New Google Patent Reveals Self-Adjusting Pixelbook Lid

The Pixelbook was unveiled back in October along with the Pixel 2 smartphones and a few other Google products. It now appears that Google is working on a new Pixelbook which will self-adjust the display angle according to the user’s face and will be activated by a touchpad.

In a new patent, a motorised lid for the Pixelbook was spotted. This lid would ensure that you wouldn’t have to exert as much physical force to use your laptop.

The patent was filed back in Q4 of 2013 but, it was only recently granted to the tech giant. It is worth noting here that one of the people credited for the patent is Ken Loo, who is a Senior Product Design Engineer who worked on the Pixel phone, Pixelbook, and as the lead engineer for Google’s self-driving car’s sensors.

Here’s how this futuristic self-adjusting Pixelbook will work: The user will tap the touchpad with a certain level of pressure or duration of time (which should be customisable), which would make the hinge motor open the lid. The front-facing camera would then track your face and make the hinge’s angle optimal for your the best viewing angle. It won’t be a surprise if face unlock is also incorporated in this laptop since highly accurate cameras or sensors will be used to track the face.

The lid will keep on adjusting itself while you use the laptop. The computer might even use a body part, or an accessory to predict the location of your face and adjust accordingly. However, if the sensors do not detect a face for x number of seconds, it would automatically close and lock itself. You’d also be able to close it via a certain motion on the touchpad.

All of this sounds great in theory but, it will be interesting to see how the implementation will done on this Pixelbook. Google’s hardware team has its plate full if it has to nail this technology and make the Pixelbook a viable option in a market where MacBooks and spec’s out PCs dominate the consumer’s mindset.

Google Launches The Pixelbook For US$999

Google has launched a new iteration of its laptop lineup, the Pixelbook. The Pixelbook has a touch sensitive screen and can be converted into a tablet. Google has introduced a stylus as well called the Pixel Pen. The Pixelbook will also be powered by Google Assistant. Google Play Store will also be compatible with Pixelbook, meaning you can have your favourite Android apps on your laptop. The new Pixelbook starts at a price of US$999 and the Pixel Pen will retail for US$99.

Pixelbook is the thinnest and lightest laptop we’ve ever made.

The Pixelbook has a 12.3 inch 2400 x 1600 (235 ppi) Quad HD LCD display which is touch sensitive and support for the new Pixel Pen. Under the hood, the Pixelbook has the 7th generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM and three storage options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The Pixelbook can be charged using a USB Type C cable and supports fast charging. Powering the device is a 41 Whr battery which gives a usage time of up to 10 hours. It also has a dedicated Google Assistant key to the left of the space bar. The Pixelbook weighs 1.1kg and is available in one colour variant only. The design is inspired by the Pixel phones with a two-tone colour at the back.

The keyboard on the Pixelbook has backlit keys and a travel distance of 0.8mm. A new smart feature introduced by Google is that if the Pixelbook is out of WiFi coverage, it automatically connects to your Pixel phone.

Google Launch Event Is Less Than 10 Hours Away – What To Expect

The 4th October launch event by Google is just a few hours away and the anticipation is increasing with every passing minute. Apart from the new Pixel devices, there are a few other products that might be unveiled by Google today.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

The two new smartphones have been leaked for a while now and a lot of information about the phones is more or less clear. The Pixel 2 is expected to have similar thick bezels as the Pixel from 2016. The Pixel 2 XL will have a more 2017 flagship design with thin bezels and the recent leaks reveal a design very similar to the LG G6, which is possible considering LG is making the Pixel 2 XL for Google this time around. There is also an omission of the 3.5mm headphone jack and addition of front firing stereo speakers.

Google Home Mini

This has been rumoured as well ever since the Amazon Echo Dot released. The smaller sibling of the Google Home will compete with Amazon Echo Dot and will be powered by the Google Assistant. The smart speaker will be available in Chalk, Charcoal, and Coral colours. The Home Mini will be priced at US$49 (Rs 3200 approx.).

New Daydream VR

The Daydream VR headset will be the second iteration of the wearable product by Google. Just like the Pixebook, no specific details have been revealed by the website. The colour variants, however, have been revealed and the Daydream VR will be available in Charcoal, Fog, and Coral colours. Just like the previous generation, a remote controller can be seen alongside the new generation VR headset in leaked images. The new wearable will reportedly cost US$99 (Rs. 6,400 approx.).

The 128GB base variant will be priced at US$1199 (Rs. 77,200 approx.), while the 256GB and 512GB variants are expected to be priced at US$1399 (Rs. 90,000 approx.), and US$1749 (Rs. 1.12 lakhs approx.) respectively.

Google Assistant Might Be Heading To Chromebooks

Google is gearing up to launch a few marquee products at its 4th October launch. Along with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, there are rumours of a new Google Home, and laptops being unveiled at the event. A new leak through a teardown of the Google Home app suggests that Google Assistant might be making its way to the new Chromebooks.

According to a report by 9to5Google, hidden deep in the compatibility section of the app is the mention of Chromebooks:

Listed in the compatibility section of the Chat with your Assistant ‘game’ right alongside phones, Google Home, and Allo is Chromebooks, clear as day. Not only is the text listed out, but a Chromebook icon shows up right along with those for Home and phones, so it seems pretty concrete that this is something Google intended to do, but just slipped out a little early.

It seems like introduction of Google Assistant to Google’s laptop range suggests that the Pixelbook might be launched on October 4th. There are also reports that the new Pixel phones will and Google Assistant will be more integrated than ever and this may be the theme of the October 4th launch. Google Assistant is also getting updates that makes the AI assistant capable of performing more complex tasks and with Google Home Mini also launching, Google might be looking towards making its consumers surrounded by Google Assistant.
