Samsung Teases At Releasing a New Gear S2 Smartwatch at IFA Berlin

As expected, Samsung at the Unpacked 2015 event, revealed a new Gear S2 smart watch. The model seems to have stylised itself, quite  bit with a round face, metal body and new user interface. It likely to run on Samsung’s Tizen OS rather than Android Wear, like the original Gear S.

The new UI design which consists of a circle of apps around the interface cements the fact that it isn’t a part of the Android Wear devices, at all. • Lenovo Asks Motorola To Take Over Its Mobile Division

Lenovo Asks Motorola To Take Over Its Mobile Division

Lenovo has reported a rather gloomy fiscal report this year, regarding its PC and smartphone businesses. With the company struggling to keep up its numbers in the market it has decided to lay off about  10% of the company’s employees from its non-manufacturing sector.

    motorola lenovo

Lenovo’s reported revenue is $10.7 billion, which is still lower than the $11.29 billion forecast. It has also been reported that Lenovo’s net income is 5% lower as compared to last year. This situation has led Lenovo to lay off 3,200 people and a total of 5% of Lenovo’s 60,000 staff.

The justification of this move, is to keep the company afloat and running. However, the interesting bit is, that Lenovo is also planning to use the profits earned to restructure the mobile business. It has plans to rethink its handsets and have only a few signature models.

Hence, Lenovo has asked Motorola to take charge of its mobile division. Reports also suggest that Lenovo’s CEO has written a letter to the employees urging them to better the company’s mobile business group and thinks that, with Motorola in charge of the mobile division and Lenovo in charge of the PC division, both companies should be able to bring Lenovo to the forefront, once again.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is Now Official

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is Now Official

The Snapdragon 820 is said to pull the Snapdragon 810 out of darkness, as the company revealed some legitimate information on its newest upgrade.

First things first – it will use custom 64-bit Kryo cores, bye bye Cortex. But what the company has revealed is mostly about the GPU and ISP. The Snapdragon 820 will use the new generation Adreno 530 GPU, Snapdragon 618 and 620 will use 510. All 5-series Adrenos will support OpenGL 3.1 (with 3.2 coming later) and the new Vulcan API.

With these specifications in mind, Qualcomm is confident that there will be a 40% improvement in performance couple with a 40% cut in power.  The same goes for the Adreno 510 GPU, which should have the same perks over the 405.

The Snapdragon 820 is said to be supported by 14nm or 16nm chips (down from 20nm for the S810) and the power will be further boosted by a standalone power manager for the GPU. However, this hasn’t been made official, yet. The GPUs support HDMI 2.0 and up to 4K @ 60fps output, they’ll even manage 4K output wirelessly (though capped at 30fps).

Along with the above mentioned upgrades, we will also see the ISP being upgraded. The new Spectra Camera Image Signal Processor is said to be smoother at handling small camera pixels, hybrid autofocus (i.e. added phase detection AF), low-light performance and leaning on the GPU for software “optical zoom.”

The new Snapdragon will support dual cameras at the back and unlike its predecessor, the 820 will allow different focal lengths. The ISP and GPU will simulate zoom steps in between both focal lengths to achieve a smooth transition similar to proper optical zoom.

No other information has been yielded, other than the fact that Snapdragon 820 will be available on devices from 2016. Watch this space for more information.

Twitter Officially Got Rid of the 140-Characters Limit From Direct Messages

We had earlier brought you the exciting news that Twitter was going to get rid of the 140 character limit that was put on its Direct Messages. Now it is has been officially followed through.

If you logged in today and checked your Direct Messages you will find that the 140 character limitation is missing and now you can chat away to your hearts content, in a single Direct Message.

While the whole concept of Twitter is supposed to have you sharing your opinions on a public forum, Direct Messages allows you to have personal chats about the memes, news, movements, and events that unfold on Twitter. Therefore, Twitter aimed to work on the Direct Message feature to make it personal, but fun.

As for the public side of it, nothing changes. You will have to say what you need to in 140 characters itself, coupled with memes, videos and emojis, if you wish.

The relieving and drastic change will be executed on Android and iOS apps, as well as twitter.com, TweetDeck and Twitter for Mac. The company says that the rolling out of the change worldwide, will continue in the next couple of weeks.

If you’re dying to try a restriction free Twitter, make sure you have the latest version of the app so that you get the update right away, Sending and receiving Direct Messages via SMS will continue to be limited.

So go ahead, speak your mind.

Deal of the Day: The iPhone Accessory That Helps You fix Storage Issues

iPhone users with 8/16GB smartphones and no expandable storage options know that the available memory vanishes sooner than expected. SanDisk claims to offer an easy solution to this problem. Meet the iXpand Flash Drive; it’s portable and promises to help you easily shift files between devices, subsequently expanding the storage of your iPhone.

The flash drive earlier costed Rs. 4,490 and provided 16GB of extra storage. Currently, thanks to the ongoing Independence day sales, the 16GB drive is available for Rs. 3,499. The reduction in price may be temporary, hence this would be the right time to pick up the handy device.

    iXpand Sandisk 1

According to our review,  the SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive is a convenient device to have around. If you’re looking to free up some space on your iPhone, it might be the simplest solution available. However, instead you could also invest in extra iCloud storage, that way your files remain online, and can be accessed any place and at any time. On the other hand, with the iXpand, you wouldn’t need an internet connection to retrieve your files. We would, without doubt, recommend the device for its ability to play videos/movies on the go. Read the full review of the device here.

  • Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Show Your Boarding Pass at International Airports

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Show Your Boarding Pass at International Airports

Air travellers are refusing to show their boarding passes to the shops in the airport after finding out that the shops were using the information to avoid paying VAT, that too, without giving an added discount to customers. The revolt of sorts, took place on August 8th.

Popular airport stores like WHSmith and Boots are now having to deal with angry customers who are outright refusing to show their boarding passes, just to ‘boost retailers’ profits. It has also been said that readers are now coming out and backing the Independent’s campaign to end the rip off many citizens have been witnessing.

“That’s the last time I show an airport shop my boarding card on principle,” said one tweeter.

The reason that shops don’t want to pay the 20% VAT is because passengers travelling outside the European Union have no purchase tax. Research suggests most of these stores don’t pass the savings on to customers.

A possible solution to this problem is if retailers share the reclaimed VAT with its customers, however the retailers have refused to give in to a dual pricing system, deeming it a ‘practical impossibility.’

While the selling price was Rs. 34,999, Flipkart has anyway dropped the price to Rs.29,999, for you. However, if you exchange your old phone, you can purchase your very own Nexus 6 for Rs. 14,999 only. Seems very reasonable, indeed.

OnePlus One Price to Remain the Same Says Co-Founder Carl Pei

In a recent interview, OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei said that they would not be slashing down prices for the OnePlus One even as sales for OnePlus 2 kickoff.

OnePlus has been a successful startup right from the beginning and with the OnePlus 2 registration reaching nearly 3 million now, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon. Carl Pei also mentioned the fact that they were very humbled at the immensely positive response to the product, especially as huge crowds were seen lining up the day before the launch to buy the product.

“There’s no planned OnePlus One price cut. We see price cuts as slapping our early customers in the face, and will only resort to it when we have no other choice.” – said Carl Pei

OnePlus continues to strive towards its motto of ‘Never Settle’ with the co-founder also quoted as saying, “You don’t kill other flagships by cramming all the specs into a device. That’s a surefire path to mediocrity. Never settle for mediocrity.”

    OnePlus 2 2

With its holistic approach and focus to sell quality devices with high specs at affordable prices, OnePlus seems to be doing more than alright, for now.
