  • Microsoft Developing a Windows 10 ROM For Android Devices

Microsoft Developing a Windows 10 ROM For Android Devices

Microsoft has announced today that it will be bringing its premier operating system, Windows 10 to 190 countries around the world this summer. The company also hinted at plans to expand its market share in the portable devices market. Microsoft’s collaboration with Xiaomi also led to many speculations in the market as to how the Chinese smartphone powerhouse would play in Microsoft’s plan to expand its mobile market share. The details aren’t out yet, but it seems Microsoft is offering a ROM that will replace Android to make Windows 10 the primary OS of a smartphone.

Microsoft has announced that under its deal with Xiaomi, a select group of Mi 4 ‘Power users’ will get a chance to test the new Windows 10. Xiaomi made clear that it is not a partnership between the two companies, and Xiaomi is just “assisting” Microsoft in its efforts.

The new ROM doesn’t offer dual-boot solution, and Windows 10 becomes the default OS of the smartphone. It is comparable to the CyanogenMod or any other custom ROM. The ROM is basically designed to get Android users to try Windows 10 native user interface and the Windows-centric apps. This, Microsoft hopes will encourage the users the to switch from Android to Windows OS.

Just like custom ROM's like CyanogenMod, users can easily install and try out Windows 10 on their Android devices.

At present, Microsoft is testing the ROM in China but it is definitely planning on expanding its reach to other countries. It has started with Xiaomi as the company has a proactive user base that constantly sends back feedback through the companies portal. Microsoft will find it easier to gather suggestions and feedbacks through Xiaomi’s already available infrastructure.

Microsoft is trying hard to find takers for its smartphone devices. According to the last IDC listing Android is a behemoth in the smartphone market which controls 82.3 percent of the global smartphone market followed by Apple’s iOS which holds 13.8 percent while Microsoft Windows Phone OS accounts for just 2.7 percent at present.

Microsoft has also talked about introducing advanced features which let users connect and work on their desktop and mobile devices seamlessly. If these features work in Microsoft’s favour, you can anticipate a rise in Microsoft’s smartphone market share because in the desktop OS space, Microsoft still rules with a comfortable majority. In fact, at present, the various Windows OS’s (Windows 7,8, 8.1) are running on over 69% of the computers while Windows XP accounts for about 19% of the global market. By offering unique interconnectivity features, Windows can attract its massive desktop user base to give its smartphone ecosystem a try.

  • OnePlus Assures Lollipop, OxygenOS Updates Arrive Before March End

OnePlus Assures Lollipop, OxygenOS Updates Arrive Before March End

OnePlus has put an end to the speculations. The Chinese company has provided a set release date for Lollipop updates on One devices, and it looks like the firm will not keep its huge fans waiting too long. Earlier, the Chinese electronics producer issued the upgrade launch date and had disappointed the customers by not delivering the same. But this time, OnePlus has spread a word through the official forum page of its website saying that Android Lollipop will be available on or before March 30.

The company declared the precise launch date of the update:

CM 12S: The official OTA update for the OnePlus One will be released on or before March 30, 2015

OxygenOS: The official release of our own Lollipop-based ROM will be available for download on or before March 27, 2015

The official forum page of OnePlus mentions the reasons behind the delayed Lollipop update roll out. The firm remarks that unforeseen complications like OS singing issue, instability of the camera module and many crucial driver flaws cropping in the new Lollipop version.

Not only this, to make its customers believe that they will release the new update unfailingly, OnePlus has made a bold statement of giving away five 64GB OnePlus One devices in case it misses either of the deadlines. Well, this shows how dedicated OnePlus is to keeping its promise.

  • The Wait is Over, Windows 10 Arriving in 190 Countries This Summer

The Wait is Over, Windows 10 Arriving in 190 Countries This Summer

Ever since Microsoft announced the latest iteration of the Windows operating system last year, users have been patiently waiting for its arrival in the market. The demos presented by the company has got the market excited for the plethora of cool features. Microsoft also corrects its blunder of removing the start menu in its last offering by bring back the menu in Windows 10. The company is now ready to bring the latest OS to its customers worldwide and will be launching it this summer in 190 countries.

