability in Java 7 has been discovered, with the vulnerability currently being exploited in the wild by malicious parties. In response to threat, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has recommended that users disable the Java 7 browser plug-in entirely until a patch is made available by Oracle.
Hackers have discovered a weakness in Java 7 security that could allow the installation of malicious software and malware on machines that could increase the chance of identity theft, or the unauthorized participation in a botnet that could bring down networks or be used to carry out denial-of-service attacks against Web sites.

“We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem,” said the DHS’ Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) in a post on its Web site on Thursday evening. “This vulnerability is being attacked in the wild, and is reported to be incorporated into exploit kits. Exploit code for this vulnerability is also publicly available.”
Apple has, however, apparently already moved quickly to address the issue, disabling the Java 7 plug-in on Macs where it is already installed. Apple has achieved this by updating its “Xprotect.plist” blacklist to require a minimum of an as-yet unreleased 1.7.0_10-b19 version of Java 7. With the current publicly-available version of Java 7 being 1.7.0_10-b18, all systems running Java 7 are failing to pass the check initiated through the anti-malware system built into OS X.

The exploit has been described by Sophos as a zero-day attack since it has been found being actively used in malware before developers have had a chance to investigate and patch it. The exploit is currently under review at the National Vulnerability Database and has been given an ID number CVE-2013-0422, where it is still described as relatively unknown.

  • ST-Ericsson Reveals 2.5GHz NovaThor L8580 Smartphone Chip

    ST-Ericsson Reveals 2.5GHz NovaThor L8580 Smartphone Chip

    NovaThor L8580

CES 2013 was very fruitful when it came to new chipsets, ST-Ericsson followed the footsteps of Samsung, Qualcomm and NVIDIA to introduce the new NovaThor SoC.

ST-Ericsson confirmed the trend for better, faster, and smaller chipsets, when the manufacturer introduced its brand new NovaThor chipset at CES 2013 – the L8580. The announcement followed the new chipsets by Samsung, Qualcomm and NVIDIA.
”Building on the architecture of our first generation NovaThor L8540 LTE ModAp announced last year, we believe our new platform represents a real industry breakthrough,” said president and CEO Didier Lamouche in a statement announcing the new NovaThor L8580 LTE ModAp.
The NovaThor L8580 shares much in common with the earlier L8540, but there are significant differences, as well. On the things-in-common side, both are based on two ARM Cortex-A9 CPU cores and an Imagination PowerVR SGX544 GPU, which share the same die with a modem that supports LTE FDD/TDD (Cat.3), 42Mbps HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, and EDGE along with support for 1080p video at up to 60fps and a 10-megapixel camera.

That’s where the major similarities end, however – and that’s where the L8580 becomes more interesting. For one thing, the L8540 topped out at 1.85GHz, while the new L8580 is capable of speeds up to 2.5GHz.

The company claims that although the L8580’s CPU cores are 35 per cent faster than tha L8540’s and its GPU and multimedia accelerators are 20 per cent faster, it runs runs cooler when running at 2.5GHz and consumes up to 50 per cent less power than what the company coyly refers to as “rival architectures”.

That higher clock rate and cool, low-power performance are not the L8580’s only trick, however. It’s also the first of ST-Ericsson’s chips to employ a technology they call “eQuad,” which enables each core to not only spin at that speedy 2.5GHz, but also step down to a power-miserly 0.6-volt operation. ST-Ericsson didn’t say what clock rate that low-power mode could achieve, but they do claim that it provides “more than enough computing power for the majority of applications in everyday use.”

  • Liquipel Announces 2.0 Watersafe Nanocoating For Waterproofing Devices

Liquipel Announces 2.0 Watersafe Nanocoating For Waterproofing Devices

    Liquipel

Making phones or tablet waterproof or water resistant is nothing new. Many manufacturers have been including this added feature into their devices for years. Most recently is Sony with the newly announced Xperia Z. At CES this year Liquipel came back with version 2.0 of their self-sealing nano coating that protects your device from water/liquids.

Liquipel is a dry process that once applied, essentially becomes a part of the device. It will last the lifespan of the device and is completely invisible, but the results are anything but. Liquipel’s booth demo is quite convincing, even without showing the water resistance on a phone itself.

Apparently this second generation is 100 times better than the first go-around, plus can survive about 3.3 feet underwater for 30 minutes.

Though Liquipel did not previously offer a warranty for treated electronics and some users had experienced issues with devices treated with original Liquipel formula not surviving liquid exposure, the company announced its Liquipel Performance Guarantee at CES. The new warranty, which currently covers only U.S. customers but should be extended to other countries in the future, offers protection from damage due to accidental liquid exposure on Liquipel-treated devices.
The coverage excludes intentional submerging of devices in liquid. However, everyday life events that can cause liquid damage will be covered, such as: rain, splashing, sweat, dropping in the sink or toilet and spilled drinks.
Google Nexus 4 Gets Android 4.2.2 in Brazil and Malaysia

    nexus 4

While most of the world is seeing Android 4.2.1 as the latest version of Jelly Bean, it looks like Google has quietly begun rolling out something a bit newer. According to new reports, Google has begun rolling out Android 4.2.2 in select countries. So far the reports are pinpointing just two countries — Brazil and Malaysia.

According to a recent report, LG Mobile’s production facility situated in Taubaté, Brazil has already started churning out Nexus 4 smartphones today in hopes of catching up with the overwhelming demands, an interesting twist to this story is that at least a thousand of these quad-core packing monsters have — purportedly — been loaded with Google’s latest version of the Android Jelly Bean platform so don’t be surprised if the Nexus 4 you have ordered via the Play Store portal  will come running the Android 4.2.2 operating system.

Also, a new leak reveals the LG Nexus 4 in Malaysia running the new, unannounced software from Google.

True or not, we suggest taking this news with a grain of salt since it’s still unknown if the leaked image is legitimate — but, like we’ve previously mentioned, the fact that Google has stopped letting users download the Android 4.1.2 may give us a vague  clue as to what Google is really hiding up its sleeves and the Android 4.2.2 may just be the answer we’ve been waiting for.

Some of the first promotional material for the upcoming BlackBerry Z10, which we believe the final name to be, has emerged online. It shows off many of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 features, including the unannounced but highly-suspected BBM Video, which looks an awful lot like FaceTime. It has been said these slides are the official retail marketing for BlackBerry 10, but we’d surely hope RIM would do a way, way better job.

RapidBerry also got its hands on photos of the white and black versions of the upcoming device, and these high-quality stills really show the thoughtful design of the phone and the interesting UI design. These device images are clearly quite old, though, as the app icons are placed in the old, boxy wrapping that has since been updated. The Twitter icon uses the deprecated design, and BlackBerry World is still called App World, though it is cited correctly in the slide headline. These were likely slides shown to carriers or partners.

All of the leaked photos are down in the slideshow so check them out if you’re curious about the upcoming BlackBerry 10 smartphones and the BlackBerry Z10 in particular.N

As we get closer to January 30th, more of these glimpses into BlackBerry 10 will probably get out, and we can’t wait to see the finished result.
