  • India is ready for more Spectrum Scams, as ministry is ready to Aution FM Phase 3 – 839 new FM stations

India is ready for more Spectrum Scams, as ministry is ready to Aution FM Phase 3 – 839 new FM stations

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued its new policy guidelines for FM radio Phase III auctioning to increase overall FM coverage in India. The new phase will enable a total of 839 new FM stations in total India broadcast. While this will open doors to a lot more companies willing to foray into this broadcast stream, what needs to be seen this time around is whether or not the auction can be conducted in a fashion where there is little or no room for errors.

The first round of e-auctioning for the third phase of FM radio expansion (FM-III) is expected to see stiff competition between radio firms as it will cover those towns which are already exposed to private FM radio services and in a change from the past the FM-III policy allows operators to own more than one station in a town. The new policy changes have opened the field for new and old players alike however it will be a big challenge for the new entrants to compete with established players ready with their plans to penetrate in the new markets”

-Sanjay Salil, Managing Director, MediaGuru Consultants Pvt Ltd.

According to new policy guidelines all cities with a population of one lakh plus have been awarded FM station bandwidth, leading to over 800 new stations to be launched in the Phase III. The Reserve Price for new channels in existing FM Phase-II cities shall be the highest bid price received for that city in Phase-II. In cities which are being taken up afresh, the reserve price shall be the Highest Bid price received during FM Phase-II for that category of cities in that region.

  • Edit : Anticipation of the New iPhone 5/ 4s is higher than ever

Edit : Anticipation of the New iPhone 5/ 4s is higher than ever

What is pushing the iPhone to the top of the world?what causes the low supply and large demand? We say its basic rules of economics learnt in High School, to make the demand of a commodity more, the supply needs to be regulated. This time around anticipation of the next Gen. iPhone is higher than ever. With reports of a cheaper variant of the iPhone 4 looming, most users are delaying their cellphone purchases indefinitely.

The iPhone since its launch in 2007 has been the number one smartphone in terms of market share in sales. This has happened not only due to innovations in technology but also because of the fact that Apple is extremely smart when it comes to marketing the device. The first true capacitive touch phone, with the first true capacitive input OS. The first app store that revolutionized apps on a mobile platform. Everything along the smartphone business, Apple has changed the way we use our devices. Today companies like Micromax, Videocon and other budget phone manufacturers are eating off the profits of the Apple name.

Micromax even launched an AD-Campaign for the A70 stating “I can afford this Phone – emphasis on iPhone”. People often take the iPhone as a flagship and compare other devices with that. Sure there are hardcore Android fans and I am one of them, in-fact i love all OS types. For the sake of iGyaan I need to possess flagship devices from all platforms, yet if given the choice i will always choose my iPhone.

Over 90% of the total questions we receive at iGyaan ask us to compare simple Android phones with the fluidity of the iPhone, The answer always has been till now – no other device can match the responsiveness of the iPhone. Yes it crashes, yes you hate it, yes its closed, yes “Bharat is an ex-Apple man”, But it doesn’t change the fact that not only does the iPhone  have the best resolution display till date, unmatched by any manufacturer,it also has the most fluid OS in the world.  This device is meant to be touched and it only relies on that. No matter what hardware you stuff behind the touchscreen of the device, 2x Quad core processors for all we care, untill you iron out the lag between screen swipes, we prefer iPhones.

Apple is also a brand of the youth, it has always been. PCs have been boring for a very long time, since the beginning of computer time. Apple has been always loved by the youth, creative people, writers, artists, web designers, graphic artists and all new forms of young professionals love Apple and the ease of use of the OS and all the softwares around it. All non tech related ads have people using Apple computers in them, this is nothing but passive marketing for Apple and most non technologically sound people love it(that includes more than 90% of the global pop FYI) .

Not to forget the constant mis-marketing by websites like iGyaa ( if only Apple paid us a dollar for every-time we wrote their name on our website) feeds to the brains of technology loving people young and old alike (yes you reading this). People are constantly being hypnotized to believe that the iPhone is mother-ship and every thing else is nothing in-front of it. Althought that is so not the case.

So why is the iPhone now the most sought after phone? Despite its high price and low tech specs, most will still prefer it over their juiced up Android device. If an iPhone 4 was to be available at say 19 Thousand Indian rupees / 350-400 US$, you will see the likes of eBay and craigslist full of second hand Android phones and Blackberries. The new iPhone 5 in recent surveys has been on more than 30% peoples waitlist, that is more than 3 times of the next best OS = Android which stacks in at a mere 9.4% in the list of “My next phone”.