Microsoft will offer a one-year free upgrade which will be available to the customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Users can choose from 111 language options for the new operating system.

Terry Myerson of Microsoft commented on the official blog post –

We continue to make great development progress and shared today that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages.

Microsoft has a strategic plan to roll out Windows 10 in China. The firm stated that it would partner with leading companies like Lenovo, Tencent and Qihu 360 to deliver the new Windows OS to its customers. As said earlier, more countries will soon get the update by summer this year.

    continuum windows 10

Along with announcing the launch time of Windows 10, Microsoft brought out few more interesting tools to make computing more personal. Windows Hello is one of the recent features added on Windows 10. This innovative offering eliminates the need for passwords and gives instant access to your devices through biometric authentication, i.e. analyzing your face, iris or fingerprint.

Microsoft has also put major focus on Internet of Things(IoT) devices with this new launch. This advanced Windows OS will also work with major institutional devices like ATM’s, ultrasound machines, gateways, and more. The company plans to connect with more machines and is in talks to collaborate with companies lke the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Intel, Qualcomm and other tech organizations.

One revelation that caught the eye was that Microsoft signing up with Chinese smartphone Xiaomi for the developmental of Windows 10. A select group of Xiaomi Mi 4 power users will be invited to test Windows 10 and share their feedback with the company. Seems like Microsoft is trying everything its powers to capture some of Android’s massive market share. Microsoft though would not have to convince the massive number of Windows desktop users as they would be elated to get the free upgrade and of course the Start menu that comes with it.

  • Details of Xiaomi Mi Note Plus Revealed

Details of Xiaomi Mi Note Plus Revealed

It’s safe to say, Xiaomi has been on a roll. It has unveiled several new smartphones in the market, which are undoubtedly remarkable and are gaining fame for being reasonable priced. The Chinese smartphone brand showcased a new smartphone line back in January called Mi Note, which comprises of Xiaomi Mi Note and Mi Note Pro. It appears like the firm has one more device in the Mi Note series to offer which is being worked on secretly.

A new premium device showed up on GeekBench that speaks of the high specifications of the forthcoming device. It also illustrated the benchmark scores of Mi Note Plus, along with Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9. According to the cross-platform processor benchmark, Xiaomi Mi Note Plus sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 4GB of RAM, just like the Mi Note Pro. The device will run on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

    mi mote plus

From the revelations, it is observed that the fundamental specifications of the Plus version of Mi Note are identical to Mi Note Pro. Also the GeekBench scores, the Mi Note Plus stood close to HTC One M9 with single-core score at 1282 and multi-core score at 3928. The Mi Note Plus, on the other hand, scored 1235 and 4039 in single-core and multi-core score respectively.

We doubt Xiaomi’s new offering will give th Galaxy S6 tough competition, but given the price range of the Galaxy S6, the Mi Note Plus is expected to attract more customers. Recently, Lin Bin, Co-Founder and President of Xiaomi also hinted that a special edition of Mi Note would be coming out soon. The fresh device is expected to release today. It is uncertain if Xiaomi is pointing to the Plus version as the special edition, but once the firm makes the announcement, things will come to light.

  • OnePlus Reveals the Arrival Date of its Affordable 10,000mAh Powerbank

OnePlus Reveals the Arrival Date of its Affordable 10,000mAh Powerbank

Last year in December, OnePlus stepped into the portable charger segment and introduced the world its first-ever Power bank. Today, the company will launch the robust device with battery capacity of 10,000mAh. The official Google+ page of OnePlus reads, “Starting March 17. Are you ready to charge?”

The product can be launched today and is expected to be priced a little lesser than $15 (approximately Rs. 900). With a mammoth capacity of 10,000mAh, the upcoming OnePlus power bank can charge the 3100mAh battery of One device three times on a single charge. The powerful bank is ready for retail.

oneplus powerbank 2The overall look of the One Power bank is premium. The company has opted for smooth and rounded edges that give the compact charger a smooth finish. The battery weighs 220 grams and holds 16.2 mm thickness. The unit comes in two colours, Sandstone Black and Silver White. The company claims that the device takes 5.5 hours to charge completely.

