Apple iPhone Launch Event – Where To Watch And What To Expect

The annual iPhone launch event hosted by Apple is set to take place at the Steve Jobs Theatre in San Cupertino, California in less than 3 hours and. The event starts at 10 a.m. PDT/10:30 p.m. IST and will stream live on Apple Inc.’s website. The stream can be watched live here. It is worth noting that the live stream uses Apple’s HLS technology. HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 9.0 or later, a Mac with Safari on macOS v10.11 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Streaming via Apple TV requires an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software 6.2 or later or an Apple TV (4th generation). The American tech giant is expected to unveil a host of products at the event, most notably the iPhone 8.

    iPhone 8

The iPhone or the iPhone X Edition, whatever Apple decides to call it, is one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2017. Apple is expected to shed the bezels from its previous generation iPhones and present smartphone which will have a 6 inch OLED display with minimal bezels around it. The smartphone will run iOS 11 and will be powered by a 3000 mAh battery. Apple will also drop the Rose Gold colour variant and introduce the iPhone 8 in Black, White and Blush Gold colours. The cameras at the back will be vertically placed this time around also shoot 4K videos at 60 FPS. Due to the exclusion of bezels, Apple will reportedly also drop the TouchID home button and replace it with a 3D facial recognition system.

iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus

The two variants will be an upgrade over the last year’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Not a lot has been said about the two ‘S’ models because of all the hype surrounding the iPhone 8. The iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will retain the design language of the previous generation iPhones and have thick bezels around the display. A major upgrade this time around will be the wireless charging capabilities, much like the iPhone 8, meaning the phones will have a glass back instead of metal. The frame around the phone will still be metal to give it a more sturdy look. The iPhone 7S Plus will feature horizontally placed dual-cameras, much like the iPhone 7 Plus. Reports also suggest that Apple will name the two models the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and the flagship iPhone as the iPhone X Edition.

    LTE Enabled Apple Watch

The Apple Watch has dominated the wearable gadgets industry and it looks like Apple is gearing up to launch an LTE enabled Apple Watch which can replace your iPhone for a day if you manage to forget it at home or somewhere else.Intel will be the LTE chip supplier for the new smartwatch. Qualcomm has long been the chip supplier for Apple mobile devices, but since the companies are embroiled in a legal dispute, Apple has chosen Intel for the task at hand. Intel also supplied chips for some of the iPhones last year. Apple is already in talks with network carriers in the US and Europe, such AT&T, T-Mobile etc for the next gen Apple Watch.

  • Apple Discontinues iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle

Apple Discontinues iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle

Earlier today, Apple announced with an official statement, that the company will discontinue the iPod Nano and iPod shuffle. The company spokesperson made the following statement in an e-mail, “Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano.”

The news of Apple pulling the plug on its traditional music players was somewhat expected. It has been three years since Apple discontinued the iPod Classic. Apart from the iPod Classic, iPod Nano and iPod shuffle were the only iPods which didn’t run an iOS. Apple already expected that its iPhone, iPad and iPod touch will take over the traditional music players. As none of them support Apple Music, Apple’s online streaming service for audio and video. It had already been predicted at the time  of the launch of the first iPhone, that the iPhone, which included an “iPod” app for playing music would lead to iPod’s fall.

The last standing iPod, the iPod Touch (which is essentially an iPhone without the cellphone service) has also been “simplified” with two new models, killing the earlier 16GB  and 64GB models. The new iPod touch lineup includes a 32GB variant priced at $199 and a 128GB model priced at $299.

The iPod Nano was last updated in 2012 with bluetooth support for wireless headphones and speakers. Apart from updating the colour options in 2015, no significant update has been available since past 5 years. The iPod Shuffle which was launched in 2005, saw its last upgrade in 2010 along with the updated colour options. The fact that no major upgrades were made available for both the traditional iPods was an indicator enough.

For those who plan on visiting Apple’s Website for hoarding the classics before they disappear, Apple has taken down the pages from the website. Nonetheless, the last of the traditional iPods might still be available online, till the stocks run out.

  • Apple To Unveil 4-inch iPod Touch?

Apple To Unveil 4-inch iPod Touch?

According to the latest rumours, Apple is expected to announce new products in its iPod Touch lineup at a major press event on Wednesday (September 12), including a new model featuring a larger 4-inch display.

The US technology giant is thought highly likely to unveil its new iPhone 5 smartphone at the product launch this week, offering various improvements, including a larger screen, 4G connectivity, NFC etc..

However, the event is also expected to feature new generations of the iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle.

Last week, Rene Ritchie from the iMore website reported that the upcoming iPod Touch will come with the 4-inch, 16:9 display that is rumoured to feature in Apple’s iPhone 5 – an increase on the current 3.5-inch screen in Apple devices.

The Verge speculates that Apple will fit its larger display panel in both the new iPod Touch and iPhone 5, potentially bringing the high-resolution Retina display with IPS – a technology offering improved colour contrast and viewing angles – to the media player.

As well as a larger screen, it is believed the higher priced models could feature a smaller dock connector, more storage and come with Apple’s recently launched iOS 6 pre-installed.

The updated iPod Shuffle will reportedly come in eight different colours, while a larger Nano with Wi-Fi capabilities has also been rumoured.

It forms part of a strategy by Apple to boost sales of its iPod which have dwindled in recent years, due to the overwhelming success of the iPhone and iPad.