The iPhone 5 is coming and people are waiting for it anxiously, so are we. The device whether a major change or minor, will cause people to queue up and wait outside stores for weeks. It will also cause some people to sell their kidneys and some to be highly disappointed with its not so impressive upgrades. The only question that now remains is

HAVE YOU DELAYED YOU NEXT SMARTPHONE PURCHASE IN ANTICIPATION OF THE NEXT IPHONE?

  • Micromax Andro A70 Review

    Micromax Andro A70 Review

The Micromax Andro A70 was one of the most anticipated phones of this quarter, especially in the sub Rs. 8000 bracket. To be honest, at first we thought of it as just a minor upgrade to the existing Andro A60. But as we reviewed this little marvel we began so see a major change in its operation. Lets see why the Andro A70 is our pick for the price range.

    Build Quality and Design

Reminiscent of the Nexus One’s design, the Micromax Andro A70 is built with sturdy plastics. Nice curvaceous ends make it an extremely attractive design, and very comfortable to hold in the hand. The screen on the front is tough and provides the extra protection required for a touch phone of this nature. The buttons are tactile and easy to use, the overall standard of construction is quite impressive.

The front of the display is also glass and not plastic unlike its predecessor, Which makes the overall build of the device impressive. The phone is sturdy and does not make rattling noises even when tossed around.

    Hardware

    •   Android 2.2 (Froyo)
    •   Camera Primary 5.0 MP Secondary – VGA
    •   600MHz Processor
    •   3.2 inch Multi Touch Capacitive Screen
    •   Mi – apps –  application store by Micromax
    •  Full Android Market
    •   WCDMA 2100 MHz
    •   HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
    •   Mi-Fi Pocket Wireless Internet
    •   GPS
    •   Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
    •   Battery 1450mAh
    •   Proximity Sensor
    •   Gravity Sensor

    Camera and Multimedia

A surprisingly interesting 5 MP camera with autofocus that delivers exceptionally good pictures. The camera displays great skill when it comes to auto-focus and cannot be tackled down by any other device in this price range. Although colors appear washed out at first but a little playing around with the settings gives a good picture.

Video on the other hand is simply OK, you cannot expect much from the VGA video capability. A simple tweak, by changing the video quality settings to custom in the camera we were able to get VGA video. If you leave the video quality to high, it captures a much lower resolution video. A sample of the video can be seen in the videos below.

The Front facing camera, is a simple VGA camera and can be used for nothing but clicking self portraits and video. We tried several times to initiate a camera response from Skype /fring etc, but failed to do so.

The screen of the Andro A70 is great for watching videos and browsing the internet. It is also a capacitive 2 point multitouch screen, so pinch to zoom works great and with the 3.2 inch 320x480px screen text is crisp and easily read.

Speakers are loud and clear when it comes to watching videos or simply listening to music. Overall multimedia experience was satisfactory and a lot more than you can expect from a device which costs only 7500 Rs.

    Phone and Messaging

No complaints here, the phone call capability was excellent , little or no dropped calls, clear speaker and earpiece. the microphone also pics up sound aptly and delivers to the other side. One thing with mentioning is the number of connection errors faced in process of dialing a number were far more than any other device tested.

Messaging and emailing has also improved vastly over the previous A60 thanks to the inclusion of the capacitive screen. This makes the device almost brilliant, keyboard is nice and spread out and easy to type on even with relatively large fingers. The keyboard can also be easily replaced with customizable keyboards from the Marketplace, including Better Keyboard. Swype however does not work with the Andro A70.

    Internet and Portable Hotspot

This section is dedicated to connectivity and utilization of the Internet, Data and WiFi.
The A70 has a very weak WiFi antenna, and mostly requires you to be relatively close to the router to get a decent signal. This was kind of a let down especially after the excellent WiFi antenna on the Andro A60.

The Portable Hotspot also fails throughout the board, dropping WiFi and asking for reactivations several times.

Apart from the above, browsing works great on the A70 especially 3G networks perform as good as high end phones.

    Battery Life

We were quite impressed with the battery life on the A70, with over 5 hours of talk time, and a good 7-8 of internet usage, upto 3 days of standby, make it an excellent device in terms of battery life. But with Android as an OS, you never know what app you install, suddenly battery life is critically lower than before. Overall great battery , be sure to inspect your apps if you face battery issues.

    Conclusion

While its an extremely awesome device for its price, it definitely has its ups and its down . With limited WiFi range and useless front camera this device lacks little and gives more. Good things include impressive build quality, a great photo camera, Android 2.2, wifi hotspot, easily root-able ( with possibility of custom rome). This device is a little understated by the company. The UI is much improved and a launcher from the market like ADW launcher can make this device a gem with pinch home screens, and smooth scrolling.

The Micromax Andro A70 is a good package for someone who wants to enter the Android ecosystem, or even a good upgrade for an A60 user. This device is also an excellent secondary device for a expensive smartphone.

    We say go for it!

    Multimedia & Camera

The display on the device is simply stunning, a 3.8 inch screen with a good 480x800px display makes it a very vibrant and eye catching device. Videos play beautifully on the device and almost all types of formats are supported by the device. Audio is loud and clear from the earpiece and speaker phone with deep bass and subtle highs. The phone  covers all grounds when it comes to multimedia.

The Camera on the device is a beautiful 5mp camera which does HD video at 720p. The video fared great in comparison with other devices. The pictures from the device are crisp and clear, the camera focuses quick and get get good exposure shots , when ample lighting is available. You simply cannot ask for a better functioning camera from the device. However, we did notice that 3rd party apps improved camera output.

    Root and Custom Rom

The easiest device to root, the Ideos X5 was easily rooted and upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread using Cyanogen Mod 7. The device becomes snappier and much more appealing to the user. Heck you can even get the old CRT TV turn off animation when you lock the device. The benchmark scores improve by about 300 points and the overall stability of the device increases.

    Phone, Messaging and Battery

The device features a brilliant antenna, we got good network strength even in places where there is usually low network, we faced no dropped calls and overall performance of the device is great. The screen is also great for messaging and features SWYPE keyboard as a standard, therefore making it an excellent keyboard.

The battery life of the device was also more than expected. The device gave us 5-6 hours of talk time on 2g and about 48 hours of standby. 3-4 hours of talk time on 3G networks.

    Conclusion

There are not many devices that require such short reviews to become recommended devices, Ideos X5 is one of them. We highly recommend this device, sheer good quality materials and excellent specs, brilliant screen, the ability of root, and Cyanogen mod 7, what else could one want?. This device is sheer brilliance , but it just comes down to the poor service and support for Huawei in India. Making this device a highly questionable one for those looking for long term investments.

Bharat Electronics Ltd’s Solar Slate promises Froyo for 3000 Rupees.

Since the order coming in early July, BEL has supplied an initial 2,000 tablets to the North-East. They were made at a small plant that was added to BEL’s Mass Manufacturing Facility in Bangalore at a cost of Rs 7 crore. Depending on further demand, it may put up an additional line for Rs 20 crore, apart from tapping capacities at Ghaziabad and Panchkula.

We are already poking around to get some action with the device.

Blackberry Bold Touch 9900 Launch dates Confirmed for India

We reported earlier that the Bold 9900 is coming in the second week of August. After a long discussing with Vodafone CMO Kumar Ramanathan, we were able to collect that the device is infact coming in August, but the launch dates have been shifted to either 20th or 25th of August.

All the stock for the Blackberry Devices is already in India and has cleared customs, warehouses are stocking the devices and sale of the device will begin almost immediately after the launch event.

We are really looking forward to the launch of this device, we truly support the fact that it will do magic for our Blackberry Division

He also said that the call centers were gathering record enquiries for the device, some stating the source as our website.

The Bold Touch 9900 will be RIM’s first device to have a qwerty – touchscreen combo in a candybar design, it also has the first 1.2 ghz processor to have ever appeared in a Blackberry device. A 287dpi pixel density means this device is going to be easy on the eyes. At just 10.5mm thick, this device will be the thinnest ever from RIM/blackberry.

The outside shell of the device is made out of machined steel, along with carbon fibre composite for the back panel. The liquid graphics based LCD display has a toughened glass exterior.

Pricing speculation still remains in the Rs 32000 mark, although a couple of iGyaan sources at Blackberry were able to tell us that the company is hard at work trying to get the price around Rs 28,000  during the launch or within a week-ten days from launch time. As always expect full coverage of the device post launch.

  • Audi all Set to Launch the A6 Lightweight in India

Audi all Set to Launch the A6 Lightweight in India

We just got information from Audi that they are all set to launch the new A6 Lightweight in India. Looks like Audi is all set on doing research for the new car and are tapping the customer base.

As in motorsports, Audi says that its new A6 executive sedan also represents this commitment towards lightweight construction.

Drawing on the carmaker’s experience in lightweight materials with cars such as the all-aluminium A8 full-sized limousine and the steel-aluminium TT sports coupé, the latest-generation A6 also combines steel and aluminium for improved efficiency and lower emissions. The A6’s extensive aluminium construction (over 20 per cent) and high-tech steels have reduced body weight by 30kg over its predecessor.Against an equivalent all-steel body, the A6 is approximately 15 per cent lighter.

In fact, some versions are up to 80 kg lighter than its predecessor. For example, the 2.0 TDI model has a kerb weight of only 1,575 kg.