OnePlus has launched many gadgets till date and the reason the company enjoys a vast user base is the affordable pricing. At $15, the One power bank can give tough competition to Xiaomi’s 10,400mAh power bank. A minor 400mAh difference will not attract the OnePlus fan base to Xiaomi as the One mobile battery has two USB ports instead of one. One can charge two devices at a time. Also, Xiaomi’s Mi Power Bank has been out of stock for quite some time on Flipkart. It’s the perfect time for OnePlus to jump in the game.

According to PhoneArena, OnePlus Power Bank will ship in the US on March 17. There is no word about its availability in India so far.

  • Apple Watch Rumoured to be Coming to India in June

Apple Watch Rumoured to be Coming to India in June

If rumours are to be believed, you might get a closer look at the Apple Watch sooner than you expected.  During the massive ‘Spring Forward’ event, Apple had announced the arrival date of the Apple Watch, however only for a few lucky countries.

  • Apple ResearchKit Gets Massive Sign Ups But Also Faces Some Concerns

Apple ResearchKit Gets Massive Sign Ups But Also Faces Some Concerns

During the latest Apple ‘Spring Forward’ event, one new feature that was somewhat overshadowed by the launch of the Apple Watch was ResearchKit. With this new software platform, Apple would involve users and health professionals to gather medical data which can be used to study various diseases. Apple might have found a successful way to crowdsource medical data.

Once the user gives ResearchKit the required permissions, it sends the users health data to Apple. The company then shares the data with doctors and scientists. The information can include the user’s weight, blood pressure and activity levels, as well as data on conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma and breast cancer. It lets iPhone users to become the source of information for massive research projects which would help advance medicine for the future.

At present, ResearchKit is only available on the iPhone, and it uses hardware resources like the accelerometer in the device to capture the user’s physical data. It will also let educational institutes and research facilities to create apps which can gather medical data securely.

    ResearchKit2
Using various tests and apps on the iPhone, users can easily monitor their health and also contribute to medical research.

The potential of the software has enticed many, and there have been huge signups for the service. In an interview, Apple chief Tim Cook said that about 11,000 people had signed up for the study using their iPhones in just 24 hours. Conventionally, it would have taken five medical centres over a year to gather up that many subjects.

But amongst the many encouraging responses, there are also some professionals who are raising concerns related to the new platform. The first and foremost is the security and privacy of the medical data. There cannot be a more personal data than the medical information of the person. This platform will keep a track of the signed up users twenty-four seven, and they have to trust Apple with this sensitive information.

    ResearchKit1
    The current areas of Research.

Apart from the privacy issues, there are also concerns that the data wouldn’t be as varied as Apple hopes it will be. As most of the iPhone buyers are financially independent and have college degrees, the data might not be all inclusive. But considering that the Apple smartphone is now available in almost all markets across the earth, it will lead to a massive amount of information from varied population that is not limited by geographies. Also, as the data is being collected through the iPhone’s internal sensors, it would be difficult to falsify the results, and the researchers will have access to quality health information.

ResearchKit has a long way to go, but it sure looks promising. It is an experiment worth considering by the medical community. Apple though has to come clear on its privacy policy for the platform and introduce it in clear language and illustrations that would be easy for anyone to understand. It should also engage Android and other OS users to join the platform to give the researchers a broader range of subjects to choose from. The smartphone ecosystem has finally evolved from mere communication devices to tools for bringing real world change.

  • Facebook Spells Out What Actions Can Get You Banned From The Service

Facebook Spells Out What Actions Can Get You Banned From The Service

The world’s largest social network Facebook is a powerful tool to connect with billions of people across the globe at any given time. With an active user base of 1.39 billion users, the responsibility for establishing the proper code of conduct for the website gets really tough for Facebook. This is why the biggest social network in the world has to constantly update its community policies. Facebook has now clearly spelt out what kind of actions are likely to get a user suspended from using their service.

The social networking giant has set a standard to make sure no nuisance befalls on the website and today the company has updated its community standards section to make clear what all is prohibited on the site. The company didn’t change the policy and instead provided details ‘on what is and is not allowed’.

Tailored News only gives us perspectives that we agree with creates a mental bubble.
Gratuitous nudity and violence will  definitely get you banned from the website

Without seizing the freedom to share and freedom of free expression from the users, Facebook gave a detailed policy description for nudity and hate speech; “We remove photographs of people displaying genitals or focusing in on fully exposed buttocks.” It said that “images of female breasts if they include the nipple” is unacceptable “but we always allow photos of women actively engaged in breast-feeding or showing breasts with post-mastectomy scarring.”

Facebook banned the terrorist organisations like ISIS a while back, and they also made clear that encouraging groups that show violent, criminal or hateful behaviour is also prohibited on their platform.

These measures have been taken to put an end to online bullying. Posting tailored images to degrade a person, and threatening someone for financial or physical harm is illegal and banned. The company has also opted strict rules for revenge porn videos where intimate images or videos of women are shared online without their consent to degrade them in public.

Meanwhile, it should also be taken into account that there is no set method to scan the image automatically and remove the offensive content once posted on Facebook. The previous method of reporting abuse still follows, and once a user reports about an abusive post, it will take about 48 hours to eradicate the content from the website. Monika Bickert from Facebook talked about the rules saying:

Sometimes the best way to share information about atrocities in the world is Facebook. We recognize that is a very challenging issue.

Along with updating its rule book, the company also released its ‘transparency report’, which had requests by governments of each country for user data. The overall governmental applications were 34,946 in the first half of 2014 and 35,051 in the second half. The government of India, Turkey and Russia made most of the request, while the western countries including UK and the US, showed a decline in applications.

Overall, the new announcement shows the kind intentions of Facebook. With a medium like Facebook where videos go viral in a matter of minutes, 48 hours is too long skip a prohibited content from eyes of the 1.4 billion users. Facebook wouldn’t be able to stop the content from being posted as its a matter of freedom of speech. Also as it has a massive varied user-base raging from different regions of the world, it would be difficult to have a one size fits all policy. So as of now, the user complaint based feedback model seems like the best way let Facebook know of your discomfort with the content on their website.

  • Yahoo’s New ‘On-demand password’ Service Allows Users to Forget Their Passwords

It has become awful hard to keep a track of our passwords these days. If remembering passwords is not your thing, then Yahoo has a way out for you. The company has introduced a new service called ‘On-demand passwords’ system that sends out a unique password to your handset whenever you want to sign in to your account.

The new approach by the company is much like Google’s two-step verification method, but Yahoo has made it hassle-free by encapsulating it into one easy step. Now, users don’t need to remember the tricky password. Whenever someone wishes to login to the account, he/she need to click the ‘Send me password’ button. The user will receive a code through an app or text message on their phones, which will be the password for your Yahoo account. Yes, exactly like the One-Time Password Service used by banks for online transactions.

The Director of Product Management, Chris Stoner, stated on the official Yahoo Tumbler page –

We’ve all been there…you’re logging into your email and you panic because you’ve forgotten your password. After racking your brain for what feels like hours, it finally comes to you. Phew! You no longer have to memorize a difficult password to sign in to your account.

The feature will not activate automatically, and one has to login to their account using the traditional method. Once you’re logged in, change the settings to enable ‘On-demand password’ service. Go to Settings > Security and turn on ‘On-demand passwords.’ Enter the phone number on which you wish to accept the password from then on. Enter the code you’ll receive on your registered device on your system, and you are done. You will now get a new password on the handset every time you wish to login.

    yahoo

It’s difficult to say how much the new method is reliable because once your registered phone gets lost, you’ll be unable to access your account anymore as there will be no set password. The best part is that Yahoo has not forced the new system on its users, and it’s optional.

Yahoo presented one more technology to secure emails, along with the single-step password system. According to the new feature, the emails will be encrypted, and only the sender and receiver will be able to see the content of the email. Again, the service would not enable automatically, and users can turn on the the security measure for specific emails.

Both the ‘On-demand passwords’ and mail encryption technology will release globally later this year. The former is available for the US users now. To know how the mail encryption service works, check the video below:
